My nexus restarts when i take a picture - Nexus One General

Well the camera is slow and acting weird, but even more weird is that it started to restart everytime after i take a picture.
I'm with 8GB microSD card from my old htc HD (which i don't know which class is and if it might be slow and that causes the problem? )
Did that happen to anyone? Or at least do you know what's the class of the factory htc hd card and if that could be possibly an issue?
p.s.
i dont have any other cards handy at the moment to test a bit

I've heard that its good to have class 6 and above. Anything less is creating stability problems for the nexus.

That's completely false. Google wouldn't be shipping the phone with a class 2 card if that were true and that's not what's causing the problem. I don't know what is but best bet is to re flash your phone.

the nexus factory card is class 2?
I guess the factory htc HD cars is also class 2? Can someone confirm that, since i can't find info online.
is there another way to format the card from the phone, other than the "Format SD card" option in settings, which considering how fast "formats" i guess it's just erasing the fat table?
And do you think that unproper formatting might be a problem for android? This is card from a windows mobile phone.
That's where i'm coming from too, so excuse me for the dumb questions

Yes, it's a class 2, 4gb SD Card. I should know since I own a Nexus One. My brother had a memory card formatted by a blackberry but used it just fine on his Moto Cliq but your card may be corrupt. You could use Windows to do a full format and then just pop it back in and it will work. Just right click and click format, I believe.
Also there is no other way to format it via your phone and you can find out your card class by looking at the card there should be a small number with or without a circle around it, that's the class.

Have you called support? They have a knowledge DB that might have something about it. If it's not rooted, you can easily request a repair/replacement, they'll send you a new one.

Now it just goes black screen and after a while says that can't connect to the camera. Seems that i have dead camera and doesnt seem like can be fixed by software....
ah and i dont even have a warranty

You have a one year warranty with Google. Call HTC and explain, they'll help.

yeah well im not even in the countries where they sell, and waiting for the phone to go there and back will be at least a month....

AHH NO! 2nd memory card gone

Ok, so when i first got the TD2 i bought a 16gb mem with it, but about 2 weeks in, it just wiped my memory card and made it useless, trying it on the computer, on the phone, even in a camera brought nothing up. I was hoping it was the memory card faulty. So i bought a new 16gb and it's gone and done it again. Just randomly, whilst using coreplayer to watch some blue, my phone froze. so i did a soft reset and now my mem card has disappeared. all my apps saved it it have gone, all my pics...just everything
what the hell is going on?
I use spb shell, luckily that was saved to my phone so i stil have it, but half the apps on it don't work now
I installed Advanced Config 3.3 and turned on SD-card powermanagement... shortly after that I lost one 8GB sandisk card ... Diamond2 could not see it anymore. My PC could not see it anymore.... Maybe it was the Advanced Config setting that somehow broke it or maybe it was coincidence?? ****ty thing is I didn't make a backup so lost a lot of nice pictures on it...
If you use activesync, you would need to configure WM device center to NOT replace items on the device. Switch that to replace items on desktop.
If its not that, then maybe shell is the culprit. Or advanced config.

Nope, it's not just deleted data. In my case the SD-card is really broken. I cannot open it in any device anymore.
I had this problem with my Xperia twice, and I'm far from convinced that the TD2 is any more stable.
I haven't tracked down what is causing it, but I have never had any problems with SD cards in all my years with PalmOS or Symbian devices. I think it is just a 'feature' of Windows Mobile because the system is unstable and prone to crashes which corrupt the cards.

Well corruption can usually be repared by a format or something like that but in my case the card isn't even recognized by the system anymore, it just won't show up.'
this has happened to me too. twice!

Really? Talk about 'give a dog a bad name'. If you knew a little more you'd soon realise it has zip zero and sweet buggerall to do with WM, which is stable, flexible and reliable, though the UI is admittedly rather dated, and everything to do with HTC's implementation.

