DROID Eris Gets 2.1 TODAY - Hero CDMA General

So HTC just tweeted that the 2.1 rollout for the Droid Eris starts TODAY. This blows. =[

Let the crying begin.

That sucks. Sprint needs to get off their ass and give us our 2.1.

I just flashed back to 1.5 from Zen's ROM. 2.1 ROMS are nice, but not everything works. Especially facebook sync. I don't think I've flashed a rom yet where it worked lol

2.1? I want 2.2 damnit! I've been running 2.1 for months!

Yeah, this is getting ****ing ridiculous.
Although most of us may have rooted and loaded 2.1, it;s still not officially supported, so we're all walking around with ticking time bombs.
I just wish Verizon would offer incentives to Sprint customers to switch. I'd take an Incredible tommorrow if I didn't have to pay a ****ing ETF to Sprint.

Yeah, OK, that was dumb, but we're still running 2.1 on rooted phones completely unsupported.
2.1 has been out for ****ing ages, and everyone's now getting the update, except us.
I have it, but I keep getting sense reboots, cameras crashes etc etc.
At least if it happened in the wild on 2.1, we'd be able to moan at Sprint, instead of the devs..
Just sayin'

I don't know why people are still upset. You bought it with 1.5. It is not a right to get 2.1. And besides, we have 2.1. Almost bugless. I'd even say it's got less bugs than the 2.1 we will get.

Name one phone on the planet that has been updated from 1.5 or 1.6 to 2.1 before today.
Who is this "everyone else" that you're talking about. The Droid Eris is the only Android phone on earth that has received such an update. If you believe the Best Buy leaks from last week, Sprint nearly beat Verizon to the punch, but evidently found a bug at the last minute.

you do realize however stable our current 2.1 roms are they are far from the final we will get.

I'm not sure what the big deal is. Now the devs can start making GPL requests for the Eris 2.1 kernel code... Should speed up the rooted, optimized ROMs after the Hero source comes out. Is anyone really going back to Sprint RUU when they release this ? All this means is that Verizon QC for software updates isn't as good as Sprint's -- I'd watch for a Verizon maintenance release about a week after Sprint drops the update.

Does getting the Eris ROM and eventually it's source help make the Hero's ROMS better?
Edit. Or what he said...

Hero vs. other phones re: speed

Hi all,
First post, but I've been lurking for a bit.
Anyway, I just got my Hero with Sprint about a week ago and am running DamageControl's current ROM. It's a killer phone, but from what I understand the Droid has more processing power. I've got another 3 weeks to give back everything and get free Droids with Verizon.
I know this is a Hero forum, but I wondered if anybody knew of a "benchmarking" resource for all Android phones.....
thanks!
PS You guys are amazing! I can't believe the amount of product that comes out of this board.
as we all know, the hero was obsolete was 6 months before it came out. youll go broke trying to keep up. save up your months with sprint and get the evo when it comes out, you wont regret it ;-)

i like the hero and am willing to stick with it until the evo, and as for whatever comes out after that...i dont know. (android, htc, ect) will eventually release their own iPad, im sure, but i guess its a matter of what YOU want. i got a great plan with sprint (54$ for unlmtd everything) with great coverage (detroit it a major city, its bound to be set up good for the 3G user) and a highly customizable phone to say the least (ill admit i was disappointed when i got the hero, learned of the nexus and all the new upncumins) and am excited to move onto the evo, and can wait patiently.

I was able to see the evo up and running the other day.... WOW. Slim and sleek and very fast... took about a 1/3 or less of the time it took the Hero to open stuff. It was running on 2.1 as well and look really similar to Damages 2.1v5 ROM. This handset is going to really help out Sprint. Only thing the one I saw lacking was they hadn't activated the 4g on it yet.

Yeah, after studying competing prices, I don't know that I could stomach what everybody else is charging. I just don't get how anybody is competing with Sprint at this point!
I'm paying $129 -%15 for two lines, 1500 minutes, web, txt, and mobile-to-mobile. ANYBODY else charges $40-80 a month more!
I guess it's good for us they're so desperate for customers

Stock 2.2 eventually?

I know Froyo was just recently announced, and the incredible has yet to be rooted, but assuming that it eventually does get rooted, is it unreasonable to assume there will be a way to get a stock 2.2 ROM onto a rooted incredible?
I just read over on engadget that "most" HTC devices will get Froyo by the end of the year, and being a sense-based device, I would assume it would be receiving a Sense-ified 2.2. Thanks for all the help.

Just a few threads down this is being discussed. It looks like Evo, Droid, Incredible will be getting it in June. This is not a huge leap like it was going from 1.6 to 2.1. It shouldn't take too long for this to be rolled to all.

The Droid Incredible and the Droid are two different phones by two different manufacturers.
For our phones there's no specific information, just that Droid Incredible and other flagship phones are a priority.
I would guess that if the EVO gets it, we are too, considering they're both CDMA, SenseUI, and are the flagship android phones for the carrier they're on. it wouldn't make sense not to.
Yes yes, as I pointed out in that thread. I was piggy backing off of your hope and optimism. My bad.

I never implied we were getting it in June. All I ever said was that the N1 and Droid were getting it in June, because they're both stock Android.
The only way we're getting it in June is if we manage to root by then and can install a port.
Even if we don't, we'll be among the first SenseUI phones to get it. When exactly that is depends on a lot of things, how different the API for 2.2 is, how long it takes HTC to produce Sense for 2.2, how long carrier testing takes, whether there's an early leak, etc
Well I can tell you this much, jit and sense do not play nice together, so it may be awhile for HTC to get all the bugs worked out.
Its supposed to be way faster than even 2.1 so on our device it should be awesome. I just wish (though I doubt HTC will do it) they would give us the option to turn off Sense UI. Its nice but it really should be optional. That would make 2.2 complete for me without rooting. Otherwise this phone will never be complete for me until rooted.

