i was pretty happy when i showed up at a corporate store today to ask about my FILTHYYYYYY trackball (it was yellow, ew) and pay my bill; and they replaced it with a nice white shining orb like right out the box! and even better, i have no insurance or ANYTHING, they did it free of charge and in less than ten minutes. yay!
question though. so my phone is shut off for the next few hours...forgot to pay my bill, and calls and sms arent working. they said it would take 2-4 hours for my to get service back, anyone ever have something similar happen? question is, how long did it take for you to get your service back?
and now something strange. when i realized my service was off, i found that i still have data. i am able to text through gv, browse, market, the whole nine yards. is this normal? lol!
thanks guys :-D
yeah, normal. For some reason they leave data on. Service came back near immediately for me though.
Yea they say 2-4 hours just in case it really does take that long. Normally its pretty instant, like 10-15mins.

grr. i think this is that case.
Well, you can atleast text through GV. Maybe you can call through GV? Or if you can, set up some type of SIP dialer which doesn't require minutes.

I don't know, but I think there is something called Gizmo5 that can be setup so that you can effectively eliminate the need for a voice plan, since all your calls are routed through data.

i just talked to sprint. they said they were waiting for the payment to be posted, which is JUUUST was...they said to turn off for 1 minute, reboot, and service should be restored.
cross your fingers, rebooting now!!
service is back! yay!
also, soemthing wierd about my trackball...the little round chrome part that usually supports it was replaced with a black rubber one. is this standard for new trackball and trackball housing?
its just, i liked the chrome :-( now it akward looking with the black surrounding the tb :-(
Yes that is normal..
Because as a service tech,
A) The Hero is on the Do Not Touch List.. So it is up to the experience of the tech to decide if he really wants to risk taking the phone apart, because if it breaks, he's gonna be liable for it..
B) The Hero is on the Do Not Touch List.. So you have to buy 3rd party parts to do those repairs.. Sprint will not send parts for a phone you are not allowed to repair, so you have to buy from vendors and those parts are normally different in quality.

Afternoon guys n girls,
Just a quick question, can someone confirm the X1 battery cover is aluminium and not titanium etc.
Mine is scratched to hell and I wouldn't mind getting it re-anodised purple or blue providing it is alu.
Thanks
try using the wonders of physics!
go get a magnet and test it
Have tired that already, it's not magnetic so that rules out steel... just wasn't sure if titanium is magnetic or not.
google power ("titanium magnetic")
Doesn't really help though, some people said it is magnetic whilst others said it isn't... there is not a clearly defined answer.
I'd rather not try re-anodise it and get it burnt to **** and THEN find out it isn't alu.
it's definitively not titanium..... the fu.... chassis is build in cheapest plastic but the accu cover is build with titanium......häh
im pretty sure its alu. the whole phone is made of it, why spend more money ona titanium battery cover?
I don't know, I just recall Nokia using Titanium on some of the phones like the...8800?
Ah well, anodising here we come.
good luck
whatever this actualy does hehe but screens are appriciated
Well it's taken a battering so re-anodising it will put all the colour back, get rid of the horrible grey patches.

I was thinking the same. Silver ftw. But on the pics it seems pretty bad handled even for a black X1.
just the battery cover. the rest seems fine.
but i must admit ... the batter cover get scratchy so freckin easy. i just wear it in my pocket or sometimes laying it on my desk. yet i got scratches on it.
i think my silver x1a is made of stainless. i had a hard time drilling thru doing the battery cover reset mod. i was using small new drill bit to drill a pilot hole and it wasnt easy. took me about 5 to 10 minutes to drill thru.
it's aluminum... otherwise, they would have bragged about using titanium in their phones..
besides, the nokia 8800 carbon is made of carbon fiber and titanium and retails for around 1000-1200 bucks.

I don't know what drills you use, but with a common HSS drill it should not take longer than 20 seconds to drill through and make a fine champfer -carbide should do the trick in half of the time.