Yep twice with me as well
once with normal TF3D and once with SPB shell
Just totally broken my card...tried using 2 usb readers and 2 computers with it...nothing
tried putting it into an sd card converter and putting into 2 cameras...nothing
Be warned people!
Back up your stuff! TD2 looks like it enjoys corrupting micro sd cards and making you pay for more
perhaps HTC has a contract with Sandisk or something
Keeps sandisk bringing in profits in this troubled time of recession

Our opinions differ it seems, but unless someone finds the actual cause we will never know the truth.
My apologies for not knowing much - I am trying to learn WM after many years on other platforms. All I have to go on is my personal experiences with 4 WM devices (all originating from HTC), and those experiences are not great. WM has a bad name in my eyes, from direct personal experience. Maybe I am maligning it falsely if the true cause of the problems I experience lies elsewhere...I am willing to have an open mind.
I am several £££ out of pocket, having lost 2 16GB cards to these devices - a problem I have only ever suffered with HTC/WM. Given that HTC is the leading manufacturer of WM devices it does not reflect well on either them or the OS platform they are working with that they cannot create stable bug-free systems.
Are these genuine memory sticks?
I work in repairs and I have had a number of HTC devices along with others too that have had this issue.
It turned out that on average, 7/10 devices had fake memory sticks from reputable vendors who were duped.
1/10 were corrupt memory cards just from use/standard wear and tear or just corrupt out of factory.
and the last 1/10 was a faulty memory card reader on the device -
I had an original SANDISK 8GB micro-SD card in it. I now have a 6GB in it which still is OK for now... But backups will be made. I am going to get me another 8GB card and possible trade in the broken one (warranty)... these things should not brake this soon.. the card was 3 weeks old!! If the second one also breaks than maybe it's a D2 problem??
edit: I have to notice that it broke down I did turn on the SD-card powermanagement save option from Advanced Config.... maybe that's the cause??
I've had my 16gb card in the phone since April 15th when I got my unit...not one issue touch wood so touch its the phone ... if anything, it might be your specific unit but I would still bet on the card itself
As an example, I got a 32GB USB stick from Kingston - so not exactly a small make
Within a week, I lost 31.8GB and was left with 2mb.
Data has gone and is not retrievable. Kingston have now tested and diagnoised the memory is corrupt and unfixable so they are replacing it.
So it can happen
An advice: Whenever you do a operation such as backup or something, do not charge your phone!! That really hurt your SD card....

what do you mean? Like no charge when on activesync? I can't see
why that would hurt the card.
Did you guys format your mem cards before using them?
I have a stack of SanDisk MicroSD cards (256mb, 1gb, 2gb, 4gb hc, 8gb hc and 16Gb hc). My 16Gb and 4GB cards both had faults (the 16gb one wouldn't format and the 4gb one just didn't work and wasn't even recognised as being in my phone or card reader).
SanDisk have a 5 year warranty, so I registered all of my cards on their website, reported the fault and had them replaced. The whole process took about 4 weeks, but they sent me brand new 16gb and 4gb cards.
Sometimes flash media just fails...
maybe you all should get transcend.. they give you lifetime warranty...
Yep, but I lost my reciept ... and I need that to trade in.. But yesterday a bought a new one... maybe I use the new reciept to trade in the old.. cards are the same size en look the same.. so i'll probably get away with that.
Me too - lost the 8 GB card in my TD2 last week, it's completely unreadable now, can't be formatted, etc. Never happened to me before. Hope this isn't s.th. serious with the TD2...

nothing todo with how old it is, its todo with random read/write speeds, for instance, most newer cards with high class values like 6 or 10 use some odd mechanics that increase sequential speeds but lower random speeds, that is the issue, if the card at any point isnt able to give the spec needed then it has issues, in some cases its only minor in others it wont even be detected.

evidently not, op stated the SD card was the issue and is now fixed when he replaced it.
interesting - I've now tried two WP7 ROMs on my UK HD2 - LEO70 and XBmod-WP7-V1.04b, with MAGLDR1.13 and 2.08.HSPL and 2.15.50.14 radio and got stuck in a boot loop with both.
The only thing that's fixed it was removing the SIM and both worked fine with any SD card I try. Doesn't make for a great phone though.....
Anyone got any thoughts?
EDIT - turns out it was my old T-Mobile SIM that was the problem. Have since tried two newer SIMs and both work fine with no bootloop!

