After searching for the best video player for the HD2, including trying CorePlayer (latest version) and the Smart Movie 4.0, I have finally come to the conclusion that the Mobile Window Media that comes with the HD2 is the best player.
Here are the reasons why.
1. Core Player cannot play the movie Transformers 2 that comes with the HD2 smoothly while the Mobile Window Media player can play it very smoothly.
2. Instead of paying for Core Player, use the money and buy the ImTOO MPEG encoder ultimate and convert the .VOB file in the DVD disc of your favorite movie and convert it to H.264/MPEG-4 video (*.mp4) with 800 x 480 resolution and 1500 bit rate and you will get a movie that is just like the Transformer movies that comes with the HTC HD2.

Just FYI the Mobile Window Media player embedded uses hardware support for video playback. The Coreplayer has yet to do this so invariably it will suffer as a result..

Using the HTC encoder from these forums today took too long and the quality was sub-par. With this program you can choose the bit-rate and the quality is sensational..

I really dislike re-coding my media library in advance of wanting to watch something on the go, and I find CorePlayer handles well with almost an XVID/Divx I drop it's way, at a very acceptable quality level.
It's my two biggest gripes with this machine:
1) Windows Media Player has such limited codec support.
2) HTC won't pay Qualcomm to allow other companies access to the drivers (I think that's the reason anyway).
Either way, it nearl put me off the HD2, until I felt reassured the 1GHz Snapdragon could make up for the lack of native support.
I used that encoder year's back for my Sony Ericcson, but again I'm not prepared to put that work in (not out of laziness, I just want to be ready to go at a moment's notice and not have to factor in half-an-hour per video - nor do I want to re-encode all of my thousands of media files )

I think that there is a big flaw in windows media player: it doesn't rememeber the position of the film. That means that if you close it the position is lost. I typically look the films in small parts, as logical in a mobile device. There is a plugin to solve this but it doesn't work.
This is not a problem in core player, but core player is a lot slower.
i use a divx player on my HD2 for all my movies - they play great.

I just use the iPhone/Ipod Touch preset. I think you can configure it for any output resolution you want though. The other great thing about Handbrake is that it can burn subtitles onto the video

Try this out and let me know what you think about the video quality. I think it looks pretty damn good. This is the official DivX player - v0.94 (Released early 2010). The interface is very minimal but it definitely seems to be better than CorePlayer so far.
Please throw some quality high-res videos (800x480 and beyond) at it and post back.
If you guys can, it would be a good idea to throw in a few tests with Chainfire's D3D & OpenGL ES drivers.
If only WMP's "scale to fit" didn't cut off part of the video (we're talking resolutions that are LESS than 800x480).
That and the ridiculous audio lag on the HD2. I can't believe people can stand watching Transformers with that delay. Even from the very beginning where a fishing buoy is dropped into the water (and the splash is heard well after the impact, lol) all the mouths move well in advance of the words coming out.
It's preposterous. I'm holding out on the hope that Linux (accelerated) will eventually be the solution, in which case mplayer would be the "Best video player on the HD2" hands down.

This (DivX for WinMo v0.94) is MUCH better than CorePlayer. The video is very smooth, except for some very occasional freezing of the frames which is barely noticeable. I observed that only once though.
There is absolutely NO Audio lag. All my videos played fine except for one, but in this case, the audio played before the video randomly in some areas of the timeline.
I'm starting to wonder if this might be hardware accelerated.
@nagagaya: HD2 does not support TV-Out.

Going by the file date from within the cab, the release is as recent as 25-MAY-10!
Interesting... I tried it with three HQ DivX files, and they all stuttered and were jerky, compared to playing fine in TCMCP.
Ignoring playback, my general thoughts are:

I have an older HTC HD and it cannot play 800 x 480 video files smoothly so I usually have to reencode it to a resolution of 480 x 272 to have smooth playback with coreplayer with about 105% average speed on the benchmark results.
My question is, if I buy the HTC HD2 with its more powerful Snapdragon 1GHz processor, would coreplayer be able to play .avi or .mkv files with 800 x 420 resolution smoothly with over 100% average speed on the benchmark results?
Player smooth video with good bitrate and high resolution is very important to me because I do a lot of movie watching with my older HTC HD.

