Web on HTC hero t-mobile - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi just wondering what the H and G stand on t-mobile for when I'm connecting to the internet ,when not in a 3g area .

Google is your friend!!!

You will only get H in a 3G area.
IIRC, G is GPRS, or General Packet Radio Service, basically the slowest mobile internet you can get.
3G you obviously know, essentially Gx3, roughly 3 times the speed of normal GPRS.
H is HSDPA. High Speed Download something or other, also known as 3.5G and is currently the fastest mobile internet you can get on GSM I believe. I may be wrong though.
So, in order of ascending speed, the icons you may get when connected to t'internet are: G, E, 3G, H.
Hope that helps a bit.
EDIT: Something I feel I should say regarding the matter. Linux and Android are community driven, open source projects. People ask other people with more experience how to do things. If everyone's answer to anything was "Let Me Google That For You," even the mighty Google would have no answers. I learnt my way around Debian by asking on Debian forums how to do things like chown, chmod (the two things I remember as being most confusing), kernel programming and everything else I now do on my laptop as second nature.
Just because something seems blindingly obvious to one person doesn't mean it is to someone else and shouldn't treated with a generic and offhand 'google' response.
I don't mean to seem agressive or anything, but as it says on the back of learner driver cars "Please be patient. You were a learner once too."

No Wi-Fi Proxy? A small rant.

Seriously Google?
An internet enabled device without simple proxy capability? For more than a year already?
If there's some way to fix or get around this, it didn't show up in an hour's worth of internet and forum searching.
Doesn't this kinda seem like the single biggest networking oversight in the history of mobile devices?
Does anybody know of an official word from someone as to WHY this was left out? It HAD to be intentional, didn't it? You can't just forget to support proxies. Everybody uses proxies! Businesses, schools, everybody!
If I've just missed something here, I'll gladly eat my words and apologize, but dang. Five hundred bucks, and I can't even connect through a proxy.
My first Android device, and until I tried to take it to work today and use the network there, I hadn't been disappointed.
I haven't seen a non-transparent proxy for maybe a decade. The 1990's called and they want their network back
Though I'll agree that it should be included eventually, just for completeness' sake.
Hehe, indeed, you'd think they'd be dead and gone. But judging by several of the companies and universities whose networks I've used over the last few years, and the hundreds of people who've either starred or commented on Issue 1273, I'd say they're still a pretty integral part of a lot of people's daily network usage... It's just one of those foundational things, that should be supported, and that there's no reason NOT to include it, especially when all competing products do.

Update broke my 802.11n Wi-fi

Anybody else?
Before the update I had my D-Link DAP-2553 wireless access point set for 802.11n only even though my stock, unrooted hardware version 3 Evo would never show connected faster than 65Mbps (WPA2+TKIP), it worked fine.
After the update, it won't even connect unless I set my AP to b, g, & n mixed mode. Then the phone phone will connect but only at 54Mbps.
I've rebooted a few times, disabled fast-boot and even pulled the battery but so far wireless N has been broken for me by the update. Did a "forget" in the wireless settings and even reset my AP to factory defaults and set up everything all over from scratch but still no go.
Any ideas?

limpiador31, feel your pain. I thought this had only happened to me. I tried everything you mentioned with no success on fixin the issue. When I went into settings About Phone, Hardware Information I see that Wi-Fi is listed as 802.11 b/g when before it had n also. Since I'm rooted I nand back and Wi-Fi n is back. Just glad I'm rooted. Not sure why HTC would bork up something like that as that is taking steps backward and definitely not forward with respect to speed.
Thanks for the feedback.
Like you, I was trying too hard to fix the problem and didn't look at the obvious - 802.11n support has been removed from this update.
This is unacceptable and I consider it an unwelcome downgrade as my SpeedTest numbers on wi-fi have gone from about 11-12 down and 5 up to now 5 down and 3 up.
I'm going to do my best to stir up some trouble about this. People have been kind of meh because there's not a lot to see in the new update but for me, this new "feature" of losing half my connection speed jumped out and ate my face.
Everybody is so damned concerned that they can't get their Netflix fix which isn't HTC's problem, but losing a wireless protocol that's been there from the start is HTC's problem and I want it back!
I work in IT and am a geek/tech kinda gal but have strongly resisted rooting just because I know how much of my time I would invest in it but this may be the last straw that pushes me over the cliff.

