hey guys. i'm on att and i am thinking about getting a nexus one in the near future. after reading this article from engadget, i am a bit skeptical now. do these 3g problems really only exist on tmobile's network? i heard that it could also be a hardware issue. will they be improving the hardware on later revisions of the nexus one? i would like to have feedback from people using the att 3g phone on att's 3g network. are you having an reception issues. etc.?
thanks

I have no reception issues nor 3g issues.

The only thing about the hardware, is that the radio is where the palm of your hand rests, while holding the phone.
If you already have good coverage in your area, you'll have no further issues.
If your coverage currently sucks, and you drop calls... Well, you really shouldn't be considering adding to your ATT contract anyway.
Just my $.02
I never have any problems. The thing that bugs me most about the nexus one is the dust under the screen. I don't want to send mine in because, I need a phone to use, and know I'll probably get a dusty phone back.
also in the earlier youtube review of the phone, many reviewers complained of the unresponsinve touch buttons. have those been fixed?

I myself am planning on getting this phone in 46 days (when my contract is up). I can answer this for everybody. Apparently you just have to know where to touch. If you touch the bottom of the "touch buttons", it doesn't register.. however if you touch the top of the button it does work most if not all of the time. Really once you get use to it, its no big deal.
The touch screen was never unresponsive, its just sensitive, this happens when the palm of your hand touches the bottom of the screen while you touch other parts of the screen, after buying a case for my phone, I never had the same problem again.
3G is a big issue with Tmobile users, like myself, my co worker however has ATT and never had problems with his 3G.
You'll love it

I answered that question for you, its fine. You just tap the top of the capacitive button and it works.
If you are coming from another phone with capacitive touch buttons (ie Droid / Milestone), you will be really bothered for about a day while you adapt to the N1's touch buttons. After that, you'll forget about it completely.
For 3G, just try it and see if it works for you. Either return it or sell it - you will definitely find someone willing to take it off of your hands.
+1 true that.

Yes, the capacitive buttons along the bottom of the screen only register touches along the top half of each label. It's strange, but if I had to guess why I would say that during testing Google/HTC found that they were accidentally triggering the buttons while using the trackball and probably moved the input pads up a bit to avoid this (a software change rather than hardware). But that is a complete guess on my part.
As for the 3G issues, the whole thing was blown out of proportion by tech sites looking for page hits.
Go for it! Nexus One rocks! /end shameless fanboy-ism
Just the facts...I did have issues initially, but nothing that a new ROM can't fix. Capacitive screen was overly sensitive, but toned down after flashing CM 5.0.5.3. I'd say it's even more accurate. Physical keyboards are for klutzy neanderthals.
Noticeable speed increase and better memory allocation for app use after flashing. Soft buttons below the screen are only registering on the top half of the icons...not a big deal but I can understand how someone can think there's something wrong with it and press harder (like I did). Oh yeah...no 3G issues here. Downloading 2.8mbps / uploading 1.5mbps on AT&T.
Doesn't take that much effort to fully customize N1 to meet your demands 100%. You can even do CPU-killing processes by running Pandora, Navigation, wifi-tethering, car dock bluetooth (on speakerphone), AND make a phone call....all at the same time. Snapdragon processor kicks a$$!
i like my nexus one but i do have the 3g problem. i live in vegas and while im downtown i get good signal but at my house, like 15mins away from the strip, my signal switches back and forth with EDGE and 3g, my touch pro 2 doesnt do this.

