Hey there,
I purchased the HTC Hero from Sprint around a week ago, and it came with a stock 1.5. Had no issues at all, so today decided to try out the leaked 2.1 RUU. Updated without a hassle, but I've been experiencing some issues. This led to me repairing the bootloader and then trying DamageControl 2.08, and now finally fresh 2.0d. All installations went perfectly, nothing to call home about.
My issues are listed below:
It cannot automatically detect my timezone, and it has no clue as to my location for weather nor other features.
When I enable the GPS to go onto Maps, it locates me as around 1,000 miles off the west coast of Africa, whereas I'm in Pennsylvania, USA.
I can call my phone from another line, but no response on my phone (no calls received, nor missed calls).
When voicemails/messages come in, they flood in (10 new messages, etc, that have all stacked up).
I'm using the Wireless Tethering that comes with Fresh 2.0d, and I used PDANet/EasyTether prior to now (as my sole internet is tethering). I'm wondering if this could have at all affected it. Even with tethering disabled for a good hour, still nothing can reach me.
I've also updated the radio, and still no luck.
Wipe data and dalvik, reflash.

I wipe everything each time.
Now about to wipe it all and install the DarchLegend ROM.
I took my phone back to Sprint. I put the 2.1 leaked RUU on there, and took it to em'. Store manager swapped it for a new one.
I believe it was a hardware issue when it came to it. On 1.5, whilst I was tethering I'd not receive calls nor texts, similar to the all-time issue in 2.1. On the new phone which is running 1.5, it receives both whilst tethering.

you took the phone into sprint with a leaked/hacked 2.1 leak on it and they just gave you a "new" hero no questions asked?
It was nerving, I'll tell you that.
Claimed ignorance, that it was an OTA update. He then said how there'd been issues with the OTA updates as dropping a bar of signal screwed it up. He compared the Hero I had to the Hero in the store display noting it was different. He asked me if I did any software editing, I declined.
Told me to come back in half an hour, and hey presto, had a brand new HTC Hero awaiting me.

