I have solved my slow HD2 issue - HD2 General

Hi guys,
I have been struggling with this issue since I have bought this phone, but today I have solved it. When it slows down , I have checked the task manager and it says the manila.exe was eating 98% of the memory. I tried everything, then one of my friend needed my memory card and I gave him mine and then suddenly my HD2 went back to race car situation. I played with it 3 hours nothing changed so that concluded that memory card was defective. I have formatted it nothing changed and bought a new one. Now everthing is perfect. I cannot say this is the solution but it solved mine. You may try it.
Good luck

Bro, thanks but this problem has been answered before.
Its known that the micro sd m2 slows down the phone.

so basically the memory card it comes with is trash and you'll have to replace it or keep your phone running slow?

Didn't work for me.

i am not sure what class the sd card is that comes with our hd2's but i experienced the same thing. i just upgraded to a class 6 8gb card and the difference has been huge for me in terms of performance.

actually just your average class 4 SD card would make the phone perfome WAAAY beter.
I remeber when I purchase my HD2 and notice that it came with a 16GB class 2 card I was actually disappointed so I started using my 8GB class 4

So what ur all saying is that the major cause of phone lag is attributed to the cheap memory card?

Going to a class 6 from the garbage class 2 that came on the phone made a huge difference for me.

it will also improve the battery, especially for the people like myself that use the phone as an MP3 player. The battery drains so fast when I play music even with screen off....Im gonna look into a better sd card. It sucks though, the pack a craptastic Class 2 sd card and a small ass 1250 battery to power this massive screen. That still baffles me.

we shouldnt have to buy these
we should all just call tmobile and complain or take it to the tmobile forums, we all paid good money for these devices, last thing i need to do is go by something my phone already came with beacuse tmobile decided to cheap out.

When I got my phone I immediately swiched it out with my blackberry 16gb card. Everything T-mobile is trash except for the phone itself, I wish Verizon or AT&T wouldve gotten it. Coverage is behind horrible in my city with T-mobile. LOL

It's the write speed. They all read about the same. It's fast. But writing to them is much slower so they class them. You'll see a little number next to the company logo on the card. (2). The class 2 isn't horrible, but they had a batch. I used mine for a long time with no problems. But I did upgrade to a class 4 and things were better. Class 10 is the fastest that I know of but they are pricey.

Wow, i feel stupid for not knowing what the different classes were.
thanks. i'll be getting a new memory card soon

I rebooted my HD2 a couple of times because it was running SLOOOOW. Didn't understand what could be causing it - so using the dotfred task manager I discovered that for some reason Microsoft Voice Command was eating 100% of my CPU time...ha. I disabled voice command and all went back to normal. I rebooted a couple of times & re-enabled voice command and it seems to be ok now.

yeah the hd2 is a really great phone, the only thing keep alot of buyers away is the lag/freezes ): I think rooting and putting a custom rom will also solve it.

OH HELL! There really is a lil "2" icon on my sd
But then... It was pretty fast like 2 weeks ago for me. now... it just slowed down... i have two "class-2" cards 2gb and 8gb ones, and 2gb is actually much faster rotfl. I just having troubles with BROWSING my files on card cause even my "file explorer" lags when i do >.> So yeah.. it used to be better..
and yup. i hard reseted my phone and formatted my cards. didnt really helped me.

i tried replacing my memory card from class 2 to class 6. it still hanged
i still have to wait for the text message/s to arrive before i can resume doing anything on it

Noob question alert!!

Ok this questions sounds lame even as i type it!
But here go's anyways!!
Ive noticed a significant lag when dealing with media/pictures files from the memory card, it can take time to update the many images in a folder.
Would investing in a class 6 card make a significant improovment in the delay it takes the phone to read the card?
Im guessing what im trying to establish is!
A. The card is going to slow for the phone and therefore causing lagg
B. The card is going as fast as any other would and the phone cant read that much info that quickly therefore makes no diffreannce!
Hope this makes sense!

Usually the very first time it loads the images it creates thumbnails, so this will take a bit longer the first time, especially if you have a lot of images.
People have said that a class 6 has speeded up the phone, but I'm not sure if this is psychological or not. The phone can only read to a certain speed which a class 4 should be able to produce, so purchasing a class 6 shouldn't make a difference as the limitations of the phone read / write speed can't meet the SD card speed.
I would give it a few days first, let them create first and if you're not happy, get a class 6 and see if it makes a difference.
I have a class 6 which I got ages ago for my Touch HD.

