Only works in the US. Many XDA folk live elsewhere, or would like to use GPS nav elsewhere.

Try this one:
http://omm.mine.nu/
Tested it for 3 weeks now, works without flaw (excapt You have to cahnge the xml-file where to download the maps). Maps can be downloaded in bulk worldwide. Got maps before leaving my Cell-area from Egypt, Lebanon and so on.............
To fill Your SD Card with maps worldwide just edit the maps.xml-file with an xml-editor (xml notepad 2007 free from MS) to get maps-cache to SD (original file sends them to RAM and programs own edit function gives an error).

1. ssh client -- Pocket Putty
2. app to transfer dvd to HD2 -- SPB Mobile DVD
4. syncML syncing of contacts and calendar -- Google Sync for mobile

Garmin XT
I can confirm that Garmin XT works great on the Leo. I've been using it since day one I've had the phone (3 months), whitout any problems at all. As a matter of fact, it is now a pleasure to use. On the Tytn II it took ages to start up, On the Leo it's a snap and ver responsive.
Never had it crash my phone (I'm running the standard ROM it came with).

I tried Magneto on my Himalaya, but I had lot of problems(see 'Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking'). Is it there same problems also for Typhoon? Meaned the biggest problems such as unability to connect via ActiveSync, unability to accept many applications from 2003SE,etc. Someony who has it already tried, please write here your opinions and experiences. Thanx.
On Typhoon, Activesync works perfectly, you can't unlock it, neither for applications, nor to use another sim card, you can't use USSD... Don't load it for the now and wait for the final version.

+1 you are right.. it is so early for WM2005. if you load microsoft can test WM 2005 on your phone and you will be cavy...
Will there ever be a stable WM5 for the typhoon?

It can be application unlocked very easily with a simple registry change.
I dont see the problems eveyone is having with the typhoon with wm 5, its very stable I dont get any crashes or lockups any more. Tom tom 5 even works relaibly. The only downfall is the camera, which im sure there will be a fix.
?
I am still interesting about the applications. WM5 needs applications designed especially for this OS or accepts also the apps, which are running also on WM2003(se)? My Himalaya, while running on Magneto, wants not accept lot of the software that I am using with WM2003se normally...
I've been running WM5 on Typhoon for 1 week.
It's awesome. (totally happy, no issues with anything)
The WM5 GUI look & feel is much better for everythying
It seems faster
I really enjoy having photo/ring-tone based contacts built in.
radio seems to aquire quicker
Active Sync over GPRS and IMAP mail is MUCH faster!
I also recommend Pocket Controller Professional. You can control any pocket pc or smartphone from your computer! (and sync files, etc etc) It comes with “skins” so it looks like your whole phone is up on the screen. (very nice to "type" in stuff now and then too) Works great on the Typhoon with WM5 so far.
The Tornado should be interesting in Oct. (similar size + WiFi + EDGE)
s4czech or anyone else, could you please indicate me a link where to find a complete explanation on how to upgrade to WM5?
I already downloaded the upgrade, but as I donno the procedure all I get is error' messages that this or that is missing... Thanks!

I am using WM 5 on my C500 (Typhoon). It runs very well, stable and fast. I have installed the following Software (tested and running). Except Power Task, they are all WM2K3 Apps
- CityTime Alarms
- Developerone Power Tasks (WM5 Version)
- Fizz Traveller 2
- Fizz Monitor
- TCPMP
- WordPad
- Blackjack
- Facade from SBSH (new)
- Opera for Mobile (new)
- Papyrus from SBSH (new)
- GPRS Traffic Counter (new)
And that's basically all I need

GPS for idiots - what app works "out of the box" ?

Hi
Having tried TomTom 7, Copilot and the "try before buy" Navigon; I found all to be wanting in some way. I have not tried: Garmin XT is fixed to a SD card - I don't want to swop cards; IGO 8 looks good but seems to require lots of fixes.
Is there a GPS application (not google or similar online app) that just works from the box or cab ?
I like the google app but I don't like the high data rates which could get expensive when I'm roaming.
I just want a GPS app that has its own maps on my SD card (16 gbyte card so loads of space available). Does this really exist ?
When I check the official GPS provider sites (e.g., TomTom and Copilot) then they say their product is not compatible with the HTC HD - I guess that explains all the various hoops people have to jump through to get an app working.
I suspect I have to wait until spring next year for the app companies to provide a working HD compatible version ? Or, does anyone know better ??
Thanks & holiday greetings to all, Dave.
You can't compare Google Maps with a navigation solution like TomTom, IGo or Navigon. Google Maps is just showing the area around your current position, whereas the other programs can navigate you through the country.
As far as I know TomTom works just without any work, all others need to be configurated. How to do that is mentioned in the various threads here, so it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Come again? I've been using Google Maps for over a year to navigate me around Brisbane. (No that's not the country but I'm sure it's capable of that.)
Well I can use google to navigate as it has a "show directions" option. I know it is not as sophisticated as the other GPS apps.
My problem with google is it needs a data link which gets expensive when I'm out of my home country (hence need often a GPS) because I have to make a gprs link to have google working.
TomTom does not work on the HD - Version 6 fails to work. Version 7 works fine but there seems to be no way to legally load maps except the single trial map of one city.
Thanks anyway for answering.