Picked up a brand new Sprint HTC Hero on Monday (10/12/9) and within about a day it had stopped working entirely and was swapped out by a Sprint Repair Technician for another brand new one. I wanted to share the issues/experience.
Having spent an entire day fiddling about with the device, I noticed a couple of processes freaking out and needing to be forcibly shut down. I found out that this was because it had 0 internal memory left. I think that this was because I set up my gmail app to sync absolutely all my email to my phone, which obviously took up all the memory.
Without really taking too much time to think, I just decided to do a hard reset of my phone and restore it to factory settings. All seemed to go fine.
But the next day I was noticing that I wasn't not able to receive text messages. I was still able to make/receive call, and send texts, just not receive texts.
Everything worked perfectly prior to the reset: could make and receive both calls and texts, browse the internet etc. - the only thing that wasn't quite working was the bluetooth connection to my car: it was able to pair fine, but anytime it tried to do anything e.g. make a call/play music via bluetooth, the connection would die. However, a bluetooth connection to just a regular headset worked flawlessly.
I spoke to Sprint Customer Service on & off for about 2 hours. They tried refreshing the text messaging service on their end a few times. They also had me check that my phone was correctly programmed: the MDN number had actually reverted back to the temp number I was given (I was porting a number over from TMob). However, even after correcting this MDN number, it still did not work.
I was tempted to just go and get a replacement from the Sprint Store, but there was a repair center about 5 minutes away. Very helpful guy there (who actually ended up staying an hour after his shift was supposed to end) took a look at it.
He was able to replicate the problem exactly as described above. He decided to transfer the number to a different phone (a palm treo I think), and all the test text messages came flooding down. Although this would point to an issue with the phone, this could not rule out a network issue (for reasons that he did explain, but I can't quite remember). He then tried a hard reset himself: didnt do anything.
Finally, he told me that he had a new Hero sitting in the back. He tried setting up this new phone with my number and it worked perfectly.
So in short, my phone is heading to Kansas City (Sprint HQ from what I understand) to be broken down and examined.
Sprint repair guy said he had never seen anything like it before.
Want to also mention that both the Sprint Store salesmen and repair guy were the most helpful people Ive ever met. My salesman was actually on vacation: when i called the store to report the issue, they called him and he called me...very impressive. The repair guy also went above and beyond to keep me informed on the progress (as I was waiting while he worked on it), not to mention him working overtime.
I literally ported over last week from Tmobile and have been blown away by their service.
Just wanted to share the story. Feel free to get in touch if you want me to elaborate on anything.
UPDATE:
The brand new replacement phone has done the EXACT same thing.
Contacted the sprint repair tech. He says that sprint techs have a private internal forum and that the issue has been reported in the past (one of the reports was from a sprint employee who experienced identical problems (on Oct 8th - prior to launch).
From what Ive been told, the internal memory being full is the first symptom of the issue and that android processes begin to be forcibly shut down, and then txt messages cannot be received. Apparantly Sprint/HTC have an idea of what may be causing the issue but have not been more specific than that on the internal forum.
I'm getting my Hero swapped out for a brand new one (for the 3rd time) after work today. I've been advised to keep high-end feature use to a minimum (e.g. google contact/mail/calendar sync etc) until he has heard back from his development team.
Your title is quite misleading. Still happy it worked out for you in the end.
Yah your title is pretty terrible IMO for the post content.
Glad it worked out for you. I had a similar issue and had to have the device re-provisioned which didn't work, reset the device after the re-provision and it worked without issues since.
I have had mine for a while and installed around 60 apps on it yesterday all while surfing the net and texting. Before I went to bed I power cycled my phone and it was searching for service. Didn't have time to troubleshoot it until today noticed it was force closing several different things randomly and said I was out of memory. I uninstalled several programs and had around 30 mb free and still random force closings and no service.
Ended up doing a factory reset which seemed to fix the issue as I can receive calls and surf the market and internet but I'm not receiving text. As a matter of fact people said they were responding to my texts last night yet I never received any of them despite being able to surf the market and play games on my phone.
So now I'm wondering if my hero is jacked up as well and I'm wondering if it's related to using up all the memory on the device but I'd think doing a factory reset should have fixed everything but it seems like something isn't getting fixed correctly as I just had someone send me a text to test my theory and I haven't received it yet I can still do everything else on my phone.
If you are auto closing everything without setting up exceptions you will have issues. My radio stack became unresponsive after auto closing everything and I had to go through the system files that were running one by one to place them on the exclusion list otherwise it would keep happening. Now no issues.
I had the same issues with not getting txt msgs at first. I told the sprint rep and he simply tokd me to reset my phone...and it works great since then
Update to Original Message - Brand New Replacement Hero w/ Identical Issues
Yeah, the title may have initially been misleading, but it turns out its spot on.
The brand new replacement phone has done the EXACT same thing.

I will keep you all posted (if any of you are at all interested). I never usually post my boring issues on forums, but I thought this was pretty interesting given how new the CDMA Hero is.
Yes pllease keep us updated as i had the same issues as you did until i resetted my phone. I hope an update will fix the issue

were you able to receive text messages after the reset? if so your problem is different to mine as a reset doesn't fix it at all