4.83 Gb Internal Storage

Upon attempting the stock Froyo performance upgrade, I ended up at the dreaded Dell logo and couldn't get past it. I tried QDL, restore, factory reset etc... eventually I was able to figure out that it was a dead internal card. After reading some posts online and looking at the video of taking it apart I figured I'd check to see if it was the Micro card or the socket or what so I popped it open and put in a 6Gb class 4 card I had laying around.
I then ran the test in fastboot again and the card came back as fine. So then, from something I'd seen I decided to try doing the factory reset and that worked, so then I ran the QDL tool again on it. I was amazed when the phone booted up, and even more amazed that I had 4.83Gb of internal memory. After all my reading, I was under the impression that android wouldn't recognize more than 2Gb
Here are a couple of screen shots.. blurry... but still.
Now while I was going crazy because my 2 week old Streak was bricked, someone asked if I'd done a nandroid backup (I hadn't). Is that the best backup method?
Also, I tried several things when the Dell logo wasn't going away. Can anyone look at the screen shots and tell me what I'm running, OS-wise? I see a Steve kernel, and I'm wondering if that is part of the performance fix.
BTW, quadrant score is 1504 overclocked to 1194.
Moving to General
I just noticed I can no longer connect to my company's exchange server where I could before. Any thoughts on that?

Well I can tell you after it worked with the 6 I tried on of my 16gig class 2 cards and it didn't work. In the engineering test mode it recognized the card, but I couldn't get it to boot into android. I'm guessing class 2 is just too slow... or at least its too low at that capacity.
Here's the link to the thread on modaco which planted the seed in my head.

Here is a collection of pictures regarding taking the phone apart

and here is the video of it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxcib-ricec&feature=player_embedded#!
I ended up using my thumbnails to get to the T5 screws. If you push in at the curve in the corner of the end panels at the end of the phone where the curve is they are pretty easy to remove. They are just held on with double stick tape. No special tools needed. I used the T5, my thumbnails, and a random 6Gb card I had laying around the house.
Those guys in the modaco thread are talking scripts and so on and so forth. I didn't have to do any of that. I don't know if that is because of the kernel or the build of the 2.2 I'm running, but it seems to have no problem with a bigger card.
Still have problems with Exchange though, and not sure if that is because of something I did with the card mods or what.
they are talking about the scripts etc because they want the card to a specific mount point that cant be achieved by just replacing the sd. outstanding job tho mate, you had been brave!
Have you seen any performance increase by using the larger card?

No performance increase as far as quadrant was concerned. I gained like 8 points on the quadrant score. Ended up at 1504. Then went to 1.5.3 and managed up to 1600 or so.
Back down to 1494 with all my apps back on, and that's with set CPU to max on demand in all tests.
Hmmm.... I wonder if it would work this easily with an 8GB microSd card? Changing all that script as posted on Modaco's site scares the heck out of me. I bought an additional 32GB card to do it, but haven't built my nerves up yet.
Was it worth resurrecting a thread that hasn't been added to for nearly 7 months?

Exactly how well does WP7 run on HD2?

