Opera Mobile 9 vs Opera Mobile 10 - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Themes and Apps

Opera Mobile seems to have an update. I installed it, but it didn't fully replace the pre-installed Opera 9. What's the deal with this new version? Is TP2 fully supported? Are most of you using 9 or 10?

opera10
Yes in opera mobile10 it has 2 key features. It features opera turbo which makes pages load faster and it features flash so you can play youtube and other flash videos

thanks. did you fully uninstall (or try to?? is it possible?) Opera 9, first? Opera 9 seems to be pretty heavily integrated with Sense/TFlo. My booksmarks in the internet tab would still open with 9?

All Opera Mobile Official Thread
For more info have a look on my signature link

the main differences between 10 and 9 is that 10 will use up so much of your memory that it will force wm to close just about all other programs. if you use any rendition of htc sense you will hover around 80 to 90 percent consumed memory with opera 10 (people will say thats not true but i have tried 10 along with every memory saving tweak out there on two phones and they are wrong). it is also slower... again people will deny this, but again it is true. Its features and UI are much better than 9 but the trade off is not worth it.

Installing Opera 10 doesn't (and can't) uninstall 9, and neither can you...it's baked in to the factory ROM

Ok you want to take it all off and restart do these steps
1) delete opera mobile from storage card / your not finished yet
2) go to settings / go to system / go to remove programs
3) highlight opera mobile and remove it
Ok now its gone bye bye zarpy style.... Now download the version you want and enjoy

Best Browser for the Mogul/memory expansion?

Hey, I was just wondering what you guys thought the best WM6 browser was. I'm currently running Picsel and besides the long page load times, it's going great. It also eats up an unhealthy amount of memory so I was wondering if anyone managed to expand the system memory. I've heard mixed opinions about different Opera versions as well as Webby so any experienced reviews on those would be awesome as well. Of course Deepfish is great but still can't get my hands on it, so oh well.
im running opera mobile 9.5 and love it, havent had a memory problem yet, and rite now there isnt a way to expand memory w/o taking the device apart

i tried 9.5 and it sucks on m ogul icons are so big i liked the older version
much better
opera 9.5 renders nicely, but it is slow and as the previous poster said; most icons and menu options don't work (as it's made for a VGA device).
I'd stay with Opera 8.5 which works very nicely.
im using skyfire and its been working great. havent run out of memory yet while using it. and it supports flashlite 3 so it fully works with things like youtube
Y'all must have the wrong version of Opera 9.5. There's plenty of post about it. There's a QVGA cab made, the works just fine on the Mogul.
I too use Skyfire, and it seems like the best option for pages with animation, video, sound, flash, etc.
Opera, is very nice though. I wish, it played flash and stuff like Skyfire.
I'm running both Skyfire and Netfront v3.5. Netfront seems to be a little quicker, though skyfire works pretty well, just takes some time to render the different zoom levels.
Going to have to try the latest versions of opera mini/mobile since I haven't used them in a while.
Using Skyfire and Netfront 3.5. Skyfire is great for multimedia, but doesn't seem to handle downloads yet, while Netfront 3.5 is great at downloading but is pretty disabled because it's still in the technical preview phase...I do want to try the camera-based navigation when it launches though! Haven't tried Opera in a long time.
Where do you find this Skyfire?
you have to be on a waiting list for skyfire. go to their website, skyfire.com, and you can sign up, but ive been waiting for months and havent received my invite yet. itll be a while but sign up now.

you must have tried the vga version, i have the qvga and its quick and looks greaT!!
so far ive used the majoity of the versions of Opera ad i must say that the 9.5 is working great. there are a few problems but they r minor and b fixed w a few taps. as for Skyfire...i just signed up back in early april so i dont expect to get my invite for another couple months since there r ppl on here saying that theyve signed up months and months ago. btw, ive heard rumors of a web browser called "Re-vmp'd". its supposed to be an almost exact duplicate of the 3G iphone browser...no sure how accurate that info is but its worth a shot.
L8rz,
Kaz
The ipone uses a mobile version of Safari. it works well, but doesn't have flash support, so hopefully they added that in with the version that ships with the 3g iphone.
Skyfire doesn't render jack. It just pushes pre-rendered images to your phone; the faster your internet the faster skyfire is. (Also consider their server speeds etc)
I'm also pretty sure flash works the same way, it's just streaming video/audio. At least this is the feel I got based on average latencies of either technology.
It does burn ~9mb of ram though, but remains fairly constant there. It may use less on the release version after they switch out of debugging releases.
I use Safari. there is an open source port of it availale on sourceforge.net made for wm5/6

im curious, what username and password are you using to log into the the skyfire browser. that is of course, assuming that your leet googling skills have allowed you to realize that the skyfire browser, even the one linked, is a closed beta, only available to beta testers. yes, you can download it, no you cant use it...

