Android hidden secret codes - Droid Eris Android Development

I've come across this list of "secret" codes located here: http://www.askvg.com/google-android-hidden-secret-codes/
I was wondering...
If you give the factory reset command (27673855#) on a rooted custom rom'd phone, what will happen? Will it go back to the original OS (1.5) or will it reinstall the custom ROM?
Thanks for any help,
~kb

I'm just afraid it's setup for a default OS and if it's not there....bad things may happen, but I'm not sure.

it would be great if it did work but i have to assume this has been tried. It most likely would reinstall your current OS.

It will just reflash the leaked 2.1 vX that you have stored in NVRam on the phone and wipe everything to clean state. That is including your SD card. It is more of a Service providers way to put a restocked phone back into inventory to resell or loaners for the under 30 day returns.
We found out in earlier 2.1Leak v1 in a test to swap sd cards in the middle of an update that the phone stores the image in NVRAM the first pb00img run through and the check screen the second time is just unpacking the image for install.
That is the protected memory we so wish to get access to but moved on to other methods.

NVRam doesnt have a rom stored in it. We have read/write to nvram, wish it had a rom.
It will just wipe your data/cache partitions.

JK 1.41 ADP1.1 to JF 1.41 RC33 APPS ON SDCARD ?

Had to Do a Wipe to upgrade from JF ADP1.1 to JF RC33 and had my apps on the SDCARD. Copied the modded files mouint & init back to the phone, and just retraced all the steps to reinstate. Doing that makes my g1 hang at the Splash screen.
Should I format the EXT Partition and start all over again from scratch?
Is there anyway to get the apps back with minimal work or since I wiped does that mean the apps are still on the sdcard but the launch info and icons are gone, not familar with linux and how the phones os works, I would assume its like windows in that if I had programs installed on a drive other then the OS partition and I formated and reinstalled the OS, even those my programs are still untouched, all the registry and launch info is gone from the OS database, so it won't ever run the programs again, without a reinstall.. yes/no?
just some apps were developer apps that were outside the market, and I just don't remember there names to get them again

I dug through the post last night and must of missed it, anyway I reflashed the r33 and radio update until it halted at the stuck android.
Then I popped up command prompt and ran the android2SD batch files set and it got it back up and running, with some prayer

I too had to do a wipe and no matter what I do about the EXT partition, it doesnt want to go away. Even if I use a different SDCARD. It has something to do with phone itself or unless I'm missing something. I tried doing a reinstall of the DREAING.nbh file and reformatted EXT partition and it still says 32mb or so used out of 1GB.

Undo apps2sd?

Hi all...
I've been getting a lot of suspicious errors recently (force closes and app shortcut names disappearing) and I'd like to go from apps2sd back to just a normal setup with my apps on the internal phone storage.
Can somebody please verify that the instructions here are up to date? I'm a little nervous about wiping my data (or bricking my phone).
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Apps2SD
Also, can somebody tell me whether doing this will wipe out the (single) app I paid for from the Marketplace? If so, can I redownload it, or will I need to pay for it a second time?
I originally got apps2sd set up by using the recovery ROM prior to flashing Modaco's custom ROM v1.1.
The easiest thing to do would be to load the new RA 1.5.1 recovery image.
Then boot into it.
Go to Partiton SD
Select FAT EXT3 SWAP
and then set the partition sizes of EXT3 and SWAP to 0
Is there a reason you want to do this???
This runs a very very minimal chances of bricking your phone. The other method on that Wiki page has more potential to get you in trouble.
Did see the market place question.
There is a method laying around somewhere to copy all of your apps back to the phone instead of loosing them. Restoring a Nandroid backup would likly put them all back into the /apps/ directory sd card or not. apps2sd just changes the location of that directory really.
But the market does keep track of your google account and what apps you purchase, you wont have to re purchase (maybe on a totaly new handset).
hope my jiberish has made sense

At first I was interested in the whole apps2sd process, but have yet to implement it on my rooted, Fresh 1.0 Hero since so far, I haven't really seen a need for it.
But if you were to 'turn on' apps2sd and then decide later that you don't want it, there's a possibility of bricking?? Although I assume you can always reflash the RUU if something like that were to happen? Hopefully?
Think I'll stay away from the whole offloading applications thing for awhile.