It's impossible to answer this - it depends so strongly on which video you're talking about. If you've got an mp4 file with a bit-rate of 2000kb/s encoded using CABAC then CorePlayer will have significant problems with it. Lower bit-rates (and avoiding CABAC) may well be fine.
This is slightly odd question, in a way: where are you getting your 800x420 videos from? I've never seen a downloadable video at that resolution (except for some samples on these fora). If the answer is that you are making them yourself by transcoding an existing file to change the resolution, then this begs the question: why on Earth would you want to transcode it into a format that you need CorePlayer to play? If you're transcoding then it would make more sense to transcode it into a format that can be played easily using Pocket Media Player or the HTCAlbum player - both of which do a much better job than CorePlayer on the (admittedly narrow) range of formats and codecs that they support.
Coreplayer does a very good job on the sort of lower-resolution AVI encoded with xvid that people normally use to distribute SD TV or DVD rips. So, between them, you pretty much cover the bases: stuff with a resolution of >800x480 that is transcoded should be converted into something you can play in HTCAlbum, while anything with lower resolution will probably play quite nicely in CorePlayer.
Yes, 800x480 avis should play fine on Coreplayer, tested with a few HD trailers down-res to 800x480 and they play fine. But of course, don't expect to play 800x480 mp4s with high bitrates in Coreplayer, it doesn't bode well. MKVs wise it might not work from the limited testing i've done in that area.
@Shasarak, some videos for some strange reason prefer to be transcoded into some formats. For example, on my setup, mkvs with vorbis/dts audio, when transcoded into mp4, they tend to go OOS. However when transcoded into divx/xvid, they work fine...Not sure exactly why, but that might be a reason.
Also, HTC Video player doesn't allow any form of playlist or folder based playback. Some people might prefer this to watching a movie, exit, click another video, rinse and repeat.

I also primarily upgraded to the HD2 for movie watching. Love it.
Plays 700meg avi's in any format via coreplayer. Usually around 180% so heaps of head room.
Screen is also a massive improvement and battery life is better. Eg the hd would only play 2 movies before flat however the hd2 is only at 50% battery after two full length movies.
At this stage after 2 months I have no reason to look for a new phone.

It's not all that imo.
Tested it with some re-encodes I made, and whilst it does play them smoothly (especially compared to the retail 1.36 version), the quality needs to be dropped slightly to do so, whereas HTC Album plays it smooth and at max quality.

I'm afraid it isn't and you didn't.
You may well have a licence for the commercial version of CorePlayer. You do NOT, however, have a licence for the hardware-accelerated version, unless you actually own a Toshiba TG01. The two products are not the same, and are covered by different licences. (And even if you do own a TG01, you still don't have a licence to take the application off there and install it on another phone.)

I have found that any videos I play in Media Play or Album player play back with the video and audio out of Sync. I therefore use CorePlayer as it allows me to change the sync to compensate.
It is strange as the video files play in perfect sync on my PC but not on the HD2.
Anyone have any ideas why this would be?????

I bought yxplayer, only to have it be very jittery playing AVI files.... So I ended up using Doubletwist to convert and sync the videos to my N1 and this works flawlessly.
However, if Coreplayer comes to the N1, this will indeed be awesome. I was using it on my HD2 work phone, and its top notch, I'd pay double the Winmo version for it if it was to come out on Android!
There is talk of the Bravo playing divx out of the box, so hopefully it can be ported across.
I have an archos 5 internet tablet with android 1.6 and archos has their own hardware accelerated video player its ridicules it plays pretty much every video formats including 720p mkv and 720p youtube videos, and most audio codecs including ac3.
Wonder if someone here could figure a way to port it to the N1.

There is actually no such thing as "DivX".
What they are selling is actually H.263/MPEG4-ASP and using a BAD VALUE FOURCC.
As a result, ALL players can play so-called "DivX" files as long as you fix the fourcc and package it in a sensible container (i.e. 3gp or mp4). No transcoding is required unless the video uses a bitrate or resolution that is just too far out of the devices specifications to decode.
Repackaging is trivial -- you can just run the files through ffmpeg with -f option to set a sane fourcc and setting the audio and video codecs to "copy".
I just played around with an HD2 at one of my local T-Mobile stores. I was very impressed. That screen is amazing and everything that I played with was so fast and smooth. I was wondering about the Transformers videos. I didn't get to dig into it too much to try to figure this out on my own. What format are the videos? I assume they have the video player built into it since it plays without any other UI just open it up and play pause etc. I was blown away with how fast you were able to seek to different spots on the video, no buffer/delay time at all. Is that a result thanks to the speedy processor or a great player or both? It would be nice to be able to encode movies and build in the player like that for other movies, or mod that player to be able to choose from a list videos?
I have not used a WinMo phone for a while, the last one I owned was a Shadow (Juno) so this is a big change. After playing with it I am very very tempted to go buy. I would be 100% sold if they had Android working on it and I could dual boot. Either way it is an awesome phone!
Those Transformers movies are mp4 encoded. What's happening is the phone is using the HTC stock video player from the albums. It's the only thing that properly uses hardware acceleration that I have seen, the quickness you see when moving around the slider in the movie is really processor based. The TP2 always takes a second or two to find your spot when doing that.
Very nice, so if I encode with MP4 as I can expect the same results as transformers is getting with the stock media player? TMPMP/Coreplayer , was always the "best" media player as far as I knew back in the day. It probably supports more codecs but are there any performance upgrades that you could expect from using that program over the stock video player?

Coreplayer is currently not dealing very well with MP4 video files. The best way to play them back is via Windows Media Player of HTC Album player. MP4 currently offers the best quality and performance in video for the modern HTC WM/WP devices.

