hi
I just got my desire (upgrade from Blackstone) and it is amazing.. I am so happy but now down to business.
My Blackstone was tuned to perfection for my app needs (shame about the UI, constant crashing AND slowness despite NRG best efforts with excellent ROMs.)
I have covered lots of my needs and more with great Android Apps (see appbrain thread) but I cannot currently achieve the following.
1. active synch my local outlook email on my laptop.
2. Sling Player (Though I see its coming)
3. Ebook reader for Mobi pocket reader files..... -- I guess I need to move to PDF only and find a decent PDF viewer of which there appears much choice.
4. Some kind of SKYPE/MSN for outside '3' (I have the 3 versions) and checking out Fring.
5. A navigator like Tom Tom for Europe.
cheers
New to android myself .
But just wanted to say that co-pilot for europe is great and support most languages.
Using Aldiko Book Reader for my e-books atm and i like it so far.
Congrats on the Desire btw

Check out Sygic (www.sygic.com) or Navigon (www.navigon.com), both are cool programs. Navigon has a 30 day trial @ Android Market.
1. active synch my local outlook email on my laptop.
Use gmail, or set up exchange syn.
2. Sling Player (Though I see its coming)
Never used it.
3. Ebook reader for Mobi pocket reader files..... -- I guess I need to move to PDF only and find a decent PDF viewer of which there appears much choice.
The pdf viewer is fine. But i dont read books on the phone anyway.
4. Some kind of SKYPE/MSN for outside '3' (I have the 3 versions) and checking out Fring.
Yeah - where the f**k is skype ? Its mental they dont have an android version.
5. A navigator like Tom Tom for Europe.
I missed totom too, but copilot ROCKS !

thanks for the options guys.. looks like most solved then except 1)
HTC synch does NOT synch emails and I really do not want to move to a exchange solutions.. i want active synch for android... I store my urgent inbox from multiple email accounts including work on outlook and I need this synced on my phone
I'm trying this currently "mylink"

ok i tried the demo and it works well. Only issue is the reviews are not good saying demo is hiding the bugs.. Looks like I will take a 10 quid gamble..

hi guys!
what's the best feeds reader?
I prefer browser-based Google Reader. Otherwise I would recommend Spb Insight (it downloads whole articles instead of just a perex).
If you need something that can work offline, I recommend pRssReader, its development ceased but it has caching, google reader sync and everything. But I use iphone web version of google reader from opera.
best rss reader
Having worked with several rss readers such as p rss reader , google reader , newsgate , yomumedia , prpnews , sbp insight ....... and others...... , I can say with confident that the original pre installed rss reader on htc touch hd (rss hub) is the best. It has the most strongest search function among all others and infact very far ahead of them.
-google reader is a very good in mobile format ,but it doesn't update automaticly ! and this is a great shame for any rss reader .also there is no search function.
-others also havnot any viable search ,so you have to be content with some limited news channels.
-p rss reader recently is blocked by some sort of google code bars ,so it's almost out of use !
-smart rss reader is a java-jar application and very slow .
-Ova rss reader is a java app. too ,with limited channels and tiny font (a universal problem with java on mobiles ! ).
So .....Thanks htc folks for their great job .s
Have a good time !
I like Egress
pRSS reader blew up on me and wouldn't update. I tried reinstalling, etc. I couldn't identify the problem, nor did I feel enclined to take the time to figure it out. So I started trying some others. Egress was the least expensive but still provided professional results and low mem usage. It's readable offline and allows external card storage.
With stuff like this, though, a lot of your choice depends on preference. The most popular ones seem to be Pocket Insight (pricey as compared to Egress), and Google Reader (online/no auto-update).
For me personally, I use and love NewsBreak. It is a pay program but it is worth it.

You dont get that freezing bug on newbreak/rss hub - its been there for years. illum says its just a windows mobile 6 issue - its annoying as hell.
I don't even know of this bug you speak of, honestly. I use it everyday and I have yet to run into any real issues.

what? that is one of the stupidest thing I've heard from a dev company. it is one thing and one thing only, they are lazy lazy lazy.....when was the last time they actually updated the program? if its a windows mobile 6 issue, why doesn't all the rest freeze in the same way?
I use RSS Hub. I was searching for a beter rss reader the other day, well it doesn't have to be better, just more visually apealing but I didn't find any so sticked with RSS hub.
re-iterating aidinali's point, that search function is nice

Hey mate, my advice would be to read up on the dummies guide to flashing roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505377, and start FLASHING, it can take a bit of getting used to at first but definately worth persevering with.
I use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524032, you can see screenshots of the rom itself in post #2
Have a good read through the threads first but there are always plenty of members who are willing to help.
Good luck!
Thanks, I'll give these a go, hopefully I'm successful!!

SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Well, I guess it depends on what you like to do with it.
Here's a list of the things I use on mine.
CoPilot 8 for SatNav (not free)
Coreplayer (not free) for play back of movies and tv
CleanRAM - frees up memory that apps have left unavailable for Windows, saves rebooting.
myPlayer - for streaming TV, but more importantly for me, I can download programs from BBC iPlayer direct to the phone.
Internet Explorer - this is installed by default, but I tweaked the settings to make it pretend to be a Nokia phone, this is so I can watch Sky Sports using the Vodafone service. On a HSDPA connection, it is not bad at all for £5 per month
Nimbuzz - instant messenger, I have used this and Fring, which allow you to be connected to Skype, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, GoogleTalk (and theoretically Facebook and Twitter)
Midomi - Music Id to "name that tune" - not used very often, but pretty cool
when I do
Google Maps - when you need satellite or street view.
G-Watch - nice stopwatch and countdown timer
HD Soft Reset - allows you to reboot easily
HD Tweak - let's you tweak various settings
Run GPS - Go for a run or on your bike, it will track your journey and create file you can then upload to various services which will map your journey.
If you get a heart rate monitor it can monitor and chart that.
Whilst you are running it can announce your progress via the headphones, telling you various information including how fast you are , whether you have deviated from your journey, or even if you are running slower/faster than a previous journey.
Remotely accessing a PC:
VNC
LogMeIn
RemoteDesktop
These all work and may suit your needs
MyMobiler, allows you to use your windows keyboard and mouse to control the phone. So for IM, it is much quicker to type on a full size keyboard.
It is a little laggy sometimes, and I believe there is a HTC equivalent, but I haven't tried it.
I did try S2U2 - Slide to Unlock, but for me it seemed to kill the machine and everything ran very slowly.
I have tried some of the other browsers, like
Skyfire and Fennec but Opera still wins for me.
Outlook push email with Google Mail works well for me, not sure it is quite as instant always as Google would have me believe, but fast enough for my needs, and having it automatically deliver my mail to my phone means I can review them on the tube.
I also use the FM Radio quite a bit too.
Hope this helps.
Hey everybody, I've had this Snap from US Cellular for a few months now. Searched and searched. Marketplace doesn't have much of a selection. Is this phone just not compatible with many apps? or am I just missing something? It has WM 6.1, Tech said that it USC will be adding updates to WM 6.5 on their website, but so far no luck with that. Does anyone know of a custom ROM I could use on my phone?
Where??
Of course here at XDA!!!
Well i've looked everywhere and no one will help me find one that will work on my phone. thanks for the help
apps for windows standard
I've got the Ozone, so we are in the same boat app wise. You are right re: apps...Most everything out there (even on XDA as far as I can see) is touchscreen, so you have to dig to get standard apps.
Some that I like:
- Agenda One (do not get SBSH calendar...there is a bug in it which keeps it from working on standard 6.5)...Great calendar and PIM
- the AP Mobile app
- Evernote
- Facebook
- Google Maps
- Netflix (you can get this on the Win App website)
- Opera Mobile or the Opera Mini beta for WinMobile (browsers)
- Skyfire (browser)
- Pocket Bible
- Pocket Quicken
- Tipster (a tip calculator)
- Wunderradio (great program that lets you stream terrestrial radio stations that have an online presence over your snap...LOVE IT)
- WMWifirouter - combined with the Internet Connection Sharing program you can find here on XDA turns your phone into a walking hotspot. Pretty cool.
- Office Mobile 2010 is downloadable now from the Win App website
You may want to have a look at this French website :

Only works in the US. Many XDA folk live elsewhere, or would like to use GPS nav elsewhere.
Try this one:
http://omm.mine.nu/
Tested it for 3 weeks now, works without flaw (excapt You have to cahnge the xml-file where to download the maps). Maps can be downloaded in bulk worldwide. Got maps before leaving my Cell-area from Egypt, Lebanon and so on.............
To fill Your SD Card with maps worldwide just edit the maps.xml-file with an xml-editor (xml notepad 2007 free from MS) to get maps-cache to SD (original file sends them to RAM and programs own edit function gives an error).
1. ssh client -- Pocket Putty
2. app to transfer dvd to HD2 -- SPB Mobile DVD
4. syncML syncing of contacts and calendar -- Google Sync for mobile
Garmin XT
I can confirm that Garmin XT works great on the Leo. I've been using it since day one I've had the phone (3 months), whitout any problems at all. As a matter of fact, it is now a pleasure to use. On the Tytn II it took ages to start up, On the Leo it's a snap and ver responsive.
Never had it crash my phone (I'm running the standard ROM it came with).

