Using "non" sony headphones with the x10...hmm - XPERIA X10 General

I have a pair of noise-canceling headphones that I want to use with the x10. They have the built in mic, with a single button, and also have the 3 rings around the jack/port ( which matches the stock sony ones )...
Well the strange thing is:
1. the mic button on other devices either mutes music, starts or pauses, double click for forward, etc...on the sony it does nothing...
2. it sounds like crap through the headphones..oops, altho, if I hold down the mic button, all of a sudden the sound is great, loads of bass, all good...if I let go of the button again, sound goes back to sh*t...
I've also noticed on the sony stock headphones, the mic button does nothing...nothing for calls or music.
Anyone else experience anything like this or have any suggestions ?

I have a set of noice cancelling ear buds (from a Sony Walkman) and they only work in the walkman itself, I've tried them with my X10 (and even x1) they sound terrible.
Did your headphones come with a specific MP3 player/phone? Have you tried used them in other devices or only the x10?

I had exactly the same using a Sony headset on an HTC phone. It only sounded great one holding the button. Probably the Sony headsets are wired different.

what kind of headphones are you using? I have tried using ultimate ears and westone in ear monitors with no problems. Spectacular sound quality, actually (for a phone)

Im using a set of Blackberry noise-cancelling headphones...I didn't get them with a blackberry, rather bought them from Bestbuy, so from what I presume they are a good quality set...they "3 rings" around the 3.5mm jack match the stock sony ones exactly...
I've used them in BB, Nexus One, and an HTC HD2...All have worked, even worked using the button to pause, FF music...
I know one the Nexus One, there was a setting in one of the media players that had something to do with the headphones, I disabled the option, and it worked...Can't find anything like that on the X10.

my Nokia N95 headphones work great on the x10. the sad thing is that i cannot control volume and tracks with those...

duh. wong toplc

Use in Car through Aux in

hi,
I have been using a Nokia phone with a 3.5 mm audio jack to connect it to my aux-in of the car and listen to music as well as make or take calls. The phone mic picks my voice quite well and I hear back the calling party through the car speakers.
Does the same work with HTC Touch HD too?
Update: I have connected the HTC Touch HD to my car's Aux in and it works well with the THD's mic picking up my voice easily. I had echo on a couple of calls but would like to check for its recurrence to believe that's some problem with unit or with the connectivity.
Afraid not mate.
When you plug something in the earphone socket, it assumes there's a mic plugged in too, like when you plug in a hands-free kit.
I've got exactly the same setup and didn't click what the problem was the first time I took a call. I just sat there like a pratt, shouting "HELLO" at my phone! lol
There may be a software workround for this, but not that I'm aware of.
I use the same approach.. but currently even though I am using a Belkin cable to a pretty neat deck.. the sound is completely off.. Treble is too high.. and My faithful kenwoods which would handle the full Volume of my N95-2 with ease are now cracking up.
Any ideas??

Ideally, you should have the phone volume at about 75% of its max (between the phone volume itself, and the volume on the music player application), and control overall volume from the deck. If it still sounds dodgy after that, mess about with the equalizer on whatever player you're using, or the htc audio booster.
If anything, mine's a little quiet, but I've not tried messing with output volume settings in Tweak HD. I tend to have to have my deck turned up about 70-80%, whereas I normally have the radio at about 20-30%.

Asking this question to all. Is anyone aware of any software to use HTC Touch HD mic while using a 3.5 mm headphones through its audio jack.
not both speakers and mic are off when in headset mode
it's a hardware thing
but like with htc headsets you can connect external speakers and mic to the conntors and it works
easy way is to tear the headset apart and solver in the stuff you want to the connector which came with the headset

Mine works fine setup like this. I've got a 3.5m jack coming out and going into the back of my headunit. I can make calls without a problem. The phone seems to realise the connected jack doesn't have a mic so uses the internal one.
The first time I tried it though the person at the other end couldn't hear me but finally worked out this was because the cradle I was using was blocking the mic on the bottom of the phone! I quick readjustment of the cradle and everything was fine.
Sound quality when playing tunes has always been fine but the voice quality aint that great, the person at the other end sometime complains about echo.

