I'm new to this forum, so sorry if this has been asked loads of times before.
The HTC Desire cannot play most video files out of the box. What's considered the best android video player, with the most codec support?
I've managed to get two Quicktime MOVs to work but without sound (the rest don't, one is a 720p Robin Hood trailer, that looks amazing). The following don't work at all:
* AVI - Some DivX, some unknown
* FLV - Off You Tube
* RM - RealPlayer
* M4V
* MPG - MPEG1
The following work fine:
* 3GP
* WMV
* MP4
I particularly need a player that can handle DivX/Xvid and Quicktime MOV.
The best I can find is yxFlash. This supports:
# Supports mpg, avi, mp4, flv, mkv and wmv/asf files
# Mpeg1/2/4, H264 BP, Divx/Xvid, FLV1 and WMV7/8/9
# Mp3, AAC, WMA, AC3 and PCM
# Network Streaming (http, ftp, mms ...)
# Armv7 Neon Accelaration and Up to 720p DivX Playback for Cortex-A8 Based Devices.
Not Quicktime though (maybe some will work that are MPEG4). The free version only lets you play videos for 2 minutes long. It costs $9.90 (pricey!).
I'd rather find a free or cheaper alternative before shelling out nearly 10 dollars.
Thanks
I think there is nothing right now apart from yxflash which does AVI etc.
Its crap though this is what i think. Big down side of android is a good video player.
There is coreplayer being develop for android but it could be an other few years before we see it.

I'm really surprised that's the case but looking too and I cannot find much either. It's crazy. The HTC Desire has a wonder resolution. I read HTC plan to include DivX support in a future Desire firmware though.
I've just downloaded the English Wuzhenhua Player 4.1 from this forum. Maybe that's better.

Years! . They're losing money. Windows Mobile is on the way out. Thanks.
I've found yxflash to be pretty good.
It won't play any of my FLV files (contrary to what the site says) but it plays everything else nice enough. Sadly there is a noticeable lag at times though . Oddly despite the Market Place listing claiming "only 2 minutes of playback", I've had a video playing for over 3 minutes now, without problem.
Wuzhenhua on the other hand needs a lot of work. Sure it plays the FLV files (just about!). That's about the only good thing I can say about it. It crashes more than it doesn't. Thanks to the guy who translated it into English though.
The best video player is the one HTC ship with the Desire but it only plays .3GP, .WMV and .MP4. I guess the best solution right now is to transcode to .MP4 until HTC get around to releasing their firmware so the Desire can play DivX.
I find Act1 Video player to be the best so far.
Plays without hiccups 99% of the time

Yes WM is a different platform, As i've heard from betaboy that Android NDK is still not very good for coreplayer and until google will come out with good NDK there wont be coreplayer for Android.
Also coreplayer team is bit slow too as they were talking about new version of coreplayers for at least two years now.
Only Samsung Galaxy S is going to cover lot of codec in MKV.
Its a big downside of Desire as it cant play DIVX, XVID etc natively.

I've just installed that thanks. That is a nice player. It only looks to support the formats that are native to the phone though. So in my case .3GP, .WMV, .MP4.
Meaning it's not much different to the native HTC one really. I do like it can resume from where you left off though. yxflash has a neat feature whereby for .3GP, .WMV, .MP4 it defaults to the HTC Player for these formats and uses it's own interface for other formats. I like that as it's better.

DivX at least is coming:

The native HTC Video Player was able to play a Robin Hood (2010) 720p Quicktime trailer of mine. It looked amazing and played fine, no sound though. It was more luck than anything else it played.
rename them..
For your .m4v you can just change the extention to .mp4, and the desire movie player will play them back just fine.
It's not "out of the box" playback, but it doesn't take you long to rename them and the files doesn't change (like if you converted them to another format).
I did it with a couple of files when i threw a movie folder onto the sd card using astro. Not much hassle.
m4v's are just apple re-branded mp4's.

I noticed that after posting thanks. It turns out (using GSpot) they're MP4 files anyway. I'm pretty sure M4V and MP4 are the same thing anyway.

Thanks for info about 720P playback but without sound which isn't big issue as there is a small work around to fix it.

