Hi there,
A couple of questions from a HD owner about the Leo.
Can anyone comment on the video performance on the phone if you drop a non converted avi file/movie. HD used to stutter and get out of synch... Can you use VLC or CorePlayer with any file? Is it smooth?
Also anyone notice lag in the interface?
Love the phone, but I want it to run ABSOLUTELY smoothly... While the HD is fantastic, it's still get frustrating to use at time.
Lots of people have already commented on it. There are threads for those questions, give them a read.
What a waste of a response... It feels like the assumption on this forum is that everyone has time to go and read EVERYTHING and/or that search engines are so developed, brain usage should become irrelevant...
Pathetic...
Depends on the size and bitrate of the avi file, as well as the background programs running. I tried running a 848x480 882kbps(video) avi file and sometimes it stutters every minute or so, sometimes it just runs smoothly. Let's just say that... it's perfectly watchable. Not any moments where I can see the video being tremendously out of sync with the audio. Also tried a 704x400 826kbps(video) XviD file as well... and that runs fine.
I was using CorePlayer.
I don't have any HD avi files, but trying to play HD mkv files fail. (just manages to play 400px-height mkv files)
Using Coreplayer, video's have screen tearing when using directdraw but the performance of playback is good.
What I did was switch to GDI, no more screen tearing but the benchmark score is lower than directdraw. Also changed the smooth zoom to always be on and not only at 50%. This help reduce pixellation.
A standard tv episode avi file (624x352, 350MB) that can be found on various sites runs perfectly fine.
I think the developers at Coreplayer need to add some sort of hardware acceleration for the HD2. Maybe QTV or something along those lines...

How hard is it to look down the list of posts on the first page even? The thread is there. Perhaps you really do have a problem with brain usage.
Just a quick question... when you guys say "Coreplayer" you mean windows Media Player, yes? Or is there another player in there I haven't found.....

Have to say I am in total agreement with you.
Having so many new, new and even more new topics all based on the same subject may be easy for the poster creating a new topic but it's hell when you have to reply to one that may contradict another topic.
Much easier to have them all together under one umbrella of a topic.

just wanted to know how you where able to play xvid file? I got some strange green lines on coreplayer and huge lagging on mobile divx player, and it was a standard 700X400 clip.
Here's a nice sample I've made for the HD2.
http://gamesquare.co.uk/leo/toystory3-tlr1_h720p.mp4
Play in the album, this video shows the HD2 screen off quite nicely!
(800x480, 1500kbps x264, 128kbps AAC-LC, 1-pass)
Encoding was done in xvid4psp with custom settings.

It's great for a PPC phone: H.264 30fps 2Mbps @ VGA!
Who can verify this with a mp4 file encoding with H.264 on X1's Windows Media Player (not TCPMP/CorePlayer)?
AVI files can't be supported by Windows Media Player. You can test them with TCPMP/CorePlayer.

Dear Naffets, I've uploaded some testing video files. Hope for your result.
at work at the moment, will try afterwards
Ok, testin right now. First zip tested, results:
Test 1. GTA4_Trailer_640-480.H264.24fps.mp4.zip
Only GTA4_Trailer_640-480.H264.24fps.800kbps_L.mp4 was working at 100% speed with build in Windows Media Player. Versions of movies with H on the end working only with sound (no video). TCPMP not working on X1, only modifided version by eoc for GoForce chip is starting normal but won't play h264 files.
Test 2. GTA4_Trailer_640-480.H264.30fps.mp4.zip
GTA4_Trailer_640-480.H264.30fps.800kbps_L.mp4 file was working almost ok, only sometimes stops for a second. Rest files was lagging a lot, all tested with WMP. TCPMP not match h264 so not tested.
Test 3. GTA4_Trailer_640-480.Xvid.avi.zip
Files not working with WMP and TCPMP.
Test 4. GTA4_Trailer_800-448.Xvid.avi.zip
Files not working with WMP and TCPMP.
TCPMP and WM won't get you desireable results on the X1, mainly since WMP doesnt support xvid and other codecs and WMP is a weak video player. Your gonna want to use Coreplayer to really see a difference most likely as its much more enhanced then TCPMP (former project name) and WMP. At least I'm pretty sure that'll be the case with more recent devices. Then again TCPMP was obtimized back then for the ATI chip so who knows.
@ell82: Have you tried using SE internal video player instead? Thats what most users used to play the bond trailer shown online.
I tried watching the 800x448 trailer on my touch pro and it opened just fine, ofcourse the lower bit rates played a bit better around 75-80% but the the higher rates made my device cry lol.
Results with SE player which is on Panels are exactly the same.
Many thanks for your testing!