Hmm.... I'll have to have a play with that then, as it was a total failure for me previously. I definitely didn't have the mic blocked, as my cradle holds the phone by the sides.
Cheers for that - I'll have a play about.
How about something like this?
http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Audio-3.5-mm-Adapter-with-Microphone-for-iPhone/3440143/product.html?cid=133635
(iPhone example but googling "3.5mm microphone output" finds you more, all about £3)
"How about something like this?"
there is not standart for how 3.5mm jacks with mics work as in the width of the ring and such
doubt very very very much that iphone converter would work with anything but an iphone
Thats a good idea. I havent tried this myself but its not experience that the hadware needs an attached mic when plugging the 3.5mm into speakers. I use high quality headphones with no attatched mic to listen to music on the HD and can take calls via the phone or skype by using the headphones and the phone mic.

Same setup as me for the last 12 months. I have to play around with the volume setting on the HU / HD all the time - its not ideal but the internal mic seems to pick up voice fine (and echo!).

Sound distortion playing music with some headphones

I have found some strange behaviour that i'm hoping someone else can test out on their Galaxy S.
I have found that some headphones seem to work fine with the phone for music playing but others result in the sound being distorted with the vocals being very faint as if the left and right channel are cancelling each other out (with vocals generally being on left and right channel).
The packaged Samsung headphones appear to work properly although the quality seems average. I tried my iPhone headphones but these resulted in the strange sound distortion described above. I also tried a pair of cheap Sennheiser which were a free give away with a purchase from Richer Sounds and they worked well. Another pair of no-name cheap headphones exhibited the same distortion problems as the iPhone headphones.
Oddly, the FM radio sounded ok with all the headphones, it's just the music player that has the problem. I have also tried a couple of other music apps including the doubletwist player to rule out the software.
I'm considering taking it back to the shop to swap for a replacement. I'd be grateful if anyone could try out some headphones (particularly iPhone ones) on their Galaxy S and report their results to see if this is just a quirk with my phone or the Galaxy S in general.
Many Thanks
I just need some clarification because I know that a headset, and not headphones, is delivered with the Iphone. If it was a headset then I might suspect that different Iphones use different polarity as opposed to Samsung. Try out the Samsung headset on the Iphone.
EDIT:
Obviously not the problem. I must have skipped over the radio experience.
I can't post a link to it, but I remembered that GSMArena did a thorough review of the SGS. If you find your way to it, go to page 6 and see the sound chart at the bottom. SGS is superior in sound to iPhone. Perhaps the iPhone headset/headphones and the cheap ones are not sufficient for the SGS? I'm guessing
I had a similar experience when I tried to use the Samsung Spica headset on my HTC Hero. It seems that it might be a difference in polarity as suggested above.
Does all the headsets that give distorted sounds have a microphone on them? (E.g. not headphones)
the iPhone's headphones have extremely high distortion regardless of the media using to play them. The SGS is probably just overpowering them because they are very loud headphones as well/easily powered.
No it's nothing to do with them being overpowered.
I have an expensive pair of etymotic in ear headphones that are exhibiting the very same problem. Strangely I found a fix. They have a microphone on them and pressing in the answer button on them seems to fix the problem. I have taped the button down now and everything works perfectly. The second that button is released though, everything goes back to being faint, muffled and distorted.
Odd!
PS. This isn't just with the music player. I noticed it first watching a video.
It sounds like Samsung has their own way of producing the 3.5mm port with regards to the microphone support.
The Samsung headset distorts music on my HTC Hero.
The HTC headset distorts music on my gfs Galaxy Spica
To be clear, are you saying the problem only affects headsets with microphones? I have etymotic er4p headphones and it would be a deal breaker if they didn't work right with this phone.
If its only showing up in the media player, check that you havent enabled the 5.1 button in the the top right of the player. This can really screw with the sound and entire frequency ranges can be lost. I'm guessing this is whats happening.
The default headphones work fine for me if a little tinny, but with my Senheissers, the results are very pleasing. Apart from a slight gap between tracks that should seemlessly play through, I prefer using it to my iPod Touch. Being able to change tracks and volume without unlocking is a nice feature.
I threw my iPod headphones out years ago, they're the most ridiculous design ever, with the cable tapping the inside sleeve all the time when you walk or run.

It sounds like that the problem is with headsets with microphones, yes. Not sure if it happens with all 3rd party headsets w/ mic though.
Considering you have etymotic, and ClownShoes a few posts up have problems with this brand, I guess you're out of luck unless you wanna tape the answering button like he did.
The er4p is just headphones, so it sounds like i'm in luck.
Got my GS a few days ago and im having exactly the same problem with the Etymotic hf2 Headset with mic. So yeah it looks like it the mic that causes the problems.

