i know its specifications but some say 256 and other say 345 ,some say digital compass ,other say not , i want to ask who has the device and tested it

Oh, well, did you check SE website???
Anyway, 1.6 android will only "see" 256Mb or ram, the rest up to 384 will be av ailable with android 2.1.
It has a compass.
No FM radio (but i have MW600 so, i don't care)
Anyway, it "might" have FM radio if is using one of those system on chip but for sure now is not enabled even if it has one. If you check the images from the "Upskirt Shots inside" thread and identify the chip, you can search on internet and find out

thanks allot

Compass App

I have been looking for a compass app for ages, is there any decent ones out there?
geee, when HTC actually put a magnetic compass sensor in a phone, there might be an app to support it...
Shouldn't really be a problem for a nifty developer if based on the same principle as a waterlevel with the G-Sensor. Just need to calibrate it yourself to, say North, by using another compass or GPS and voila.

Ahhhh... I thing the G sensor works on the vertical plane not the horizontal plane that would be required.
I use GPSTuner as compass and I think it is a satisfying solution don't you?
Obviously it is far from being a fast and smooth compass as it is an Iphone 3GS but whatever (fortunately, I don't really like exploding screens xD). You can also buy a real compass...

WMMiniGPS will do the trick for you.
There are a few others that will use the GPS to show your heading. You can find them here.
A GPS tool will show you the (correct) North only if you are moving.
Only if our device would have a magnetic sensor inside, we could have a software repeater on the screen. Otherwise all we can have is a fake. Unfortunately... A pseudo-compass.
all the best!
Thanks guys! I'll check out those apps, but it looks like I won't be throwing my SILVA compass away just yet!

Yes, Yes. GPS will give you course (derived), not heading (It doesn't know which way you are facing, just which way you are going).
the omnia 2 has a compass and a compass app. maybe you can pull it off of that. why go through the effort of putting the compass hardware in the device if you dont give apps to support it? maybe google will make the next version of maps capable like the iphone and android.

Indeed. Fortunately, HTC did *NOT* put compass hardware in the TP2, and therefore, did not waste any effort.
Phew. Such a relief, isn't it?
oh cool. ^5 for low standards in hardware!
i use igo8 nav software for my compass..a standalone compass would i guess be useful...but our phones have gps built in..so ur gonnna need gps software which in turn have compasses..i didnt like tomtom7's compass but igo8 on the other hand has a very solid compass, and amazing 3D maps so...
Great Compass App!
"Where is" has a great compass in it. You have to be moving for the gps to pick up your speed and then the compass works, but even just walking is enough speed. Compass is very accurate too and great looking compass too...http://simosoftprojects.com

Xperia X1 running Windows Mobile 7.

Hehe
It gives us a sense of false hope.
Man, i would love to see 7 finalized! itll prolly look too sexy for today's phones to handle
Wow? Frankly speaking, any possibilty that the video is trying to tell us SEX1 is able to run WM7?
Like maybe make a special version of WM7 for those phones without accelerometer?
Well the screen are most probably added in post-processing .. it is a professional advertisement. A lot easier than to install WM7 on device clearly under specs, and then shoot the display so it looks good.
They just take current devices to show in this video
The X1 is off: there is no lights in the hardware keyboard when in use...
hope is such a wonderfull thing ^^
Kinda like the original X1 advertisements. No way the R1 stock ROMs were as fast as those shown on the videos.

I don't really think WM7 will be too advanced for the X1, but please don't expect an OEM upgrade.
Minimum specs for WM7 contains 1GHz CPU, g-meter and compass (IIRC). Xperia is clearly not WM7 compatible.

to Dr sid :
Really ??? that doesnt seem to make much sense ... i mean why should be the accelerometer a dependence or even more the digital compass ... they are almost useless features. one for auto rotation and the other for navigation.
about the speed ... hmm im not sure that MHz make incompatibility ... maybe the ram size can be a problem but the Mhz ... a pc can work slower or faster ... but it works in most cases, it seems extreme to go just from wm 6.5 to wm 7 ... and require double processor speed. this has never happened in any wm upgrade ... there are so many old devices running fine with wm 6.5 ... kaiser for example which has even resoultion 320x240 and came out with wm 5... so to me Xperia will be able to run wm 7 ... and i have to agree anyway that the Xperia in the adertisment is tottally turned off ....
a phone with a 1ghz processor!?
I will buy a new phone when they come out with dual core for it
Look, it doesn't matter if its going to require an accelerometer or a compass... while it'll be nice to have, there's a 99% chance that it'll get ported over for WM6.0-6.5 devices, maybe with one or two features missing. Touchflo was never supposed to run on the kaiser, let alone titanium... that phone is a great example of 3 generations of windows mobile upgrades... our devices won't be any different. I'm planning on my topaz and raphael to be running WM7 when the big day comes

Xperia Rachel Music UI Demo

Looking Awesome
http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/31/new-sony-ericsson-rachael-ui-video-hits-still-looks-nothing-lik/
Seriously... this is exactly something which Android needs... It looks beautiful and it will appeal to not only the "Mobile Geek" market but the average standard market too... it purely being a Sony Ericsson will help it alot aswell.
I wonder if HTC will have any involvement in the Xperia X3 as they did with the X1 meaning that XDADevs will have a forum for it?
EDIT: For anyone who doesn't know, the "leaked" specs on this device are:
256mb RAM
512MB Rom
1ghz Snapdragon Processor
4 inch touchscreen
Micro SD Port
8mp camera
0.3mp secondary camera (video calling)
My question is why haven't we gotten a Music app like this yet? It's absolutely killing Android right now. I've tried almost all of them to no avail. We shouldn't need a whole new UI for a good music app.