The rest of the phone is 100% fine, it's just that I always put it down on my desk / table and tend to slide it rather than picking it up and moving it so the back has taken a hammering.
Just spoken to my mate who does anodising and he said he'll beadblast it first then re-anodise it for me... mmmmm blue or purple, that is the question now.

I'd prefer purple with a black phone.
Blue would be better for the silver one.
yeah thats what i thought untill i started drilling.

I must confess to total amazement here - normally, I'm extremely good-mannered ... but:
IRON (Fe) is magnetic, together with it's 3+ oxides (Fe3O4 etc)
TITANIUM is a completely different element
I just can't believe it ...
it's been 24 hours since i used my evo, i'm still having a hard time shaking the feeling. yesterday on my way back from lunch to the office i parked in front to drop some things off, since i had a few things on my front pockets i didn't want to put my phone there, so i figure i'll put it on my back pocket for now. after dropping off the things, i jump back in my truck and i heard a funny sound, all i could do is look up and sigh hoping everything was ok, i pulled out my phone and everything seem fine at the time. when i got back inside my office i woke up my phone and that is when i discover my lcd was crushed and nothing was really visible. since is rooted im not sure if bb's black tie will still cover accidental, cuz im sure as soon as they fire it up they'll know and i'm afraid it will end up been rejected. before i send it off they asked if that was the only thing that was wrong i said yes, he goes on to tell me that will be the only thing they'll be doing and if there is another issue they will have to send it in again. i sure hope that's the only thing they do. if they rejected i found a few places where i can get it for $74.00 or so and i'll replaced my self. hope this goes quick, having to go back to my pre doesn't cease the feeling

you still wouldn't be able to replace that under warranty since it's physical damage. The only way you would get it replaced is through insurance, and insurance doesn't give a **** about rooted or non rooted.

unless they replace the screen, then they won't be able to figure it out. It would require taking it apart even more and checking gpu and ****. And i'm pretty sure they won't take it apart in the store. You'll most likely be fine, unless it gets flagged at their repair center or w/e.

what shows broken is the lcd passed the touch screen. I jump inside my truck so i guess that cracked it. when is asleep you can't tell there is anything wrong!
Thanks for the mounds of logic.
They cant tell the phone is rooted unless they plugged it in with usb and ran a view commands. Which is extremely rare for anyone to even do and they would just be doing it to be a **** if they did. I HIGHLY doubt they would even try to find out if you rooted it when you accidentally broke the screen. Its not like it was a problem like bluetooth or wifi not working (then rooting it could be the root of the problem). I personally wouldnt worry about it at all.
If it was Sprint you would just pay $100 and they send you a new one, sprint never sees it and all is well. I dont how best buy works.
You are correct there is no replacement cost. I work there as a second job. If it can be repaired they will send it off. If not they replace it with a new one. It is a great plan. The other issue I have no idea how they will handle it but I would not fret over it I believe you will be fine.

Best buy doesn't charge $150 for repair or replacement. They do however change a $150 deposit on loaner phones while yours has been sent out for repair. You get a refund when you return the loaner.

I keep my EVO in my back pocket also, and I've only come close to doing this once. But since I keep it there out of habit, its become second nature to take it out or move it to a front pocket whenever I sit down. I don't even think about it.
I can defiantly see how this could happen to someone who doesn't normally keep it there.
Best of luck op. I'm thinking black tie should cover you ok.

Thought some people here can use a laugh. My girl wanted to bring her epic to the sprint store due to some issues she has had, mainly battery.
We were greated by a woman who had clearly no idea what she was talking about. My girl had ADW launcher installed as her home.
The lady told her the reason for her rapid battery drain was due to that ( from 100% to 50% in three hours of no use.)
I told her in "about phone" then in battery you can clearly see that it used 3% of her battery since the phone was turned on which has been awhile.
Her reply was that app your showing me is unofficial and was downloaded form the market and infact the battery percentage I was showing her also is screwing up her phone.
Also the woman also stated anything off the market is unsupported and should be installed on the phone.