lol whats with these bold statements?
how do you know its overheating? where did the overheating comment come from? the OP didnt say as anything to the sort
you cant assume that because you have had or have read about an issue with overheating which produces these symptoms that every time a phone does the reboot thing has the same issue
however lets take it out of context, yes if you have an overheating device for a along period of time then its not going to be good, but heavy usage of the device, heavy WIFI or HSDPA usage will all make the phone rather warm, charging the battery will make it warm, if your device gets too warm it may just crash, which happens in 6.5 as well.
Hmmmmmm ?
Can I just say that I think this forum is absolutely amazing... I managed to get my HD2 running windows phone 7 in only about an hour...
I too also have this issue, but at the moment I have taken the memory card out and just reading away here.... now am not a newbie when it comes to technology, just a newbie when it comes to this forum lol
Judging with what has been said the Memory Card used in the Windows Phone 7 needs to have fast enough random access memory in order for it to operate with the phone (As If it was Solid State Memory in the actual phone)
So... having read as well from georo - I give up and install a Sandisk class2 8GB no problems at all everything fine and no more restarting which led me to think not all the cards are good with WP7
So I am now going to take a wee journey out tonight to try and find a memory card similar to what georo has said... a Class2 8GB Sandisk...
If I too can get it working with this card then we could maybe begin a small list that works with WP7 on HD2

From my readings, it's NOT a matter of speed of the SD card. Although, a class 2 card is pretty slow...you should consider at least a class 4 or 6.
But, I digress, the issue with the rebooting has to do with the compatibility of the SD card and WP7. For some unknown reason, people have had to try a hit-or-miss approach to finding a SD card that works.
I have been fortunate that my 3C Pro 16GB Class 6 card worked right off the bat. And you might want to read up on the meanings and speeds of the various SD Class designation before spending money on a Class 2 card.

Ok thanks for the reply dude... as I have said I will need to get upto speed with this stuff... at the moment I have a standard SanDisk 2GB MicroSD... so suppose if I do go and buy a class 4-6 it will be money well spent anyway as I can always revert back to the old WM6.5 ... or just claim it didnt work and take it back...
Just on a wee note... I noticed that the HD7 which is pretty much the same phone runs on a Class 2 MicroSD (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883582)
Surely this should work?
also on this note... the card that comes out of a Stock 8Gb HD7 is a 8Gb Sandisk, Class 4...

Maximum R/W speed supported for microSD?

I need to purchase another microSD and before I spend the extra for a class 10 or 6 unit I thought I should see if anyone knows what the max. r/w bus speed is for the Milestone 2.
FYI Take it easy getting the card out, I removed the battery and as I was sliding it out I put more pressure then required on the vertical axis and the card snapped as it hit the halfway point. Oops, again
Unfortunately, it seems like M2 doesn't handle high classe microsd cards very well. I have a class 10 16gb sdcard and never got it working properly on my mobile. Don't know if it's a hardware or software fault. Others have the same problema, and there is a thread already about this issue.
Someone said that to solve the card you should format the sd card on the phone in the settings, and it makes sense. Make a backup and try it.

Already did that. The phone lags like hell when the 16gb class10 is in it, no matter if I format it on the phone, on the pc, or anywhere. I thought it was an issue like the one on the Evo, where the read and write speeds are limited through a config file. But it didn't work. It seems like the problem is with the media scanner, because when the sdcard isn't filled with music/photos, it runs well. But a 16gb card without music, photo or video is useless =[

Have you tested the phone with a different card/brand? Maybe MS2 is not fully compatible with the card you bought. Also you may test the card on a notebook with card reader to benchmark it. You know, Class doesn't mean much. Brand is much more important than class (be careful about fake sd cards sold on eBay). I assure you that a good brand class 6 sd card can outperform a cheap class 10 card.

No, but it comes with a micro SD Slot.
However, there are no officially certified cards that work with the focus. You can look at the sticky of this forum to see a lit of cards that have been tested by the members.

All you'll need to do is put the card into the phone, and then do what's called the three-finger-salute. You'll need to hold down the power, volume-down, and camera buttons until it asks to do a hard reset/format.

You need format it inside the phone together with the phone storage, e.g. hard reset/format the entire phone with the card inserted.
Also, if for some reason the card gives you issue with the phone and you decide not to use it anymore. You need to re-format the phone again. And your card will be useless unless you have a Nokia phone running Symbian OS. That's the only device that can re-format the card that is pulled out of WP7 phones like Focus.
Using a Sandisk 16GB C4 card. Formatted in WinXP, inserted it into phone and did the "Volume" + "Camera" + "Power" button combo to format in phone and initialize it.
A little off topic...I haven't had time to use the Focus yet. I had to make a quick run to a local mall to have the Ghost Armor put on the highly scratchable "Gorilla-Glass" screen. Been reading horror stories about how scratchable the Focus' screen is.
I don't know if it's a problem or just how the Focus is with 7004 firmware but, sometimes it acts funky about loading the main screen...where the tiles are. Sometimes, generally after running an app, when I go to the main screen, the tiles are slow about loading or showing. One time I had to reboot and then they all loaded right. Other times it take a few seconds to stabilize.
IIRC, slow loading home screen is a typical symton that the SD card is not working out well. Even after NoDo update, it will be the same. Microsoft did very little to fix the SD card issues. That hints it is the Samsung problem.
Since I've got the nodo update, all in all the phone is more stable, but I have been having the same problem with the main screen taking a few seconds to load, however its only when using the xda app and nothing else. Using a Kingston 16gb c4 sd card as well