3rd Update - 3rd Replacement Hero
So I've just picked up my 3rd phone. The previous 2 are being sent off to Sprint HQ so they can determine exactly what is going on.
Apparently (as I think I mentioned previously), Sprint HQ have a very good idea as to whats going on but a) need to confirm it and b) wont tell the Sprint repair tech what they're thinking. In an email that HQ sent to the tech, they said:
“We should be hearing about a resolution shortly and I can check in with him later on today. I would simply let your customer know that this is the highest priority at development and they are close to a resolution.”
In the mean time, I've been advised not to install any non-standard apps i.e. anything but facebook/google. The tech has a feeling its down to one of the 2 memory management apps I used, Advanced TaskKiller Free and TaskKiller Free. Apparently the Sprint employee that I mentioned earlier that had this issue was also using a TaskKiller app. I was also advised not to set up any Microsoft exchange accounts as some problems have been reported, but I dont think its anything really to do with this (however, I'm following his advice all the same).
Should be hearing something from the tech guy early next week and will post the feedback.
mine is doing the exact same thing!!! i thought is was that nobody has texted me in the last couple of days but i was dead wrong..... im gonna try to uninstall task killer free and reboot to see if thats the problem.... if not, then back to the Sprint Store
Thats what happens when Sprint decides to patch up Android with CDMA support rather than waite for native in 1.6
You guys aren't just killing all the tasks when you are running these programs are you?

I had to reset my phone twice today just to get the internet connection back. Android is a joke or maybe its just sprint. Im moving back to winmo as soon as hd2 is here in the US.
I can assure you it is not Android, but Sprints implementation of Android on the Hero. Hopefully we'll get a 1.6 update soon. Hang in there, it'll be worth the wait.
i hope so. i really miss bluetooth transfer and exchange server is constantly on i want to be able to set peek times. i also want me notifications to repeat until i acknowledge them. missed call only works or missed calls and sms.

I have reset my phone three times now and still not working. I can assure you this has nothing to do with the network as I'm still able to receive calls and emails hence not the network but what I believe to be HTC. Let me clarify, I believe I have either installed an app that corrupted my ability to receive sms text or somehow messed my phone up however it's the phone itself that's not erasing all info when I do a reset like it should.
I still have audio files from sound boards I installed when I initially got the phone that are still present after four factory resets that shouldn't be. This is a phone issue and not a network issue. Sadly the phone is so new there isn't a rom I can flash to that would fix the issue as whatever I did to my phone a factory reset isn't fixing it. It's that simple, if HTC made it to where a factory reset put the phone back to the original state then I wouldn't have this issue or files present from 3-4 factory resets ago....
This is frustrating :O
It seems like I've been having on and off problems getting calls ever since I updated to 2.1. Right now I'm on DamageControl v1, but I've had this on the others too. Sometimes my calls go straight to voicemail or the caller receives a message that my number is not available at all! This morning all three things happened back-to-back when my girlfriend called me (first voicemail, then disconnected number, then it went through). I am using my phone with an Airave system, but I never had this problem in the past or on my other phones with with it. I have yet to test it in a non-Airave area.
yep.. been experiencing the same thing the past couple of days... exact situation this morning as u.. my wife called a couple of times and went thru the same thing before she actually got thru to me... im also using DC v1.0 ROM..

I have the straight to VM problem alot, even running stock. I think it is a problem with sprints network but with several calls in to them I get no where at all. The only thing they do is have me wipe and reset and they sent me an airave. All of which have done nothing to help the situation.
I think if more people call and complain then maybe Sprint will get a clue and fix the problem. Or not, after all this is Sprint that we are talkin about.
I had the same problem. Here is what I did:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5891057#post5891057
I had this issue when i used to run android on my old winmo phone. If this is a 2.1 rom causing the issues i may wait for awhile to install.
I have had that issue on occasion since I took the phone out of the box stock rom or rooted or 2.1.

