yea i have 1 1.5 just in case
rest are 2.1 of various settings and dev's
Atm I have 2, my back up rom, and a version of my main rom that I haven't themed yet, just in case.
But I had 15 before I deiced to clean it up a little bit yesterday (I just got a bigger sdcard and that was right when OC came out, so I was a little bit flash happy lol)
I have two backups on sd card, couple on my hard drive. I'm running gumbo 1.5c, but when i was playing with 2.1 roms, I always had a gumbo backup.
None. Backups are fo' suckas.
I have 0 backups.
I am horrible about getting to excited and flashing before I backup.

I dont get excited to flash, I just dont care enough to backup. Its just as easy for me to make an update flashable .zip with more tweaks I come up with...
I have 2.
Fresh1.5 and Fresh2.0d from my last theme update. Since then I'm happy with the ROM, Theme and performance.
i don't back up either. mainly because i'm not sure how to use nandroid!
3 backups:
pancake 1.5
my fixxxedrom without sense
a stock image
i just realized that astro can backup applications! that's the only thing i would want backed up. cool.
One for emergencies. The rest are on my computer for safe keeping.
I have 3!
I had about 12 of them until yesterday. Now I have three.
0
10chars
On my SD I always have one, on my computer I have about 9
I dont keep more than 5 or 6 at the most
in the last 5 months i've probably deleted 30 or more, lol
i only keep 2. my stock backup from my original root (also safely tucked away on my pc :]) and the last nandroid i did before making any major edits (i.e. flashing a new rom, any flashing at all in fact)
quick/dumb question. i did a nandroid backup. what does a restore do? if i flash to a new rom & restore a nandroid, will that work? does it restore my apps/contacts/settings/etc? or does it restore to the previous rom that nandroid backed up?

Does the nandroid only back up the software and settings -
If i just download the rom from HTC then that will put it back to the latest official rom wont it..
i was under the impression that a Original hero was only 1 rom away?
You don't need a nandroid backup at all. I use it all the time though.
You just asked a question that Dan330 had already answered in his previous post... yes it backs up basically everything. There are a few things that it doesn't back up but they aren't too significant (They are left out to prevent further problems).
If you downloaded a rom from HTC well, Duh. Of course it will put it back to the official rom. If it's rootable, then you can just restore a nandroid backup if you wanna go back to what you had before. Hopefully the HTC rom doesn't prevent you from rooting otherwise you won't be able to.
What the heck do you mean Original Hero was 1 rom away? Huh?
HTC Rom image will restore the rom.
A 'normal' data backup will store the data, ie drag from the SD card.
You can reinstall any marketplace apps from the marketplace.
The Google cloud will store calendar, contacts, mail, etc.
For the average user, nandroid is not necessary. But I understand the usefulness to a rom cooking enthusiast and the speed of a single backup. All the averages do not need to worry about nandroid though.
thank you cbailey
and sorry KAwAtA i was rushing to work - and talking crap at the same time...
I never even thought that HTC would try and stop you from rooting the phone....
just always thought that having a unbranded HTC ment i can install any rom at any time, and still install the latest HTC Rom if i wanted.
Very New to Rooting. so i need a few weeks to catch up.
Nandroid takes like a "photo" of your phone at the exact time you did it and will rstore everything exactly like it was at that time, e.g. rom, data, apps EVERYTHING.
you should always do one before flashing or removing anything on your phone that you should not "officially" be doing as that way if something goes wrong you can easily get back to your working rom.

if your looking to change roms then you need to use another app to backup your data and apps.

best advice I can give is read the how to WIKI's BEFORE doing anything else. ALWAYS read the first post of any rom that you want to try then re-read it just to make sure you understand if there are any problems and or fixes. also ALWAYS make a nandroid BEFORE you change anything with your phone. after all that just watch the boards and check out all the cool stuff.
edit: and I forgot the search button is in the upper right of the screen and will save you a lot of grief from the flamers
Thanks dood.
I just rooted mine, too and all I can say is read read read read. Try different things you're cmfortable with, and just enjoy how much better it is rooted.