if you signed up on their site a month or two ago, you can use the login credentials you provided then. if you didnt sign up for the beta, then yeah, you are right, the CAB is useless to you. i logged in with the credentials i supplied 3 months ago, im using it. nothing to write home about. crashes when i go to any site that has an animated GIF, lol...great browser.
As funny as this sounds I have tried many of the programs previously listed. I am back to using PIE! Not without some additional programs though.
I have a program called MultiIE that enhances PIE to allow much more in the way of options. Best about this program is that it adds TABBED browsing to PIE! And yes it works but EATS memory like candy. Downside is that its not free.
I also swear by TCPMP & FlashVideoBundle. While not full flash will at least work on YouTube and several other select sites. Best about these is the ability to download & save any YouTube videos you want.
These programs ONLY work with PIE. That's why I've stuck with it.
Yea still
There is no browser that is capable as skyfire, supports flash 7, 8, and 9. Browses faster than piscel, ie, netfront. Smoothest page navigation by far. It just lacks a few features, but keep in mind it is a beta. But I wouldn't trade it for all the other browsers. If I didn't have skyfire I would settle for netfront but it seems to eat crazy ram. You have to close it before phone is fully functional again.

Post your Opera settings/secrets/hints. All versions!

I post this here and not in the General section, because I'm interested specifically about best configuration for the X1.
What is your configuration in opera:config? Any secrets or tips? How to achieve best performance? Fast, responsive and lag free Opera? How to fix the annoying crashes? Etc, etc, etc.
Anything that comes to mind peeps. Post it for the win!
Just curious - is there a reason you're using 9.5 versus 9.7?
Anyways, I changed the adaptive zoom to 480 to make verticle reading much nicer.
Under performance, I increased "the Max Connections Server" to 12-16, "Max Connections Total" to 32, and disabled "Reduce Max Persistent HTTP Connections"
Turning on "Automatic memory cache" under user prefs made Opera non responsive and crash happy.
Other than that - it runs well; hasn't crashed on me yet.
Yeah I actually use Opera 9.7 which is much superior,
besides it has a screwed upload.
In 9.7 increased possible tabs open to 5,
plus changed:
Go to "User prefs"
3) Uncheck "UAProf URL enabled" to disable mobile view
user agent
spoof user agent "2" for smalller font....

Because 9.7 sucks at the moment IMHO. It is not user friendly at all. I am not going to be a beta tester lol.
Thanks for the tips .

Sorry to go off topic, but to you guys using 9.7b, what bugs are introduced, and what features do we lose that we had before? I'm guessing volume button zooming, and smooth touchpad scrolling are two features that get lost...unless you hack them back in.
I've always had issues when changing from the oem Opera version on past HTC devices, so that's why I'm asking, and that's why I haven't bothered to upgrade, and maybe whey orelsei hasn't either.
Back on topic, how do you get the scrolling rate to be go further/faster in Opera with each finger flick?
The biggest difference was the hardware button scrolling, but i found the overall hw acellerated scrolling more preferable. Just a personal preference.
The only bug I've noticed repeatedly is sometimes when clicking that star button for your favorites, it opens up with a scroll bar on the right. When that happens, I am unable to scroll down the list via finger - dpad only. This seems to happen when Opera is still loading a page and I suddenly click the menu tab and click favorites. (or so I've noticed)
Odd bug, if I use the HW keyboard to type in something at the address or search bars, pressing the enter key just dismisses the bar and opera switches back to full screen reading. I need to actually press the graphical button on the screen to get Opera to open the address/search I typed in. I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to work though.
doministry's tips are cool though - I hate it when some websites insist they show you the mobile version regardless of your prefereces.
Off topic, but Opera Mini 5 is MUCH fasterif you use that turbo mode setting. It's on average +2x faster on my X1 than Opera 97b1 with Turbo mode on. I with 97b was that fast... can't have everything I guess.
So to you guys using OperaMobile 9.7:
how to set the browser to store downloads to Card?
Lately everything is stored to internal memory, even when I choose a memory card!
@orelsi
Well, you must admit with 9.5 we were also beta testers!
As for 9.5 vs 9.7, I appreciate much faster menus and less crashes
(however the flash support is still a pain...)
By using UserScript you can hide the adverts in 9.7 (and I'm guessing 9.5)

When you are talking about downloads .... I was trying to setup default download folder to storage card\downloads, but with no success. Every time I have to change from internal memory to storage card, then change folder for downloads. It makes me crazy Any idea how to make it automatically choose specified folder for all downloads?
Great tips and info guys! That's exactly what I meant for this thread. I guess it should be about all Opera version not 9.5 only. The more, the better .
@ doministry
I mean that 9.7 is still in beta, while 9.5 is a finished product. I have no doubt that I will change to 9.7 when the final product arrives.
@ sonus
I have noticed that the stock Opera build is the most stable one as well.

How did you get 5 tabs available on Opera 9.7? I still can only open 3.
Looks like I found it.
Opera:Config > User Pref > Maximum Allowed Tabs > 10
I can open 10 tabs now! Not that I will need it though, but cool nonetheless.

