Leo Video Performance

Hi there,
A couple of questions from a HD owner about the Leo.
Can anyone comment on the video performance on the phone if you drop a non converted avi file/movie. HD used to stutter and get out of synch... Can you use VLC or CorePlayer with any file? Is it smooth?
Also anyone notice lag in the interface?
Love the phone, but I want it to run ABSOLUTELY smoothly... While the HD is fantastic, it's still get frustrating to use at time.

Lots of people have already commented on it. There are threads for those questions, give them a read.

What a waste of a response... It feels like the assumption on this forum is that everyone has time to go and read EVERYTHING and/or that search engines are so developed, brain usage should become irrelevant...

Depends on the size and bitrate of the avi file, as well as the background programs running. I tried running a 848x480 882kbps(video) avi file and sometimes it stutters every minute or so, sometimes it just runs smoothly. Let's just say that... it's perfectly watchable. Not any moments where I can see the video being tremendously out of sync with the audio. Also tried a 704x400 826kbps(video) XviD file as well... and that runs fine.
I was using CorePlayer.
I don't have any HD avi files, but trying to play HD mkv files fail. (just manages to play 400px-height mkv files)

Using Coreplayer, video's have screen tearing when using directdraw but the performance of playback is good.
What I did was switch to GDI, no more screen tearing but the benchmark score is lower than directdraw. Also changed the smooth zoom to always be on and not only at 50%. This help reduce pixellation.
A standard tv episode avi file (624x352, 350MB) that can be found on various sites runs perfectly fine.
I think the developers at Coreplayer need to add some sort of hardware acceleration for the HD2. Maybe QTV or something along those lines...

How hard is it to look down the list of posts on the first page even? The thread is there. Perhaps you really do have a problem with brain usage.

Just a quick question... when you guys say "Coreplayer" you mean windows Media Player, yes? Or is there another player in there I haven't found.....

Have to say I am in total agreement with you.
Having so many new, new and even more new topics all based on the same subject may be easy for the poster creating a new topic but it's hell when you have to reply to one that may contradict another topic.
Much easier to have them all together under one umbrella of a topic.

just wanted to know how you where able to play xvid file? I got some strange green lines on coreplayer and huge lagging on mobile divx player, and it was a standard 700X400 clip.

Play in the album, this video shows the HD2 screen off quite nicely!
(800x480, 1500kbps x264, 128kbps AAC-LC, 1-pass)
Encoding was done in xvid4psp with custom settings.

Best Converter that can also handle HD MKV etc

I currently use Nero recode for mp4 which is very good in my opinion plus the video qualityis great, but need one that can handle HD rips, any pointers will be appreciated.

Try mediacoder its open source and its free, very powerful tool to convert videos.

Not sure if SUPER does mkv, but it's free and has loads of options.

Thanks have tried mediacoder but keep getting no output file error, ve played around some with no success...

What am I doing wrong in Winmenc, every time I encode something using either xvid or x264...and i copy over to the desire when i explore using astro, i cant find the files...

Did you use the profile setting......

I tried Winmenc today and it didn't fly for me either. 1st-pass runs fine but 2nd pass immediately renders a 0-bytes file. It's the same with single pass encoding. Perhaps we are missing some obligatory codecs for this program to function properly.

Thanks for this will give it a shot, but 2000kbps is a lot of bit rate and lot of memory card space, i will edit the settings and reduce the bit rate to around 750 for the video and bout 96 for audio..

I just use Handbrake.
800 x 480, 1500kbps data rate, 128 audio at 48khz

are you able to save a profile out.. haven't used HANDBAKE before so being a little lazy

I also like Format Factory. But Desire doesn't play video as nice as HD2 does...
Hope a real good player will come out soon...

Have you tried mvideoplayer off the market, runs nicely.

Yes, I have now. It does work ok, but still seems that HD2 perform better.