Hey there guys, i will be receiving my new HD2 soon in the mail sometime next week and i have a few questions which i hope you guys don't mind answering. My first question how well does it run on the device? Compared to android which runs amazingly with no hitches just as a normal android device would. Are there a lot of bugs present? Could i just install WP7 on it and use that instead of android without there being show stopping bugs present? and lastly how is the battery life on WP7 compared to the android roms?
Many thanks.
Oh this is a big question, im not going to go in to detail now so if you have any further questions than ask away, but for now here is the no BS low down
Does it work, yes, very very well, its quicker than any OS i have ever used, including native iphones, android and even WP7.
Notable bugs include the marketplace freeze, some times the marketplace just packs in and you have to do a reboot to get it working again, i believe thats true to all WP7 devices tho
next, sometimes, very very rarely for me, the touch screen seems to stop, usually a swipe in the opersite direction then try again gets it working in moments
The camera has an issue with focusing, because we dont have a two stage button we cant focus to well, the flash for the camera is slightly out of sync meaning any photo in sub optimal light that uses the flash would result in a photo with a green tint to it. There is an alternative camera app already that is great, it has focus but the flash issue remains.
The battery life isnt too great, this seems mostly due to the differences in the battery controller, WP7 may or may not report the correct battery level, it may appear to drop very fast but that is usually because you didnt charge it fully in the first place, some times you have to restart the phone and charge again to fill it up.
and now the big one that im not going to go in to great detail on
SD cards
this is the single biggest course of almost all issues with the phone, if you have a dodgy card you will get wifi issues, restart issues, lagging issues etc
there is no list of compatible cards, no two cards are alike even within the same model, statistically you have a better chance with a class 2 or 4 card, but thats not to say you will have problems will all class 10 cards
I used to use android and there isnt any chance of me moving back, yes you cant mod the hell out of this but since i got itm, ive not wanted to, it just works and it works very well
i agree 100 %
but i have no trouble in the marketplace - i have downloaded manny games an other apps. with my old sd-card i have a very slow installation but now all is ok.
WP7 works on the HD2 as well as on any native device. I can tell that because I had also a Mozart for 2 weeks and could do a head to head. All the bugs present (Marketplace crashing from time to time) are also present on the native device, so they are not HD2 related in any way.
Battery life is OK for me. With some tweaks I can get a full they of moderate to heavy usage (3G on, 2 e-mail [email protected] min. sync, 1 hr IE surfing, 30 min. gaming and 30 min calls).
To be honest I boot Android lately only to show off to some pathetic DesireHD owners
I agree with all the replies so far. And dazza is completely correct about the SD cards... most issues people are having is because of using a sd card that doesn't play nice with wp7. I haven't had any issues with marketplace, and have had great luck using sandisk class 2 and 4 cards. Every other brand of card I've tried, including kingston, was terrible with wp7.
The main difference between the hd2 and native wp7 phones is that the hd2 only has 56,000 colors while native phones have around 4million colors, and you only get 2-point multitouch with HD2, and it can be kinda buggy, while native wp7 devices all have at least 4 point multitouch... so certain apps that use multitouch may not work properly or at all with the HD2.
Multitouch is the only problem
I have found that on my hd2 that wp7 worked a lot smoother than the native rom. I am very pleased with this OS. It has convinced me to buy one in the near future. which will be in a couple of months
mine works 100% perfect except multi-touch sometimes doesn't work too well. Battery life is good, marketplace never freezes, I have had zero issues with my SD card, speed and fluidity are good.
All the other issues seem to be WP7 and not HD2 related. i would much rather have this over a "real" wp7 device because at least I can boot into Android whenever I want.
I had my first taste of WP7 today, it was really just a taste test to help me decide what to upgrade to when my upgrade is due, I was impressed enough to make my decision.... (Omnia7 in case you were wondering)
I was only running it for about and hour and a half but everything seemed flawless, the activation code I got from MS worked fine and I was up and running in minutes. The only disappointing thing was that although I imported my contacts from my Gmail account no numbers came through. Everyone was there but they had no numbers
The UI was super smooth and the keyboard was far and away the best I have used yet..........
The phone did seem to be getting pretty hot while using it though.
Also the lack of a traditional "taskbar" was quite annoying, I like to see a battery meter at all times.
Overall very impressed though.
Wow thanks for the descriptive replies guys, so it appears to run very stable, I suppose. I'll just give the wp7 a shot first right off the bat instead of android!

i 100% agree with the statement Unleashed with WP7..
and i do agree with the SD card problems.infact, make sure what ever sd card you have,to be a class 4 sandisk on your HD2.as it's the most stable on hd2 with os wp7.
Enjoy!!!and Read as much as you can for your HD2 on XDA mate..
I will also buy a "original" WP7 device.
Do anyone of you know when Dual core smartphones will come out?
I don't want to buy an "old" 1Ghz model, I heared Nvidia has brought Tegra 2 and even 3 is there now which has Quad Core.
Any news about that?
As of now I haven't seen any WP7 phone utilize the tegra processor or any other dual core processor available. There are however many android phones which are using dual cores coming soon. the tegra 3 is still in development if im not mistaken.