I sent an e-mail to Peter Chou, CEO of HTC, to vent my frustration at his tech team for taking a step backward by removing 802.11N support. I also posted a short note on HTC's facebook page. But HTC is only addressing "kind" posts and not those reporting issues. Go figure. I loved the ROM but I use WIFI at work and 4G the rest of the time except when traveling then I usually am forced to go back to 3G due to spotty coverage.
My wi-fi says 802.11b/g after the update to 2.3.3 as well. Not sure what it said prior to the update to be honest. But before the update the best I could get on SpeedTest when in the same room as my Cisco E4200 was 10.65Mbps down and 3.61Mbps up with a 30ms Ping. Just a couple minutes ago, post-update and in the same room as my E4200, I got 14.01 down and 3.67 up, with a 21ms Ping.
Not really sure if my EVO is now faster on wi-fi, but I don't think the update hurt my wi-fi speeds...
YMMV...
It hurt my speeds on mu wifi. I was usually getting around 20-25 down and mow on getting like 10
if you cant live large, look big in the coffin!!!
After posting this all over the world, someone told me the Evo never supported wireless N so I did a little digging... according to most of the published specs I've reviewed, they only list the b/g standards.
When the Evo first came out with Eclair, even though the hardware had a chip capable of 802.11n, it was crippled by HTC. The great dev's here figured out that by changing a few lines of code, wireless N could be enabled. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=707218
When Froyo came out, the above wireless G speeds were unlocked in the update making the Eclair hack unnecessary. I'm guessing that due to lack of "antenna diversity" i.e. the Evo only having one wireless antenna that this fell short of the 802.11n standard so they maybe never advertised wireless-N? This would also explain why Evo's could only connect at 65mbps rather than at 150 or 300 like true N should do.
All I know is I use to connect to my A/P which was in N only mode (no mixed b/g/n) at 65mbps. After today's update, my Evo can see my A/P in N only mode but not connect to it. If I set my A/P to mixed b/g/n, my Evo will connect at 54mbps and no higher.
Regardless of the standard or b/g/n letter, my Evo now connects into my network at 11mbps slower than it did before the update.
Wow, that's some bull....!!! Is this the same with 2.3.4?? I am going to try SavagedZen 2.3.4 and see.
Same here
Router shows my EVO only connecting as 802.11g, though other devices successfully connecting to 802.11n at the same time. Settings > About Phone > Hardware Information only shows Wi-Fi: 802.11b/g. Why would they reduce such a key feature?!?
I sent a tweet to @sprint and @htc yesterday, no response yet. I'm trying @sprintcare now.

Yeah i got slammed by someone in the sprint community saying too may ppl complaing about a feature gone that was never supported by sprint/htc to begin with.
I did some looking and sure enough I couldn't find a single thing that stated the EVO supported wireless N officially from sprint or htc.
What I find real odd is that with the 2.2 update they tweaked the kernel to allow wireless N support in the first place. I am going under the assumption this update was rushed and hence there are some bugs and things lacking in return. I can't see them having a reason to take it out other than they rushed the update. I guess its slightly possible that it coulda borked the kernel or messed with other stuff but I highly doubt that.
I saw the latest kernel modified to fix WiFi n in the dev section under one of the ofical release threads

whose to blame? question

I have a question that I wonder any of the pros of this site can answer. whose fault is it that web browsing on android is starting to suck? is it android or the carriers? my example go to a pc and type Plentyoffish.com then do the same on an android phone and see the difference. same goes for the msn home page. your forced to go to the so called gay extreme page. to me the whole reason for getting android in the beginning was to browse the web while on the go as I would on my pc. some of you might say oh well web browsing isnt the only reason for an adroid phone. open source blah blah blah, apps blah blah blah. those are kinda of lame excuses. you can easily hack an iphone. and the iphone has more apps. originally android had a better browser but not any more. there are a few roms that still have the good browser. but most dont. who is to blame for the crappy ness? im starting to think my next phone may be an iphone. if I'm forced to use a crappy web browser it might as well be on a phone that has more apps. can anyone answer this question please
Not really sure what your talking about. If you mean you don't like the mobile view that can easily be changed to desktop view. It also depends on the type of coverage you have in your area.
Say what?

1) you would get alot more replies and feedback if you were to sound a tad more mature. To be frank about it you sound like an 8 year old who just got a phone from mommy and daddy.
2) to answer your question. a PC, regardless of Mac, Windows or Linux, has alot more RAM then these phones do. So the PC can process the information a-lot faster.
3a) Do not blame us, nor your phone for your ability to not search for the answers you are inquiring.
3b) if you go to your address bar and type about:debug you can change the flags so your phone will register as desktop and you will get the full browsing experience.
3c) you can load a 3rd party ROM and have that set as a default. I never look a "mobi.[page_name].com" address.
3d) you can always use a 3rd party browser. Firefox, Skyfire, Bolt, Dolphin HD all support full HTML browsing.
4) if you want an iPhone, don't make a threat. Just do it. We won't stop you. Just keep in mind news reporters in North Korea have more freedoms than iOS users.