Sorry if this question has been asked in any of the other threads involving Froyo - but are there any specific reasons why SenseUI and JIT don't work well together? Is this based on experiences with custom ROMs for other devices using JIT and SenseUI or is this something that's a bit more officially recognized?

as soon as my incredible has root with custom recovery i will be releasing a 2.2 custom froyo rom based on stock 2.2 as well as porting any 2.2 sense leaks that are released. all we need is root

When, when, when!?

I have a rooted Evo running 2.3, and I know a lot of you won't want to take time to help a fellow OP out, but. When will Sprint release an OTA 2.3 update for the HTC Evo 4G? Any ideas? Facts?
Youre input would be much appreciated, thnx.

Probably never...it's been suggested that manufacturers will be skipping 2.3 and just move to 2.4.
And Sprint won't be releasing anything anyway, this is all on HTC.
Manufacturers make the updates, send to carriers, carriers approve and and bloatware apps and release.
Yeah 2.4 sorry, so probably not then? Wow that's lame.

Ohh he meant sprint doesn't release updates and that its up to htc, no I know that I just meant sprint actually getting ahold of the final product and sending it out to us. I thought he was saying regardless of htc having a 2.3/2.4 update sprint will just be all natzi about it and not give it to us after they have ruined it via, bloatware and other disgusting apps. Lol sry my bad, so hopefully in 45 days cause this has taken way too long.

Epic gets 2.2.1 and we get 2.2????

So why does the Epic have 2.2.1 and we only have 2.2??? can someone pull the 2.2.1 kernel and stick it in one of our roms???

I understand why they pushed it out to us, but still if they have 2.2.1 on the Epic then we should, at the very least, have seen one or two leaked builds with 2.2.1. So far all of our post "shutup" release's have all been 2.2 and those have even stopped coming.
I guess my main reason for posting was not really complaining as much as could we rip the Epic apart and use it in our custom ROM's?

Krylon360 mentioned that Samsung changed their ports they used for their ROM updates so they have had issues trying to find the ROMs.
Does the Galaxy S 4G ship with 2.2.1 or still 2.2? If so, then the old Vibrant may have just been passed over (hopefully only temporarily).
The Epic shipps with Eclair. It just got its FroYo update, and it's 2.2.1 instead of just 2.2.
2.2.1 on Galaxy S phones runs much better than 2.2 (which has worse performance than JI6 on our phones, IMHO).
The reason why we don't have 2.2.1 is because so many people cried about the Vibrant following the Vibrant 4G announcement and T-Mobile/Samsung wanted to save face.
The fact that they pushed 2.2 out and they haven't heard many complains about KA6 from customers (I haven't seen many on FB/Twitter/T-Mo Forums) means that getting 2.2.1 out to Vibrant 3G users is probably one of their lowest priorities.

HTC Falls Behind Motorola In Updates

Motorola and Verizon have released the Gingerbread 2.3 OTA for their phones while HTC is still sitting on it.
So much for HTC being the leader int he cell phone game. Yeah they make better phones but whats the point if the competition is updating and providing faster service.

Well bub, thats the price of a locked/signed bootloader & Moto Blek...
This is why we have XDA my friend.
There's also a difference from Eclair to Froyo from Froyo to Gingerbread.
Froyo actually offered something new from Eclair, Gingerbread does have some benefits but mostly nothing groundbreaking. The X and the Evo were updated to Froyo in about the same time frame of their release.
Didn't the Droid X2 already launch though?
Guess it makes sense, if that is true, that they'd start pushing the update. Isn't that the idea with the Evo? Wait for the successor to drop, then update the past device?
Either way, it'll be here soon enough.

Pretty much, sprint isn't letting ANY of their phones offically get GB until they release the 3D with GB on it.

Think about it, its a marketing ploy. Want GB on sprint, buy the Evo 3d, then after they start selling it, oh by the way, the rest of you guys already signed up can get your update now. If they were to update our phones, what incentive would we have to get the 3d since we already would have GB??

Sure, for those of us who are into that, but for the casual user they dont even know about better hardware. They just know GB is the latest software and thats all they want.

I'd say it's the other way around. The casual user would want a better phone over OS tweaks that they may not even understand.

LOL. Let me call my wife and ask her what she thinks of Gingerbread. I'll assume she'll have no idea what I'm talking about and maybe bring up cookies.

I agree. I don't think HTC makes better phones btw, motorola kills them in battery life, and I prefer phones made of metal.
I also would rather believe that people in general would want the newest phone over the newest software update. The "average consumer" probably has no idea what the latest iteration of Android is or how to even check for the ota for it lol.
Is it really that big of a deal? The majority of us have rooted phones running custom ROMs anyway. There are handfuls of GB ROMs, both Sense and AOSP. We've had GB on AOSP ROMs (CM) for months now, while the Droid X didn't get GB ROMs until recently.
I know sometimes it's just to ***** and complain about something for the sake of *****ing and complaining, but seriously, is there any need to say that HTC isn't the "leader of the cell phone game" anymore just because of one simple software update?
Also,
Unlocked bootloader >>>>>>> OTA GB update
Holy speculation based thread we have here batman!
Sprint "holding back updates to all phones" comments are silly.
Also, who cares? With HTC phones I can run Cyanogen and have had Gingerbread for what three months now?
With Motorola I can say I have root...which is meaningless.
