just wanted to know what the H andG stands for when on the web, and if there better than3G
H = HSPDA = 3.5G
3G = 3G
E = EDGE = 2.5G (effectively)
G = GPRS = 2G

Could it be that Rogers is finally rolling out the 3G network in the 604/778
area? I heard the GTA would be first... well no surprise there,
but I figure these blips of the 'G' icon maybe hardware setup and testing
during the wee hours as to avoid making people go "OH GEE, IT'S FINALLY
A G'Thang".
Anyone else see that 'G' pop up after 2AM starting this week?
AE!
I presume that you mean "3G" or "U" or "H", not "G" (which means "GPRS"). Yes, Ottawa is now live as well (finally). Although, I am not too impressed with the signal strength. My office is about 500 metres from a cell site and I get four solid bars with GSM, only one or two with UMTS. I drove all over the west part of Ottawa quite a bit yesterday and never saw it go above two bars. Is this what we have to look forward to with UMTS, or is it just that not all of the cell towers are lit up yet?

Yes G as in 3G. My handset's OS ROM displays "G" instead of "U" for 3G.
Here in Vancouver they don't have it set up and working yet but I did see
the "G" blip on and off after 2AM this week. I confirmed with Rogers that
they are planning a 3G roll out in June '07 so this just maybe it but I'm not
holding my breath.

As far as I know on my handset the "G" is for 3G as in UMTS and the "E" is for
the Edge. I have always seen the E showing on my handset but this week
the G has popped up for a few seconds here and there after 2AM. When I'm
in Japan all I see is the G icon and there's no GSM or GPRS on SoftBank.

G is GPRS... Why would it be any different on your handset? Maybe you're roaming out of your edge coverage and hitting GPRS only territory.
Get happy when you see 3G/U/H.

Could be the OS ROM that I'm using isn't "stock".

no G = GPRS no question sorry! 3G = UTMS H = HSDPA this is a well known fact check your carriors information just to check. What rom are you running? If its a newer WM6 it like duttys rom you have in your sig it will show 3G or H for UTMS and HSDPA
Also the radio version has something to do with what icon is shown for what but all the newer ones should show 3G or U or H
G = GPRS
E = EDGE
3G/U = UTMS
H = HSDPA
Seems to me that you dropped to GPRS for a few minutes not to 3G

Thats right, this is the behaviour I've seen as well.
G = GPRS (2.5G, about 50-60kbit/sec)
E = EDGE ("2.75G", about 100-200kbit/sec)
3G or U = UTMS (3G, about 300-400kbit/sec)
H = HSDPA ("3.5G", about 1+mbit/sec)
If you really want to confirm if its 3G or not, switch your phone to WCDMA-only mode in the phone settings. If you don't get a signal, it means no 3G. Or conversely, switch your phone to GSM-only mode (this limits the phone to GPRS/EDGE), and if you are still getting the "G", it means that it is GPRS and NOT 3G.

Well, that's is weird because I swear (sometimes quite rudely ) that the
last time I was in Japan for a week my X01HT was showing the G icon all the
time. At first I didn't think anything of it because I had a dog's breakfast of
a setup on my handset and this and that was either sort of working or not
at all. So now I guess I will check the icons out more closely when I return
to Japan.

hi,
i am looking for the correct registry keys to see what data connection type the phone is currently logged in (i.e. active) or available.
i am talking about the different types of data connection referred to as E, H, G, U, ...
furthermore, if anybody could help me out with the values.
what i have found are the following two registry keys, but i want to check with you if these are really the correct ones.
HKLM\System\State\Phone\Cellular System Available
9 = Edge
40, 41 hex = HSDPA
HKLM\System\State\Phone\Cellular System Connected
8 = Edge
thanx
update:
so far we have got:
Code:
HKLM\System\State\Phone\Cellular System Available
8 and 9 = Edge
16 and 17 = 3G
64 and 65 = HSDPA
HKLM\System\State\Phone\Cellular System Connected
8 = Edge
16 = 3G
64 = HSDPA
still missing:
GPRS
Umts
some more?
please, have a look into your registry. i'll keep this post updated.
thanks
Cellular System Registry
Actually its:
64 - HSDPA
32 - EVDV
16 - UMTS (ie. 3G)
8 - EDGE
4 - 1xEVDO
2 - 1xRTT
1 - GPRS
2147483648 (80000000h) - CSD
This info is a little late, but hopefully this info would help us writing applications to detect the data connection state and even use the State and Notifications Broker.
Found the info here:

I'm using tmobile edge on my touch hd(which sucks). There were time where I see a G letter instead of E for the edge connection. Can anyone tell me what thats all about? I had it for a whole day and then my phone died and when it turned it back on with full battery it went to back to E.
G means GPRS. It's not EDGE, it's the next lowest bandwidth down. Basically you'll get "G" when you don't have a strong enough signal for "E"
Oh, and this should have been clearly stated in your manual if you take time to read it. (not being snide, there's actually some useful stuff about the workings of some of the software in there)
A Rough guide:
In order of connections speeds:
G = GPRS
E = Edge
3G = HSDPA (I think)
If you're getting G where you normally get E all it means is you are in an area where there is not a higher speed Edge connection.
EDIT: I took so long 'chaosdefinesorder' beat me to it!
Thanks for the info for a second there i thought I had 3g..... silly me ;(
nearly buts its
2g -2.5g = G
2.75G = E
3G = 3G (or on older handsets U this stands for UMTS)
3.5G = H (or some vendors call it 3G+ or 3.5G)
bear in mind outside of europe sometimes mov=bile telecommunications stanards are given diferent names
I.E. UMTS is only known as this inside europe outside of this area its also known as FOMA
also and ill stand corrected if need be but im pretty sire the american version of 3G is different than the european
MOD edit
Solution found. Thread closed
Ok seriously not sure how I managed this one but, thought it was cool.
See screen capture
I don't get it
Sent from my "Wheres my 2.2 Epic 4G" using the XDA App
the d under 3g in your task bar indicates you are NOT using 3g. you should show up or down arrows if 3g is active. d just means data available but not in use.
3G/D == 3G Data available
3G/Arrows = 3G Data in use
1x/D = 1xRTT Data available
1x/Arrows = 1xRTT Data In use
muhahahaha!

Thanks for this explanation. You got one for 4g as well? always confused by what's going with that icon too.

I was more convinced that "D" actually means "Dormant", as it is a valid state of the radio (if you look at the advanced radio configs.) However, if he/she has a valid 4G connection, as indicated by the lil' yellow wave, then the 3G symbol should disappear. I would suggest the following two scenarios:
1. You have a 4G connection, but cannot route data through it. I have experienced this before. In this case, the 3G radio would go live to take over.
2. The notification bar just burped and doesn't know which way is up anymore - a reboot will fix.
Is it possible, in the location I'm referring to, to change the following:
G to GPRS
E to EDGE
3G
H to 3.25G
H+ to 3.5G
4G
maybe with an xposed plugin. some roms have custom icons from carriers you can pick. i'd say its more hassle than its worth though.
Yes it's possible. You'd have to create the images though

If you prefer G (Generation) format, here is some information:
G (GPRS) = 2.5G
E (EDGE) = 2.75G
UMTS = 3G
H (HSDPA) = 3.5G
H+ (HSDPA+) = 3.75G
LTE = 4G