I'm curious to what he answers too. Anyway are you any closer to making a decision on what phone you want?
Originally I searched night and day to find out what the widget was that had the beautiful weather forcast when you turned on the phone. It was the same widget that had the windshield wipers when it was raining outside. Eventually I found my answer, its the htc sense home screen. I looked into htc sense further and I find it to be very ugly. So thats why I'm going with the nexus one over the htc desire, etc. Besides I have the old apk of beautiful widgets before htc told them to take it down (that has the same look and feel as htc sense). I know htc sense can be turned off but I still like the feel of the nexus one over desire and some of these other phones.
Thats my story.
i am pretty sure that i will be getting it but just when i have the money saved up. poor college student ftw haha. almost there though

would you get the same phone? or one of the newer phones out now?
That is the question! I feel so locked in by Sprint's SERO program, that it is difficult to leave for ATT for example. The 1200min +unlimited text and unlimited internet for $59/mo. I would like the extra RAM in the Kaiser though (and SIM cards are great so you can change phones every day). What has come out since the Kaiser?
I'm in your boat too. I like my Mogul, but I'm not convinced. I've had it for almost 3 weeks of my trial period. I've already had to replace one handset because the scroll wheel froze up and wouldn't budge. Now, my replacement has a really light spot on the screen. I'm tempted to get a Touch over a 3rd Mogul in 3 weeks. Anyone think that is a good idea?

Depends on what you're looking for. Personally, I would go nuts with the Touch. I hate the fact it doesn't have a keyboard and has very few hardware buttons. I'm not into having everything on the touch screen. I prefer hardware buttons I can find by feel so I can keep my eyes focused on what I'm doing.

Are you selling that Ozone? I'll take it off your hands
I've been considering on upgrading to the Touch Pro 2 now that it is available at Verizon. Not quite sure though. I got a glimpse of the Leo, and I may want to hold out until that phone debuts later next year.
See ya around SoCal. Out of curiousity, what phone did you migrate to?
no i didnt have it for long at all..what 3monts i think??
..i tried and tried..but i just cant get the feel for it. I miss my VGA screen, and the full on feel of WINMO.
im moving on to a Touch Pro 2..according to VZW i should have it by Fri, Sat the latest. Im hoping my order is processed prior to them being out of stock.
Sounds like the better choice. I would die if our company decided to allow Touch Screens... But currently is Non-Touch only.

Good luck! Let us know how is your experience with the new phone.
Me, I got tired of touch screens. I'm very happy with the Ozone.
I love to have a keyboard, no stupid screen rotation that takes forever, tons of hw buttons and not have to use your nail for most of the options.
I may go back to touch screens in the future when the technology and windows mobile gets better.

my fiancee DIGS the Ozone. she doesn't put it down! as soon as i got it for her she turned into a smartphone guru lol. i asked if she wanted a touchscreen but because of our toddler, her pregnancy and her nails..the answer was "seriously J, what am i gonna do if i go into labor and i need to dial a number..i need a dial pad and keys, keys i say"! yea..she was cranky
Well, stop back in and give us a full comparison of the two phones.
I want a nice blend between touch and non-touch screen phones. That means, I can fully use a keyboard without the need to tap a screen if I don't need to. I enjoyed my PPC6800 for that very reason. But, it was slow. The Palm Treo was ok, but the lack of soft buttons was killing me.
See ya around, I may be joining you soon. That is, if my business ever starts to be productive again.

So, basically, I am living in israel for a year so I can have a year of grade-free religious studies and not have to worry about my gpa or take tests. The only problem is that Cell phone selection is pretty crappy.
So I went onto ebay and bought a G2 that shipped to my parents place and a buddy of mine was supposed to bring it to me tomorow but I found out today that I have the hinge problem pretty bad. (my dad showed it to me via skype)
I contacted HTC and they said I am still under warranty but they may not even replace the phone if I send it it. I can get my parents to bring it to a local repair shop and get them to just fix the spring, but the only problem with that is that they may not know what they are doing with the g2 as it is a new phone.
Normally it wouldnt be an issue to just send it it to HTC but the next time a friend is coming in from the states is early january and I don't want to have to wait that long for a phone that may not even get repaired...what would you do?
p.s. I also happen to have a friend here in israel, and although he is not proffesionally trained, he has opened up many an HTC phone. can anyone who has done the spring fix themeselves tell me if it is a particularly hard operation to do on the phone? When you are done doing it does the phone show any sign of being opened to the untrained eye? Sorry about the long post
mountain out of a molehill, you are making, my friend.
get the phone and stick with it. Your dad may not realize that this is normal for the phone.
Get the phone over to the promised land now... and then if you are so unhappy with it... fix it yourself using a thread on how to repair your own hinge on this here XDA Forums!
todah!
Thanks for the reply one thing I noticed when he showed me the phone was that it was almost exactly the same problem as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvHE5lZ1tCs in that the screen is a little wobly after the keyboard is deployed. Is that also normal?