I notice the slow main screen loading issue when the phone is tasked with other stuff, like installing apps or updating email or news and such as that. My HD7 did the same thing from time to time. But my concern is with the installed card. It's a class 4 card and the experts are saying it isn't about speed or throughput but the ability to keep up with WP7. The class 2 cards may have slower read/writes times but they seem to be more capable of keeping up with WP7.
One thing is sure, I won't buy one of those highly over-priced certified models. I'll wait till the larger cards get certified and buy the common version...the one without the expensive WP7 logo.

however I dont think thats what the probulm is!
but am unsure.
I realy hope someone will help me figure this out.
Are you having this problem with BOTH SD cards, or just one?
The SD card, WP7, HD2 combination is very finicky. My Kingston 8GB c2 seemed to be functioning perfectly fine, with the exception of 6-7 hours battery life w/ little to no usage. I also noticed that it took a while for apps to install at the last step of a hard reset on 7720.
Thinking that Kingston was good, I upgraded to 16GB c4. The device wouldn't even boot past the splash screen after leaving magldr. So, I changed to a PNY 16gb c4 and got to see just how badly my 8GB had been performing. The apps that took a while to install at the last step of hard resetting Mango were installed in an instant. And my battery life tripled. I don't have to worry about my phone dying anymore.
So, it's very likely that your SD card can be causing the random reboots. Use dev_storagelock to unlock the card you currently have installed. Perform a hard reset. Stop the process when magldr starts and swap cards. Allow the new card to be integrated into WP7 and see if the reboot problem persists.

It's probably not the ROM and most likely the SD card. That's what WP7 does. It's super picky.

i did a haed reset and cleard all crc data the problum still ocurs
the only diffrence to both of the sd cards a i have is size
so unless i was to go buy a higher class im gessing buying another would be pointless
the weard thang is this didnt alwase happen
i used bttfv1 no problums
had bttfv2 then all sorts of problums started happening first time i flashed most of the updates with zune
then was forced to start from scrach agin after i messed up my registry with advanced config
second time i upgraded to bttfv2 i used the one shot method and im not exactly sure but i think thats when i started haveing the issue.
You allready know what's wrong, it's the SD cards you've been using. Keep trying with class 2\4\6 Sandisk cards.

what was that a sarcastic remark? & no i dont know whats wrong because as i stated before i didnt have this problum before my previous installation.
i am useing sandisk class2 16gb i am useing the card that came with the phone i realy dont understand why that would be the issue?
whats the best card to get then?
Your SD card would be the issue if the card or some sectors on the card lacks the required random read\access speed. This could very well create problems on one installation while working seemingly fine on another.
I've already said what cards I believe gives you the highest chance of working, you'll just have to keep trying with those. Theoretically you could also try reinstalling the whole thing and hope that no critical files ends up on the lower speed sectors of the card, but I don't know what chance that would have of working.
The only marketable difference between the cards may be size, but WP7 doesn't really care about that. When I we say that it's picky, we really mean it. You can have great success with one card, and then put another in of the same brand different class and WP7 will no longer boot. SD cards affect battery life and everything.
By an SD card from Fry's, if there's one around. They've got a 15 day return policy w/o restock fee. I only went through 2 cards finding the right one to upgrade to, but was prepared to go through their entire selection and the sales girl even told me to not feel bad about doing it.
Hi,
probably you must calibrate battery or yours SD card not works correctly...

I had the same issue bu not due to Sd card
I have a Kingston 16GB calss2 works perfect
The issue was that the original rom was American English
if i istall like it is everything works good and since i/m greek i can use also the buld in greek keypad with no problem
BUT when i change to my language the full functions of the phone , then it keeps
restarting byitself ....
For me no problem to work with the english menu at all , so i keep the device in english and works.
