Motorola and Verizon have released the Gingerbread 2.3 OTA for their phones while HTC is still sitting on it.
So much for HTC being the leader int he cell phone game. Yeah they make better phones but whats the point if the competition is updating and providing faster service.

Well bub, thats the price of a locked/signed bootloader & Moto Blek...
This is why we have XDA my friend.
There's also a difference from Eclair to Froyo from Froyo to Gingerbread.
Froyo actually offered something new from Eclair, Gingerbread does have some benefits but mostly nothing groundbreaking. The X and the Evo were updated to Froyo in about the same time frame of their release.
Didn't the Droid X2 already launch though?
Guess it makes sense, if that is true, that they'd start pushing the update. Isn't that the idea with the Evo? Wait for the successor to drop, then update the past device?
Either way, it'll be here soon enough.

Pretty much, sprint isn't letting ANY of their phones offically get GB until they release the 3D with GB on it.

Think about it, its a marketing ploy. Want GB on sprint, buy the Evo 3d, then after they start selling it, oh by the way, the rest of you guys already signed up can get your update now. If they were to update our phones, what incentive would we have to get the 3d since we already would have GB??

I agree. I don't think HTC makes better phones btw, motorola kills them in battery life, and I prefer phones made of metal.
I also would rather believe that people in general would want the newest phone over the newest software update. The "average consumer" probably has no idea what the latest iteration of Android is or how to even check for the ota for it lol.
Is it really that big of a deal? The majority of us have rooted phones running custom ROMs anyway. There are handfuls of GB ROMs, both Sense and AOSP. We've had GB on AOSP ROMs (CM) for months now, while the Droid X didn't get GB ROMs until recently.
I know sometimes it's just to ***** and complain about something for the sake of *****ing and complaining, but seriously, is there any need to say that HTC isn't the "leader of the cell phone game" anymore just because of one simple software update?
Also,
Unlocked bootloader >>>>>>> OTA GB update
Holy speculation based thread we have here batman!
Sprint "holding back updates to all phones" comments are silly.
Also, who cares? With HTC phones I can run Cyanogen and have had Gingerbread for what three months now?
With Motorola I can say I have root...which is meaningless.

thank you for replying so quickly now my question is solved haha
Im hearing that everyone thinks theres gonna be a minnimium requirement of 1ghz processor or better to run gingerbread. I believe this to not be true!!!!! This is from a google android employee!!!!! So stop assuming, if the aria dosent get the gingerbread update its because of manufacturers and the cell providers, they are the decision makers and my HTC Aria should be able to run it just fine and of course SET CPU or another CPU overclocker could help if needed. jus a matter of time now!!!!!

Someday the cell phone manufacturers will have control over their own products instead of the cell carriers. There is no reason why HTC should not be able to release 2.2 for those of us who choose not to use AT&T as their carrier. They have control because people just keep on buying those subsidized phones, when that stops (probably never) then HTC can release software when they feel like it, and not when AT&T says it's ok.
Cheers.
The whole "Apple" has AT&T in their pocket thing is BS. If anybody has someone in their pocket, its the other way around. You dont think that Steve Jobs wants to pocket money made from other carriers selling his product?
I dont think he realized how popular the iPhone was going to be. That will all change come February. No more contract!
Im not really upset that they havent rolled out Froyo to the public yet... I have had it for a while with CM. I mean, if Team Douche can roll out Froyo for the phone, than why cant a major corp put Froyo out?
It indeed does not make sense. We will probably get Gingerbread before Froyo rolls out for the Aria.
Sad as that may sound!
Sent from a borrowed SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You have to realize you can't just roll out an update all at once for every single device. To ensure it's n00b-friendly there has to be a lot of testing or else you'll get dumbasses who sue these days. AT&T has their hands tied with the iPhone, it's their flagship product at the moment, so devices like the Aria are down on the list in getting updates (because we all know AT&T has to inject the ROM full of ****-ware before it's ready right?).

“Such a review will be based on various factors including, without limitation, the overall effect of such Update to Samsung products, the system requirements, the structural limitations, and the level of cooperation from the component suppliers and the software licensors”.

While I am not siding with them - they really aren't the same devices. If they were we could easily port vibrant and captivate roms. There is clearly work that has to go into each variant of the SGS line. It would probably make the LEAST amount of sense for the Epic to not get 2.3 officially. Primarily because of its 4g Radio and Front Cam - features that the others lack- even though our device is probably the most complicated to get working right.

Yes, yes, for profit. We all get that they're in the business of selling phones, not giving free updates. That's why I read an interesting blog about paying for OS updates a little while back. I'd gladly pay a few bucks to get honeycomb or ice cream on a 6 month to year old phone and to have them out in a timely fashion. Then Samsung and all the other manufacturers would have an incentive to actually put out updates for phones as well.
I have a rooted Evo running 2.3, and I know a lot of you won't want to take time to help a fellow OP out, but. When will Sprint release an OTA 2.3 update for the HTC Evo 4G? Any ideas? Facts?
Youre input would be much appreciated, thnx.

Probably never...it's been suggested that manufacturers will be skipping 2.3 and just move to 2.4.
And Sprint won't be releasing anything anyway, this is all on HTC.
Manufacturers make the updates, send to carriers, carriers approve and and bloatware apps and release.
Yeah 2.4 sorry, so probably not then? Wow that's lame.