Do you nandroid after changing anything? I did it as soon as I got root last night, but now I have loaded a custom rom and am thinking about adding mods and themes... should I nandroid every time I put a new rom on or is the very first nandroid sufficient?

Did you use fresh kitchen? I would make sure your recovery console is 1.6.2 as you can pick which nandroid you want to restore. Just nandroid before flashing a ROM or a Theme, so you can revert back to what you had before if something is not working.
The first nandroid you have should be the one with the stock ROM+root. I would take this and save it on your computer so you always have it.
I'd say that you should make a backup copy every time you change anything significant, or anything you do while booting in recovery.
Its probably not necessary to do it as often as I do, but I figure a few extra minutes of waiting for it to finish is worth not having the frustration of not being able to revert to a past state if something screwy happens.

I used the 'static wiki page how-to' for getting everything done, I think they supplied a link to this one: recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img, which I guess is outdated... I'll look for the 1.6.2 version instead. You are correct, my first nandroid is the stock + root and I did save this to my computer, but I haven't nandroided since then because I didn't think I needed to. I think I will nandroid again now that I am on 2.1 ROM and then nandroid whenever I mess around with the recovery / new ROMS. Thanks guys.
For the 1.6.2, do I just repeat the sticky how-to for installing this recovery? I don't want to mess anything up since I already have the 1.5.2 recovery installed. Will it just overwrite?
I have a T-Mo G2 and want to keep my Froyo image to reinstall later if I cannot get theGingerbread to work right. I want to make an image file that will restore the phone to exactly how it is now. I have tried all kinds of stuff, but am not able to make the "img" file so that I ca do a restore when booting...
Can someone point me to what I need to install to do this, and if possible some directions on what/how to create the "img" or restore file ?
I would be most appreciative, as I had to reverse everything from the OTA of Gingerbread, since too many apps didn't work, ESPECIALLY the GPS!
My current Froyo is a temp-root system.
Thank you all!
Aloha. .
I would do full root via the wiki, and then install 4EXT (the full one that's like $2) - it will keep your old stuff straight
Ditto on previous reply
Root your G2
Backup all your apps with using Titanium backup
Get Clockwork mod ROM manger or 4ext ( I prefer 4ext) and backup your stock rom. You can download new ROM CM7 for first ROM.
If you don't like the ROM you can restore your stock ROM with CWM or 4ext at anytime.
I have a theory that Ti Backup or any backing up of apps is a bad plan. I know you can do it no problem, and that it is a great time saver, but I have a strong feeling that this ultimately results in an unstable phone with mysterious force closes etc.
Even though it's a real pain, I think you are always better off reinstalling your apps from scratch after changing to a new ROM and wiping caches.

1. I have had zero problems with TB personally.
2. Without it your app data is gone.
3. Triple wipe, takes a few extra minutes and makes a world of a difference.
4. Do not restore system data!
5. Check md5 sums BEFORE doing anything!!!!
6. Make sure you have a recent nandroid backup and you'll be fine either way.
7. triple wipe before flashing anything including nandroids. Preferably with different wipes aka factory reset, superwipe+ ext4, then recovery wipe!
Just my 2 cents, it's saved my a$$ more then a few times...
I have a question that I have not been able to find out the answer to. Right now my N4 is running stock rooted 4.2.2 with Harsh's kernel, and I was thinking about going to Carbon ROM. If for whatever reason, I need to go back to my stock rooted 4.2.2, can I do that with using TWRP's Nandroid backup?
Is it ok to back and forth between kernel versions and Android versions like that?
Will my apps, and data (like text messages) be contained in that 4.2.2. Nandroid backup?
Text will not be contained within the backup but you should be able to find an app that does it, to back up apps select data when backing up, I would recommend when restoring back to re flash the kernal and finally I will recommend you to keep a nandroid backup on your PC or usb
Sent from my N⁴ using Android Lollipop by @Sykopompus running Unleased kernel by @DeFcOni
A Nandroid backup will be exactly as your phone was when you made the backup. Texts will be saved, but anything after the backup won't be saved if you revert. Texts can be backed up with other methods though. Restoring/backing up with TWRP couldn't be easier. Some days I do it several times when trying out different ROMs/builds/kernels/etc. Just don't delete your "external" storage, and it never hurts to copy your backups to a computer.
Carbon is an excellent ROM. Great choice. Personally I prefer LiquidSmooth, but Carbon was one of the few that made it to my shortlist of final choices. I've thought about trying Carbon again, if only just for a change. Everybody has their preferences, but you won't go wrong with Carbon, I assure you.
I do have to wonder WTF you're doing stuck on 4.2.2 though. That **** is ancient. If you don't stick with Carbon, you should at least go back to stock, but with 4.4.4 Kit Kat.
Yes of course