In any and every version of Opera (even the desktop version) type Opera:config in the address bar, and you'll get the option to edit just about anything you could ever desire, including the max tab number. Do a search for tabs in the Quick Find that comes up, and you'll see what you can edit as far as tabs go. FYI, a restart of Opera might be required to have changes go into effect (I don't recall, since its been a while since I toyed with the config setting).
Anyone tried Opera 9.7 build 35432 or 35443?

Thanks doministry,
so i'll give it another shot.
Although I like the "normal" scrolling with the O-Button.
Is the D-Pad doing a "normal" scroll then or is it jumping from link to link as well?
I'm asking because I customized my 9.5 build a lot and now (sort of) migrating to 9.7 is just a pure hassle if it doesn't work the way I like it in the end.

No there's no "normal" scroll here.
I use 9.7 'cos it's waaaay faster in UI/menus.
And less crashing than 9.5.
The ony single reason why I still use 9.5 sometimes
is the upload photos on my blog.....
Honestly can't wait to see a final
with hopefuly Flash 10.1 there.

My 9.5 (16702) stopped crashing after I ran the "fixOperaFlash.exe".
And can display all webpages PIE can, but much faster.
Only thing is hw-keyborad is not working in forms (in opera ui it does, dunno why).
But no "normal" and therefor fast scrolling (9.7) s*cks as well IMHO.
I'm not using the opera UI/menus very often.

How to uninstall Opera?

Simple question:
How do I uninstall Opera browser from my HTC Touch Pro 2?
I browsed through many posts and there is lot of flaming and discussion on whether Opera is good browser or not, so even if there is some useful information out there, it is buried in useless posts. Lets try to focus here only on the issue of uninstalling Opera...
or even better, how at a miminum stop it running permently in the background (telstra rom)
Stop Opera running in the background :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532948
If your ROM comes with Opera you can't uninstall it. You can flash a ROM that doesn't have it.
delete Opera 9 files?
I much prefer Opera 10 to 9.
If I can't uninstall 9 are there any Opera 9 files I can delete to at least free up some space?
Cheers
If it came on the ROM all you can delete is the cache, cookies, history, temp files etc.
All the Opera program files will stay in place unless you flash a ROM without them, although without the "push" if you don't use Opera they shouldn't make any difference to everyday usage so I wouldn't worry too much
I deleted the files and reg entries off of mine.....

Opera 10 questions

Is there anyway to have Opera 10 use the Tilt 2 (Stock ATT ROM) use the Zoom bar to zoom?
Also, Opera 9.5 (Stock ROM) is always loaded in the background so it loads fast, I like this. Is there an easy way to make it always load Opera 10 in the background instead of stock 9.5?
There's no way in Opera 10 to zoom using the zoom bar, 10's not built to use it, and that functionality may never be available. I would sugggest checking out the zoom bar multi-function software listed in the "software worth having on tp2" thread in this forum. Maybe a later update of this software will be able to provide this functionality, but its worth having it the way it is now. As for keeping Opera 10 loaded in memory all the time, honestly I dont know. Gotta feeling it'd use up alot of ram all the time when ur not using it though. I guess the load time never really bothered me, and I use Sense 2.5 and a lotta other crap too, so I wouldnt be able to afford that much memory for something I wasnt using
maybe try putting the opera startup or whatever that thing is in the the startup folder in windows. maybe? idk if i'm not good with all the technical lingo.

You might check out, read through, post in the "All Opera Mobile/Mini versions: Official thread"
i wish the zoom bar would work again. i hate the 2 level zoom. the back button no longer works either in 10 like it did in 10 beta. i think ill post in that thread to see if anyone can get it to.
Thanks McBrain. While that thread did not help with Zoom, it taught me how to enable auto rotate which is nice.

[Q] Will we ever get the full Opera Mobile for android?

I don't mean the opera mini available in the market, but the full Opera Mobile like the one we have in winmo. It runs circles around the android webkit browser, like a Ferrari vs a schoolbus
Only news I've found was last December when they released it to oems, but I haven't seen any phone that has it yet. I wouldn't even care if it comes in 40mb package like firefox, just as long as I get it.
Anyone has any new info or insights?
opera10 doesnt support flash like webkit does though...although, it was very responsive and fast.
id rather use opera mini for fast browsin w/out flash content. and den use webkit for flash contents.
Well actually after 2 months of repair I switched from winmob ro android and Im missing the tab function - imho I dont surf so often on websites with flash on my HD2. Greetings
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yeah flash is not a big deal to me either. It's nice to occasionally open a video, but it's much smoother to load it in a youtube app.
I understand the hold up is probably because Opera doesn't want to use the android native code for their browser, just hope they come up with something soon.
Go to Android Market, install Adobe Flash, then install Dolphin Browser. It doesn't get any better than this! Tabs, pinch to zoom, gestures, it has everything I need and it is blazing fast.
I do like Opera Mini, other than the fact that it does not support Flash. As far as Opera Mobile goes, I don't know when we will see a version of it for Android, I have been waiting too, just like everyone here.
HTR
like someone suggested. try dolphin or dolphin hd browser for tab functions.