Super simple totally worth it. Otherwise I just used handbreak which I still do for larger files which I want to tweak more. Miro Video Converter is soooo easy though and nice if you just want to drag and drop a file to get what you need.
Sadly I cant post a link yet since I'm a "new" user, though I've looked at this site for years. Wonder how long it'll take to be verified?

wow that does look really good, it even has a Nexus One profile which should work perfectly!
will check it out...
edit: tried it and dont like it. It gives you no control over bit rate/quality and as such transcoding a large file ends up in a file almost the same size.

Hi thanks for the .ini, I changed the bitrate to 1000, framerate to original and the audio bitrate to 160. looks nice. I am going to play around with the video bit rate and see how low I can take it.
What is interesting is that the Desire will play these x264 encodes but not my handbrake x264 encodes, wonder what I am doing wrong.....

I have been messing about with different settings and think i have found the solution to perfect video convertions but some other fault always appears.

I have found the best video player for the HTC HD2

After searching for the best video player for the HD2, including trying CorePlayer (latest version) and the Smart Movie 4.0, I have finally come to the conclusion that the Mobile Window Media that comes with the HD2 is the best player.
Here are the reasons why.
1. Core Player cannot play the movie Transformers 2 that comes with the HD2 smoothly while the Mobile Window Media player can play it very smoothly.
2. Instead of paying for Core Player, use the money and buy the ImTOO MPEG encoder ultimate and convert the .VOB file in the DVD disc of your favorite movie and convert it to H.264/MPEG-4 video (*.mp4) with 800 x 480 resolution and 1500 bit rate and you will get a movie that is just like the Transformer movies that comes with the HTC HD2.

Just FYI the Mobile Window Media player embedded uses hardware support for video playback. The Coreplayer has yet to do this so invariably it will suffer as a result..

Not sure which of the two is better but still nice to know..

I agree...
Using the HTC encoder from these forums today took too long and the quality was sub-par. With this program you can choose the bit-rate and the quality is sensational..

Kudos mate

I really dislike re-coding my media library in advance of wanting to watch something on the go, and I find CorePlayer handles well with almost an XVID/Divx I drop it's way, at a very acceptable quality level.
It's my two biggest gripes with this machine:
1) Windows Media Player has such limited codec support.
2) HTC won't pay Qualcomm to allow other companies access to the drivers (I think that's the reason anyway).
Either way, it nearl put me off the HD2, until I felt reassured the 1GHz Snapdragon could make up for the lack of native support.
I used that encoder year's back for my Sony Ericcson, but again I'm not prepared to put that work in (not out of laziness, I just want to be ready to go at a moment's notice and not have to factor in half-an-hour per video - nor do I want to re-encode all of my thousands of media files )

I think that there is a big flaw in windows media player: it doesn't rememeber the position of the film. That means that if you close it the position is lost. I typically look the films in small parts, as logical in a mobile device. There is a plugin to solve this but it doesn't work.
This is not a problem in core player, but core player is a lot slower.

i use a divx player on my HD2 for all my movies - they play great.

I just use the iPhone/Ipod Touch preset. I think you can configure it for any output resolution you want though. The other great thing about Handbrake is that it can burn subtitles onto the video

Try this out and let me know what you think about the video quality. I think it looks pretty damn good. This is the official DivX player - v0.94 (Released early 2010). The interface is very minimal but it definitely seems to be better than CorePlayer so far.
Please throw some quality high-res videos (800x480 and beyond) at it and post back.
If you guys can, it would be a good idea to throw in a few tests with Chainfire's D3D & OpenGL ES drivers.

If only WMP's "scale to fit" didn't cut off part of the video (we're talking resolutions that are LESS than 800x480).
That and the ridiculous audio lag on the HD2. I can't believe people can stand watching Transformers with that delay. Even from the very beginning where a fishing buoy is dropped into the water (and the splash is heard well after the impact, lol) all the mouths move well in advance of the words coming out.
It's preposterous. I'm holding out on the hope that Linux (accelerated) will eventually be the solution, in which case mplayer would be the "Best video player on the HD2" hands down.

Confirmed!
This (DivX for WinMo v0.94) is MUCH better than CorePlayer. The video is very smooth, except for some very occasional freezing of the frames which is barely noticeable. I observed that only once though.
There is absolutely NO Audio lag. All my videos played fine except for one, but in this case, the audio played before the video randomly in some areas of the timeline.
I'm starting to wonder if this might be hardware accelerated.
@nagagaya: HD2 does not support TV-Out.