The possibilities of bricking the phone are very slim, but they still exist. If a phone is truly a brick, not even RUU can help. RUU has to be able to detect the phone is there in Windows, so if its beyond that RUU is useless.
Nothing to worry about as long as follow the *usually* very well written step by steps across the interweb.
If it makes you feel any better I have only heard of one or two people to brick the Hero. Most things are recoverable.
Yeah, sorry, I didn't expect it would brick the phone so much as badly mess it up - like if it expects to run apps from the SD card and they aren't there I could see the phone being tough to use as a phone, but it wouldn't really be "bricked" in the sense of not responding to user input at all.
As far as why I want to do this, I haven't really seen a huge need for apps2sd yet, and when I was recently helping an app developer to debug their app it was just one more weird variable that seemed like a possible source of problems. I'm also hoping to start developing apps myself soon, so having a more vanilla phone seems like a good idea. (I also was influenced by the Fresh ROM apps2sd rant, to be honest.)
Anyhow, thanks for your replies. I'll probably repartition the card from RUU and then restore from Nandroid at that point. Will a repartition wipe the card filesystems out, or is the partitioner smart enough to preserve the existing data?
What I did is RUUed back to 1.2, OTA updated to 1.6
Flashed to the 1.5.1 image
(At this point I went to mess with the partitions and there was no ext)
Flashed to Fresh 1.0

how do you update the radio rom??

Hi Folks.
Just been issued heros at work and wish to update the radio rom...How is this accomplished??
regards
Lohtse
Firstly it needs to have a recovery image installed I recommend Amon-Ra v 1.6.2.
Secondly you need to find the radio rom you wish to flash and put it onto the root of you phones sd card.
Thirdly enter the recovery image you have installed by holding power and home button from the phone being off.
Then select the radio.zip to flash.
Everything I have said here can easily be found how to do via searching this forum or its wiki.
also www.theunlockr.com will help with installing the recovery image.

First you will need to install the custom recovery console if you haven't done so already.
Then download your updated radio, put it on your SD, load into the recovery, then apply update. DONE!
If that is too brief,... let me know,...
EDIT... Ooops,... too late.
way to complicated...
Too much to do and can screw up..... At least with winmo and symbian was a few clicks...
hmmmmm think will ditch android.....
really? its not complicated at all when you know what your doing. In fact I can say its a damn sight easier (and safer) than modifying blackberry roms and from what I hear also Windows Mobile.

I came from wimo to android, and as it is said, it's quite hard to catch the thing at the beginning, but after everything seems easier than in wimo !! and more reliable... you have almost no chance to brick your hero after you installed the recovery boot.
radio : boot in recovery then select the good option.
rom : nandroid backup / install whatever rom you want / if you don't like it go for nandroid restore ( all you need is two Sd card.. the good one and the one for the "tests" ).... etc....
But at the beginning i was totally out but with a little time.. reading some posts (here and on the web) ... one day everything was more clear !

