"OFFICIAL" apps-to-sd coming "soon". - G1 General

http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1151
Posted a few minutes ago.....

Some of you may remember from when the GN1 was launched, during the press conference, there was indication that google would be implementing this at some point.
It has now been confirmed within their issue tracker.
And with the pending release of Android 2.2... and the upcoming conference... this may be only a few *days* off.

I thought nexus one didn't need apps2sd?
512mb internal storage? Why would you need apps2sd with that much?

Some people *cough*non-android users*cough* seem to think that Android apps are all 100mb each and you can only install a few. This will finally calm those masses, and help the odd person that installs 600 apps.

This has NOTHING to do with GN1.
It is for ANDROID, which is NOT limited to a single device.

It should be in the next available release after 2.2

That isn't all for apps. Only 190mb can be used for apps. I ran out after about 100-125 apps were installed.

it might as well be seeing as they usually only support certain versions of android and those version are only available on certain devices.

I know this, I was using Nexus as an example. After Sapphire, it seems like apps2sd isn't really needed. However, I never knew it was limited to so little room of that for apps. With my Sapphire I have about 100 apps (more than I really ever use) and still have 170mb internal memory. Thats why I was like, wtf, why now? Not sure how much is limited to apps on Sapphire, though.
Edit:

Google supports ANDROID, you want to speak with the manufacturers and carriers who are the ones that manage what updates make it to which phones.
Google is releasing this for ANDROID, what phones it makes it to is not Google's decision.

It is needed for good game development

100MB-150MB ramhack

This is a quick blurb that will make a lot of people happy. Remember the ramhack for the G1? Well, the Nexus One only has 218MB memory available to Linux, despite having a whopping 512MB total. Even the Motorola Droid, with 256MB total, has more RAM available to Linux! I asked about this, and romainguy explained on the Android IRC channel:
<coolbho3k> How can the Droid have 256MB of RAM but 230+MB memfree, while the Nexus has 512MB RAM but only 218MB memfree?
<@romainguy_> there's a limitation in the kernel
<@romainguy_> next update should give you 100 or 150 MB back
<coolbho3k> Very nice!!!
<@romainguy_> swetland can tell you more

There we go. A "memhack" kernel update in the next Nexus One OTA should give us an additional 100-150MB RAM. Who wants to try to compile a kernel that does this now?
Did u ask him when the next update is coming out.
is that an official IRC channel? with people that actually work on it or what?

Yes it is, and Romain Guy works for Google.
I wondered what happened to all that memory! I still don't understand why 2 1 is taking so much.
Wonder if that will correct the slight and infrequent animation studdering people sometimes see when moving between home screens and scrolling.
That is awesome, I was so happy to have 512 mb RAM it sucks to hear they dont use half of it, glad to hear they plan to fix that. So this thing is going to be even smoother? Also, we are talking about an official ota from google correct? I wonder why they released it with the limitation...

This is a limitation of the 2.6.29 kernel.
The 2.6.32 kernel fixes this issue, but I guess they haven't worked out all the bugs yet.

Is this like the PS3 where, at launch, they reserved more ram for its OS. Then they released more back to apps (games) with firmware updates Anyway, good news to everyone!
Is this the correct chat room?
http://irc2go.com/pjirc/?net=freenode&room=android
So is there an eta of this official patch from google?
well, what we do want the RAM for, yah for the OS than APPS but whats the deference between the OS and APPs ? well it is complicated as every APP will be running inside a VM made and managed by the OS
What I think : it doesn't matter, we want a good working OS that's fast and nice not free RAM ,that's just there not to be used for any good. If they at Google change it let them do that!
more RAM = less often apps have to be killed to make space for newly launched apps = less processing killing those apps and also more apps stored on memory for quick on-demand launch.

Romain_Guy told me there is no ETA for the update but it is going to be included in the next update, whenever that may be. Hopefully not too long !
hope they fix a few other things aswell, i love the phone but there are a few aggravating software issues.

64MB Extra Memory on Nexus One

Hi, All
Don't you think it would be sweet, if there was Radio released like the HD2 Update that unlocked 64MB Extra memory for the Nexus One.
The comparison with the Desire would be finished.
JAW$
It would be nice, but it's already so fast I don't think it would make a difference for the majority of Nexus One users.

Dont understand why you need it. Just looked at my phone with 19 processes running and 200 Mb avail. At any given time I never have less than 100Mb free mem. Does the Sense UI use more memory? Is that why you think we need more?

Sense UI doesn't use much more I usually have 100MB to 200MB free with Sense UI. Also my phone feels much smoother with Sense UI rather than stock. On top of all that, we don't even have all our 512MB unlocked. I think its like 395MB.

Where are the apps?

I understand that logmein is coming, but where is weatherbug? Does anyone have the xoom version? I download it from the market and it is identical to the version that I have on my DX. Is it out yet? When is it coming? Etc.
I dunno, but this is definately the place to ask.