Really? Ive never had the issue on stock or running a custom 1.5 rom?
yes I have, not all the time just every once in a while.
Hey all,
I got the July 27 leaked Froyo and went ahead and rooted to 2.2.
I have noticed a pretty serious buggy issue regarding the phone not detecting a 3G network so when I'm away from my wireless router, it only shows bars, no 1X or 3G.
I have two options at this point, one of which has done me no good. Perhaps someone can help me.
Option 1: Downgrade back to Android 2.1. (More on this later)
Option 2: Try and find a way to keep this version and get back on 3G.
Lemme explain: I tried placing the PB31IMG.zip on the SD card and going through recovery to return the phone to stock. Each time I attempted this, it told me the version was old and it failed. Is there a workaround on this or do I need to find a different stock ROM?
I used unrEVOked to root the phone and have not been trying to do any frivolous additions or subtractions. I just wanna be back on my 3G. Any and all help would be HIGHLY appreciated.
Thanks!
Did you try *228 and update your PRL?
Yes. It did not help.
Always have 3G coverage where I'm at too. So more than likely phone is issue unless a tower around here is down (which I highly doubt).
Toggle Airplane Mode on, then off.
JC
Sadly, toggling airplane mode has done nothing to help either.
Upgrade to the 8/1 version...see if that helps.
JC
Try shutting the phone off, then powering back on. Or possibly that combined with an airplane mode toggle. Also make sure your mobile network is on in the settings for wireless networks. This problem was common with the first leak. I have not had it happen since switching to the second leak of 2.2.
Considering the missing apps and media in the 8/1 Leak would it be ok to do Sky Raider or should I just try the 8/1 Leak done by aiccucs?

I believe mrozzeh also gave a link to the full version of the 8/1 leak, if you are concerned about missing apps/media...
Doing that update has not helped me.
I guess I'll have to go down to 2.1 again. However, as I said, it won't load the PB31IMG.zip. It says the file is old. Any ideas?
Stupid question....you did upgrade the radio right?
Yes. Radio is the 2.x baseband.
I would be VERY finicky to update that again as I do NOT want to brick my phone.
Ok, it seems I have found a bit of the issue that is causing it. My phone number and IMSI are not detected as my current phone number. Is there a way to program this or is it an issue where I'll have to have it reprogrammed by the local Verizon rep?

try a *228 and option 1 so the phone is reprogrammed. then do a test call to your vm(*86) and make sure it connects, you should not see the 3G symbol, when you end the call, the 3G should be displayed...give it a whirl
This did not work. There has to be a way to program the phone number into the phone. Any ideas?
i've been having this same issue... messing with airplane mode and rebooting a few times got it to fix... *228 and option 2 worked sometimes. just loaded up Adryns new evo hybrid rom, working fine so far (the problem was rare, maybe twice a day tops) and did *228 1, we shall see!
To no avail on these. I think I'm going to have to see a rep tomorrow and see if we can get the phone number (my actual phone number) programmed back into the phone. I think that's a VZW thing as I'm sure they won't run me through the methods to program a phone number.
I hate that I have to go back to Big Red over this, but it is important for me to have this phone up and running. Besides internet, I have NO other form of contact.
3g issue
I had the same problem and so have many others, I flashed Skyraider Rom and problem is gone so we know its not a buggy radio, I don't think there is a fix right now, but I've never seen a Rom so stable as the new Skyraider, so you might wanna think about flashing that Rom.
Coincidence. I've heard the same with my roms, from both ends of the spectrum. Its for sure a buggy radio, and how it interacts with Froyo. Once we get a 100% Froyo ready radio, I doubt we will ever hear about the issue again.
This is the first I've heard of someone not being able to get the 3G connection back at all. Is that what you are describing? I had it not turn on, then come back after a *228/2 or power cycle - but it always came back on. Just curious but are you on an Alltel plan by chance?
Can you make calls Contra? Did you pay your phone bill?? Are you wiping all data before flashing? Try the full second leak that they added to that post. I've been using it and haven't had the 3G drop in two days now. I just took that rom and removed a handful of apps I would never use. It's working quite well.
For the past four days, my texts have been coming in late. I have an EVO (I really should update my profile). Usually, the delay is about 3-4 hours. I also discovered that the delayed texts come in as soon as I make a call.
Sprint was utterly useless on the phone, and I wasted two hours with them. One of their representatives also said he would investigate and call me back, though I never received a callback or a voicemail. So much for customer service.
I've changed software versions twice, so unless there's a setting wrong on my phone (and if there are no solutions, I'll Nandroid backup and run the RUU restore to see if it fixes it), but I'd rather not have to do that. I'm currently running rooted 3.30.651.2, though I reverted to 3.29 and the problem still existed. I also tried reflashing the radio, wimax, NV, and PRI, and no fix.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Could very much just be tower issues where you are, give it some time. If the problem still persists even longer then I'd definitely want to consider talking to a higher representative, because what good is it if you aren't getting everything you pay for?