Thanks Hassan. Good tip. These are all just wrappers after all, with largely MPEG4 inside them. I'll do just that. It would be good to get some working 720p Quicktime trailers on my HTC Desire.
I'll have a look at Prince of Persia, thanks.
I have tried this with movies downloaded from itunes but although the file converted shows the movie reel icon when I try to play it says that the movie cannot be played. Were you simply renaming the .m4v to mp4 using astro?
Converted from what? To what? You'll need to rename it to .mp4 yes. Try this:
In ASTRO, choose "Open As --> Video"
Does it play now? I've found this. I have to "Open As" for it to work from Astro.
It works fine using YXFlash though and nicely still opens .mp4 files using the default HTC Video Player (i.e - if HTC Video Player cannot play the file, like DiVX it uses the YXFlash Player and if it can, it uses the HTC Video Player, all from YXFlash).

hi guys,
I'm glad having a Xperia since last week....but I'm unable to run videos fluently - even with TCPMP 0.72RC1.
There was a "James Bond" trailer von the device when I have bought it, but it runs with 1 frame per 5-10 seconds!
even other movies don't play fluently.
Yesterday I did a hard-reset....but this didn't help.
Does anyone have the same problems?? Or a solution for this probs?
I even tryed out the "Turbo Speed X1 - Up to 8 X faster Performance than standard setup"...but even this didn't help...
//edit: there's no branding on the device...ROM: 1.02.932.3 from 08/29/2008
hi Cysign,
first i have to say sorry... i cannot help you with your specific problem.
but i have got a related problem. the bond trailer runs ok with my x1i... so i tried to rip a dvd for the x1 by myself using the following conversion-settings:
video: 480x270, h264, mp4, 25fps (pal) @ 796kbps
audio: aac @ 128kbps
this resulted in a 706mb file.
i copied the file via active sync to the 8gb flash card in the phone. all went well so far but when i watch the movie it looks somewhat "artificial". meaning that this movie looks like it was made by using a home-videocamera. (i hope this discribes it a little)
the bond trailer doesnt have this videoish appearance.
what went wrong ? are my settings exceeding the capabilities of the x1? or do you have other suggestions ? (btw, i tried to use the same settings as the bond trailer)
greetz
Did you guys trying increasing the buffering size in ur players? I personally use core player 2.0 and it plays perfectly but sometimes and this is rare but its like the graphics gpu is failing or something. All the images appear on the screen very slowly but a hard reset usually fixes that.
Guys, when I try to play the Bond movie, it prompt for license cert etc but it is still not able to play. How to resolve this problem?

which player?
that bond trailer ran pretty good on my x1a. i cant remember if i watched the whole thing or just to see how it ran but from what i did see, it was good. no lag or freeze up. i played it on the standard media player that came on the phone. i didnt play it thru the panel tho, i just played it by opening up media player. how were you running it? my x1a is pretty much all stock with no hacks on it.
i also had some movies that i ripped in .3gp format and from what i can tell, it also ran pretty good. i ripped these movies for my other phone (lg cu500) and my nokia internet tablet and so it also runs pretty good on the x1a.
i like ripping in .3gp because i can play it on any of my devices and the files are about 100mb per two hour movie. i think my resolution that i ripped my dvd was something like 480 x 240 but im not for certain. its kind of funny that not all devices will run mpeg because of the different variations of mpeg. kind of dissapointing when a product says it will a certain format but when you try and run it, it just so happen it doesnt support that perticular format.
Try Media Xperiance Panel, it is by far better than Core/TCPMP/WMP.
I think the media panel is the only app that support Hardware Accelerate in X1 at the moment.
but it doesn't play most formats and even some of my mp4s sadly
Similar problem here.
The only vid that plays well is the bond trailer.
All others (wmv) are played but with a horrible fps rate
Tried to start media player directly from the today screen and via panel... no difference.
Looks like a fast slideshow.

i tried both, playing via wmp and the media panel but the appearance of my ripped movie stays the same....
there is no stuttering but (as i said in my first post) it looks like it has something to do with the framerate. ?