Going by the file date from within the cab, the release is as recent as 25-MAY-10!

Interesting... I tried it with three HQ DivX files, and they all stuttered and were jerky, compared to playing fine in TCMCP.
Ignoring playback, my general thoughts are:

I love the Video Browser - always wanted one of these (and would LOVE one as a Sense tab)

like the title says.. what do you use to get the best video quality and best conversions from movies for you N1 i use videora and Android Converter and they both are.. mediocre at best

I never managed to convert a video on ubuntu to get it playing on the nexus.
Now I have this software player that can play alot though...

I used ffmpeg, now I don't convert anymore 'cause I don't watch films on my phone

I use Super for my conversion needs. it's free but runs on windows.
Also since I'm lazy, I use Rockplayer that does a good job at playing nearly everything

rock player... no re-encoding necessary

doubleTwist.... its like iTunes for iphone but faster. Just drag video to software, it will convert and transfer to your phone at highest bitrate possible to retain best quality.

Handbrake is quite excellent; I've used it with the iPod preset with great success.

I like to convert videos to save space. I don't need a full-resolution movie on a 3.7-inch screen.

How many 12GB Blu-Ray rips would i get on my 16GB SD card without using Handbrake?

I use Any Video Converter, it's free and easy to use. I mainly watch Anime on my phone with subtitles so this works well. It can convert an .mkv into an mpeg4 and RockPlayer will still display the subtitles.
I can't seem to get Handbrake to keep the subtitles after converting .mkv's into .mp4. I've tried extracting the .srt file from the .mkv and burning them into the converted file with handbrake but it still doesn't work.

is there anyone covering video and or audio on the phone itself? would probably be hard on the battery but I can think of a couple of situations I would have needed this function.

I don't know if you know, but encoding/decoding is one of the most CPU stressing processes. For sure you may re-encode a video, but while it takes ~30 minutes to convert a film on a dual core 3 Ghz, it may take ages on our phones.

All video formats are compressed. The ones i use just happen to be compressed better. Start with a good quality source and work down. The Handbrake converted films look pretty good on an Amoled, WVGA screen at sizes as low as 700MB. At sizes of 2 Gigabyte or more they look incredible!

Hey people, i am taking a trip to europe next month and i wanted to watch some movies on the plane to kill some time. Does anyone know how i can download either free movies or paid movies to my evo?

If you own the dvds, you can rip them using PSPVideo9, or whatever number they are now. You will be able to rip and decrypt the DVDs into a viewable format for just about any mobile Device. I hope you got a big card though. They are pretty big depending on the movie.

Piracy aside, this raises a good question. What(if any) converters are people using to get videos into an Evo compatible format? Also, what encoding profiles are you using with said programs?

I'm encoding my movies in mp4 format using Ripbot (freeware). Also heard Handbrake is another good alternative encoder.

Any tips on what encoding parameters you're using? I don't really need HD video on my phone, just a decent quality and minimal size. Similar to what a DVDrip is for the "community" small in size, still decent quality (or so i hear)

I have used Bitripper to rip my dvd collection. Each movie ends of being around 1gb give or take and the quality is pretty good.

A good app for simply viewing movies is "Crackle". It has a good quantity of movies to view which are free, as well as the app itself.

i use handbrake and use the iphone setting works pretty good for format and dvdshrink to rip and do a reauthor taking out all menus and lang,ect... using those two most movie run about 500mb(lowest)to 960mb(highest).

i'm running MIKG 2.1 and the stock video player now plays .avi files
it was annoying how there was virtually no android .avi support when i first got my evo.
Handbrake is great also, you can convert 1080p or 720p videos that will be insanely clean

MacTheRipper and Handbreak to mp4's works great for me.

I use freemake video converter. It's free and very simple to use. You don't even have to know what format you need. Ask you what platform you want to covert to(blu-ray, apple, android,youtube, flash, etc).