Its not hard at all. You can have the recovery installed and the radio updated in 5 minutes.
For step by step instructions follow the "Installing a recovery image" section in BTDAG's guide linked in my signature.
Then further down the same post, in the second yellow box there are instructions on "Updating your Radio".
Guys, the OP said he was issued the Hero at work, then two hours later said he was going to ditch Android... so what then, he's quitting his job? Troll alert. Don't feed the troll.
As to troll comment(yes offence has been caused)....hmmmmm.... Am going back to the trusty Kaiser... WE DON'T HAVE TO USE THE HERO.... We live in free(ish) world.. And the Phones are issued as an update to our old duty phones... Also I'm not the only one who uses them that feels the same.
Now to updating being easy. Gulp I must be eeer dum!!! Du hu Du HU must be the TROLL in me!
I have tried to install recovery image thing and well just cant get it to work... And now I find I have to root the hero too so things will install to sd card!!!! WTF this should all be standard like winmo and symbian etc...
I have been using smart phones since the Ericsson r380 and so far Android has failed to impress to the degree I am beginning to hate it....
Am far to used to having simply andfull access to everything..
Android is a HUGE learning curve that I suspect I may not have the patience for..

Wahey!!!! Good job man.
Ok,... So now you have the recovery image all you need to do is pick a custom ROM. Personally, I highly recommend MCR3.2 (link in signature at botom). It is an Android 1.5 ROM but is stable and fast, what more could you want for a work phone. This ROM is rooted and has apps2SD enabled. Once you have installed the ROM you will need to remember to create an ext2 partition on the SD card (easily done through the recovery). Then you are set to go!!!!

You need to create an ext2 partition on your SD card through the recovery again. I cant remember the exact wording but something like "create ext2 + fat" or something along those lines.
As far as I know, once that has been done all apps will install to SD.
Someone with more knowhow than me correct me if I am wrong?... CAULI?,... LENNY?
Can someone who knows please answer this question:
Are you 100% sure that flashing the Radio ROM does not affect the phone RF Calibration ?
Thanks!

Yup, certainly as far as MCR is concerned. On the first reboot it will move all files from /data/app to /system/sd/app (& similarly for app-private) Nb /sysytem/sd is the mount point for the ext2 partition. All it does is move the files over & then replaces the /data/app (& app-private) directory with a symlink to the new location. That way future installs, updates etc all automatically go to the new location.
You can always check yourself with a terminal emulator & the command ls -l, or using a file manager like Root Explorer, if you're curious. Some people think it's not working because they see available space in internal flash drop as apps are installed, but that's because app data & the dalvik cache remain on internal flash, principally aiui for reasons of access speed. The saving you make just from shifting the apks to sd is more than enough for most people it seems.

A set of tables usually stored in NVRAM that takes into account the slight differences in the components used to build your phone. Every single phone is calibrated during manufacturing.
If the calibration is erased, it will look like it works but you can have all sort of problems from poor battery life to random drop from the network or poor sensibility (not to mention the higher than expected radio levels you could be emitting right next to your brain )

Cant boot anymore

Hi folks, i'm looking for 2 days a way to solve my DHD problem:
It can't boot anymore. It pop up the "htc quietly brilliant" screen, play the boot sound and, start this step again, and again, and again...
So I'm googling a LOT about how to solve this, if exist a way to restore the original rom. Because i'm thinking that was the problem, my original rom is gone.
That happens when i try to install 3 softwares from appbrain, my device got freeze and i hit the power button to reset. So, after that, my device is gone.
So i came here, to ask you folks: There is a way to recover the original rom ? Without send to warranty (because it spend something like 1 month here).
I'm not a mobile hacker or something, i'm just trying to be happy with my device.
Thanks a lot and sorry for my poor english!!
Perhaps try booting to the bootloader, by holding Power + Volume down button. From there, you should be able to do a factory reset, which may or may not fix your problem. Worth a shot at least, imo
And if it does not work when you do a factory reset, you can use a rom.zip from HTC RUU to restore your phone.
Now the important thing is to know which HTC rom you are running. If it is unbranded, 1.72.405.3 is a sure shot. Download the RUU.exe from Stock roms thread in android development subforum, and run it. When the window pops up, open run prompt, and type: "%TEMP%". Then search for rom.zip, copy it to your desktop, rename it to PD98IMG.zip and put it to your SD card (I hope that you have a card reader). Then just reboot to bootloader as tmh described, and watch the magic happen
Then if your phone is branded, you can still use the same technique to make PD98IMG.zip, but you have to get the RUU that matches your branding. There are lots of RUUs in android development subforum, just search.
Hi guys,
thanks a lot for quik reply!
I perform the procedure indicated by tmh, but without lucky ;\
I think it is unbranded. I buy it at Portugal and i'm using at Brazil right now.
I'll perform your tip jkoljo.
I'll post a repply to let people know if it works or not.
Thanks a lot!!
Hope the advice the last guy gave helps , a factory re set may work fine and fix the issue. Iv had 3 dhd since the day of release , the second one I had wouldn't switch on, had it replaced by Vodafone . Not sure weather or not they will give you a new one . Hope u get it fixed