Sounds like my boss at the Sprint store I work at in Leola... According to her you need to turn Gmail off any type of sync time frame at all because even if you have it set to only check every 8 hours it still checks ever .5 seconds and kills your battery in 3 hours. Funny my EVO is set to auto retrieve at all times, I get a day and a half battery regularly...
Sad thing is as a job hunter, i apply at these places and never get a call back from the interview despite these dimwitted folks.
I usually kill time at the SPCS store on 42nd and 6th before i dip into the subway and it takes a lot for me not to interject most times (i find it rude) when i hear some of them explaining stuff to customers that make little to no sense.
I also notice the ones in the mall have mostly female eye-candy staff manning the front. Me i look like Shrek, maybe that's why i never make the cut.

I didn't like the one I had, when back to att and told them that I want to check the display unit and it had the same issue, I asked if it's possible to check a third device to make sure and even the third device (new, out of the box) had the same thing...

i didn't even realize that until now.
feels fine to me and i'm sure there is some reasoning behind it
I've seen it mentioned before. Not sure how prevalent it is, but mine is not like that. Not sure if it's just a defective design or quality control issues...
Admittedly, mine is not perfectly straight but it's not something that I would have noticed if someone hadn't mentioned it or asked me to look.
Not every atrix is like this. I've been through a few and the one I have right now is lined up correctly.
Most also have an issue with the edges on the sides of the device not lining up. The left side is more flush with the glass than the right side.
Also, volume rocker is very loose on some of them (my current has this problem)
Definitely some build quality issues. I wouldn't bother returning your Atrix for something so minor, especially when the new one you get will probably have the same problem, and perhaps more problems.
It isn't "broken", that whole portion is the power button, and as such has some play to it. Since the read head is embedded in the button, it has to accommodate the connection which is applying torsion and is causing the tilt. This is fairly common with any button that has embedded components.

There's always a reasoning behind something. In this case, sloppy assembly comes to mind.

OP: You must have asperbergers to notice and worry about something so small and mundane.
If they all have it, and they all seem to work, then why the **** would you say that it's broken? Maybe, JUST MAYBE, it was designed like that!
Question is what will happen after a couple of months down the road ? I don't want to get refurbished unit, right now I can trade in for new unit ....
It doesn't seem to be loose though ...
My first atrix's button seemed pretty solid but it was rebooting by itself so I exchanged it. The new ones button has a little give but works fine.

It's absolutely normal to have that tilt because, first of all, it's a button and all buttons will have some play, and second, the fingerprint scanner inside uses a ribbon cable to transmit the data and it just so happens that the cable attaches to the side that is lower. So, the reason it is "seated" like that is because the ribbon cable is sort of holding it down a little tighter than the other side which is being help up by the button mechanism.
You can see the cable here:
http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/NKu22l1eZ6Oc3FM2.huge
Mine is like that, but a little worse, the whole button seems recessed as well as slanted. My coworker's phone is perfect. button is flush on all sides. Mine started out flush and has deteriorated. I'm watching it for another week, and if it continues to get worse i'll decide what to do.
It also seems my button will stick in now and then, causing issues waking the phone up.
I didn't return the device and I don't think I will ... I was just surpriced that all 3 devices have the same issue, so I wanted to check with you guys and see if it's "meant to be" like that and motorola designed it like that or if it's just the batch that my area's att store got

lol, well, I can't deny that I have some social awkwardness, but I don't think I'm that bad, I think that it's normal to check every little detail of something that expensive ... for the record, I don't have an SSN (I had to pay $500 deposit) and English isn't my first language, I could have used the word "broken" wrong.