I tried a My name is Earl episode a few days ago. It's in 1280x720 resolution so I thought it would be a good starting point for a test.
I managed to play it ok i media player at 800x448 or around there, but only with 600 kbps bitrate. It looked ok and played fairly smooth. I would say around 20 fps.
For recoding I used the Xvid4PSP program with modified default MP4 profile.
You need to use x264 (AVC) profile 4.2 and AAC LC (Low complexity). Then it should play with hardware acceleration.
800x480 resolution may be overkill, since the pixels are so tiny, so I would recommend a much lower resolution (600x'something') and around 600 kbps bitrate for a nice result.
I just run the 350mb (ish) avi files direct in Coreplayer.
Res is around 640x352.
TV shows are fine, and IronMan only had a few drops in the high action scenes.
Here's what I do with my videos:
Open PocketDivXEncoder on my pc.
Select HD-TV as the option.
Select the movies I want to endcode.
Drop video quality to 70.
Audio qaulity to maximum.
Resize video (keeping aspect ratio) to 400 horizontal.
Encode.
These all play in Coreplayer smooth as silk
I personally do absolutely nothing. I download a movie and just place it on my sd card and watch it through core player. It plays smooth with no compression at all.
try using spb mobile dvd to convert your movies, i've done this with some movies that didn't play smoothly and now they all work perfectly
Im currently using TCMP im just wondering if anyone has any ideas for the optimal settings for it
Cheers

what is a recommended buffer rate for watching videos?
Can someone confirm that the only player that utilises the media accelerator is the media panel?
I had thought that WMP also uses the accelerator.
Also what are the codecs the accelerator uses?
I've tried various MP4's and i've found only by lowering the resolution do I get smooth playback.
I'm currently going through the baselines for H.264 and found that baseline 3 does not play and baseline 1.3 does not get accelerated.
I'm currently (as I type) encoding a file with the baseline of 1 to see if that is accelerated.
I think we need to narrow down the exact codecs/media players/resolutions to use.

In super if you look in the video panel you can see the H264 Profile in the options section.
Click on the "H" button and the profiles pops open and select your baseline from there.
I've tried Baseline 1 now and still i'm not getting acceleration...the file still plays faster on Coreplayer than it does in the panel.
I'm wondering if this is because I have Jack's custom Rom using pubbas panel installer for the Media experience?
Also nobody answered me about whether or not WMP uses acceleration?
Hy guys, I tryed several times to make a video format that runs with great quality and at the same time fast enough to watch it with joy.
I have the Titanium ENERGY ROM that came out on may 1.
TCPMP was allready in the ROM
installed the CorePlayer v1.3.6 Build-7427 for PPC
and using the WinMedia Player that also was in the ROM
have on the PC the Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate, HTC Encoder, the Any Video Converter and the MP4 for HD programs.
the only succesfully smooth video playback was the KillBill named movie that's properties are in the Core Player :
Format : Video Files (AVI, DIVX, GVI)

this is the only video that runs so perfectly that's almost too good to be true.
so the problem is that i can't find the good settings for any of the converters to give the output vide that' the same as that MAGICAL ONE.
If someone have an idea, please tell !!!!!
THX anyway.
I was overjoyed to see that Froyo JPO camera records in MP4 rather than in old cruddy 3GP.
And, oh the disappointment when i tried to use allshare (and twonky mobile) to play the recorded MP4s back (720p)... Its unplayable on PS3...
GAH...
Is there a way to fix the CAMERA to record standard MP4s ? I know my PS3 plays MP4s - i've tried that. But for some reason not Galaxy S generated content...

Any ideas ?
I think the MP4 in Froyo is a rewrapped 3GP file. That could be the reason why it can't be replayed.

ickyboo hit nail on the head though cant confirm whether Samsung use GP3 coding inside MP4 or not.
You have two chocies - wait for some clever person to hack our camera software and preferably put in h.264 coding within MP4 which would work on PS3, or wait for Sony to support our unknown format (unlikely).
If you have WMP11/Win7, that could work (playing to wmp and then and dlna/upnp it to your PS3 from pc), or do what i do, and use allshare through XBMC which works like a dream. Tversity might be another option but dont believe they support android yet.