800*448 is the best 16:9 resolution for X1's WVGA screen.
Could you test it, especial the four mp4 files of 800kbps?
Stuttering at 800kbps/30fps?
2mbit/s @ 30fps fluidly?, ......rigggggght.
GOOD JOB S.E. !
And btw, afaik Coreplayer does not care one bit about the Imageon sitting there in the corner of the chipset. So 2mbit is just plain crazytalk if you'd ask me.

But Coreplayer allows users to choose how to play videos using which video mode on the system, for instance you can choose DirectDraw, Imageon Driver, Framebuffer, and etc. Each with plays with its own capabilities so it does in fact make a difference. the Tytn was a perfect example that had horrible playback on wmp until coreplayer came in and utilized the Imageon chip allowing a huge difference in video playback. Sooooo i'm pretty sure it does care. You just have to choose that mode under preferences.
Anyone willing to test these videos with the different options in coreplayer?

Most video's from the internet (P2P XviD's) have bitrates around 800kb/s @ 720x416 @ 24fps. Even without the "enhanced [email protected] hardware acceleration" the MSM720*A chipset will do just fine within Coreplayer.
No worries there.
[edit] Oh, and my bad for the misunderstanding of the advanced options of Coreplayer. Though, 2Mbit still seems pretty far-fetched in my opinion.
Yes, but I have many videos in very good quality with rates about 1.3-1.5 Mbps. Of course I don't need 2Mbps, but at least I want 1.5Mbps fluid. I hooooope...... Greez^^

Tomorrow my phone turns up, assuming the Core team don't take weeks and allow me to get a new serial for my new phone, I have an 8gb micro SD card full of 350mb TV shows that I want to test. Will report back as soon as I can get CorePlayer on the phone.
Forgive me cause i'm new to this forum, but I have an HTC Touch (don't know about the ELF part). My provider is Alltel.
I'm using Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate which has lots of presets, choosing windows mobile 6 wmv format and using the 320 x 240 resolution results in some really choppy playback on my phone. Trying a smaller resolution of 176 x 144 results in smoother playback but looks blurry compared to the other resolution.
I've googled and read that these phones have a 200mhz processor and thats why the video playback is choppy but when I go to Device Information under System I show a QUALCOMM 7500 (400MHz) processor.
Surely 400mhz is enough to play a small wmv file at 320 x 240? Does anyone have any ideas why my video playback is so choppy? Checked the encoded file on a few different pc's and it works fine with no play back issues. Just seems like the phone can't handle the task.

sounds like you have a HTC Vogue not Elf. IF you have GPS than you have the Vogue - If you have WIFI then you have Elf. I use Pocket Divx encoder to convert my video files for playback on my elf with a slower processor and the video's play smoothly. This question has already been asked several times - I have answered to this question personally before so I know. You need to make sure that you use the Search feature before posting questions.
Pocket Divx encoder is free - Just google it and you should find int rather quickly.
i did search and about all i can seem to find is that most think wmv is not a good format and to use a different player. i have just tried tcpmp and encoding as mpg and 3gp and not only does it still play slow, it plays slower than before using those formats and that player. it would not play wmv files because of something missing, i'm assuming to get you to buy coreplayer. i dont have a problem paying for it just hate to use it without knowing if it will solve my problem or not. i am going to google the software you mentioned and give it a try and see what happens.
on a side note - you guys should be careful about crawling people's asses over searching. i searched for the terms video and choppy and choppy video together and since nothing useful popped up i started my own with the intentions that if someone in the future came through and searched that they would have an easier time finding it.
no go on Pocket Divx encoder either, it doesn't even attempt to play the files in windows media player and using tcpmp still results in choppy playback.
i'm gonna keep reading up anywhere i can find some useful info but i'm thinking this phone will probably end up going back. my last phone never roamed but this one roams 24/7. besides the touch screen, the ability to play videos was why i bought this phone in the first place.
ahh well, time for bed. i got to go have a hernia surgery tomorrow so maybe by the next time i log in here someone will have posted with something enlightening.
thanks anyway for the suggestion hotrod