Thanks everyone! I was hoping it would make a point-in-time copy for me, just so I could hop back if I needed to. I kinda got myself stuck at 4.2.2 because of TWRP (couldn't OTA the updates) and and Harsh's kernel (it fixed the couple of things that I wanted to change). Everything was running so well on it, I never really cared to update it. I get great battery life, and it's quick enough. But now I just have the urge to tinker. I'll also try out LiquidSmooth, thanks for the suggestion!
Hi- am wondering if anyone out there can help me and might be able to tell me what went wrong? I downloaded the Alliance rom 2, after flashing it I ran into all kinds of problems with processes but I am not sure it is something that I did or didn't do. After downloading, I created a nandroid backup then a factory wipe, then a wiped cache and dalvik again, flashed the rom, stayed in recovery, selected restore, selected the nandroid backup that I made, unchecked all but data, flashed the data waited then rebooted. The phone basically would not fully reboot- it is stopped by process errors but i was able to actually get to settings and scroll to application manager. Going through 'all', I read go to phone and wipe cache and data if that dosent work but neither did work. I also find that safestrap is nowhere to be found and if I choose reboot to recovery in power button menu, it takes me to the stock recovery or the bootloader- from there I tried to wipe cache but no luck. I was on Biggins latest 9.5 I think it was and NC4. I put a 32 gb chip in the pnone but not even a 10th is used and the theres less than a gb left in the phone side. The following process errors are whats coming up-
Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stoppped,
Unfortunately, Unified Daemon(EUR) has stopped
commonimservice isn't responding. Do you want to close it?- cancel, ok
Unfortunately, TouchWiz home has stopped.- ok
I hooked the phone up to the computer and successfully found the nandroid backup that I made and copied ut from the phone to a new folder. Can you tell me what your best recommendation would be to fix this so I can restore this nandroud back up an possibly remove most of the internal storage of the phone since all I need is the nandroid back- I have one or 2 other nans I can delete. Should I use Odin to restore the nandroid backup? I'm just not toally sure how to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated- thanks,
TJ