Well, it plays on my pc, i can transcode it, sure, but it kinda defeats the purpose of allshare'ed or twonky'ed galaxy s as a media server.
I hope to stream from my phone directly to PS3.
I consider PS3 to be an adequate media player for my needs (if not for the lack of MKV support), but this whole MP4 malarkey is out of hand. Samsung screws up once again...
Can you post some mp4 movies so we can see how much is it better than 3gp on Eclair ?
Tnx

Hello XDA people,
I own an ePad and an HTC HD2.
When I put an MKV 720P file (probably encoded with x264) on my microSD card, the ePad plays it perfectly with Act one video player. When I try it using my HD2 its says "android media server died". And rockplayer can only software decode it, which is very slow and laggy.
Is there any way I can simply download and watch my HD TV series? The SD versions work but it's just not very sharp.
Tim
An hd movie played on the hd2 will only be 480x800, so it's still watching a sd movie in that case. >.>
That's true, however, when I grab the SD version of the TV show, it's 624x352 and a lower bitrate. So you can see a difference. Also, if I download the HD version I can still decide to watch it on my laptop and fully enjoy the resolution, rather than having to download the HD and SD version.
A friend with a Galaxy S tried to play an 720P MKV, and it plays it very well with hardware encoding, so I guess it's a driver issue?
Yes it is a driver issue, or more like it's not built in. Our snapdragon doesn't know how to process mkv files.

When you say "properly encoded with x264", what profile are you using? I used the wrong profile in Handbrake and ended up with choppy/laggy video on my HD2. Fixing the encoding options (read the tooltips on the Advanced tab in the latest version of Handbrake) results in a larger file (because it's compressed less-aggressively, so the player doesn't need to do so much work) that plays just fine on my HD2.
I've been ripping my DVDs and making .mp4s from them in Handbrake just fine. They're encoded to 720p and all play without any problems.
(Although Handbrake seems to have problems with using the correct height, but that's a HB problem).

I doubt it, especially because Leo is a WinMo device, not Android, which means hardware manufacturers will not provide drivers or code to achieve this.

@Splines
I actually ment 'probably', in this case the episode was downloaded from a newsgroup.
The video Data is:

What player do you use to watch the video's if I may ask?

(I'd linkify my links, but I"m a new users here and the forum software won't let me).
See the table here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC#Profile
From your video meta-data, it's encoded with the "High" profile. I'm not familiar with the H.264 decoding algorithms, but I'm willing to bet that you won't find any video player on your HD2 that can decode that video in real-time.
Most mobile devices adhere to the Baseline Profile (BP). Here's what you need to do: Go and install Handbrake. Run it and create a new device profile (click "Add" in the bottom right-hand corner).
Switch to the Advanced tab and make sure yours looks like this: i.imgur.com/AEkFf.png
Right click on the new profile you created, and click "Save Changes".
Now, you might need to muck with the picture size on the first tab, but that's not too important since you're just trying to get the video playing smoothly.
Load your source video, and encode it to a new file. It should play just perfectly on your HD2.
I've tried several video players, and when I had the encoding options wrong, the only one that worked was VitalPlayer, but I had artifacts all over the screen. With these settings, any player that actually works in my ROM loads and plays the video just fine (ironically, VitalPlayer doesn't work in the ROM I have flashed right now). The stock video player, Meridian, mVideoPlayer, Zimly, all work fine. I suspect that the majority of the video players in the app store use the same engine to decode the video.
I tried recoding the file. It now plays better, but still only 10fps and the video is running behind. No other options I guess? Recoding to 800x480 is way to much of a hastle for me.
This is a major setback, I'll see if someone with a Desire can test it.
Get a better version of RockPlayer and try again. Look at the ARMv7 links on the right...
http://rockplayer.freecoder.org/index_en.html
I found that a LOT better than the version available on the market.
Too bad, tried the latest version and got the same results.
Do you think a desire build would be better since it also has a snapdragon cpu?

Hi guys,
I can play normal SD avi's etc perfectly. 720p MKV's video also clean, but no sound.
Tried Moboplayer - no sound
VPlayer - sound, video laggy
mVideoPlayer - doesnt play the 720p mkv
Running 10.1v on Android 3.0.1
I recently came across BUZZPlayer on the market and I've been in contact with them via email, where they claim its plays any file without conversion, and can also play from a smb share...
Havent tried it yet.....has anyone had any experience with this?
rockplayer?
Do you know what audiocodec is used in the mkv?