I was not crawling up your ass - If I wanted to flame you for not searching, I would not have answered your question. I was only giving you some advice, and I was stating a fact. You may have done a brief search. Searching the term video should have brought up these two results
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=411503
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=419427
Two completely different threads asking basically the same question you have asked. You just need to search deeper sometimes then the first couple of results.
Go ahead and take a look at what is suggested in both of these threads. You may find some useful information there.
On a side note: Ask any moderator about the importance of searching. They will remind you every time to search if they know the answer to your question is already out there. Multiple threads asking the same questions results in a lot of clutter in these forums, which is why it can be so difficult finding the information you are looking for when searching and the mods are on a mission keeping the forums clear of clutter. Read the sites and forums rules about posting and if you want to, ask any moderator.

Sorry man, it won't work. All HTC devices with Qualcomm 400 MHz CPU (Vogue, Kaiser, Polaris) haven't got video acceleration. There aren't any alternative drivers, ROMs or something. You can read more about this problem in Polaris wiki.

Good to know. I didn't know about this problem with the Qualcomm 400 MHz processors. Glad I have an Elf I guess, I have never had any problems watching videos on my device. Once converted, they all play really nice, smooth and clear.

man that is ridiculous!
thanks for the help and thanks for showing me those results hotrod, i'll admit i was in a hurry at the time
problem solved
I hated to give up on my phone and spent an entire day at work searching and I have found a solution for my problem.
mobile.divx.com - site seems to be down right now but using their player my videos are playing fine. doesn't seem to play .wmv but using the mentioned encoding software and encoding it for divx and it works great. no studdering or peeling and very sharp picture at fullscreen resolution. sound seems more like a mono/stereo hybrid but i can live with that.
hope this thread helps another in the future

OK, I'm not sure if this is a joke or not, but you can't play divx or xvid on Android yet. Supposedly future Desire updates will have that.

The Archos 5 Internet Tabled (w/ Android) can play Divx, xvid and mostly any other video format, mkv and HD included. Of course, that is because they have a proprietary player.
The Desire is rumored to get an update soon that will allow it to play Divx files. The hardware is more than capable of doing it!

How well does yxflash work with playing back avi-files on the Desire?
I've tried playing 700 mb video (624x352, bitrate aprox. 1500, framrate 25) on a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 with yxflash, and it didn't handle it very well. My
Samsung Omnia HD is able to play the file without a problem.
Have installed it on mine and it plays the divx pretty well. Very slightly jerky, but very watchable. It could also be the encoding as it is the only one I have tried so far.

Odd. Anyway I've discovered doubleTwist now. It's very good. I synced my divx video folder with my phone and as it copies the files it converts on the fly to mp4 format. Works like a dream.
Also, keep an eye out for CorePlayer.
It's in development and sold make an excellent player of al formats for us.
Quite agree coreplayer would be great i am suprised that they have not done it allready.
Keep an eye on this: http://twitter.com/corecodec
Although the coreplayer is in developement, developers of the corecodec stated, that Google's SDK/NDK misses some features for native support, that makes it so hard to bring a final

hopefully once the guy who created yxflash gets a n1 or desire tweaks it to run smoothly.
i had yxflash on my g1 and it played most avi's smoothly.. considering the hardware 528mhz to 1ghz - with new gfx hardware also.
even winmobile 6.1 pro on my treo 750 could play avi fine.

No it can't.
Convert you file with mencoder to mp4 and play it on the Desire.
I zipped the necessary files:
mediafire.com/?yx0jbn42qdn
Just drag and drop the file you want to convert on the file convert2desire(.bat).
After waiting some time your file will be converted in the ideal .mp4 format for the Desire.
You will find it in the same directory as the convert2desire(.bat) file.
I will not buy an Android phone before a good .avi/divx player is available. I'm using WM since 2000 and my entire collection of video's is /avi/divx/mkv.
I just couldn't believe my ears when I heard Android (on HTC Desire) can't play those formats.