Sorry ask for your help again, but at Official thread (thread number 841207) for DHD files, both 1.72.405.3 links are broken.
So i search for another thread, and found another one, but when i run the .exe, it ask for a USB connection to device, so it appears wrong.
Could you gimme a hand to find the correct file?
PS: I can help with a web hosting to all correct files.
You probably found the correct RUU, now proceed to %TEMP% and copy rom.zip to desktop.
You can find RUUs here: http://xdafil.es/index.php?path=DesireHD/RUU/
I am not completely sure if those zip files are actual rom.zips, you can check that. Open up the zip, and if it has a long list of hboot, system, android-info.txt etc, then it is rom.zip and you can just go ahead and rename it to PD98IMG.zip.

At "showthread.php?t=667728&page=2", i found a guy with the same problem i think, here is the quote:

I suspected it had to do with the EXT3 partition.
Solved it by first flashing the OTA 2.2 ROM (for rooted users) as this does not use the EXT3. Then used Rom manager to recreate the EXT3.
Now all ROMs that use the EXT3 run fine!

You are welcome.
What happened was that after a reboot of the phone the phone started rebooting in the boot sequence, i.e. a boot loop.
I tried a lot of things and nothing worked.
Finally I suspected that the problem might be with the SD card. I had a backup, so I had no problem doing a factory reset.
Then I booted the phone without the SD card.
The phone booted fine.
That way I was certain that the problem was with the SD card.
I had 2 partitions on the SD card, an EXT3 part and the rest was a normal Fat part.
I could still read the card, so I made a backup of all the data on the card.
Then I reformatted the card using windows.
The phone booted fine with an empty, reformatted, SD card.
Since I use Apps 2 SD, I had to recreate the EXT3 partition.
If your rom does not use this, you do not have to do this.
After recreating the EXT partition, put back all files that I want on my SD card.
My advice would be to do a factory reset and after that boot the phone without the SD card.
If the phone boots, you know the problem is with the card.
Hope that helps; good luck!

Hi folks,
boot without the SD card, doesn't work =(
I'm really without luck with this.
I do:
- Factory reset
- Clear cache and userdata
- Boot without SD or/and SIM cards
- Reflash RUU WWE 1.72.405.3 Radio 26.04.02.17_M2
- Reflash RRU WWE 1.72.405.3 Radio 26.04.02.17_M2 SF
- erase all SD
One show was use OTA update.zip, but at this step i got "invalid operation"
SO, nothing works!
Well, it appears a lost battle =\
thanks folks for all help.
Yeah, there must be something wrong in your device itself, for example a motherboard fault. Send it back to HTC.

[Q] Seriously messed up glowlight

Hi lovely people,
Ive managed to mess up my glowlight - Ive managed to have a look at the partition table using noogie and the rom partition is showing as unallocated. I've tried data recovery to no avail. I dont suppose anyone has a complete image of a uk nook simple touch glowlight by any chance, or even just a copy of the rom partition that I can copy back into place using minitool partition wizard?
Thanks for reading folks

You don't need the QR code to download the .zip. Just click the name of the file up there ^, it's to the left of the "Click for QR Code" text.