Hello, ALL
My T-Mobile (USA) HD2 plans to move to Android. Currently using stock (3.14) ROM and happy with it. I'm VERY experienced WM user, but tried couple Android ROMS and now I want to move.
It took me quite some time to get the BEST (imho and for my needs) apps for WM and I'm looking for alternatives with Android. It does not matter if they are free or paid. They have to be BEST of the BEST.
E.g CorePlayer is the king of WM video players. I'm looking for the king on Android. Not just "some" player, but the best player. Got the idea ?
There are so many apps for Android and I would appreciate your help in finding best alternatives for my favorite WM apps.
Here is the list of apps on WM and I'm looking for alternative in Android. And YES I did read other 2 threads about same "migration"
1. Resco Explorer
2. iGo Primo 1.1
3. Magicall - this program intercepts calls/messages and change them.
E.g. when I call international phone#, Magicall automatically (!)
determines it is international - then calls my calling card access#,
enters PIN and then original phone#
4. RSS Hub - RSS aggregator
5. ABBYY Lingvo - dictionary. NOT online, does not require internet connection.
Can speak words
6. SPB Radio - online radio with nice touch interface and ability to add own URLs
7. Nitrogen - music player
8. AlReader2 - ebook reader
9. Panoramic Calc Pro - great calculator with a lot of things and with
self-updating currency rates
10. Resco Photo Manager
11. PPC Pim Backup - for contacts/email/appointments backup/restore
12. SPB Backup - full system backup/restore
13. Panoramic moTweets - twitter client
14. LMT - allows me to close/open apps by sliding fingers in different directions
15. Pigeon - ICQ client
13. PortGo - similar to fring, but finger friendly interface for SIP calls
16. FPSE - Sony PS emulator
17. Slacker Radio - similar to Pandora, but I find it better
18. GrooveMobile - client for GrooveShark service, where you can search and
listen to music
19. ArkSwitch - program task manager, shows me what is running,
close apps/close all, finger friendly
20. MobileTag - barcode reader with price check on internet.
Very handy in determining "deal or no deal"
21, Official Livejournal app for mobile
22. MS Facebook app
23. SPB Wireless monitor. Calculates you data usage. Can produce charts per app/day/month/date range/etc
I know this list is big. But its been so many years on WM
And BTW, if you know absolute KILLER app on Android which is not in WM but everybody knows it on Android (like Angry Birds ) - let me know too !
You can get Slacker on Android. As for playing MP3s, I use MixZing on a daily basis and love it...but it really all comes down to personal preference.
Edit: Oh, and one of those killer apps you mentioned, IMO, is LauncherPro. It's a replacement launcher that adds a lot of functionality. There are both free and paid versions of the app.

Here is the list of apps on WM and I'm looking for alternative in Android. And YES I did read other 2 threads about same "migration"
1. Resco Explorer ------------ Astro, Root Explorer, etc
2. iGo Primo 1.1 ------------- CoPilot ($5) works like a charm!
3. Magicall - this program intercepts calls/messages and change them.
E.g. when I call international phone#, Magicall automatically (!)
determines it is international - then calls my calling card access#,
enters PIN and then original phone# --------- not sure if there is anything similar to this app - I never got into SIP calling on Android.
4. RSS Hub - RSS aggregator ---------- you have many RSS feed readers - for news I recommend PULSE app (non-RSS but really cool)
5. ABBYY Lingvo - dictionary. NOT online, does not require internet connection.
Can speak words - not sure about this one
6. SPB Radio - online radio with nice touch interface and ability to add own URLs -------- Pandora or Slacker Radio
7. Nitrogen - music player
8. AlReader2 - ebook reader --------- Aldiko and Kindle for Android
9. Panoramic Calc Pro - great calculator with a lot of things and with
self-updating currency rates ------------- REAL CALC along with another app ConvertPAD
10. Resco Photo Manager ----------- android built-in photo manager fits my needs
11. PPC Pim Backup - for contacts/email/appointments backup/restore ---------- google sync (integrated in Android) is the best way along with Calendar, Google Voice - everything is synced under one google account
12. SPB Backup - full system backup/restore --------- backup ends on you copying whole SD CARD on your computer - kind of simple since Android is on sd card
13. Panoramic moTweets - twitter client ------------ many sense widgets would take care of this
14. LMT - allows me to close/open apps by sliding fingers in different directions ------------ do not think there is an app for this.
15. Pigeon - ICQ client ----------- fring client
13. PortGo - similar to fring, but finger friendly interface for SIP calls ------ nimbuzz or fring or skype would do it...
16. FPSE - Sony PS emulator --------- do not think it exists
17. Slacker Radio - similar to Pandora, but I find it better ------------ Slacker Radio
18. GrooveMobile - client for GrooveShark service, where you can search and listen to music - Pandora
19. ArkSwitch - program task manager, shows me what is running,
close apps/close all, finger friendly - not sure if you are going to need one under Android - there are plenty but android is not WinMo to need one at all times...
20. MobileTag - barcode reader with price check on internet. --------- ShopSavvy, Barcode Scanner, Google Shopper, etc.
Very handy in determining "deal or no deal"
21, Official Livejournal app for mobile ------------ google integrated documents - check 'em out
22. MS Facebook app ------------ Facebook for Android would do it