its normal. Its basically a non issue. I think people just expected it to be rock solid like its predecessor the G1. A lot of people took it way out of context and basically caused such a ruckus over this...
anything with hinges.. is going to be a little free to move around because.. its on hinges!!!
unless the hinges are broken theres no problem with this phone. I mean.. its not for the construction worker or for people who dont have the time or energy to treat it with some respect.. its not exactly a wimp either...
You can always tighten it up a bit to give it more "snap"...
Also.. you will find that your need for the keyboard is not as great as you think... because of the capability for voice commands and the incredible swype and gingerbread keyboards on this --- its so intuitive I rarely need the keyboard anymore.

+1 for the keyboard, i only use mine for long text messages or emails, otherwise i use swype/HTC IME keyboard.
I wasn't happy with mine at first but now I don't even notice it.
Agree with androidcues on the fact that people are making waaay more of a big deal about the hinge than it really is.
The things that are shown in the video linked above, or similar ones (like the phone opening while holding it upside down), would never even be noticed by most people. While I wish the hinge design would stay closed a little more "firmly", its an extremely minor criticism. I still quite like the design, and the general build quality of the phone is excellent.
I'm not as concerned about the loose hinge as I am about the fact that it wobbles after the keyboard is deployed

This again, as stated earlier is really a non-issue if you are normal and take care of your phone. HOWEVER, if you throw your phone around, like to sit on it, or work construction where your phone goes through hell each day, this WOULD be a problem. Personally, i dont understand how some people take such poor care of their phones .

The things the guys is doing in the Youtube video you posted, you and every other other normal person will never do in regular use. The way he is pressing the bottom edge of the screen with the keyboard deployed, or bending the top, there is no sane reason for you to ever do those things. Its just a nitpicky point discovered by somebody looking for problems where there aren't really any.
Its a self fulfilling prophecy. Like a hypochondriac surfing WebMD, the more of this stuff you read or watch, the more you are likely to find a "problem". Stop sweating it, and wait until you have it in your hands. If it really feels like its defective, then send it to HTC. You have full warranty for a year from the manufacturer, I believe.
long story short, your phone is fine, a little give in the hinge is normal.

Thanks for the heads up guys, I think the current plan is to get the phone to me and if it really bothers me, I'll give it to my friend for surgery, I remember seeing somewhere you could buy some of those warranty is now void stickers to put on the phone to make it look like you never touched it... Can someone give me a link?
Htc will check your phone and determine whether you have voided the warranty. But...I'm betting you'll be voiding it anyhow. Just send it back the way you found it. Document recovery hboot info etc so you can find the files to flash when and if u need to. But you shouldn't and lmfao at a 'sticker'

Looks like a change in materials!
I still don't see the fuss about the hinge though.
What fusses me more is that I've gone through 3 G2s and each of them had a pixel problem, be it stuck or dead. Had to use a microscopic-ish lens to find them. Lawl.

Don't be. People have mentioned that even over time, the hinge will get loose again (this is inevitable, all springs give way over time). So be content with what you have if you have a bug-free phone!

First of all, you may want to get yourself a nice camera that can do HD video recording.
Secondly, your second G2 with the tight hinges is exactly how my G2 was when I first got it. It was super tight, no give, and then after a week of use it become really loose but not quite as loose as your first one. Give it time, and I'm pretty confident that your new G2 will call the loose hinge flu. Let's hope not, though.

