So after having phone for 10 days now i find that it likes to unlock him self in my pocket, and if i go near my pocket with my fingers, or if its faced down so it touches my body, screen reacts , unlocks and does stupid stuff on phone.
My question now is: Is it possible to make some applicaiton, that would disable unlock on hard Menu button, and any on screen unlock patterns, but just phone can be unlocked by pressing optical trackball down(which is nearly impossible to press in pocket because of its nice positioning)
And please dont suggest me unlock patterns or pins, because i just dont like them.
I agree, i experience the same problems,
and I would suggest to this idea, that if it would be possible to implement ability remapping of the on/off key ( at least the time needed to push the key ) to turn screen on. because i experience turning the phone on in my pocket by selfpushing the on-off.
and to be honest, i like to use the screen with my fingers, not using the optical trackball at all an sometimes when i scroll with fingers, it interferes when my finger slips, or rests.
so my suggestion. to increase the time needed to push the on/off button to make screen active if possible
to make the optical trackball push make unlock the screen.
and an ability to disable optical trackball scroling ( not pushing, just disabled scrolling )
I had same problem , way i got around it,
put a lock pattern on your screen, but also add a widget to set the lock pattern on/off, that way when your going out with the phone in your pocket you set the lock to on and it wont do anything. when your at home, turn it off to get easy access.
Yeah, that works, but is not smooth.
hate the lock pattern.
the ideal case would be by on home page to disable on off button and.
with long push optical trackball to lock/unlock screen.
i dont understand how does it happen for you guys, do you never use power button to put it on sleep? i had this phone for pretty much a month now and it hever happened to me even when was wearin fairly tight jeans.
btw try lockpro app from the market it is paid though unfortunately

+1, never happened to me too, i guess you guys set the screen to not turn off? lol.....
even if the phone is ringing, i can still take it out of my pocket without it being answered....well i must say it's in a pouch too....maybe thats a solution to your problem....
I think it depends on how tight your trousers are maybe? if the button is pressed, and you pull it out the slider slides down??
Just a guess
Lol yea and if your pocket is actually your underpants, since my phone won't react to any touch with fabric between my skin and the screen.
My suggestion is that you grow some hair on your legs (or stop shaving), then you will have no problems.
And yea I have never had this problem in the 2 weeks or so of ownership. Although I do put them in my pocket where it is surrounded by a layer of cotton being the lining of the pocket, so that it is impossible for my skin to touch the screen. Not sure how your pockets work?
Use the unlock pattern.
Menu/settings/security/
this way it cannot unlock itself unless you draw the pattern, plus it helps if anyone picks up your desire wthout you knowing.
P.s I have never had an issue with the screen unlocking in my pocket, holder or anything else.
As i wrote on end of my strating post. I DO NOT LIKE unlock patterns. It doesnt prevent phone to turn on, and + its damn ugly.
To repeat ones more. I would like a way to disable screen ON using main power button, and set it so it only turns on by optical trackball click(not unlock directly, just to turn ON screen).
I'm using nice leather case for phone, but lots of times i push it in i turn on the screen. + with other in pocket random stuff which i explained..

Well it happens to me sometimes. If I press the lock button and then slide the phone up from my pocket while the screen is turned towards my leg, it unlocks.
The desire touch screen actually works trough thin fabric (like the one they make pants pockets from). Try putting your shirt between your finger and the screen. You'll see it'll work.

plus isn't there still a bug in 2.1 where if you put the unlock pattern in wrong 5 times you can't unlock your phone and it doesn't accept your google account password?

It is not possible. There was a big thread about this in the HTC Hero section. It needs the source code to be modified.
Not sure what you mean OP, my phone is in my pocket everyday and also inside a pouch, basically when i want to lock my phone i hit the power button and it will go into lock mode with the screen off, when i want to start it again, i press the power button and this displays a screen which is locked, i then have to move the slider down in order to unlock it, based on what you are saying i am finding it hard to imagine how it is unlocking in your pocket so can you confirm that your phone acts in the same manner as mine does and please explain more on how this is unlocking please.

Well i do know what OP means. I had my Desire one day and accidentally denied 4 out of 5 calls by taking the desire out of my pants. I make a habit of putting my phone up side down, screen facing inwards inside my pocket. So, on an incoming call the Desire shows the vertical slider, which is slided upwards by taking the phone out of your pocket, thus denying the call.
It's the most stupid design for a lock screen i've ever seen, and it could have been avoided if only one HTC engineer had made a few test calls to anothers Desire in his pants.
I installed Lock 2.0 which gives a horizontal slider on the lock screen, and which brings back the default accept and deny on-screen buttons. Still not perfect, but much better than the vertical slider.
+1 for the previous post. thx for the lock 2.0 app tip. I will download and try asap.
it does a lot of unwanted stuff in my pants...incl. self unlocking, call denying. etc..
shame that the unlock cant be easily recoded to the optical button.
Optical click unlock is already in the Cyanogen rom for desire.