The Archos 5 Internet Tabled (w/ Android) can play Divx, xvid and mostly any other video format, mkv and HD included. Of course, that is because they have a proprietary player.
The Desire is rumored to get an update soon that will allow it to play Divx files. The hardware is more than capable of doing it!

I've tried playing 700 mb video (624x352, bitrate aprox. 1500, framrate 25) on a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 with yxflash, and it didn't handle it very well. My
Samsung Omnia HD is able to play the file without a problem.
Have installed it on mine and it plays the divx pretty well. Very slightly jerky, but very watchable. It could also be the encoding as it is the only one I have tried so far.

i found xyflash on the desire pretty poor. playing a tv show in divx format. very choppy frame rate.

Odd. Anyway I've discovered doubleTwist now. It's very good. I synced my divx video folder with my phone and as it copies the files it converts on the fly to mp4 format. Works like a dream.
Also, keep an eye out for CorePlayer.
It's in development and sold make an excellent player of al formats for us.
Quite agree coreplayer would be great i am suprised that they have not done it allready.

i had yxflash on my g1 and it played most avi's smoothly.. considering the hardware 528mhz to 1ghz - with new gfx hardware also.

No it can't.
Convert you file with mencoder to mp4 and play it on the Desire.
I zipped the necessary files:

Just drag and drop the file you want to convert on the file convert2desire(.bat).
After waiting some time your file will be converted in the ideal .mp4 format for the Desire.
You will find it in the same directory as the convert2desire(.bat) file.
I will not buy an Android phone before a good .avi/divx player is available. I'm using WM since 2000 and my entire collection of video's is /avi/divx/mkv.
I just couldn't believe my ears when I heard Android (on HTC Desire) can't play those formats.

Rockplayerbase (aka rockplayer) works perfectly. It's now in open beta. Search for it.

Can anyone confirm whether the DHD offers native divx / avi playback it does this require third party software such as rockplayer or mplayer?

dont waste your time with rockplayer, it loses sync all the time now and the dev wont trasferre your licence when you change phones.
im currently using vplayer alpha - it free and tbh excellent app. ive not noticed any sync problems since loading it, and it handles 720p with no problems.

Just to confirm that DivX/Xvid plays natively, however, I tried a high bit rate video and it lagged beyond belief. I suggest you try Rockplayer or Vplayer, both are very capable.... whatever happened to Core Player for Android!

I agree, just tried the native player and I can feel the lagginess and the framerate is slow... Rockplayer played the same video smoothly...
I tried to play a 1,5 GB Xvid with the stock player, which wasn't a big success, then installed the free rockplayer from the market, which worked fine, excellent playback and the screensize makes it very watchable (gotta use earplugs though)

Hi all! My main use of a smartphone is to play 720p Videos on the go. I've tried all of the last giants (Htc Desire, Sony X10, Hd2 with Android roms...) using native videos player,Rockplayer,Alphaplayer but my 720p flv videos did not play smoothly.Now I have a Samsung Vibrant, so far so good! All of my videos play with no issues.
My question is: does the Desire HD capable of playing 720p videos in flv format smoothkly (Ps:I'd like to buy it for the bigger screen and 8Mpxls)?

why dont you just re-encode it to a file format that takes less powered to decode ?
Hi. Because I have more than 500 Go of movies, mangas and many things in 720p flv format so I don't have time to change them when I want to travel.
I might be wrong but I THINK the SGS is king when it comes to movie playback and the formats supported out of the box.
I can't speak for the DHD yet as I don't have one but I'm sure someone will be able to check this out for you.
Id also like to know were Core media player for android went.
Wonder if it ever will get released.

Is true, the SGS plays everything without problems. It handles full dvd 720p mkv`s like a champ, even with dts sound. I hope DHD can, as in terms of power it could handle them too.

No, it can't. The DHD (as stated in the specifications) does not play mkv files out of the box. It's capable of decoding the video stream (which is h264) but the audio is ac3 which is a no go with the stock player. I tried vplayer but the results are disappointing - it's like a slowmotion video. What you can do is reencode the files copying the video stream and encoding the audio to aac, and saving it in mp4 format. It takes a couple of minutes for half hour movie, so it's no trouble at all. Still you might be careful what bitrates you encode since the DHD has to have some limit on that.

Thanks all for the feed back! Now I think that it's better for me to stay with my Vibrant for watching my HD videos (even if I like the 8Mpxls and dual led flash of the Desire HD). However it's just impossible to have the perfect smartphone isn'it? My dream: I hope some day we will have an Android phone with 12Mpxls 25 mm wide angle, Full HD recording and playback in any formats (specially flv for me), 4,3 inch or bigger screen with 1280X720 resolution and MEGA AMOLED!!!

I hear that divx is supported by the dhd out of the box, just wondered if anyone had managed to get divx / avi to play from a pc on the network using the 'connected media' option within videos... is this possible?