Does CoPilot work on the HD?
I've got Version 6 currently on my XDA Orbit & was thinking of upgrading
Garmin Mobile XT works great on my HD
Cheesy Dave / Gulioth - I have used CoPliot v7 from day 1 on my Touch HD without any problems. Transferring it from my Touch Cruise took 5 minutes over the air, deactivating and reactivating (something you cannot do with TTN6).
It looks really good on the HD screen and is very easy to navigate through the menus (no pun intended). I am currently using v7.7.0.134 and ALK are bringing an even friendlier version out for the Touch HD shortly. I have used this, TTN6, TTN7 and Telmap Navigator in the recent past and various others going back to routeplanner on a Psion series 5.
Whichever gps software you use, it will always be "short" in some way or other. As far as the HTC Touch is concerned, CoPliot is by far the easeist overall to install, register and use with a touch screen & the maps are fairly up to date. I can also import my own POIs and safety cameras from TTN.
I also gave Garmin XT a try.
One problem though, up until now, i am feeling that there is Lag or the cpu is not following up too fast to show changes, so if i am making a turn in a roundabout, you can see a strange thing happen on the screen.

Thanks davast. I actually got a copy of CoPilot which was sold to me as CoPilot7 for windows mobile. It turned out to be the specific version for the HTC Diamond.
I think I will wait for the new version and double check this time that the supplier knows what they are doing.
Regards, D.
What's latest CoPilot version? Is it v7? Does anyone know if the next one is imminent?
I own v6 for my XDA Orbit 1 and will probably upgrade rather than purchase new version as think it works out cheaper.
Upgrade = £48.93
Dealer = £59.95
I'm going to try a new one when I get a minute, beta atm but works on my hacked Hermes to wm6.1 and is nice

Hi Gulioth, I received version 7 "for the HTC Diamond" which will only load to the internal storage of the Diamond - hence, I returned it as this would not work on the HD.
I don't know the specific current version other than "7". If you have CoPilot Central then you should be able to find it. Unfortunately with the Diamond version there also is no copy of the CoPilot Central.
I have returned the Diamond version and I'm sitting waiting for someone (PLEASE !!) to make a legally correct version work.
If you check here: http://www.alk.eu.com/copilot/compatibility.asp you can see that ALK says the HD is not yet compatible.
I've been using OCN8 (on course navigation) on my HD for a month. It's beautiful and has TTS for enhanced street naming in turn-by-turn directilns. The only problem, out of the box, is it only runs in portrait mode, but it does it beautifully in all the HD high res glory.
There's a thread in the Blackstone section with workarounds for running landscape.
Thanks - that's a new one to me - I will investigate "on course navigation"
Ciao, Dave
Route 66 Version 7 works sweeet for me

Hmmm - this seems to be only USA & Canada according to their site:
Map Coverage USA and Canada.
The latest maps and up-to-date points of interest for United States. Full road coverage with over 10 443 000 kilometers of updated roads, and over 12.3 millions points of interest. Includes maps of Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico.
http://www.oncoursenavigator.com/ocn8_intro.aspx
I did not specify in my original question that I'm based in Europe.
I'm looking for a legally correct GPS application that works "out-of-the box" or direct from the cab without having to tweak xml files or anything else and which is recognised by the software provider as compatible and acceptable. TomTom and CoPilot do not yet list the HD as a compatible device. I also don't want a software that is linked to one micro SD card (like Garmin XT).
I believe that CoPilot will be the right choice when it is HD compatible. I like also TomTom but it seems so difficult to make it work - there are many threads here about the tricks needed to make maps work. I do have TomTom running but only with the sample map. Trying to get TomTom home to accept the HD and legally download new Maps does not seem legally correct now - maybe next year ...

Hey mate, my advice would be to read up on the dummies guide to flashing roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505377, and start FLASHING, it can take a bit of getting used to at first but definately worth persevering with.
I use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524032, you can see screenshots of the rom itself in post #2
Have a good read through the threads first but there are always plenty of members who are willing to help.
Good luck!
Thanks, I'll give these a go, hopefully I'm successful!!