I love my Piel-Frama case. I got the cowskin in blue.

However, the cover activates the touch screen. I was talking to my boss while walking down the street, and it made a note the call history that looked like a hand giving him the finger.
How do you guys deal with covers that touch the touchscreen? If I have a bluetooth headset, I want to walk and talk but the screen goes crazy!
this can't be an unusual problem. i must be missing something easy and simple. If your case covers the screen of your phone, and you are walking and talkng on your bluetooth wireless headset, doesn't the touchscreen get activated by your case!??!
Lock the device before putting it in the case..
Locking the device involves a password. I toggle the device off with the off button (not completely off -screen off) but it must be that the off button gets activated by the case as well, cuz often when I open it back up I have flipped screens and drawn notes by walking...am I the only one with this problem?

Buddy, read your Tytn's manual. Nobody advises you to lock your device with a password/number combination. That would be time-based. Many people here including me don't just press the off button to switch the display off but use the default (or third party app) devicelock functionality. You can even use this as a today screen plugin. Press it and once off your device will only accept input via on-button and an unlock-button afterwards on the todayscreen.
Of course people prevent their phones from making accindental phonecalls etc. You should have noticed that function from beginning on however, because this is a default today plugin when you're using your device for the very first time.
Good luck
OK, i had a hard case for the last 8 months and switched to a soft one. At some point I had taken out that lock button thing. It's kind of small to activate, but, I'll live with it
Press the menu button twice in quick succession. Bye bye lock screen
nice tip! Good for those times when you have ever so slightly damp fingers (which makes swiping on the screen so difficult!)
Don't you then have the pattern/password thing to deal with?
With the amount of online integration on this phone you've gotta be crazy to not protect it, surely? Or is the pattern unlock not that secure anyway? I have no onscreen or vibration indicators turned on, is that enough?
The pattern lock still comes up.
I don't have the pattern lock enabled.
What data do store on the hero that you're worried about some else getting their hands on it? And are you really that worried about losing it- I've actually superglued mine to my hand. No chances taken with my baby.

I don't have lock pattern and I only have to press menu once. I pressed it twice and the menu came up so I tried once and that worked too.

Press it once to turn screen on, then another time to remove swipe lock. If the screen is already on (in lock screen) then pressing menu twice will unlock then bring up the home screen (or whatever screen is behind the locked screen) menu.
If you press it in quick succession it will bypass the lock screen completely. Too quickly though, and you'll still see the lock screen.

*having my Hero in my pocket... 10 minutes later my stuff in my pocket (not THAT stuff) have managed to call up a long distance call...*
Do you still think the doublepressing of the Menu button is a good idea?
I don't.
HTC has definitly made a mistake here since it shouldn't be that easy to unlock the phone.
I've had this exact problem, people receiving mysterious calls at all times from my pocket! I'd been trying to work out how it happened, but that might be the answer
Hi All
On all my previous HTC devices when I was switchin the device off with power button none of other buttons were active. So pressing them did nothing. Only way to wake the device up was to press power button.
On Leo that is not the case. Now I remember that option was somewhere in windows but it appears to not be there anymore. When I have phone in pocket volume still works so it goes up and down. It also today somehow managed to unlocked it self when in poclet of my motorbike leathers including sliding the screen to unlock. Then it started calling hte wrong person while I was on m-way. Not a good thing.
Any idea where that option is?!
Only way i have found around this is to install S2U2 and set slide to answer as only way to answer phone. This disables buttons when there is a call. There is also a cab file you can install to set s2u2 as the default unlock screen.

If you are unlocking the lock screen, by sliding the slider all the way to one side, whilst it is in your pocket, then I suggest you get a priest to exorcise your pocket. This simply is not possible without your intervention.
I would suggest that you have come across the common (and very documented on this forum) problem of the lock screen not actually locking your device fully.
This is a known problem, with a 100% effective solution. Before you start a journey (which is obviously where this is most problematic for you) click start and then lock (the bottom left soft key). This re-enables the hardware lock. After that, it will work.

My pocket is ghost free, as it is made of leather and in rain can get a bit moist it does work a bit on the screen.
Also if I select start and click lock all buttons still work.