Ohh he meant sprint doesn't release updates and that its up to htc, no I know that I just meant sprint actually getting ahold of the final product and sending it out to us. I thought he was saying regardless of htc having a 2.3/2.4 update sprint will just be all natzi about it and not give it to us after they have ruined it via, bloatware and other disgusting apps. Lol sry my bad, so hopefully in 45 days cause this has taken way too long.

It will feel horrible because it will be a buggy mess. Let them get Froyo sorted out before they begin to use this as a buggy base of their Gingerbread build. I do believe Samsung will deliver Gingerbread, but dont even think it will be before Summer 2011. I have nothing against Samsung really. They could do better with software support though. And you will find ridiculous skepticism among people at XDA for anything positive that is "supposed" to be coming from Samsung in the future.
Thats true, well then, I guess, well just wait and see, anybody else want to share opinions?
updates!
I personally do NOT think we will ever see another update past froyo...
We might get a froyo update to fix bugs and what not but as far as 2.3 ect, they will leave the epic by the wayside and focus on the galaxy S2 series and other newer phones. The epic was just a complete failure and they know it, thats why they are come out with galaxy S2.
well idk, its a tough call...
took a long time for froyo...
but then you can look at it like "well samsung sees how the US folk are all pissed off so they might start trying to release more updates bla bla"
if the epic does get gingerbread, dont expect any update past that..because past that Samsung will expect us to do our part and buy another Samsung device.
I think personally Gingerbread will come just to rebuild some goodwill with the people of this country. Then maybe with that, we would buy the next uber Samsung phone. At least by getting Froyo, my Evo owning friend can now shut up how his Evo is soooooo much better than my Epic because it hbas Froyo (even after showing him my pics and videos look better, screen looks nicer, can play more vido formats natively) because that was the only thing he could point at. Now we're even.
If Gingerbread comes, it's not going to be for a while; otherwise, why would they have bothered releasing FroYo?

True. Im already regretting buying my Atrix, too late to return it though. But also Motorola was asking for beta testers to sign up to test 2.3.

Looks like this is for unbranded galaxy s phones though. In the US it takes longer cause the carriers are modding the OS to add all their useless bloatware crappola an it's usually the carrier that pushes the updates not the manufacturer. But hopefully with the update to enable hsupa we get a couple of extra goodies.

True. Im already regretting buying my Atrix, too late to return it though. But also Motorola was asking for beta testers to sign up to test 2.3.

motorola is getting beta testers for gingerbread? did they put up a sign up like for the update or just announce it?
Motor is asking for beta testers? If so...then GB will be released

it makes sense that the phone that's been out for a year gets it first....
since google released the 2.3 source code, the company has been doing nothing but preparing an update most likely. motorola however, needed to iron out kinks in their initial 2.2 release before they can consider developing a 2.3 OS, and then allowing carriers to modify it to your liking.
obviously you didn't think about what has to be done to come up with a polished 2.3 update before it can be released as an official OTA update. you really can't fault motorola for this not being out yet. it takes a lot of time, testing, and effort to release a finished product.
Raybond, I agree with everything you said, but its hard to cut Motorola any slack for this when the phone should have come with 2.3 in the first place. On top of that they lock the bootloader so we cant get 2.3 working on our own either....

well, the problem is that they probably started dev for the atrix's OS before 2.3 was released, so it would have been even more work, and probably would have caused delays in their release of the phone if they had shipped it with 2.3
I know locked bootloader is a massive drag for 3rd party dev, but you really can't fault moto for any decisions they've made with this phone other than that.

I guess this is the price we pay for having a subsidized drvice. Unfortunately... although we pay double for it in years of service.

not really, you are going to be paying a carrier either way just without a contract. the cost of the subsidy doesnt get added to your bill. either this or buy a phone for full price like in europe.
i read that google is going to be releasing ice cream sandwich sometime this summer. maybe motorola is going to skip gingerbread? i wouldnt mind waiting until the end of the year if it means we get 2.4.

You would have to skip over "Gingerbread" AND "Honeycomb" to get to ICS.
That's not gonna happen...

I would if my phone wasn't unlocked..

EDIT:
My fault!!!! Sorry guys!!!
I didn't read the whole post from moto forum. At the end of that post there is an edit, that says it was about the 1.5.7 update we already got! My mistake, my fault, sorry

actually you're not skipping honeycomb....
honeycomb is a totally different series in Android OS, tablet-specific series to be precise (3.0)
So, gingerbread is 2.3, and ICS is 2.4. Also, rumour has it that ICS will have full dual-core support, so it would make logical sense for Moto to not waste any time with 2.3 and go straight for dev in 2.4

ice creme sandwich is a blend features of both gingerbread and honeycomb made specifically for phones. you will not be seeing honeycomb on an android phone backed by google. that one reason google is not releasing honeycomb source yet, they dont want to have honeycomb phones out there.

i believe that it has some modicum of support for dual core, but is not completely optimized for it as 2.4 will be.
that's just my understanding, if someone could provide a link to prove me wrong then i'd freely accept it.
Gingerbread as currently released for SGS has some glitches but guess what Samsung just released the source code! So we should be seeing fixes and tricked out kernels/ROMS/system apps very soon.

I saw the signup sheet too. It never hurts to waste a little time each day looking through these forums. I swear I saw a link for it. I looked at it and saw some sign up thingy on Motorola's website.