Has anyone else had issues with sending/receiving MMS since the gingerbread update? I have been unable to send/receive for the past 2 days and the update is the only thing that i can think of that may be causing the issue.

I'm Running stock with no root its working fine.
ive been having that issue with all gingerbread related ROMs that ive flashed and around 1 AM i start getting 1x instead of 3g and it makes messages forever to send and recieve
my mms take at least 30 minutes to send and 10 to receive
Not sure if this is an EVO issue, more so than a Sprint issue (On Sprint Android phones at least). I have had 2 different Android phones before the EVO which were stock, and have a daughter and wife that both have stock Android phones on Sprint. I have never seen proof that more than 1 in 4 of any MMS messages have ever been received successfully (to family members on Sprint). And I can't count the number of times someone has mentioned sending me a "picture" that I never received.
When I switched to the EVO (even before rooting and going to CM7 -- and even more so after) -- this trend did not change for the better. Sent 5 pictures yesterday to 3 family members (all on Sprint with stock Android phones), with not a one of them ever showing up on the other end.
I haven't been able to send or receive MMS since last week. I'm wondering if it has to do with the new radios because is started around the time that I upgraded them.
I've also noticed that my phone doesn't sync my inboxes through my HTC mail app anymore. It doesn't sync the Friends Stream widget, either. I have to do it manually.
Edit: I went back to Myn's 2.2 rom but left the newer radios on. I'm almost done downloading the lastest Synergy nightly and I'm going to try MMS with that rom and see if anything changes. I'll provide an update later. Although I will say my phone was acting up when this happened and I had to call Sprint because I lost all 3G connectivity. After 4 phones call to Sprint, one was able to get my 3G working again but my MMS or sync stopped working afterwards and I just haven't had time to call Sprint again.
Edit: Using a 2.3 based rom did not fix my MMS issues. I still can't send or receive them. I guess I'm going to have to get on the phone with Sprint again. Fantastic.
I am also having this problem since June 5. I updated me and the misses evo Saturday night and was getting text but my phone was getting low space notifications 5x on Sunday so I did a factory reset and now I cannot receive text messages. I can send them out but not receive. Called Sprint tech support on Monday was in the Sprint store on Tuesday from 10am to 2:30pm and no fix an e ticket was put in on Monday for me to have the phone replaced. The store didn't have any evo's in stock how crazy is that. Today is Friday and still no new phone. I called Tuesday afternoon to tell tech support what was going on spoke to 11 different people order was put in for a new phone.
Now today my phone is dropping calls after 5 mins of talking and a really bad echo can be heard. The misses phone is working perfectly no problems what so ever.
I send and recieve just fine, but it does take forever to go through, sometimes up to an hour. I am running stock IT'S 2.3.3, but it was that way under Froyo with the old PRL, too.

Ok, after going through a bunch of forums I got mine to work.
First thing I did was go into ROM Manager and fixed permissions then rebooted.
Try that, if that doesnt work then also try
Use root explorer, and make sure it is set to R/W mode (read/write). Navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db and delete that file, then restart your phone. After the restart, you should be able to send and receive MMS messages.
I did both and now I can send and receive on my phone and my wifes phone.
She is running OMJ 2.3.3 and Im running MikRom 1.03.
With mine, I can't download while wifi is on. Might be a setting I'm not aware of, as I've never had this problem before. Searched and couldn't find anything.
I was havin the same problems called sprint and thier answer was wait till we send out a MR thats all they could say. I wiped everything and. Seems to work now but still some issues. Call sprint and let them know couse the rep did say they have to hear about from more than one person to start lookin at issue