Yes, but you need to slide to unlock if the lock screen is working correctly. This will not happen by accident, in your pocket.
You can only unlock your phone with the hardware buttons if the known issue of the lock screen rears it's ugly head.
Doing what I said, before each journey, will make sure that you cannot unlock the screen with a simple button-press.
Since installing S2U2 a few days ago I've had even worse problems with ghost unlocks than before.
Previously the only issue was accidentally cutting calls off, but with S2U2 I had a text from a friend on Friday asking if I was drunk. Somehow, whilst locked in my pocket it unlocked and sent a gibberish sms!
Then today, it also somehow unlocked in my pocket and dialled my mum!
I'm just glad I wasn't playing Call of Duty when it happened or she would have just heard "Sh1t!!! You cheating f***!!! WTF??? You..... FFS!!!!" etc
But seriously - I love S2U2 from previous winmo phones but it's made my HD2 worse so I've uninstalled it tonight sadly.

Well it took me all but 45 min to realise my problem is still there with s2u2 but other things are even worse so back to stock lock.
I am quite certain that option must still be in there. It was a tick box that stated lock all buttons except power button.

No - I'm the same exactly. I just was trying to be polite so I didn't get told off here!
i`m currently playing and tweaking my 3 day old HD2. Shame I got one, now my Rhodium and Kaiser are oldish and forgotten =) What a wonderful device the HD2 is.
So far, I´ve managed to tweak all the things I wanted, except for one: in all other devices, I can access the system page and a "keylock" option there, so I can configure the device to wake up ony if the power button is pressed while locked. There is no keylock option in the HD2, and while in the pocket, buttons keep getting pressed and the screen is turning on. I want to reduce that to as few times as possible (since battery life seems to be a problem with the HD2).
Any ideas ? Guess they removed the keylock option simply because the HD2 does not have a power button... anyway, waking up the device with a specific key (only) would be nice.
tia
I'm looking for the same thing. Please advice!
/R
Add me
to the list that would like this option. My HD2 is always being turned onin my pocket and its seriously reducing the bettery life!!!
ok... bump. My day ended up with a dead phone. The screen turned on so many times that the cellphone got warm... more than once.

... it does... and it works. Problem is not locking or remaining locked, but the fact that the screen turns on even locked.
I mean, if you lock the phone, there is only 1 way to unlock it (by sliding the unlock button on screen). But hitting *any* button (except for the volume) brings the display up. Since the buttons are elevated, it´s not that difficult to keep hitting the buttons while it is in your pocket.
The end result is that the screen remains lit, wasting battery. It would be nice if, once locked, only 1 single button would bring the screen on. That would reduce the chance of turning it on by accident.
With my Kaiser and Rhodium, both have a power button. Once the screen is locked, the only key that will bring it to life is the power button itself (that is somewhat difficult to hit by accident). But the Leo does not have a power button.
Would the leather case solve that? I know it's more impractical but if anything saves battery it would be worth it.

Unfortunately, no... In fact, the standard leather case (that came with it) is so tight that if you put the phone with the buttons first, they get pressed.

Yeah just tried, don't think it will loosen any more either. I guess you need a jacket pocket with plenty of space, a trouser/jean pocket would be fine until you sit down.
Well, didn´t find any app that would help me do this trick. In fact, a simple app that enable us to configure the key that wakes up the phone after locking, could solve the problem. Was thinking about changing to the volume down key (guess it is one of the hardest to accidentally press, like when in a pocket).
As a temporary measure, if you use the leather slip case it came with, put the phone in upside down so that the USB is pointing out the open end.
I've bought a leather executive flip case that stops accidental button pressing. But it's not everyone's cup of tea to make the phone bulkier in the pocket.

Bump - someone must know the answer - I hope!
Just to share my experience.
I never use the leather case. It is too tight to squeeze in. And the HD2 is not as fragile as the other models. However if you use a screen protector, then you may find that it is pretty easy to scratch and dent the screen protector, which is rather visibly annoying.
As for keylock, I think TouchLockPro is rather good. It can't stop the end button from waking up the phone. Nobody can, because it is the only method to wake up an HD2. However, you can set the phone to go back to sleep in say 5 seconds. Or you can keep it always locked when it is dark (in your bag or pocket).
i have searched around and haven't found quite what im looking for. i find my phone screen is turning on in my pocket and sometimes unlocks. i hear the sound of it unlocking all the time just from the pressure against my leg. i keep it so my screen is faced in because of what i do for work i could easily smash it against something. i have bought a case that helps prevent the side power button and the home button from being pressed but still happens quite often.
what i am looking for is an app/mod that will keep the screen from coming on when the proximity sensor detects that it is in my pocket. this would need to work regardless of whether home/power buttons are pressed or a notification wakes it.
if anyone knows of something like this for our phones i would much appreciate it.
Don't have that app/mod, but you may be interested in this one instead. Killing the home button's ability to wake up the phone. I did this on my S4, although you only need to modify the one file, the gpio-key.kl. You need to be rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1702675
Thanks ill give it a try and see if it cuts down on screen on time. I have noticed that ill get notifications and phone calls that will turn the screen on and then simply walking will be enough to swipe and unlock. This screen is much more sensitive than my old epic.