The eighties? Wow, you're an old pro, then! :good:
I, on the other hand, wasn't even alive in the eighties!
Let me know how that /rom partition treats you.

Ha! Old Pro indeed Old yes. Pro? Definitely questionable. :good:
Will do. Just having trouble now creating a fat32 partition. The various programs ive tried only let me make a 16mb fat16 partition and after putting the rom data on it, the nook still doesnt want to boot. There may be other problems with the rest of the software. Ah well. I'll either get there or buy another e-reader )) But the challenge is more entertaining.

Have you tried booting NookManager from your sdcard and using the "Restore factory.zip" function? That seems to work very consistently.

If it was logical, I'd totally give you a full image, but the problem is that each device has its own serial number - if I give you an image of my device, then your device will have mine's serial number, which won't work out so well!
I'd love to keep trying to help you, though - Nook Touch related things are really my forte.
Let's start at the beginning - in your first post, you said that "you managed to mess up your GlowLight". What did you do to mess it up?
Is/was your Nook rooted?
Will your device boot and be used properly, but the GlowLight itself just doesn't work?

Hi again, sorry for not getting back sooner - that damned thing called life always gets in the way
Yeah, it was rooted. I had used cwm and had adw running as a front end and had installed the screen lock bypass, but the bypass didnt work out so well - quite a bit of battery drain - even when left on a table(so no accidental waking up) - i tried to return it to stock - cant remember what i did tho - and now it just starts with the read forever screen and gets no further - it also seems that it doesnt power off and stays on till the battery is flattened. Trying to boot from the sd card using either nook manager or noogie works just fine tho.
I can see the partitions though minitool partition wizard and the Rom partition is "unallocated" there is also an unallocated space of 56mb at the end of the partitions.
I have tried recreating a fat32 rom partition and then copying the rom backup info from the factory partition, but no joy. For some reason, no partition software I have could create a fat32 partition directly on the nook, so I had to create one on the pc and then copy it over :-/
Thanks for the continued help btw

Are you interested in getting back the B&N functions? Because if not, then what I can do is back up my rooted GlowLight, factory wipe it back to 1.1.5, bypass Oobe (B&N registration), update to 1.2.1, and then make an image of that for you.
Beware, though, you won't be able to use any of the B&N functions if you want me to do that, because your device will have mine's serial number. But don't worry, it won't share anything except for that, so your device will be plenty usable.

Yeah, i tried factory reset with nookmanager, but when I pressed the button to choose factory reset, it came up with the screen that showed the start of progress, but nothing else happened - even after several hours.
by b&n function i assume you mean the shop etc - cant say I'm worried about that bit, but if It will be back to stock, with just the stock software on, that would be cool. )
How would I transfer the complete image? I presume fire up noogie and partition wizard, wipe(err backup) all the partitions on my nook and then copy your partitions over?

It will be back to stock, but you won't be able to register with B&N and/or buy any books from them. The Social features also will not work.
If you're interested, I'll make that image for you. See the "back up you Nook" link in my signature for a guide on making and restoring Noogie images.

EDIT - See OverByter's post below, it has shown me that this wouldn't work out.
Try his method. I'll only give you an image of my device as a last resort.
Your image will also have your mac address besides the serial number, don't think that this is the way to go, basically he'll have an unworkable clone of your device. Why doesn't he use cwm to wipe the partition and then either adb push the rom or use a flashable image?

Okay, I may actually have solved your problem! Try the following steps - it's called the "eight interrupted boot" method.
1. I am expecting your Nook is still stuck at the "Read Forever" screen. If it's not, go ahead and turn your Nook all the way off.
2. Now, press the power button to take it to the "Read Forever" screen.
3. After it's there, press and hold the power button again to make the screen flash black and go back to the "Read Forever" screen.
4. Perform step 3 seven more times.
5. After the 8th interrupted boot, your Nook will restore itself to the factory image that it came with right out of the box.
6. Done!
Hope this works! :good:
