I have some important news for all those wanting to transfer videos across to the HD2.
Firstly and for some reason we all probably all realise now the screen resolution 800x480 is not supported by the graphics chip on video playback. i.e. I have found all my ipod/iphone encoded videos work so much better on the HD2 both with the embedded video player and also TCMP which I have as a stand alone video player. The maximum encoding for the ipod is 640x480.
Any-time I encoded at 800x480 I have always had problems of stuttering and pixelation and framming. Instead encode your movies at what the maximum ipod/iphone settings is at which is 640x480 someone please correct me if I am wrong.
The TCMP plays them smoothly with the -200ms audio delays setting to get the video and audio in sync whilst the embedded video player also plays them very smoothly albeit with the slight audio sync issue but you can zoom in and out now..
It seems just like the audio player which looks like an ipod/iphone copy the embedded video player is very much a copycat of the ipod/iphone video player with support only being what the max ipod video setting is at.
I guarantee this works for all your videos, etc. It's becoming more obvious that the software engineers at HTC used the iphone video/audio software and ported it across to the HTC whilst not utilising the bigger resolution which is a real shame.
Curious to hear what others think...feel free to reply with the above settings..
Yup can now confirm the 640x480 encoding resolution works and works bloody fast on the HD2 video is flying along and very smooth too. By the way the audio is nice and loud too as well..
Hope this helps others users wanting to watch a nice movie on their HD2.
Furthermore, the audio/video sync issues with the standard embedded video player are now very difficult to notice... I have watched a few videos now they seem very close but need others to confirm on this..
Maybe you should do a search for the video encoding threads in the Leo section...we've been playing 800x480 videos just fine for sometime already. Need to set a delay to compensate for the audio sync...but otherwise it's pretty good.

Disagree....the 800x480 works but with stuttering and glitching. This method above does NOT produce any glitch or framing or pixelation. The method above produces stunning quality video which is very fast and does not frame...
Try it for yourself...
I am starting to believe that HTC are aware of this but advertise the unit on the screen resolution thereby confusing users that they should encode their videos at this maximum resolution. This does not work but instead encoding them for the ipod/iphone screen resolution works with fluid video even in very fast scenes and clear loud audio which looks to me to be very in sync.

Hehe...if you believe so strongly, then I won't do anything to change your mind.
I've personally done a ton of 800x480 videos converted from HD videos, and they play great. But since you believe what you are doing is the only correct method, then don't change....self belief is very important. All I can say is that we've owned the HD2 much earlier, and have tested many ways to get video working the best way it can. However, if offering an alternative is wrong just because you feel your way is the only way, then I apologize.
However, if you're open to other possibilities, I would suggest doing a search on video encoding in the HD2 Themes and Apps subforum....you might be pleasantly surprised. I myself have posted rather often in several video encoding threads there, but I'm not so shameless to do any self promotion.

it's a tad complicated at first, i've attached a couple of profiles below if you wish to try, just unzip into the profiles folder on Winmenc.
One uses the baseline profile, this allows videos to show up in the HTC Album. The other doesn't, for videos you don't wish others to view easily.
Of course, the usual caveats come in, if you wish to get a high quality encoding, garbage in = garbage out, so decent HD media is a plus. So far I've not seen the need to go above 2000kbps for video. @Shawn_230, let's start over again.
First, that encoder you're using has a bitrate limitation, making even HD encodes no better than a tiptop dvd encode. The resolution is there, but the bitrate can't do the resolution justice. Also, it doesn't seem to do higher processor priority and multithreading, which would account for your sluggish encoding time.
I am in the process of uploading an avi dvdrip (that being the usual trend in dvdrips these days) and it's corresponding HD encode in mp4 format. Also, one very important reason for transcoding is that due to the myriad video codecs out there, there will be a time when you encounter a certain video that doesn't play on the HD2, regardless of the player used. That's when encoding will come in useful.

Besides the resolution, the details differences is rather apparent. Sorry, couldn't get exact frames, but there was no movement of the background during the short, only the stork was moving. Hope to change your mind somewhat.

It plays great on HD2....if it doesn't play fine on yours, then should be a problem on your end.

So, I have finally managed to rip one of my BD movies to my computer, and then converted it to .mp4 with Mp4ForHD.
The quality is extremely good, and 90% of the time, the picture is crystal clear, however i think that the HD2 is capable of playing movies with even higher bitrate than what Mp4ForHD can create. I don't know how to fix this myself, but untill someone does, we can only imagine how good the picture quality could be.
But I've captured some pics, for you to see, tell me what you think. Its from the movie Inglorious Bastards.

If you want a feeling of the video quality on your own device, download the pictures (Right click; Save As) and then copy them to your HD2. Then watch the images in the gallery, and see for yourself.

Not to take anything away from the OP but this isn't Blu-Ray on an HD2. It's transcoded video.
It's not different to ripping a DVD to DivX or something and playing it surely?
how big was the file before and after it was converted?
It's "blue ray" as a normal dvd doesn't have a resolution like this. A normal dvd has a resolution below this, therefore there is a difference whether you convert a "blue ray" or a dvd to 800x480. Did you get it?