yes I know about user agent but does not come stock with android browsing. you have to download a 3rd party browser. my question is why....web browsing gone from good to worse on android? is it android hindering their own browsers or is it service providers? keeping people from a rich browsing experience
hey dumbass! I have an android phone. a mythouch 4g in fact. 1) your calling me immature after resorting to name calling when you don't know me or know nothing about me, i believe you said I was acting like a kid who just got a new phone from his mommy and daddy. to which my response would be, your acting like a douche bag who insults people when he could just as easily ignore my question.
2) secondly don't tell me about pc and mac vs mobile devices. that just proves you don't know me A hole ( and I only say that because I feel like you insulted/condescended to me first) I know pc's and mac's have more memory and processing power. did you know that full web browsing including flash was once natively possible on android. now at days you have to either root your device and install a specific rom (something a lot of people cant do) or install a 3rd party that sometimes doesn't work well depending on the specs of your phone
3) don't blame you? you have a mighty opinion of yourself don't you. I know my phone isn't a real person. do you? lastly if you took the time to read my question it says whose to blame android or the service providers, not the phone or xda
lastly I wasn't making a threat, threat? who would it even be aimed to. I know about 3rd browsers I know about roms. these are not things developers and app makers should have to FIX! they should be standard! and in fact, they originally where. but there not anymore. so once again! my question is who is to blame. is android purposely hindering their browsers by mistake are the cellular providers redirecting our browsers to inferior mobile pages so people using their phones do not use up all of their service providers 3g/4g connections speeds. what is so hard to understand about the question. when buying a smart phone they force you to get a data package. then when you try to look at sites like, ebaumsworld or what ever you can't because your first to go to stupid mobile pages that don't even have flash videos. what is the point in having flash. what is the point of android if not the web browsing? fixing the mistakes and limitations of the platform? thats like going to a junk yard and paying the same price for a broken car that you would a new because when you fix the new car you can customize it any way you want. does that really make sense to you? i like android but I don't think its beyond criticism. no matter how good something is it can always be better. when you stop innovating you become stagnant

I sense a mod intervention or a flame war in the making.... But android has become more polished and shiny (sense...gross) due to user demand. neidlinger answered your question in a basic, easy to understand level at first until YOU decided to get mad for no apparent reason? If it seemed condescending you could state that politely and not fuel the fire or PM him. This has all been ridiculous. Your question was a valid android based question atleast and was answered on a lower level because frankly, lower post count thanks meter, grammar etc. Govern the response of the person trying to help you. If there was confusion on how the answer was given you should've asked, I'm not a mod but I'm just saying what should've been done.

Why is this thread still open? The OP is just another troll, I don't understand why he got the phone if he loves iOS so much. I have no problem with apple, but he should stick with what he likes, he's talking just plain nonsense about android for no reason. If this is how you get your kicks then I feel sorry for you. The browser if much better from the days of the G1 and is much better now I could tell you from personal experience, stupid flash ads are there and that's not on iOS is it?[not sure] Just be happy and stop complaining.

On topic.
So on what ROM, including stock, can you not surf the net like a desktop? I have tried every ROM this forum, and a few others, have produced, and EVERY single one had fully featured web browsing. Mobile view is set to default because not everyone has large data plans, and some don't have data plans at all. It's a safety net, not some evil plan to ruin your experience. Not all smartphones are capable of the full experience, but all smartphones are capable of mobile view. It's just smart for android to default to it. I have yet to come across a browser on any ROM (nothing 3rd party) that didn't have a setting to change the UA string to desktop.
And on a personal note, sometimes I prefer mobile view. It's a lot easier for me to read news articles and do other basic browsing, so it guess it comes down to a matter of opinion.

Is there anyway to make a WIFI Direct connection on the 5GHZ band?

Hi everyone,
I'm part of a robotics club in my school, and we use wifi direct with 2 phones to communicate between the robot and the remote control. We found that at times there would be a big delay between an input and a response from the robot at competition. We're assuming it has to do with a ton of other teams all using wifi direct at the same time and crowding up the 2.4 GHz band. So we were wondering if there was anyway to use WIFI Direct on the 5 GHZ band with the Nexus 6P or possibly any other phone you know of.
Thx in Advance
Bump... Huge problem at Worlds (lost our first two matches), because between FTC and FRC, there are over 1,000 WiFi devices communicating (or trying to and failing) on just 3 channels!!! Matches were being won and lost on the whims of the team phones' Wifi connections, rather than which teams were actually better. Our team (FTC #10298) is getting two Galaxy S5s for next season and really wants a way to use 5Ghz.
Build jammers and win your match that way. Lol. All jokes aside, I don't think there is a way for wifi direct on 5ghz.
Just came up in my mind. No idea how much dev time you have left, but you could build something to control your drone/device using a cellular connection like 4g?
Googling "drone 4g control github" should help you out.
We are actually in the off-season right now. Unfortunately, we are only allowed to connect via WiFi-direct. However, there are no rules against rooting/custom ROMs, so if there are any ways to force it to use 5GHz through rooting, that would be great.

Recycling or Projects for old US Cellular Vogue?

Hello, everyone,
I've found my old Vogue in a box, and would love any clever ideas anyone may have for how to reuse it. It's the US Cellular model, which sadly doesn't have wi-fi. That has limited anything I've been able to think of in terms of uses around the house. Any ideas?
It has Myn's warm Gingerbread installed, btw.
Thanks!
I have two of these laying around. Because of the lack of wi-fi, I don't see much use for them. I don't even think they are compatible with the modern cellular networks. If correct, the only way to interact is by tethering the phone to a computer, and that is pretty lame.
The only thing I can think of is trying to recreate scenes from Gossip Girl (the character Jenny used to use a white one).