What's your setup? I'm assuming you have a TMO US phone? Radio, ROM? I'm about to flash and it would be a great help.
I agree with all the reply's here too! I bought my Hd2 after a long line of HTC phones purely so that i could use custom ROM's and take the p**s out of anyone with an iphone. My phone using WM6.5 was "my PC in my pocket". It did everything! I was a bit dubious about installing WP7 on it because its like going from XP to Windows 7. You get used to what your used to. I do use things such as the flashlight and voice recorder and i didn't want not to have those things that i use so much.
After i installed WP7 i loved the way it looked, animations are beautiful, its so smooth. Im also glad to say all the apps that i used on WM6.5 are available from the marketplace. I dont think i could go back to WM6.5 now. It seems too clunky compared to WP7.
I do have the same issues as everyone else with the dodgy camera, its not bad in daylight though, and i love the 720P camcorder. Battery life has been an issue but ive done the registry tweaks that have been talked about on the forums and im getting good results at the mo. Very close to WM6.5 in fact. WIFI and SD cards have not been a problem, mind you i am using a 16GB Sandisk.
When you do install WP7 on your HD2 just make sure that you get an activation code from Microsoft first thing! It makes the whole "WP7 experience" MUCH better!!
I think i truly have been turned into a Windows phone 7 fan. I just cant wait to see what ROM's and apps some of the chefs on here can cook up in the next few month's!!
ive been using it for about 2 months and it worked really well. i had the issues that everyone else had experienced with the marketplace, but this didnt happen that often. only thing you need to check is your SD card. there are a few threads about which SD cards work, but these are all unofficial. i have a topram (rebadged sandisk) 16gb SDHC class 4 and that works ok, but its not great (but it was £12.99!!)

UK DVP users - what are your experiences?

I ordered my DVP from Clove on Thursday and it arrived on Friday - I decided to go with them rather than Dell directly given the various communication issues people have had with Dell.
My DVP is 8GB - I'm assuming there is only one version of the phone for the UK market, I haven't seen any option to buy a 16GB version. So far, everything has worked smoothly - it came loaded with firmware .7350 if I remember correctly, I then got the prompt to upgrade to NoDo pretty soon after - that was done very quickly, nothing like the 23 minutes that Microsoft suggested.
All in all, I'm happy - no crashing whatsoever, interface is very smooth and quick, etc. My only complaint so far is the lack of custom ringtones - this should've been addressed in NoDo and its pretty obvious that Microsoft has held back on this to try and make money - the only simple alternative is to get ringtones from the Marketplace which Microsoft of course makes a commission on. Oh yeah, my other bugbear is the battery life - it's pretty horrendous, I'd say I struggle to get a day out of it! Is that normal?
These small things aside, I'm pretty happy with the DVP at the mo.... any other UK owners having a similar problem-free usage?
I am an Omnia 7 owner but I've been thinking about switching. Just a couple of points:
- Dell is selling the 16GB as far as I know, someone else can confirm that.
- Battery is something that improves overtime, you need to go through a few charging cycles. During the first days I would suggest letting the battery die before charging the phone rather than straight when you hit low power.
Can you comment on the issues the US phones are having (Wifi connection, poor camera, etc.). And also, is the SD card slot still accessible?
Cheers

I have the 16gb model (uk) which is the model dell sells directly. if you buy throgh a third party you can only get the 8gb model at the moment.
can good in light but poor in the dark (bluring)
the sd card has the black tape over it and the manual says not to remove it.
i only get crashes/hangs when downloading large files from the marketplace and when trying to download a video through the youtube apps.
I can't believe after all this time they're still producing the phone with the same camera issue. What have they been doing with all the feedback?! I know they have an upcoming update but it should have been one to fix the firsts phones with the new ones being flawless. Dell needs a good kick.
Sent from my Omnia 7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I can second the comments re the camera, it isn't particularly good in the dark.
I didn't realise that Dell was selling the 16gb model - and its only £20 more than what I paid for the 8gb. That said, if the difference is hangs and crashes I'm not sure if its worth it. Ganondolf, could you give me an example of what apps (or large files) you were downloading - I'd like to test and see if I have the same crashing. If I don't then I'll probably stick with the 8gb.

