HSPA not working? - HD2 General

I've had the phone for a couple of weeks now, and while 3G works pretty regularly, and I see pretty quick web, I've NEVER seen the "H" symbol indicating HSDPA in use. I have it enabled, but no go...and I've been downtown Philly, downtown Orlando, and King of Prussia PA area. H should be working somewhere in there...

Stock ROM doesnt have the H icon I believe. So while I'm sure its active and connected, its only going to say 3G. I didn't get the H icon until I flashed Energy ROM. It does change from H to 3G from time to time

All the H means is that your data connection is working at that time. It does not mean you have HSPA.

Huh, the manual on the stock rom says that 3G and H will both show depending on the connection. Any other way to check? I guess a speed test...

getting an H symbol?

I'm kind of confused. After flashing cyan's rom, my service keeps switching between 3g and H. This has not happened prior to me flashing the rom though. What is H? Is it a fixable problem?
Could be wrong, but it's probably H for HSDPA
Oooh its actually a bonus for me at least, since before, my Nexus showed 3G whther it was connected to the faster HSDPA or to 3G (Unlike my Hero, which showed H or 3G)
will have to give CM Rom a go once my Nexus arrives back from HTC
Dayz
Cyanogen's ROM enabled the notification if you are on HSPA network. I beleive you will get 3G if your network changes to UMTS (depends on your location). The stock ROM shows 3G even if you are on the HSPA network.
Ohhhh alright. I understand then. It still bugs me though lol
Yes i can verify this is the case, reason why i jumped ship to cynogens rom

since by default the phone is after the fastest avail option, it tries to get to 3G. if and when you are in the area with uncertain 3G coverage, it could scan and switch to 3G, then to HSDPA (hence - H) or even EDGE (E)
I have this mess on the stock N1 - 3G-H-E changing constantly in some areas.
bad thing is that in such case my data stalls:-( I guess it has nada to do with Cyan's ROM. fwiw
No he must have done something, normally Nexus only shows 3G even if there's HSDPA.
I have HSDPA and here with Stock ROM it only shows 3G, but you can see in the Settings at Status that you've got HSDPA.

Actually, HSDPA is faster than "3G" (which I'm assuming is actually UMTS), so your phone will use HSDPA whenever it can, then downgrade to 3G if HSDPA isn't available, then EDGE, then GPRS. HSDPA is actually considered "3.5G, 3G+ or turbo 3G" according to its Wikipedia entry.

He did do something. Someone already asked him on Twitter and he answered here.
This reminds me of my times with Windows Mobile where you'd change a registry setting to make the indicator show you had an EDGE connection instead of always showing G (for GPRS)
Quite nice, I was missing this on Nexus

did you even read what I wrote? The stock ROM has the H icon but for some reason its disabled so that only the 3G icon shows up if you have HSPA. Cyanogen simply enabled the H icon to be usable.
I wonder why though, they would disable it...
I cant think of any solid reasons, and if it is in-fact better then "3G", You would think they would want people to know that they have a faster connection present..
but anyways, thanks cyanogen

Given the confusion in this thread alone, which is presumably made up of people who know more about their phones than the general public, I think it's reasonably obvious why it's disabled. The phone companies have spent lots of money and time marketing "3G" to the public - most people will know what you're talking about if you say 3G, almost none of them will know what HSDPA is, and I doubt the cell phone company wants to spend the time to explain that it's actually better than standard 3G to every customer. It's just that much easier to make it say "3G" and be done with it.
ISTR that my Hero and Touch Diamond2 before that, and Touch Cruise before that, all showed a 3G symbol on hsdpa until you were actually downloading something - then it changed to show a H before returning to a 3G when stopped downloading.
I think!

My Post was regarding this, it can't be that has H in display with stock ROM
So, this 'H' HSDPA signal display should be a fix in the OTA update?
Is there a possibility that someone answer here and explain how to enable H icon showing?
I think it's in framework-res.apk but don't know where exactly...
I don't want to install a cyanogenmod rom or others to have it. Who have already done it, could share that information with us...this is a forum..

I want to enable the H icon on the stock ROM.
Rooted phone, custom recovery, locked bootloader.
Is this possible?

I'm not able to decompile framework-res.apk to source...i've done some tries but with apktool that's not possible...
It is not sufficient open it with winrar or similar because config.xml is in the core....

So my 3g doesn't work...always switches to HSPDA and then works.

Title says it all. When i have NO HSPDA I become screwed and I have to revert to EDGE otherwise I have no data connection. I haven't tried it out of town yet, but it's ridiculous. It says I'm on 3g, but then switches when I start a speedtest. Is that just because I'm always in HSPDA? Any ideas?
I'm on the Desire ROM. I don't think it's the rom though, because this happened on Cyanogen.
HSDPA is only on when necessary, when it isn't, your on 3G. You're in an HSDPA area, so when you use data your carrier bumps you up to HSDPA.

Assuming you're in the U.S. and on T-Mobile, this thread covers your issue:
3G --> H Data problems
Cheers,
Kermee
Ahh much thanks. So in theory if I leave the HSPDA area my 3g will work because it isn't trying to switch?