I'm assuming that you have a Retail Verizon Note 3, and not the Developer's Edition.
You should only try to restore the Nandroid backup with the Custom Recovery that you had used to create it. If you were on 4.4.2 NC4 before things got messed up, then you would restore the Nandroid (Safestrap TWRP backup) through Safestrap after you get the phone restored to stock and rooted/set up again.
Droidstyle has put together a really helpful stock restore guide here: ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46461911 ).
Carefully follow the Restore to Stock instructions in Section 1 of his guide, and use Odin to flash the phone back to the "Official VRUCNC4 4.4.2." After you Odin flash the stock Firmware, make sure to boot into stock recovery and do a factory reset /wipe cache. (Odin doesn't wipe everything, so you'll need to do that to ensure you're starting fresh).
After you're restored to stock 4.4.2 NC4... then use Towelroot again to root, then install busybox, and finally install Safestrap v. 3.75. You should be able to restore your Safestrap backup after doing all that. (If you are going to restore a previous backup of Stock 4.4.2 NC4... then that should work fine).
(Don't forget that since you were on 4.4.2 NC4, you will have to Odin the Unified Kit Kat Firmware that's linked in the Biggins Rom v.9.5 thread's installation instructions (Step 7) if you're restoring a Biggins Nandroid backup). So if you are going to restore a backup of a previous Biggins v9.5 Rom... then I would probably just follow the Biggins Rom "Coming From NC4 OTA" Install instructions again and reinstall Biggins Rom, then factory reset in Safestrap and restore your Biggins backup.
Hope this helps you to get it fixed.
Hi thanks for that great bit of information. I have gotten to restoring my phone back to stock with Odin and now have almost 22.5 Gbs. vs less than 1 Gb before on the phone stotage. That must have been the slight lag. I used TowelRoot to root, installed SupersuPro, Busybox, Titanium Backup and Root Checker. My next step was installing Safestrap since I am NC4, I looked for the 3.75 but it said NC2 but I do recall the 804 version was for both. My next step would be install the rom. I had wanted to check out Alliance vs the Biggins rom I'v been on. I read this thread on installing a new rom in 10 minutes and restoring all data as if you you dont skip a beat. This has worked for me before before Biggins and also 3 other galaxy note 10" tablets I have so I'm perplexed as to why I got the 4 different "Unfortunately, such and such has stopped"… oThis is the guide I followed-
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766443
Would you not recommend this. I figured on installing the Alliance rom but would like to use this guide to restore my data
so I have my phone set up just like it was without running into the errors again. What would you be your best suggestion for getting my data restored so that I don't have to go through the painstaking task of customizing it again. If I have to stick with the Biggins ron then no big deal. My only other concern would be that if I restore that nandroud backup thus installing the rom, will I have all the crap that was filling up the phones storage to begin with? Or should I start a new flash of Biggins? If I did that then I would have to figure out how to pluck only the data from the nandroid back I have on my pc.
Thanks again for getting me out of that moss,
TJ

I would not recommend trying to flash data from your Biggins backup over to Alliance. Alliance and Biggins are both stock based , but Alliance has had so many mods done to it, that I wouldn't think importing the data over would have good results. If you want to flash Alliance, I would follow their install instructions which says to wipe first ... and then maybe try to import data from each app individually if you really have to have that backed up data on the new ROM. If you made any backups in Titanium Backup Pro, you could try to import data from apps individually to see if that would work.
Tonight when I get in I am going to try your suggestion of wipe, import data by app although I have never done it- would I gather the saved data from the app from the nandroid on my pc before putting on my sd card and back on the phone or TB Pro will have a method? I've nevr seen apps in recovery and I'm sure you can tell how rediculously unsavvy I am on this androud thing. Is this your daily driver and if so what rom do you use? I saw the JasmineRom v5.1 sportibg the multisystem (not exactly surenwhat that is) but I looks to be lollipop- if I went to that rom, I am guessing I would have to reinstall stock firmware again before getting back into a KK rom- I've done that on a tablet and was able to flash from a 5.1.1 rom right back to a 4.4.2 rom without issue but I gather phones are different?
Hey thanks again I appreciate it,