It's a little bit crude, but taping the button down does work.
I have the same issue with with Monster Studios even with the cable without the integrated mic. Would be great to have some sort of fix.
Headphone issues
Just thought I would post what I knew about the issue, both me and my dad purchased the same pair of headphones to use on mp3 players (the headphones are ultimate ears metro fi 220 vi's if I remember correctly, these have an in-line microphone as well as a single button for answering calls and to control music playback). Whilst I experienced no distortion when using them on my iPod Classic, my Dad's Creative player would produce the issues described above - he found that either taping the button down or slightly pulling the headphones out would solve the issue however it ended up annoying him so much that he went back to using another set of headphones.
I don't know what causes the issue but I just thought I would let people know
i have some sennsihaur sport headphones which work fine no problems. i also a monster fm transmitter in the car.. again no problesm.. just make sure the volume is not on max but 1 setting below max.
Hmmmm, a few problems here. Obviously the standard Samsung headphones are fine, no humming, no background noise. However if I connect the following:
1. Standard Apple iPhone (with mic) loads of background noise, humming etc
2. Shure (no mic) loads of background noise, humming etc
3. B&O (no mic) loads of background noise, humming etc
4. Shure (with mic adaptor) loads of background noise, humming etc greatly reduced by pressing the mute key.
Using the Shure adaptor with the others resulting in the same as 4.
Needless to say I'm not happy!
That's too bad. Not being able to use my Shure with the phone renders it useless for music and that IS important.
In the SERVICE MODE *#*#197328640#*#* there is an audio menu
there you can change the headset settings too like NR noise reducion.
i did not test and changed the settings but when i had the samsung omnia2 last year
i had some problems with my headset and fix it in in the sevice menu.
when you gonne do some tests write down the orginal settings before you try.
hope this will help some of you..... and post the results
im sure its the jack, cos the galaxy s has a 4pole trrs at left/right/mic/ground
iphone compatible headset have a 4pole trrs at left/right/ground/mic
thats why pressing the mic button clears up the sound as it closes the circuit
so it a matter of finding an adaptor that switches the mic and ground terminals
I have a tf10vi and im trying to diy one
will post the results
Just saw the post and thought I would check mine again, not that I noticed anything....anyway tried few songs and different types and all are sounding amazing, I use Sure 530 so music needs to be no lower than 256 to get the best out of the phones, most of my music tracks are 320bit.

Replacement headphones

Anyone knows what headphones + mic + control will work with the Focus?
I love the original ones!! but I haven't found any option with the same buttons
Thanks
I have broken my original ones and found out the Beats and skull candy which have a microphone are not compatible... sound goes through but microphone does not pick up sound.
I did find a few sites claiming compatibility with V-moda's vibe duo headsets and have ordered them online and will arrive today. I will post an update if the mic works with Focus.
EDIT; if you like my comments please give me a thanks

Thanks, please let me know if they work. Those v-moda's has the 3 buttons? in the remote control?
The original ones are perfect! I really like them even versus one expensive phillips ones with noise cancelling electronics
The v-moda's arrived and work perfectly. they don't have the three buttons but you can answer calls and what not... the sound quality is honestly phenomenal, they sound better than the beats headphones that I returned because of MIC incompatibility.
they are just as pricey as the Beats running you about 100 bucks but it is way worth it

so i tried another set of headphones. this time the headphones with an in-line remote that came with the third gen ipod. Same things work such as the klipsch, pause, play, skip, and backwards work. you can also use this and klipsch to answer calls but the mic doesn't work so its kind of pointless. the volume buttons don't work either.
i really would love to find better headphones than the stock ones, i like good quality headphones
Have you guys tried the OEM headphones from the Captivate?

[Q] Headphone problems

Hey peeps, new here. Having trouble with my headphones or rather 3.5mm jack, maybe you guys can help out.
Having just moved from the iPhone to my new xperia Arc. I brought over the headsets, a klipsch s5i. However it doesn't work properly with the phone. It as though there a fuzzy filter placed over the sound, only when i placed the buttons in the in-line mic, then will the music ring clearly. It happen with headphones that have in-line buttons, please advise.
THanks in advance
Welcome to SE. That is how it is with the x10, and x1. When you take SE's headphones to use on another devise (eg. Watch movies on ipod or laptop), you have to depress the button to get clear sound.
The solution is to use half of SE's head phones:
Connect your is5 to the lower half of SE headphones, then plug to the Arc's headphone jack. (Makes for an extreeeemly long headphone set, don't it? Hahahaha!)
To use the Arc's headphones, pull out the top half and connect it to laptop to listen. But your face wil have to be real close to the laptop! Hahahaha! Woooo!