Rockplayerbase (aka rockplayer) works perfectly. It's now in open beta. Search for it.
yep rockplayer works great......no pause at all
Well, the WMV files will play but it's slow & jerky.
so isn't there to play HD AVI files on htc HD mini?
AVI will play!, but if 720p and above won't.
I searched so much and couldn't find one?
Strange it's Microsoft Windows Mobile! I don't believe, it must have!
We see on our Computer Windows has a Great Media Player
Thanks
Can't play at MP4 720p & above!
In the Album, I see the Picture of the Video!
but when press it, a Black screen will display! looks like it's it's finished?
Can't play at MP4 720p & above!
but lower yes.
So the problem is the Windows Mobile or htc HD mini? or needs a Software Codecs?
Thanks
same problem

Have you tried another video player like CorePlayer?
Maybe the CPU is not strong enough to play that files...
Yes I tried CorePlayer Before!
But I Never seen too Worst Player
Well Codiak, the CorePlayer doesn't play HD or so Jerky plays!
We need to be Powerful and should play HD Videos!
I Don't think the Phone is Bad;,
I think the Windows Mobile or the Players aren't Good!
So any another ideas?

wait for Android to be fully ported, and try Android players.
btw why do you want to play HD videos on HALF VGA screen resolution?
FULL HD=1920x1080
HALF VGA=320x480
p.s. i converted some videos on 720p and didnt work, then i converted to 480p and works fine, and looks very good, clear and bright..just like HD on TV,give it a try

why do you SPAM forum posting your questions in many places??
Well, tzacapaca
Like I said on top; Can't Play 720p AND Above, But Lower Yes
And Why I will play on my phone, Because it's need time to be converted, much files, quility lose, transferring files, to be sure high quality, and... etc...
And the World is Going to be Full 3D xHD experience on MicroPhones,
about the Android Yes you're Right.
Dear tzacapaca,
If I really Spamming, I will Delete this my Question Sooonest as possible!
So Tell me Now Should I Delete IT? Say: YES! or NO!
Answer me soonest as possible, because I NEVER like Spamming or illegally!
Thank you,
Still no reason to spam the forum.
As tzacapaca said: Its absurd to play HD videos on an HVGA device!

...
Well, tzacapaca
I'm Sorry for Spamming, but I don't think it's absurd to play HD Videos on mini, I know no need to view HD Videos on mini! I'm wathing the Video both 40'inch LED TV and phone via USB, so if two files it will eat space, one's better than two..
And I see, I can't delete this mine Thread by myself...
about Technolgy, I've PC Installed Mac & Windows,..... too long
You can Delete this thread by yourself...
But there is no fun in watching hd videos in such a small screen.
Ive searched for various recommended settings and tried the ones from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060825
And, for the most part, the videos are fine but what gets me is in situations where the camera is panning there is a noticeable jitter to the movement. Its consistent. Its only happening on the TF. I can play the encoded MP4s/M4Vs in VLC on the laptop and no jitter.
Id really love to get rid of this, it kind of kills the experience of watching videos because I like to watch shows like Top Gear on it and they pan a lot like that, although it does impact other shows. Its just more noticeable because it only happens when the entire camera is panning around subjects in way that most of the image on the screen is moving.
Im playing in the gallery BTW.
Hi,
this is a well known problem with the google libaries for hardware decoding. Until we get a update, there are only two solutions:
Use software decoding. Apps like Rockplayer, Moboplayer... have this option.
Use a Flash-Player. There is no stuttering with the flash libaries.
Does software decoding drain more battery?
And upcoming HB3.2 is supposed to improve hardware decoding of video files ...

I hope because I have not had good luck with rock/mobo and HD content. Right now playing with the stock gallery is the best option I have seen. I was just hoping maybe there is something I could do to drop the compression or quality (without sacrificing HD) to get rid of this odd jitter.
Its a shame too because its the only thing that lets down the media experience. I have had multiple people interrrupt me on the plane to ask about it the screen is that good (well, than and after seeing me snap my netbook in half and put it back together ). Heck, even ipad guys have complimented how things look on it (and their screen uses the same tech IIRC).
I builded a very simple html site in the last few days which has the jwplayer flash player. This is the best way to watch hd content with less than 29,xx fps without the stuttering. Maybe i will put it online later today.
If you want to hard telecine the material you can remove most of the judder.
It's an unfortunate side effect of the GPU decoding that we haven't yet pinned down.