if happens alot when i download big apps live xbox live games 30 - 80mb in size. crashes/hangs abot 70% of the time. I have noticed if i leave it on the download status screen till it downloads and installs it crashes less.
small apps up to 10mb dont usually have a problem.
I also get it within the youtube apps as they have large files.
I am about 99% sure that it is the micro sd card as when download big files and i go to my apps list it sometimes does not show the app icon and only a dot like temp icon and sometimes apps wont load whilst downloading.
Also if download has a problem it buggers the wifi and needs to tuen the machine off and back on to fix. of note it does not need a battery pull to turn it off, holding down the power button for a long period (10 secs) turns it off.
I think it was a good thing you got the 8gb as i may need to swap the sd card meaning i will buy a 32gb card so it would not have been any different if i upgraded from a 8gb.
PS. I sent a msg to linoel at dell on twitter and he thinks i have the newest firmware and there will not be a new one released for the uk.
apart from that the dvp runs perfect so if a sd card swap will fix the problem i will do it in the near future.
So the newest firmware still has a rubbish camera. It's sorted then, I'll keep my Omnia 7 for now and see what comes at the end of the year.
hi guys im new to the dvp forum.
i have a dell venue that i bought online from a guy in USA which is unlocked. when i got the phone i noticed that the black sticker wasnt there so im guessing the guy attempted to swap the sd card....the phone works fine tho.
the problem i have is that it wont restart!! when i go to about >> reset your phone.. nothing happens. is there anyway to fix this?? i hope someone can help as i cannon download any apps from the market place and assign my facebook =(
thanks
There is no carrier to the UK DVP phone is it? That makes future update quicker. And I hope it has 512mb ram. Guess the US one did has 256mb ram, games crashes constantly on the US device, which seems not happen often on others.
The US one has 512MB RAM.
I don't want to start the discussion again. I believe it has 512 but currently only 256 is recongnised by the system, when the software uses above 90m ram it will crash by itself, ie some games. This doesn't happen to the htc mozart but happens to DVP. If you believe now it has 512 and its fully used then believe it, since it doesn't affect your usage.
In response to the 256 v 512 discussion - I certainly saw all of that discussion with the US DVPs. My UK DVP shows 480mb free and so is presumably recognising all 512mb RAM. Somebody else mentioned that the UK DVPs already have the new upcoming firmware preloaded - so maybe that's addressed the problem.
My battery life has also improved greatly - not sure whether it's because of going through some powering cycles or because I disabled both checking for updates and giving feedback, but its lasting a lot longer than before now.
I also have the 8g UK DVP model through expansys, mine also reads about 480m free so im assuming it has the 512ram. as well...
As for problems ive had none,
NO crashes,
No freezes and NO resets yet....
All in all im loving the DVP and the battery is good better than my HTC Desire that i have left behind without a second thought!!!!
I got my phone from Expansys and it is freezing constantly when using WiFi and downloading apps. Indeed 480 MB of RAM is reported.

I have lots of freezes and hangs on my UK 16gb model (from dell.co.uk) when using wifi.
I changed the sd card to a sandisk 32gb class 4 (I here the class 2 version is best for dvp) and have not had a hang or freeze using wifi.
Works flawlessly know.

Question on your WiFi hangs.....I've been looking at WiFi issue. During the course of a day I may pass through and use, many different WiFi AP's. At home I made a modification of my AP and now the reception on my Dell is far better.
I'm wondering if the hardware in hte Dell is simply inferior....in a way that it works best with specific settings....as opposed to alot of devices that work fairly well regardless of the AP settings.
I've noticed the closer I get to a pure N setting, the better my device runs. The amount and length of feezes and hangs decrease as I approach that complete N mode.
People who experience the hangs and freezes at home. What are your AP settings?
Dont think it has anything to do with AP settings, my phone will crash without connecting to any wifi signal, just with wifi enabled.

Im using wifi g at home and work and it works with no problems. the only thing i would say the dvp wifi reciever does not go as far from the router before disconnecting than my brothers iphone 4 and my old xperia x1.
have not tried connecting it to wifi n but have not had any problems on wifi g.
What do you mean by "AP settings". are u talking about the phone or the router?
I've ordered a 32gb class4 sansicc from amazon.co.uk but it seems to be a fake one... It freezes the device even more than the original SD card. 3 months ago I had one from the same seller and it was ok, now still in my US DVP and works perfect. The 2 sds do look different. BE CAREFUL when you buy the sd card. Just too many fakes...