Weatherbug for honeycomb is not out yet. Its still in beta stage and can't be downloaded.
Logmein for Android works fine for now.
I haven't had too many problems for most apps. Not ideal but they work for the moment.

Guys, this is the first Honeycomb device that came out yesterday. The full SDK just came out 3 days ago. Its gonna take a little time before we see tablet apps. Just give it a little time! they will come.

Especially considering that Google implemented the "Fragments UI" idea in the latest SDK. From my understanding, this will allow the devs to make apps that work with both tablets and phones, where the UI will scale to different sizes for the different areas, instead of having 2 different apps.

Ok I'm gonna post a new thread devoted to this, I'm SURE someone on XDA must have found a leaked version of this beta apk, because not having it straight away is unacceptable . This is by FAR the app that I've been looking forward to with the Xoom. I'd gladly trade Flash for the next few months before the Weatherbug app! (hate me if you want, whatever)

Adding in the Fragments UI concept is only a few limited lines of code to allow scaling. Doesn't mean that the size of the apps will necessarily be any bigger. Don't forget, theres always Apps2SD
If having scalable UI means that the apps will be slightly bigger but completely functional, it's worth it.

Agreed, however this one is a different story, as it is an app that IS already in the Market, but some sort of glitch (either at the Weatherbug end or the Google end of things) isn't allowing it to be downloaded and installed. After all, as far as the Weatherbug site is concerned, this beta app *should* be fully available for download at this moment. At any rate I just sent an email in to the folks at Weatherbug as I'm quite sure they'd want to know about this so that they can communicate with Google to sort out the problem and make sure their app is fully available.

64GB Micro SD-Cards out!

I'm sure it'll be expensive as hell when it first arrives, but KingMax is releasing a 64GB Micro SD-Card.
There shouldn't be any compatibility issues, since I'd be formatting that as ext4 for use in my Xoom anyway.
Thought the max for compatibility was 32GB.

Pretty sure that's just a filesystem issue with FAT; since I'll be formatting as ext4 that won't be an issue unless the kernel itself can't issue the block commands, and that's something that's readily fixed.

IOW, oh, I'm sure we'll think of something!
Hmmm... I am not sure the stability of handling 64GB since it was stated to support up to 32 GB.
I have a dell streak 7 which say supporting it up to 32GB, but my system got unstable whenver I got my SDCard in for a while. (only for a while, not immediately it will be unstable).
It restarts randomly and dead on sleep when I have the SDCard on. I tried to go back to stock on roms and it still happened until I gave up and took out the sdcard.
Based on this experience, I would rather think Android system's capability of handling large external SDCard is not perfect/stable. I may just hold a cautious but certainly happy view on this news =)

... and as a kernel dev, I think you just had a crap SD-Card
The device should handle any card regardless of size really, even without ext4 (the volume limit of FAT is something like 2Tb).
I read somewhere that Android didn't support ext4 on SD card without a custom kernel, is this correct? Seems odd considering the kernel must have ext4 support to read/write to the internal filesystems.
32 GB is usually mentioned by any device because that's the largest size that was actually tested with. Once they validate that 64 GB cards work (which they probably will), they will probably update the official specs.
Just a validation thing.

Yeah, there's probably a misunderstanding somewhere in what was written or read. For all intents and purposes, our internal storage (which has two filesystems on ext) is not much more electrically than a soldered-in SD-Card.

the answer is obviously yes. sense 3 with 2.3.4 is gonna be stock on the mt4gslide so once thats leaked you best believe we will have it. granted the mt4g slide has dual core processor and 200 more ram, so it can handle a bit more, you best believe our phones can still handle it, it wont take much more to run 2.3.4 than 2.3.3 which the mt4g already handles with great speeds. so just give it a month or so before an official build leaks and we will have it.
Almost the only difference between 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 is the Google Framework.
You can just flash the latest one (which is integrated into most ROMs by now, all those supporting Gtalk video have to do it), and you'll get whatever you really need 2.3.4 for.

No, the MT4G has 768MB. Check every online spec site. Heck even check the box the thing came in...
There's a command line you can enter in Terminal that says something about ~626, but that does not report total system RAM. I'm sure someone else can explain that better, but the MT4G does indeed have 768MB of total RAM.

He probably just didn't realize that the phone allocates a portion of the RAM out of default. I'm on CM7 and it shows 309 RAM used out of my 626 available. That's probably where he's getting that number from.

You can't have it showing right - because currently the Gtalk app was only built and adjusted for Nexus S, and was hacked to work on other phones. As such, it's not adjusted properly to be running on all the phones with different camera libs, and that includes Sense camera libs. Sense ROMs with 2.3.4 will cure it, if they'll have Talk app - which they might not.

Even when I had the Nexus S if your phone wasn't on stock you still had to find a work around to getting video chat to work on g-talk, then there was the issue of having it work on 3G and not just wifi.