I was thinking that you had previously used Titanium Backup Pro to backup your apps prior to trying to switch roms. If that is the case, then you can just use Titanium Backup to restore app data for whichever individual apps you feel you need to restore.
If you didn't use Titanium Backup, and you only made a Safestrap/TWRP backup of the Biggins ROM... then I believe it will be more complicated with trying to import the data from individual apps if you're wanting to run Alliance ROM and import that old app data. There are tools and ways to do this, but I'm not really knowledgeable enough about them to help. You can google search and look for some of the tools if you're desperate to try to get the old data imported to a new ROM. I did a Google search and found an app called Nandroid Manager that might work for you.
Personally, I prefer to start fresh after flashing a new ROM, and set things up from scratch. I usually then run the ROM for a few days to make sure it's working like I like... then make a backup of the ROM to have if I need to restore it from messing something up.
I am currently running biggins ROM v. 9.5 on Safestrap 3.75/ stock ROM slot. It is extremely stable, everything works, and I get great battery life. I'm not really one to flash a lot of ROM's once I find one that I really like. I also have a few other Android devices that I tinker with, so I think that keeps me from wanting to constantly change the ROM on the Note 3.
As far as trying out the Jasmine Lollipop--- I would strongly advise you read and fully understand everything before you consider flashing it. Once you upgrade to the Lollipop ROM, you won't be able to revert back to KitKat and if you mess up something with the flashing process, then you will only be able to restore the phone to stock lollipop and will lose root. Since there's no current method root Lollipop, then you may be stuck without root for a while if not forever..
Hmm that nandroid manager looks like a must have. I am just going to just check out the Alliance then go back to Biggins. This way I can restore the nandroid I had but I am definitely getting TB Pro and the Nan mngr then I can see if it works with the nandroid backup I'll put back on my sd card. Did you ever check Alliance? It sounds like its loaded with too much stuff. I definitely wont be flashing the Jasmine rom- I had a feeling something was up with flashing a upgraded os on the phone vs tablet. Everything I own is Samsung- like 4 tv's, 2 Series 7 (win7) Chronos i5 & i7 notebooks, 3 10" Galaxy Note tablets not to mention the 11.6" XE700 win 7 tablet I haven't used much- not that easy to set up- did you ever see the ATIV Q? It was a convertible dual boot windows android tablet notebook- that would have been ideal but not with win 8- if I could get full android on the windows tablet- I wouldn't need anything else besides the phone- I'm told it can be done from one of the tech's at the Samsung solid state hard drive dept.
Again, much appreciated advive and info-

Your idea to restore your Biggins Nandroid backup, then use Titanium Backup Pro to backup the apps and data--- that is a good idea. You could go to the preferences section in Titanium Backup and set it to back up your apps and data to your external SD card. Once you have that backed up, you could then put on the Alliance ROM and restore individual apps and data as you please. I believe that it's usually recommended that when you restore apps and data with Titanium Backup, that you don't restore system data. You could try to restore 1 app at a time and test things out to see if you get any strange results.
I tried out Alliance on my Note 2, but haven't gotten around to trying out Alliance on my Note 3 yet. I've had such a good user experience with Biggins... and it has pretty much all the tweaks I want.... so I really haven't had a desire to try out Alliance.
I haven't heard of the ATIV Q, but it sounds pretty cool. Good luck man!
The ATIV Q got shelved I guess due to patent issues between windows and android-
Anyway ya back on Biggins- The Alliance rom had way too much goin on for me- I'll definately go the TB Pro route and follow that from now on. So glad to be back on Biggins without the phone being used up. I dont know if you experienced this but on the Biggins for some reason the NC4 modem kinda sucks. I have all 5 modems on my notebook- you may want to switch yours with up (Odin)-I thinks its the mje, nc4 & nc2 that seem to suck- the other 2 the mi9 & mj7 are the ones that are good. I Also forgot about the missing visual voicemail, I had to hit up Deuce for the file last year which I forgot to save but he since he put it in the downloads- I had one hell of a time getting it to work without error (you can't have wifi on). Do you use the xposed thing? Im not really sure what it is. Not sure if you also know this but if you go into settings, dev opts, and under 'drawing' and set window animation, transition animation and animation duration to .25 or off, it speeds up the phone and touch response. I read that on some root site and I think our phones are or were 1.5 on those scales.
I wonder if DB is going to work on or has worked on the note 4- the 4 from what I saw had just a few alterations in features, slightly boosted cpu, the image atabilation on the camera (a must), enhancements to the S Note- this is a huge tool for me especially since they have it for windows- I guess mac too.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see what tricks the upcoming note 5 will have.
Thanks again bro for your help,
TJ