Are you sure it's not this issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910624? This is a problem inherent with capacitive touchscreens (though some phones may be more susceptible than others depending on design and tolerances).
If not, you might want to try starting a new thread about it instead of trying to get help through one about the hinge (especially if it really is a known issue, others may be able to provide solutions).

No it doesn't, you just don't understand the nuances of capacitive touch sensors. YOU NEED TO COMPLETE THE CIRCUIT by having solid contact with the metal ring around the outside of the screen.
I've been playing with couple different dummy units at the stores
Like best buy and radio shack. They got no hinge problem at all. But really my wife got a g2 that has the problem but she doesn't say anything at all. me neither. I don't see why the problem would make me go have a replacement though. Unless theres something else. But so far so good

I suspect that it will be as Sprint handled the GSM roaming on the TP2... i.e. it will not work on GSM in the US. The TP2 was SIM locked to only allow the GSM to work outside of the US.

These new 4.5, and 4.7" screens coming out, might as well have a damn tablet pressed to your face

Very good point! 4 inch is great. 4.3 is big enough.

The global roaming capabilities seems interesting as well. I wonder how well that will work in gsm areas around me.

Yea, man. If I did a lot of international travel I could see myself buying this phone.
I was reaaaally digging this phone when I first read about it and looked at the video on it by wirefly.
Im still luggin my tp2 around, but its just about had it, it freezes after every text, sometimes it even restarts
And thats bad since I get like.... upwards of 300 texts a day
in anycase.
When I compared the tp2 and the design side by side.. the screens width is almost exactly the same.
its just taller.
When compared side by side with the 3d.. it lags a bit when doing the caruswheel and unlocking.
But aside from all that it looked amazing.
the screen is very pretty and I love the design of it.. smooth and hints of curves.
The main thing killing it for the 3d is the design of it. Its suck a brick.. sharp edges.. and that cam buttun just jumps out into everyones buisness lol
That being said.. Im rally torn between the 2.
When Im in austin tomorrow Im going to have to check it out again cause the one here in ft hood was a little glitch. it doesnt even auto rotate or light up the notifications led.
OH and day one while I was playing with it, (since it didnt rotate) I checked for updates and It already has a softwear update LMAO
Why not get the Nexus S 4g? Its 4" and a great phone.

My gf has that phone.. she has alot of issues with it.
That and the release version has a bug where you cant send any text over the 160 charicter limit
3rd party apps dont help because even tho it lets her pass the charicter limit and 'chain' the messages like everyother phone does.. her phone will only send a "@" symble instead of the message everytime she passes the 160 limit of the phone.
And I text alot and send texts up to 400 charicters all the time.
So that wouldnt work for me
And as far as I can tell there wont be an official update for some time
I was thinking about getting the galexsy s ii epic 4g touch.. but dont really like the interface or the size. Its a tad too big in my opinion

No update any time soon? ICS will likely hit the NS4G not too soon after the Galaxy Nexus is released. Probably early to mid December. The SMS issue is easily solved by integrating with Google Voice. SMSing is about million times better with GV than with anything else you'd try. Back up, online management, and now MMS support.
If you look hard enough a new/new-ish NS4G can be had for $200 on ebay. Not bad for a soon to be ICS, WiMax, and Google Wallet capable phone. I'm upgrading to the Galaxy Nexus if it comes to Sprint but I wouldn't have a single problem holding on to it for another couple of months if it doesn't.

I'm just tired of carrying a brick around in my pants for now.. I'll root it, OC it to 1.5, rom, kernel, and it will be just perfect for me

anyway, the guys at the sprint store are saying the galexy nexus is set to his around november 15thish
As far as the nexus s 4g, I can get it for like 50 bucks from sprint cause of my sero upgrade price.
but her phones already running 2.3.7 and she has the texting issue, her phone freezes and restarts all the time, and she looses data randomly.
and its not just hers, her sister has the same phone with the same problems
I decided against the evo design. 100% no after looking at it at another storeyesturday, it only plays the left channel of any audio, I loaded multiple music videos on youtube of songs I normally listen to and I was only getting have the sounds out of the phones speaker.