Hi, vlc reports:
Type: Audio
Codec: A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52 )
Sample rate: 48000 Hz
Bitrate: 384 kb/s
I have no sound too when i use Hardware Decoding, when i use software i have sound but the frame rate drops and is unwatchable, i`m using rockplayer
I've tried all kinds of video players. I just don't think Android 3.0.1 or 3.1 and Tegra 2 are capable of playing 720P MKV files.

you cannot be serious! lol
on a more somber note, i'm new to this game but i hope your statement is untrue.
if not, this is an epic fail.
The main reason I bought the tab for my dad was so he could freely sync between multiple computers without the help of iTunes and could stream/play most xvid and divx media
I can play some 720P AVI and MP4 files, but 720 MKV's have all been a no-go.
Either video is laggy/freezes. Audio is out of sync. Or no audio.
On Tegra 2 there are no hardware decoder for AC3 sound track (thanks to NVidia/Google/Dolby Licensing org etc. ), so when MKV uses Dolby sound - there is no hardware support so it has to be played in software.
Unfortunately, non of android players can play video with hardware decoder and sound with software (or they just not implemented that way).
Bottom line, 720p and up video is problematic on current Tegra2 devices.
You have couple options:
Sometimes, this issue may be lessen by overclocking Tegra2 from standard 1Ghz to 1.5Ghz - hefty 50% increase in performance, so it kind of manage to play 720p mkv files using software decoder...
Or just re-encode sound track into WMA or something which has hardware driver for Tegra2.

On the sticker covering the tablet screen, it clearly states it can play and record 720p and 1080p. Bastards! I suppose we will get HD playback when the device is obsolete? The point of getting the device when it comes out is so that we can enjoy features we never had before. Turns out, after they taken our money, that Samsung just lied to the world and their piece of crap cant actually play 720/1080p. There must be a codec out there that can do something, I mean come on, WTF.
What the hell is that dual core, Nvidia Tegra gpu device doing with all its hardware? !!!!!
EDIT: Ok, I've been in contact with the developers of BUZZPlayer on Android market. Apparently they claim it can play 720/1080, and that their player is one of the best. Its not free, but its cheap. I am going to give it a try this evening, but I am a bit skeptical. So far the only 2 apps I did buy were both non functional and I got refunded. The issue with Android market is theres loads of crap mixed in with the good stuff. I even see theres an app that filters out all the garbage apps from the market.
Will give an update after I've tested BuzzPlayer.
Apart from Buzzplayer, theres only VLC, which isnt finished yet, which we can hope plays everything. I specifically got this device cause it has the hardware so u dont have to convert stuff. I dont want to convert!
All of you pulling your hair out about thinking the GT10.1 cannot play HD video need to step away from the keyboard, make yourself a cocktail and take a deep breath. It will be okay, I promise. The GT10.1 can and does record and play HD video. For those of you trying to play .mkv files please understand that Matroska (.mkv) is nothing more than a container (think of it like a wrapper around your favorite candy). Inside that container are files for audio, video, subtitles, metadata, etc. The audio and video files are compressed into some format (codec) that can only be played correctly if the device doing the playing has the decoder to read said codec. Tons of people are having no issues playing 720p .mkv files simply because the audio and video codecs in that particular file are supported by their player. The most frequent video codec in .mkv containers is H-264. Audio on the other is typically found in AC3 (as this supports full Dolby Digital surround sound) but can be found in many different codecs. So, if your .mkv video file has H-264 video and AC3 audio but your player does not support either (or both) of these.... then your options are to transcode the audio or video to a supported format (which can be done while maintaining the .mkv wrapper mind you) or find a player that supports the code in your original file. Now, be aware that if you transcode, this results in exponential data compression and thus loss of data. So, audio loses its fidelity and video loses its clarity. Think what happens to the quality of an orginal letter or document when you make a photocopy of a photocopy of photocopy. In order to avoid this you must create the encodings from an uncompressed wave form (directly from the DVD or BluRay) and then place those in wrapper (like .avi or .mkv etc). This is the process of ripping a DVD.
None of this is new. It has been the case LONG before the GT10.1 was released. The perceived problem is exacerbated by people thinking (at no fault of their own) that .mkv (Matroska video) is simply some magical file format that delivers movies in full HD goodness. Its like everything else in the audio/video world on computers, it is always a function of codecs and decoders. E.g. just because I can speak German does not mean you understand me simply because we are having a conversation. You must also understand German.
Sorry for the diatribe, just wanted to clear the air on where the issue lies here. I do think that VLC will be solution for most everyone out there not knowing how to or not willing to play around with encoding audio and video. I know how to do this and I don't even want to do it. VLC should offer support for the popular .mkv file components out there and (most of) our woes will be over. Lets just hope VLC drops there app sooner rather than later!