SD card unexpectedly removed.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Removed as in someone sneaked in and removed it from the phone unexpectedly? Or do you mean its unmounting without your prompting?

This just happened for the first time today for me...
Was just walking around, and it had the notification of "SD Card unexpectedly removed" followed by "Scanning SD card..."
I have a 16GB SDXC card.

Getting very annoying

Only saw it happen once. I'll clean it. Maybe a bad connection.
Also, lose the signature.
How's it formatted? exFat? I have had issues with mine formatted that way.
Switched back to Fat32 for awhile. Tried exFat again and have not had any problems for several weeks.
Running agats kernel btw.
This is how many times my card keeps unmounting.

I purchased a Sandisk 64Gb card during the last Amazon sale. The thing did this constantly and was unusable. Yesterday I got a Samsung 64Gb card and I've been using it pretty much non-stop without issue. Seems Sandisk had a bad batch or something, so, are you by any chance using a Sandisk? I've read about this happening with 32Gb Sandisk's too.
yes this happened ALOT with my 32gb sd card. even got it corrupted and lost all my info doing a format.
since it hasn't happened yet.
I had my evo do this. Even though some people were saying that changing the card helped, or most weren't having the problem, my deduction was that the card was moving inside the SD socket. Same idea as unplugging an external drive. If you did that while the drive was accessing, for whatever reason, it would corrupt the card. I permanently lost files that couldn't be recovered, even with recovery software. I stocked it up to a less expensive (quality) card and the card moving in the socket. Since the evo had a funky SD card socket and lock system, I tore a piece of paper, the same size as the card and folded it over and put it on top of the card. In that setup, the battery held down the card because it was on top of it. The paper took up the slack and made the battery push down slightly on it and make it less likely to move around. Problem never resurfaced. Perhaps put a piece of paper on top of the card before sliding it in. The extra thickness might make it less likely to slide around. Not too tight or you might have problems removing it or it might damage the card mechanism. Make sure the paper isn't too small. Like too small to get stuck in the slot after the card is removed. Just some ideas...

If this is the problem then it should be covered under warranty. It's workmanship and I'd take it in. Jimmy rigging isn't something you should be expected to do to use your device.

Same thing happened with my 32gb Sandisk Ultra when I had my GS3. I re-formatted it and it was fine for about a month....and then all of a sudden it became unreadable (nothing would read it). Sandisk had no problem sending me a new one. I lost a lot of pics, videos and music though.

Wow. This has been happening to me for a few days. I just went to work and exchanged out my 32gb Sandisk for a new one. Hasn't done it since the exchange but I guess we will see since it seems to be a common problem with the S4 and not my SD card.
It was weird though because it said it was a bad SD card so I put it into another phone (S3) and it said the SD card was bad as well. I formatted it while in the S3 and then I put it back into my S4 and everything worked fine. The format didn't even erase my SD card. That was strange. I even attempted the format a few times because it kept saying my SD card was bad and needed a format. So I kept formatting until it stopped giving me the message. All of my stuff was still on it. I just decided to exchange the SD card today just to be safe.

I had issues with my 64gb SanDisk when it was formatted exfat. Since I formatted to fat32 I have not had an issue.
Ive been having this issue for awhile now too. At first I had a 16gb sandisk Class 10 formatted fat32 and it randomly would remove itself, formatted it to exfat and a few days later same thing. So I thought it may be a bad card even though it was only a few months old, went out and bought a Lexar 32gb class 10, formatted it via the phone before storing anything to it (formatted as Fat32).....few days later, unexpectedly removed again. I then formatted fat32 in my PC after unchecking the quick format box, worked for a few days and today it removed itself again....So at this point Im kinda at a loss? Im going to try the paper trick as suggested by oscarthegrouch, and see if that makes any difference cause this is getting pretty annoying. I also thought it may be a bug in the system but I recently updated to MG1 and this is still happening. Is this only happening to people that have rooted phones?