Is anyone else having the same problem???? PLease help me out as this is a really brand new one and i spent some hard earned cash here(no offence guys)
I don't get that..

i use a pair of Denon AH-360 in ear buds and the sound quality is awesome! far better than my ipod and on a par with my x-series walkman.
nice...... atleast one things clear that its not a default problem and its a problem on mine.... can i get a full mobile replacement????? I got it from Sony exclusive showroom.. And how do i take a complete backup instead of just contacts or something.... and how do you completely wipe out data from it ie the passwords and mails stored in it......
I use the cord that comes with my X10 and the earbuds from the Pureness.
The sound is epic! Love it The ear buds from my mw600 sound alright too, still better than the stock Arc ones.

Some headphones not working.

Hi,
I have a pair of xiami piston headphones and they work fine with my older phone (galaxy s3) but with my 6P they are not detected by the phone. I can't use them to listen to music or make calls.
I tried a pair of generic headphones and they do work. Is there some headphones that are simply incompatible with the device?
Yes I had the same experience. My samsung headphones from my galaxy s5 can't be used to make phone calls and if you try to use the volume adjustment buttons it pauses playback. Another pair of off-brand headphones I bought at duane reade work just fine for making calls. It is strange because w/ my galaxy I could use apple headphones or really any brand and they all worked fine. They should all work exactly the same.
I just hope this is a software compatibility issue with the in-line mic/controls and not a hardware issue. I have three pairs of pistons 2's that I used on a regular basis with my oneplus.

That's odd that audio would completely fail.
I just tried another headphone pair I have. They are Klipsch Image S4i and the middle button works, even though these are iPhone specific headphones (hence the i in the name). The volume buttons on it don't do anything.

Isn't there an app that can remap the "input" it sees from the headphones?
I'm encountering issues across ALL headphones with inline buttons, including Sony, Beats, and the Project Fi headphones. I'm on my second device now (RMA'd the first to see if it was device-specific), and all exhibit the same issue: double-click to skip track fails when the device is locked after a certain number of presses, and recogntion of the inline button is generally sporadic when the device is locked.
HOWEVER! Everything is perfect when the device is unlocked! So this has to be a software issue, right?
i'm having issues where the headphones seem to be working, but the mute button is not muting the headphones (but they do mute the call). so i hear EVERYTHING in my ears. its like a weird loopback.

My S4i headphones can control music (pause/unpause) with the screen off. I have Smart Lock enabled with my Moto 360 though, so not sure if that makes a difference. I also finally updated to MDB08L this morning. I was stuck on MDA89D until I manually sideloaded the MDB08K OTA (then the MDB08L OTA was downloaded by the phone).
I just tried my V-Moda Crossfades and those still are not able to control anything with the screen lock or unlocked (last time I had used them was before the software update)

it wasn't such a nice feature as i was walking from my car and the mic was rubbing on the zipper of my jacket and i could hear it and the wind in my ears. if i covered the mic with my hand, the sound went away, so it seems like there is definitely a software issue.

I get that when using the Klipschs, but it's the vibration traveling through the wire and into my ears (since they are in-ear headphones), and it is annoying.
i use Apple EarPods. $29. love them.
My Xiaomi Pistons were the only set of headphones that didn't work at all (music played through front-facing speakers and not the headphones). All other headphones I own seem to have the same compatibility issues as all other Android headsets vs iPhone made headsets in regards to the in-line buttons working or not.
I hate in-ear/noise-cancelling/over-ear options since I use headphones while walking around the city and still prefer to still hear what's going on around me. Apple EarPods work but the in-line volume buttons don't work. Play/Pause/Answer/End button works fine though. My only other option that I've discovered is the Amazon Fire Headset. They are similar pods that don't isolate sound and all buttons on the headset work fine.

mine didn't work as well. however, my amazon ones worked and i could also use vol up and pause, but vol down wasn't working.
So now my headphones are working apparently, the inline mic controls, pause/play volume up and down now work.
Using the Sennheiser Mm30g.
The Bose QC25s work like a charm along with the inline controls.
But...you need to buy the "made for Android" version.
I also have the pistons and they no longer work
My jaybird bluebirds x work perfectly. Need to test in my Lexus, however, pairing went fine so expect it will be ok.