See italic answers and this should help at least a lil bit!
Would like to make some additions to the poster above. First of all, the video player you would need is RockPlayer. Still in beta i believe, but plays all kinds of formats without having to convert the video: you can just put the divx files you would normally watch on your computer on your microsd, and RockPlayer handles them just fine. Subtitles support included.
You also mention Grooveshark, they have developped their own app for Android for quite some time already. Haven't used it, but I suppose it's good.
CoPilot is very good if you don't have a mobile data plan (or wish to navigate abroad), but the built-in google maps navigation is probably the best there is, and it's free.
Other recommended apps:
- Tasker: paid, extremely advanced profile manager. Triggers include date/time, battery %, power source, headset plugged, wifi enabled, app launched, ... - basically everything you can imagine
- Wavesecure: paid, very innovative remote lock/wipe/backup/trace application. There are alternatives by now, but Wavesecure was first and I believe they are still the best.
- Chrome to phone: free, app that sort of links google chrome or firefox (google fox2phone) to your phone. Send links, text, google maps, ... with just 1 click, very useful at times!
"7. Nitrogen - music player"
- For what it's worth, i find that winamp for android is a very good music player, much better than stock. Just an opinion but worth checking out.
"16. FPSE - Sony PS emulator --------- do not think it exists"
- There is a PS Emulator. It's on the market and (I believe) it's free, or at least donation-ware.
Also, for what it's worth, at the moment with running android from SD card, some people experience data loss when copying over usb. The best solution so far for me is use FTP. There is a free FTP server (just search on market) and FTP clients for all platforms are widely available. I personally use FileZilla.
Sorry for not being more specific with app names but I don't have phone with me ATM.
Regards
Thanks for suggestions. Keep going !
Also I forgot one app which I find useful in WM and want to see something like that on Android.
23. SPB Wireless monitor. Calculates you data usage. Can produce charts per application/day/month/date range/etc
Hum Copilot is a big chit compared to Igo Primo !
FPSECE is 3x faster than the PSX4DROID
...
...
No Igo , no Android for me ! mails, task not synchronised, bad for job
Android is same as Iphone, good for games and useless apps ...
Best music player for Android is PowerAMP. You can find it on the market for $5 bucks. It is worth it..

wow, a pro hater..
now seriously why posting, if you have no clue dude...
Copilot looks not as great as iGo Primo, but at least it has TTS voices. My main concern with CoPilot are maps/poi. With iGo I can mix and match maps/poi from Navteq and TeleAtlas. And I new they are pretty reliable. Not sure about maps/poi source for CoPilot.
But iGo Myway does not have English TTS
I also tried Aura. Interface is better, but again - not sure about map/poi source and no TTS. Some routing issues too.
For now I settled with iGo MyWay but it does not look as nice as Primo. Even with skins and such. And no TTS.
BTW ... for RSS/Podcasts I ended up using BeyondPod.

Please help...
recently changed from wm6.5 to google android for the htc hd2.
coupla quick questions.... every time i reboot it loads windows again and i have to click the haret.exe file to load andriod again... is this normal? will it slow down my phone and is there any way to completely get rid of wm6.5? i followed the xda thread for android and it was great but unsure of this last bit...
secondly i backed up all my contacts email etc. on spb backup and on ppc pim manager but neither backup file is compatible with android. are there any programs that will work with both operating systems so that i can transfer contacts easily?
Thank you in advance!
In WM6.5:
1. Sync you PIM data (contacts, calendar) with your google account via exchange. (creage google account before if you do not have one, then setup google sync via exchange as described here: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299 )
2. Flash one of the Android NAND ROMS from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=928 and during firs boot enter the credertials of your google acooudt from 1st step. All you PIM data (contacts, calendar) will be downloaded from google account.