Please do a easy search on google or on xda on Tegra2 video or Tegra2 mkv. Or go to forums about Asus Transformer and Motorola Xoom and you will find answers on all your video questions.
Its a known issue that Tegra cannot handle "high profile" video in .mkv container. Thats way some people wanted Exynos instead of Tegra.
All most every x264 video you download is high profile and need to
Galaxy tab can handle 720/1080 without problem if the video is coded in the right way.
A great program for converting video is DVDCATALYST and use the XOOM preset setting.
Or you can use this easy program that just change the container and audio so kt can be played on Tegra devices

First off, the GT10.1 can play HD mkv files, one is playing in the background as I am writing this. I will post some pictures and more info on the mkv file later.
second, like I said before, be aware that simply transcoding your audio and/or video to a different format results in exponential compression of the original wave form and thus data loss. If you are truly wanting to watch and listen to your movie in HD you must keep this in mind.

it'll play hd fine. you just have to follow the strict specs to make sure you have a playable file.
no ac3, no mkv container (you can transcode to .mp4 if it's not over high profile 3.1), and may struggle with multichannel audio if you're over SD resolution.
there are plenty of posts on how to transcode or reencode your files for playback on a tegra 2 device in the xoom and transformer forums.

Were in my previously post did i say that it wont play mkv?
The "problem" and that i was pointing at is that it cannot play mkv with "high profile". And 90% off all videos and series episodes that people download is just HP.
And HD is a wide word and can means many things for different users.
Is HD a video with bitrate ~4000kbps and resolution 1280*720? Or is it a video with bitrate ~30000kbps and 1280*720?
A video can have high resolution and still look really bad on screen and some videos have lower res and looks good.
Have had a Xoom for some months and i have found that DVDCATALYST is the easiest way to make your videos play fine on Tegra devices.

Like I mention before, there is no Tegra2 AC3 nvidia decoder/driver available.
I can see only AAC, DTS, MP3, WAV, WMA and WMA pro formats have some kind of hardware acceleration.
There is no way 3-party media player developers can write nvidia's hardware codecs ot its own, they just used them if available in corresponding media player (RockPlayer, VLC etc.)...
If hardware codec is not accessible then most of them use GPL software decoding libs.
So, I would not expect VLC or any other player can do any better then another one.
then how on earth does rockplayer manage to play AC3 sound when I choose Software decoding, but then the video is laggy. Switch to Hardware decoding and video is perfect, no sound....????
Really confused...

Because software decoding uses more resources and is not the ideal decoding solution (can be laggy). The software supports both the audio and video codecs, so they work.
The hardware doesn't support the audio codec, so no sound when in hardware mode.
That's why I love the Original Samsung Galaxy Tab 7. it has 720p/1080p high profile .mkv (no lag) playback, AC3, divx, xvid, .srt subtitle support. All with just a single core hummingbird SOC. (I just wish it were 10.1 inches)
I had high hopes for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, but Samsung didn't put as much effort into the movie player as they did with the 7.
Hopefully, now that Toshiba has issued a challenge with their new AT200 tablet, a Samsung Exynos tablet is just around the corner.
Not sure what people are confused about. MKV is dead, obsolete, and unsupported by current and all future devices. Stop using MKV and you wont have issues. No reason to be using MKV to begin with, no reason at all.

Can you make me a favor and test this 720p MKV sample I made, in all mkv supported players?
I just want to know if you have any lag or audio issues, thanks.