Is there any way to load MKV files with JWPlayer without naming them and their location in HTML? I'd prefer a browse option myself. Otherwise it's pretty useless to me.
I tried using Handbrake to encode to "Apple TV 2" preset. which is basically 720p in mp4 file type. It plays back very smoothly with rockplayer lite, mVideoplayer or moboplayer.

That's actually a great preset for this device. It's mpeg4 AVC High profile at a reasonable quality.
Good choice if you don't know a lot about how Handbrake works.

actually its not smooth at all, there's still a minor lag which is obvious to my eyes..so far even with the very latest 3.1 update (the one with the new tegra bootup logo), the lag is still there..i am hoping 3.2 would address this...it sucks that you cant really play 1080p or even 720p smoothly

You're either doing it wrong (possible) or confusing judder for 'smoothness'. Files encoded at sane bitrates play back fine in 720p and are completely smooth. Unfortunately, as described by sontin earlier in this thread, there is some poor telecining going on in the hardware decoding and panning shots tend to create the effect of judder which can be somewhat distracting.
It's unfortunately probably a result of the lack of a NEON MPE core in the Tegra 2 chip that causes this.
But for the record, judder ≠ lack of smooth playback.

well i guess you're right, its a judder then, but if that's the case, is there any way to solve it? i want a perfect playback like what i get on a pc
I do feel though that playback has improved considerably with the last update. I have downloaded some files that were encoded specifically for the Apple TV and other such devices. Basically mp4 with [email protected] encoding with bitrates around 3000 kbps and stereo AAC sound. Before this update, every now and again they would freeze for five seconds or so, especially in high action scenes. Now they seem much smoother. Judder is still there, but it's definitely watchable.

Nothing to do with telecine. It only occurs when there is audio in the file. Mux a video with no soundfile embedded and it plays buttery smooth. Something occurs when sound is added which causes a weird juddering effect. It's been suggested it's hardware acceleration not being enabled causing it but I'm not so sure. Jitter can happen when the audio framerate does not match up with the video framerate to the refresh rate of the display or somesuch (Not sure on the technicalities). It's why tools like ReClock are used on PC's.
I can only repeat what i said a few times: The only way to get nearly smooth playback with hardware decoding is using a flash player. There is no other solution.
And there is a positive sideeffect: Using the browser filesystem (file:///) makes video streaming over the network more useable than using a file manager app. Even over HTTP (thx to drivedav and co) it's much better.

yes, you're right. with jwplayer it works perfectly, smooth and no judder!
Interesting
for those of you that are interest!
This is what i have decided to do and its quite amazing results for its purpose!
Previously i had ben encoding mp4's with x264, @ 1280x544 or 600 whatever the video wanted to strech too, i was finding amazing quality even at fullscreen! I was amazinly happy with respectable file sizes
The dark knight 2.3gb
Saving private ryan 3.5gb
Quantam of solice 2.6 CB
However, after my huge success! I wanted to accomplish more! I need more videos on my transformer! I felt ripped off, i could not put more videos then what i had becuasw of the file sizes!
After some trial and error i found an amazing discovery but it comes with some sacrifice,
Let me talk about the file sizes first!
The dark knight 1.1gb
Saving private ryan 1.6gb
Quantam of solice 1.2gb
The hangover 880mb
Some of my movies are under 1 gb wow
I have 27 movies on my sdcard alone! Which is great!
Ok so this is how i managed such small files with mp4,x264. First off i started my encodes by dropping the resoltion from 1280 to 800 and then letting handbreak decide how to strech it
800x544 is what it normally looks like, the quality is set to 21! This is an inferior resolution for filesize with mp4! In some cases 60% filesize drop!!
This comes with a small drawback! I run my videos in the stock player anyways, so they will not be fullscreen movies! Myself i dont mind the bars on top and bottom!
If this bothers you, then this discovery is not for you!!
MKV FANS!!
STOP!! , before you start to lecture me, about mkv ,doing higher res, with 500mb encode's ! just stop!
I undersand, and know how as well , but its not supported properly right now ,and thats not what im discussing
I hope someone finds this useful
Thanks
I don't want to reencode anything. I just want it to play my existing MKV's without juddering. How do I use file:///??? to play my existing MKV's with the Flash player?