I didn't return the device and I don't think I will ... I was just surpriced that all 3 devices have the same issue, so I wanted to check with you guys and see if it's "meant to be" like that and motorola designed it like that or if it's just the batch that my area's att store got

Don't feel too bad. I usually find a few things "wrong" with everything I purchase, it's almost unavoidable. The best you can do is figure out what you can live with.
wow mine looks like that too!
Mine works just fine. My wife hates it because now she can't play with my phone.

Mine is like that too. I've had my phone for 2 weeks and just noticed yesterday. I thought it was broken, but after finding this thread I'm fine with it. It does not feel weird, click weird, or ever stick. After seeing the photo a few posts above re: the ribbon cable, it makes complete sense.
Maybe the guys who have Atrixes (Atrices? lol) with flush buttons are the ones with defective units, LOL

Eheh my wife too

So I got my phone today and low and behold I have some serious (at least to me) blemishes and scratches on the back. Some pics below. I know they may not seem too bad but come on, this is a brand new phone, and unexceptable if you ask me. So I actually go to my nearby ATT store to see if they have stock already so they can swap it out and they don't have any yet. You could see it in the eyes of the workers that they hadn't seen one yet. Borderline oogling over it.
Anyways, they say call ATT and they'll send me another. I call and low and behold they CAN send me a replacement (not overnight mind you, I'd have to pay for that), but as I had to remind them, there is a backorder for it so they couldn't tell me when I'd get it. All this time I wouldn't be able to activate the phone. I say screw it, I'll keep it but you gotta give me something here. All they can do open a customer credit report and see if it goes through. Suffice it to say.....I'm pissed.

Yeah this is a total case of WTF. Must have happened in the flashing process when they added all their carrier crap.
Wow. Was it shipped in bag full of rocks?
Thats how mine is from GPlay! Not as bad as yours but the same type of marks.... Seems like it was slid around and there was a bunch of dust/debris in the box on the phone.. I called them up right after I saw and they were gonna set me up with a new replacement but there is a problem with there system with that apparently...:roll eyes: So I have to wait for them to fix that then get in contact with me to set up the replacement... Im using this one in a case in the mean time but it definitely shouldn't fly to get one that looks this way!
Looks like someone was skate boarding on it before shipping. Lol I would return it. There is no fu#king way I pay over $700 for a screwed up phone.
Probably happened while they were tattooing that sweetass globe on the bottom. Well worth the sacrifice, IMO.

Hahaha this comment had me rollin as well. Sorry about your phone OP. Hopefully they give you some type of credit or something.
That valiant phone fought tooth and nail and tried to resist being tramp stamped. In the end the handset torturers won

How is that AT&T's fault? Lol.
"A Lenovo company..."
I would try blast them Motorola and ATT on social media. No way you fork over that much cash money for A defectove unit. I also suggest you QC the camera carefully. It may have got the lense.
Motorola QC issue.
I was at my tmobile store when they unboxed their demo unit and it had the same nonsense. We considered that maybe they just purposely sent the ****ty ones to stores for demo purposes. Hope this is not a widespread issue
That's what you get for purchasing a phone from the devil.

They would have touched it last when flashing their splash screenand doing the logo on the back. But a previous commenter said his gplay device was the same. I would look at how the phone fits in the retail packaging. Does it have room to move around at all, is what i would be looking at.

I think it has some room to move because there doesn't seem to be anything keeping it in place or anything protective it has to sit on. Its just sitting on indent of the phone with the documentation. I think it happened during shipping possibly especially if it was man handled it could bounce around and scuff up but idk? i don't see how sliding on cardboard could cause marks like that.
Im also still waiting on Gplay to reply and fix there system to get me a new replacement...
Did you have any issues getting AT&T to initiate the return? This is ridiculous, mine has this too.

AT&T wouldn't have done it themselves, just semantically speaking.
They would have made a deal with the OEM (Motorola) to make the modifications on their behalf before packaging.
Not defending AT&T or anything, of course.