Mp4forHD now has a higher allowed bitrate of 1600 kbps...this should allow for better quality video. However, imho, 1800-2000kbps is the sweet spot for HD converts...I do that for all my HD converts for HD2 and they play fine....only concern is not to hit more than 2gb per file.
Not sure if TS is converting videos to fit 800x480? I would advise to convert videos retaining aspect ratio, and if there is a need to view videos without the black bars, just press the fit to screen button.
Keeping with the theme, here's 2 shots I encoded of the IB HD sample. 16mb for 1min of video....that should be around 2hrs of video to stay within the 2gb limit.

Blue ray is 1080p , 720P is sufficient, BUt I get your point
I'm waiting for a 16gb microsd. In the meanwhile I'm encoding some of my 720p hdrip from mkv format to mp4 at the leo resolution (800 x 4xx). Whit the program I'm using I can select bitrate and size. So what is the maximum bitrate I can select? And what is the maximum file size the htc player can support?

I would recommend nothing more than 2000kbps for video. Max file size for video is 2gb.

I have been playing with the Camcorder on the EVO and I have some major gripes with 720p recording.
- Image quality is terrible. Either the sensor source is far less than 1280x720 and they are upscaling or the optics are crap and I can't tell the difference.
- I am unable to record 720p30 under ANY lighting conditions. In good light I get about 22 fps. In low light I get 10 fps!
- Even worse, the FR fluctuates during record. This leads to motion that's more choppy than chop suey. Imagine a clip where one frame is held for 60 ms, and the next for 100 ms, the next for 50 ms. EVO encodes sequences like this routinely.
I expected decent quality 720p30 from the EVO and what I got is something unusable. Why haven't any reviewers mentioned this yet?
Other than this I'm extremely satisfied with the camera. I just feel RIPPED OFF though because they are selling this camera as "HD" and it seems like "HD" is a tacked-on in-name-only feature.
well, it does have 720P output. so i dont think HD was just tacked on.

I totally disagree with that comment. I took this picture today, with default settings - inside of my car. So, that's the windshield reflection you see in the top right. But still, the quality is deafening.

I agree, I'm amazed at the still camera quality.. some examples:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/ -- the detail in the clouds, and some of the pics from Muir Woods are just incredible (from a phone, no less!). And the adjustable focal length makes for some nice effects (see "fallen tree")
I haven't had a chance to really try out video yet. Though one of my coworkers noticed that while we were driving on the golden gate bridge and he took a picture out the window, the bars -- supposed to be vertical -- appear in the photos at about a 30* angle... So it is clearly reading from the sensor in a left-right/top-down order and not taking an instant snapshot of the light that's hitting the sensor at the time. But the fact that it actually caught detail of those bars, rather than just appearing as an unrecognizable blur, is impressive.
the picture posted to me look awesome. do you think with froyo, the camcorder issues, if any, would be resolved???

I am not a pro at cameras\ camcorders but my evo records and plays fine.
The "vertical bars become slanted" phenomenon is called rolling shutter, Google it and you will find a good explanation (I can't post the link 'cause I'm a new user).
It's bad enough when your sensor FR is 30 fps, but the more you get below 30 (ex. the slower you read out) the worse the problem gets.
Still quality is just fine. The major problem with video is that 720p30 is unachievable.
Sorry, but for an 8mp camera, those pics are lousy. Maybe you guys are just used to HTC's previous cameras? I'm sure this is a step up, but they are still pretty bad. At the moment, this appears to be the best camera in an Android phone (that I'm aware of) but that isn't saying much.
Lets see some macro shots to get a better idea of the sensor's ability.
Yeah kind of a bummer, I remember video recording looking great on the Droid's screen but much less so on a pc perhaps in part due to the much higher pixel density on the 3.7" screen (~265 ppi) or ~217 ppi for EVO.
I've heard rumors the next iPhone will have a 5x optical zoom (not digital distortion) & rather not have them win bragging rights over the EVO..

My EVO takes great pictures. Sometimes some blur in completely dark environments because it can't see to focus before the flash pops. As it is with any camera operating in a totally dark environment.
To the guy who said it is crappy quality for an 8MP camera...ummm...it's not the quality of the optics that suck here. Colors are saturated properly, everything is good. What you are complaining about is the jpg compression. Which is a software issue.
Maybe it will change. Maybe it won't. Personally there is not a better phone camera on the market. If so I'd like to see some shots posted.
As for the video. Yes. If it's not properly lit, it's pretty pixelated in my opinion. In bright daylight I think it is truly amazing this video is being produced on my phone.