GPS Polling Rate?

Right now it is at 1hz, which is way to slow for a couple applications I use. Is there any way to raise it to 5hz or higher?
This has nothing to do with Android Development. Please post in correct section.

General...
I'm going to have to agree that this is most directly related to android development. Definitely more relevant to development than general.
Second that agreement. Development question for sure.

That's what I was thinking since you would be modifying part of the android OS...
Anyways. I heard it was possible to do, I just have no clue how. I'm sure a lot of people would like it if someone wrote an app that could change the gps polling rate.

I know the default is 1Hz from the app I downloaded that tell you the gps polling rate. External bluetooth GPS receivers are 5hz and up, but the incredible doesn't support bluetooth GPS.
Taking a look at the SDK which is what someone would be using to access the GPS via a program, it appears you can set the minTime in milliseconds. But there is a warning that says:
Background services should be careful about setting a sufficiently high minTime so that the device doesn't consume too much power by keeping the GPS or wireless radios on all the time. In particular, values under 60000ms are not recommended.
Click to collapse
However, that doesn't mean the GPS itself is polling that fast, that is how fast you are asking for what the GPS currently has. There does not appear to be a way to change the GPS polling itself.
I'm guessing this is set by the hardware and not changeable and is set by the mfg of the device. Most likely not nearly as customizable as some GPS units you can access via bluetooth or USB device.
Power is a big limiting factor.
Someone with some actual development experience might be able to provide more info on this...
Well, If it can't be changed onboard, then maybe something to make the incredible work with bluetooth GPS devices?
Pure GPS can only give you a new location once a second. To get faster updates than that you need to blend the solution with something like an Inertial Navigation System.

Yeah, what he said. Besides, if the GPS rate is good enough for the Speedo programs on the market, how could 1hz not be fast enough
I'm pretty sure GPS can sample much more than once per second. I have a pretty expensive Trimble unit at school for an autonomous bot and it allows for up to 20Hz sampling in standalone mode.
bumpity bump.

2.1 over 1.6 benefits

Maybe I'm missing something but I've been reading change logs for Android 2.1 vs 1.6 and I don't really see what the big deal is.
Aside from someone posting that the battery life was a "zillion times better" I don't see anything that is going to improve my phone. Most of what's offered in 2.1 I've already gotten via 3rd party apps for 1.6.
Glad to hear about the "zillion times better" though, throwing out all of my chargers now Assuming most of us would place the fictitious "zillion" somewhere near a trilllion that would mean the battery should last 2.73790926 × 10^9 years. I'll probably change phones before charging again.
Seriously though, what does 2.1 really bring that the market apps don't?
more apps are supporting 2.0/2.1 and above only

Anyways, for me, the main thing would be more apps would be compatible with the phone! I've been dieing to try LauncherPro!
Another thing that was promised with the update was 720p Recording, and Live Wallpapers (which is also something else that i am excited for)!
Plus
- Full range of colors: 1.6 only has 65000 colors (16-bit), you can see the banding very visible in pictures and movies. With 2.1 we get full 16 million colors.
- Improved BT stack: with 2.1 we will be able to see contact and song names in the displays of our bundled MW600 headsets
Hopefully they've also finally addressed the low in-call volume issue.

The offical twitter app isn't that good to me. I have tried and last I had it it would always load at the top of the list. Boo third party apps like seesmic and twitdeck have had this fuction for months. I do want to see the display difference in 2.1

AS to the colors I'm not really that excited but I don't really use the X10 for video. If you're a mobile video watcher then I can see why the video enhancement would be something to look forward to.
BT stack improvements would be welcomed but until I can BT voice dial I still won't be thrilled.
Funny thing about that in-call volume. When I use Google Voice the in-call volume is much much better ... no idea why.

BTW you know what's better than Twitter? Google Buzz.
That way, I can not only be inundated by useless thoughts I can also know exactly where they had the useless thought ... sweet.
So far:
Improved colors = useful for some to be sure.
720p video recording = I may use it from time to time.
Newer apps = Depends on what they do but I'm pretty happy with my 100 apps.
Improved BT stack = Yup but still want BT voice dial.
Better battery = Hard to really say unless someone with an X10 is running 2.1
Speed = Pretty fast already.
Twitter = No thanks.
Facebook = No thanks.
Social networking in general = No thanks (I actual reality network
My point wasn't to insult those waiting for 2.1 it was an honest question, "Am I missing something?". The improvements listed, for me, won't get me to upgrade.

Are you really sure there is going to be a great battery improvement? Until 2.1 is running on the X10 you won't know for certain.
I do know that my extended battery has reallly worked out for me. I use the phone for all it's worth (except twitter) and I can go 14 hours and still have 60% remaining.