If you leave an HSPDA area and only UMTS (3G) & EDGE are available, then in theory, yes. The data will transfer over 3G or EDGE. It's normal for the N1 to "idle" with the "3G" icon, but when you're actually doing data transfer, it'll switch to "H" if it's available.
In other words... nothing is broken. =)
Most people are confused by the "H" because on the *Stock* ROM, the "3G" icon doesn't differentiate between "UMTS/3G" and "HSPDA"... It'll always display 3G with either technology. The *Custom* ROM's differentiate which technology the handset is talking with the tower in regards to HSPDA and UMTS.
Cheers,
Kermee

Recent 3g prob: UMTS only, no HSPA any more

After posting in the wrong thread...sorry mods, wasn't thinking...thought I'd try this here.
I recently purchased an un-sub N1 for T-Mobile in the Melbourne, FL area. It has been painful moving from AT&T because the speeds that I've been getting on HSPA SpeedTest.net have been 700kbps down and 300kbps up consistently. As to my issue now, I noticed that my phone never switches from UMTS(3g indicated in the notification area) to HSPA any more. It used to stay in UMTS until data was used and then switch to HSPA. All over the area over multiple towers this has happened.
My wife has a stock N1 so I'll check her phone and see if it uses HSPA at all although with the stock radio she stays on EDGE most of the time while my phone, in the same car is on 3g but that's another problem.
Also, I do have the phone set to WCDMA only.
Can anyone think of a reason on my end that this could happen?
Rick
I think t-mobile is doing something on their end. I lost WCDMA usage after 6pm last night until about 11 pm.
(I'm in south florida)
I was having a similar issue in Orlando a few days ago. I agree with JCopernicus and believe its on Tmobile's end because I'm in Phoenix right now and its working fine.
I've been leaving my connection type on GSM auto (PRL) and I'm still connected to 3G/H 90% of the time but I have noticed a significant battery improvement. Check it out when tmo gets their 3g working right in your area.
Are there benefits to GSM prl over WCDMA preferred or always besides the obvious scenario when 3g is unavailable?
I am in the north Houston Tx are and I have been seeing some really odd stuff. At home I am full bars 3g and get 600-700 down, then drive over to a mall by me and get the H up top and no internet at all, it simply will not work, but it is HSPDA(two weeks ago) now in the same area it shows 3g with 1400 down. My house is always 600-700 but the mall area is acting really strange.

Saw the "H" symbol on Android.

I live in Bryan TX, about 75miles from Houston and as far as i know there is no HSDPA in my city yet. But i was just trying the Android build last night and it showed the H symbol for a bit. After that i never saw the H symbol, not in winMo, not in android. So was it just android reporting wrong information or was t-mobile actually testing HSDPA equipment at that time(highly unlikely but i wish they were).
Did anyone else experience android showing H even if you were not in HSDPA location?

Your proximity to A&M can cause all sorts of unexplained weirdness
lol seriously though, I understand that not only does Houston itself have HSPA+ now (it was in the first wave, Austin gets it next week), but also a large part of the surrounding area (mostly in your direction, and out towards the gulf too) are getting regular HSDPA very soon.
Note that on a stock winmo ROM you won't see an "H" in your taskbar, even if you have that type of connection...it won't display unless you're using a custom icon set (the default one is suppressed by the carrier)

Well....i see your location and i'm not surprised by your answer...and i do study at A&M.....but anyways...thanks for the response, will try installing a set of custom icons and try it out......but considering the speeds i get i dont think its HSDPA+....they dont even touch 1mbps.

Yeah I'm sure it's not HSDPA+ all the way up to you yet, I think they're just getting the 3G to regular HSDPA standards in the surrounding areas like yours.
Also note that even if you see an "H" in the display there, it only really means that you have a better connection with the tower, the backend elements to give you the real speed increase may or may not be in place TO that tower yet.
(to be honest with you, I couldn't really care less about the UT/A&M rivalry...I'm not from here. I just know I might get run out of town if I missed an opportunity to fire a shot like that lol)

Depeding on the Developer of the rom. Sometime they use the "H" just to show there is active data.
For example im in Madison TN and we have 3G but dont have H yet. On my phone though, using the Energy Series rom, my phone idles with a 3G but if I load a web page or trigger some kind of data activity, the 3G will turn to H and back to 3G when the data activity is done. Same with some Android Roms, they change to H for data activity and back to 3G when the phone is idle.
I mite not be 100% accurate on that but I think thats how it works on the custom roms.
On a stock rom instead of 3G idle youll see H all day if you had hsdpa in your area.

thanks for the response, I guess you might be right there, but I'm not sure stock ROMs show the H icon, because i was in Houston last week, in the middle of downtown and my phone still showed 3G.
Staying on a similar subject can someone help me out with adding the H icon to the stock ROM, I do not want to add a custom taskbar, just looking for some reg edit, where it will show a simple H icon instead of the 3G icon when i'm in HSPA+ coverage.

[Q] Is HSDPA and HSPA+ the same thing?

Im coming from a couple HD2's and Vibrants and from my understanding, HSDPA is only 3.5G. Well, I only see HSDPA connection on my phone, and not a HSPA+ signal.
So am I even getting 4G?
You wont really see anything different to distinguish between the 2 besides running a speed test, Im on cm7 so I either see an "H" which is hsdpa or hspa+ but only a speed test over 3.5 will let me know for sure if I'm on the Hspa+ then theres the 3g icon which is usually umts but can be hspa, like I said just use the speed test ap thats the only way I ever know
also the highest Ive ever seen my 4G in los angeles is like 7.5mb on the normal it hovers around 4mb which never leaves me quite positive im on hspa+ because my wifes 3g Nexus S usually pulls down around 3.8
are you using T-Mobile or simple. I am having an issue as well but the plus sign is a huge difference.
i dont even know if you will ever see the HSDPA+! the way to check is go to settings>about phone>network> now here is where it gets tricky. where is says Mobile network type: it will tell you when you are on GPRS and EDGE! when my phone is on 3G is says UMTS, when it is in 4G, is says HSDPA. this is based on me doing speed tests while phone was on said network types. also i use a widget called "mobile signal widget". as you know the status bar never tells you the difference if you are on 3G or 4G, but the widget does! when the widget says 3G on it, when i flip to settings it says UMTS. when the widget says H on it, when i flip to the settings and it says HSDPA.