In this version ( Vodafone AUS ) we can see it have S-LCD screen , and i think the new OTA FW have 720p update ( i hope so )

Assuming that ad copy is accurate.
And also assuming that this Euro version is the same hardware as the US version (which it clearly isn't since it's SLCD and not SAMOLED - who knows what other internal changes it might have).
We've been led to believe in the past that the lack of 720p video recording was a hardware bandwidth limitation...no software will change that if it's true. We could do 720p if/when some gets around to hacking in a method, but it will be at reduced framerates. I suspect a lower resolution at higher framerates will usually be a more pleasant viewing experience.
The i9023 (as opposed to the US i9020) has a Super LCD screen instead of a SuperAMOLED one but I suppose as part of the screen swap, it can capture true 720p video.
That would be the most bull**** thing Samsung haf done yet.

Before everyone jumps to conclusions, keep in mind that the original launch page for the Nexus S (http://www.google.com/nexus) said it would be able to take "HD videos" on the Features page while stating only 720x480 on the Specs page. As we all know, 720x480 is "Enhanced Definition" at best, not HD.
So this could be a similar situation. Or, it might have a different camera module that has the on-board video processing chip.
Personally, I think the 720x480 video the original NS takes are actually pretty decent, and I'd much prefer the battery life improvements of an AMOLED screen over SuperLCD.
I also think the video is quite good already, but higher res wouldn't hurt. But the still camera needs some work, my NS is not nearly as good a my old vibrant.

these make sense, i never thought of it that way, i always knew that the GS phones had more codecs than the NS because of touchwiz and such but i never related those codecs and HD recording :O
The problem is, if its a codec issue then how do you get it onto the sns if its a matter of Google not paying for it? I don't see how anyone can fix that. How do you even get codecs on this phone? Sounds like there's no legal way to do it right?

Read under encoding, and you realize by yourselves that H.264 encoding it's not supported on android 2.3.3 and before. First version of android with H.264 encoding is Honeycomb (3.0).
So it's definitely a codec thing.
Considering one of the lead Android devs said on his twitter that 720p recording is not available on the Nexus S due to hardware bandwidth limitation, I tend to believe him. I am not sure why we have ANOTHER 720p thread either. There is already a longggg one open that talks about all of this. The ad is incorrect. The SLCD version is the SAME as the AMOLED version, minus the screen.
I think it takes great pics and decent video but you kind of expect HD coming from a phone like this... NFC could have waited for the next google phone IMO.

However the one thing that sucks is that when we are in a car she doesn't have access to videos that come with Kindle Free Time. I only have a 16gb Kindle and want to be able to put a few videos onto the Kindle so she can have something to watch in the car.
Most of my movies are 4-6gb 720p MKV rips. I want to re encode to mp4 and have smaller file sizes so I can fit more movies onto the Kindle. I am using Handbrake to do this but was wondering what would be the best settings to hopefully get the file sizes around 700mb and still have at least DVD quality. I assume the streaming videos that I see like Blues Clues and Sesame Street on Kindle Free Time must be about DVD quality.

Use Any Video Converter or Xilsoft Video Converter to convert files in your pc.

The best app to use that I found is Handbrake. I was using Any Video Converter before but, could only fit like 3-4 videos on the KF at a time and then my brother told me about Handbrake. It converts the videos quickly and has presets that make it very simple. It also makes them very small so you can fit many more on the device at once.
HandBrake is a tool for converting video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codecs. It is Free and Open Source. Multi-Platform (Windows, Mac and Linux)

For kids movies I use ipod preset. Bad quality, but enough for them and I prefer lower size. If you prefer quality, try high profile. Try first both profiles in a short video and choose.

Hi. I've been eager to buy this phone but there is a feature I would like to confirm first, and is the HW video codecs support, specifically for 10-bit HEVC (x265/h265).
The best way to confirm it is installing the MX Player app, then going into Local Player Settings > Decoder > HW+ video codecs and see if it is checked in the list and says "Hardware accelerated".
The window in the app looks like this, from my current phone. As you can see, it lacks 10 bit h265.

Hi, I have the global version of POCO M3 (QJFMIXM), I just checked with MX Player and AIDA64, and it doesn't support H.265 10bits, please read the screenshots I attached.

Hello if you don't mind I would like to ask you a question. I am also considering to buy this phone. Im not a gamer but I do watch a lot tv series on my phone. My current phone (Pixel 2) support HW video codecs 10-bit HEVC. But since this device does not support that, does that mean
1. will it consume more battery when playing x265 10bit videos on this device?
2. will there any video playback issues related to smooth playback?

Hi!
1. Yes it will consume more battery since it has to decode the video in software, thus using CPU power.
2. Probably yes as well. I got a Redmi Note 8 because it was on sale and it has native support for 10-bit HEVC. But if I run a video with that codec on software mode, cpu usage goes up a lot, the phone gets warm and playback is not smooth a lot of the time. 10-bit HEVC is pretty resource intensive.
I was on the same boat as you since I also watch a lot of media on my phone and some of these come with this format. So it was a deal breaker even though I liked everything else about the Poco M3.

Thanks a lot for the response mate, that's really helpful. Initially I was going for Poco X3, however due to my budget issues I was considering M3. But after I got to know this, it is kind of a deal breaker to me as well. Thanks again!