Well, I guess it depends on what you like to do with it.
Here's a list of the things I use on mine.
CoPilot 8 for SatNav (not free)
Coreplayer (not free) for play back of movies and tv
CleanRAM - frees up memory that apps have left unavailable for Windows, saves rebooting.
myPlayer - for streaming TV, but more importantly for me, I can download programs from BBC iPlayer direct to the phone.
Internet Explorer - this is installed by default, but I tweaked the settings to make it pretend to be a Nokia phone, this is so I can watch Sky Sports using the Vodafone service. On a HSDPA connection, it is not bad at all for £5 per month
Nimbuzz - instant messenger, I have used this and Fring, which allow you to be connected to Skype, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, GoogleTalk (and theoretically Facebook and Twitter)
Midomi - Music Id to "name that tune" - not used very often, but pretty cool
when I do
Google Maps - when you need satellite or street view.
G-Watch - nice stopwatch and countdown timer
HD Soft Reset - allows you to reboot easily
HD Tweak - let's you tweak various settings
Run GPS - Go for a run or on your bike, it will track your journey and create file you can then upload to various services which will map your journey.
If you get a heart rate monitor it can monitor and chart that.
Whilst you are running it can announce your progress via the headphones, telling you various information including how fast you are , whether you have deviated from your journey, or even if you are running slower/faster than a previous journey.
Remotely accessing a PC:
VNC
LogMeIn
RemoteDesktop
These all work and may suit your needs
MyMobiler, allows you to use your windows keyboard and mouse to control the phone. So for IM, it is much quicker to type on a full size keyboard.
It is a little laggy sometimes, and I believe there is a HTC equivalent, but I haven't tried it.
I did try S2U2 - Slide to Unlock, but for me it seemed to kill the machine and everything ran very slowly.
I have tried some of the other browsers, like
Skyfire and Fennec but Opera still wins for me.
Outlook push email with Google Mail works well for me, not sure it is quite as instant always as Google would have me believe, but fast enough for my needs, and having it automatically deliver my mail to my phone means I can review them on the tube.
I also use the FM Radio quite a bit too.
Hope this helps.

The missing Apps

hi
I just got my desire (upgrade from Blackstone) and it is amazing.. I am so happy but now down to business.
My Blackstone was tuned to perfection for my app needs (shame about the UI, constant crashing AND slowness despite NRG best efforts with excellent ROMs.)
I have covered lots of my needs and more with great Android Apps (see appbrain thread) but I cannot currently achieve the following.
1. active synch my local outlook email on my laptop.
2. Sling Player (Though I see its coming)
3. Ebook reader for Mobi pocket reader files..... -- I guess I need to move to PDF only and find a decent PDF viewer of which there appears much choice.
4. Some kind of SKYPE/MSN for outside '3' (I have the 3 versions) and checking out Fring.
5. A navigator like Tom Tom for Europe.
cheers
New to android myself .
But just wanted to say that co-pilot for europe is great and support most languages.
Using Aldiko Book Reader for my e-books atm and i like it so far.
Congrats on the Desire btw

Check out Sygic (www.sygic.com) or Navigon (www.navigon.com), both are cool programs. Navigon has a 30 day trial @ Android Market.
1. active synch my local outlook email on my laptop.
Use gmail, or set up exchange syn.
2. Sling Player (Though I see its coming)
Never used it.
3. Ebook reader for Mobi pocket reader files..... -- I guess I need to move to PDF only and find a decent PDF viewer of which there appears much choice.
The pdf viewer is fine. But i dont read books on the phone anyway.
4. Some kind of SKYPE/MSN for outside '3' (I have the 3 versions) and checking out Fring.
Yeah - where the f**k is skype ? Its mental they dont have an android version.
5. A navigator like Tom Tom for Europe.
I missed totom too, but copilot ROCKS !

thanks for the options guys.. looks like most solved then except 1)

Where to get apps besides Marketplace?

Hey everybody, I've had this Snap from US Cellular for a few months now. Searched and searched. Marketplace doesn't have much of a selection. Is this phone just not compatible with many apps? or am I just missing something? It has WM 6.1, Tech said that it USC will be adding updates to WM 6.5 on their website, but so far no luck with that. Does anyone know of a custom ROM I could use on my phone?
Where??
Of course here at XDA!!!
Well i've looked everywhere and no one will help me find one that will work on my phone. thanks for the help
apps for windows standard
I've got the Ozone, so we are in the same boat app wise. You are right re: apps...Most everything out there (even on XDA as far as I can see) is touchscreen, so you have to dig to get standard apps.
Some that I like:
- Agenda One (do not get SBSH calendar...there is a bug in it which keeps it from working on standard 6.5)...Great calendar and PIM
- the AP Mobile app
- Evernote
- Facebook
- Google Maps
- Netflix (you can get this on the Win App website)
- Opera Mobile or the Opera Mini beta for WinMobile (browsers)
- Skyfire (browser)
- Pocket Bible
- Pocket Quicken
- Tipster (a tip calculator)
- Wunderradio (great program that lets you stream terrestrial radio stations that have an online presence over your snap...LOVE IT)
- WMWifirouter - combined with the Internet Connection Sharing program you can find here on XDA turns your phone into a walking hotspot. Pretty cool.
- Office Mobile 2010 is downloadable now from the Win App website
You may want to have a look at this French website :
