[Q] Is HSDPA and HSPA+ the same thing? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im coming from a couple HD2's and Vibrants and from my understanding, HSDPA is only 3.5G. Well, I only see HSDPA connection on my phone, and not a HSPA+ signal.
So am I even getting 4G?

You wont really see anything different to distinguish between the 2 besides running a speed test, Im on cm7 so I either see an "H" which is hsdpa or hspa+ but only a speed test over 3.5 will let me know for sure if I'm on the Hspa+ then theres the 3g icon which is usually umts but can be hspa, like I said just use the speed test ap thats the only way I ever know

also the highest Ive ever seen my 4G in los angeles is like 7.5mb on the normal it hovers around 4mb which never leaves me quite positive im on hspa+ because my wifes 3g Nexus S usually pulls down around 3.8

are you using T-Mobile or simple. I am having an issue as well but the plus sign is a huge difference.

i dont even know if you will ever see the HSDPA+! the way to check is go to settings>about phone>network> now here is where it gets tricky. where is says Mobile network type: it will tell you when you are on GPRS and EDGE! when my phone is on 3G is says UMTS, when it is in 4G, is says HSDPA. this is based on me doing speed tests while phone was on said network types. also i use a widget called "mobile signal widget". as you know the status bar never tells you the difference if you are on 3G or 4G, but the widget does! when the widget says 3G on it, when i flip to settings it says UMTS. when the widget says H on it, when i flip to the settings and it says HSDPA.

3G on HTC TOUCH HD In NYC

Not trying to start any problems with my first posting but, The 3G icon on my touch hd has change a few times during since I purchased it, Does anyone know if this has been caused by any changes with EDGE.
What do you mean by has changed a few times? You never got 3G in New York did you?
The 850mhz bandwidth was converted from 2G to 3G. http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=2195
"AT&T is apparently changing the 2G and EDGE band, from its current 850Mhz to the weaker 1900Mhz. What that means, is that devices without 3G capabilities, like the original iPhone, will have to cope with the reduced coverage that the new 1900Mhz band has. In the other hand, devices supporting 3G networks like the AT&T Fuze, Tilt, Epix etc, will only benefit from this upgrade, as the 850Mhz band provides much better coverage, especially indoors."
Are you really getting a 3G signal in NYC? If that's the case I'm buying one
My Edge (E)icon has turned to G on about 20 occasions since purchase two week ago.Its not a steady G but will last about two minutes and then goes back to E
Interesting that you posted this. I am using my THD in NYC and NJ areas with T-Mobile USA. I have also noticed that the "E" icon on my THD had changed to "G" at some areas in NYC. But I have not noticed any difference in the data speed.
I just thought that my phone is able to acknowledge the T-Mobile 3G signal, but does not have to facility to access it. I do not know the technicalities behind it.
Isn't the "G" icon for a slower connection than EDGE? i.e. GPRS
yes!!!! now we have firm confirmation that touch hd is capable of 1G and 2G (EDGE)

What this means is that us in the usa better hope that we can enable 3G on the HD soon.
ya. even if tmobile does require both bands, one for down and one for up, it'd be nice if only 1 workded (down) and we were able to at least be able to DL quickly or something. any speed boost is better than none
Just to throw it out there:
Don't know if it is 3G but my "E" changed to "G" on few occasions, for few minutes here in LA, CA (T-mobile). I didn't sample the connection speed, however; thus, wasn't able to tell any difference with the download speed. Edge is good enough for my usage, tbh.

G = gprs 1G which is not 3G and it's slower than Edge 2G....
When I look at the G settings
Its says GPRS,3G

You guys...these are the icons you'd expect to see on your HD for GSM coverage in order of speed:
G - Normal GPRS data
E - Enhanced Edge data
3G - 3G coverage
H - HSDPA, 3G turns to HSDPA on some networks while downloading data then switches back to 3G a few seconds after data use.
If you are seeing a G on the top bar, it means the HD is in the slowest GPRS data rate mode.
Thanks for the clarification, guys; I thought so. Oh well, no need for wishful thinking, then. 2G or not 2G...blah, curse you Hamlet!

max speed technically...(at least in Germany)
GSM:
G --> 56kps (0,05MBit/s)
E --> 256kps (0,25Mbit/s)
UMTS:
3G --> 384kps (0,38Mbit/s)
HSDPA --> 3,6; 7,2; 14.4 Mbit!!! (depending on operator) --> sometimes called 3.5G
LTE (long term evolution) --> 4G (Generation)
coming in 2010 from 25Mbit onwards
using opera, just for surfing, i think EDGE is enough. (without using flash in opera)
regards
irm
p.s. @galaxys: the old analog network is to be considered as the 1st generation; GSM (incl. EDGE) is the 2nd generation. EDGE is some sort of speed upgrade like HSDPA for UMTS.

Your saying that it said 3G on the top of your screen not just G? If so can you post what rom/radio you are using?
You can find this in settings/system/device information

Is this on the top bar or is it the popup network setting bubble? Take a pic for us...
There is a setting, probably hidden and changable via Advance Config and/or HD Tweak where if a network has 3G capability then it shows "<network> - 3G" (I disabled it via one of them)
This is regardless of whether your phone itself can handle the 3G network, which in the case of Touch HD it cannot as the device does not support the frequency of US 3G bands
Mine shows "O2 UK - 3G" for this reason regardless of whether it says G, E, 3G or H at the top of the screen.
Additionally, the "generation" things are as follows:
- - GSM - 1G
G - GPRS - 2G
E - EDGE - 2.5G
3G - UMTS - 3G (surprise surprise)
H - HSDPA - 3.5G

Is it true? T-Mobile 3g on Xperia?

Ok so I did some reading and the past and I had confirmed that there wasn't 3G bands that supported T-Mobiles 3G on the phone so I had always disabled the 3G. Well recently I got a TM506 and started tethering that to my phone/laptop while on vacation and ran some speed tests getting around 7000kbps | 7.57Mbps | 968.75KB/sec (tested on www.mobilespeedtest.com). Today I was playing with my Xperia again, flashing new roms and deciding to keep it, was frusterated that wifi was slow. Just opened up a browser and noticed it loaded rather quickly... Ran a speed test and it was roughly 7000kbps | 7.57Mbps | 968.75KB/sec which is similar to what I had on my TM506 which is offically a T-Mobile 3G phone.
Can I come to the conclusion I am gettnig 3G on the phone? It seems like it. I ran multiple speedtests and the same speeds are being produced. Can anyone shed some light and help me be able to confirm this fully?
It's pretty obvious if you have a 3G connection, as a little "3G" box appears in the top menu bar (same place there is a "E" box for an EDGE connection).
So your saying if I don't get the "3G" on top but speed tests show differently then it can't be 3G? Doesn't seem to be very accurate to me....
if your using an X1a, then yes you most likely are hooked up to tmobile's 3G..about the 3G icon not showing up..if its a custom rom..i kno in some of this roms the 3G icon is sometimes disabled so you might wanna check in advanced config to see if its enabled or not..
I am on a X1i, with Jacks 3.0 Medium Rom. Just flashed .10 radio as well. 3G is enabled as well. Hope this stays as it might become useful for others that are on T-Mobile as they might be able to get 3G now.
I get very optmistic results from mobilespeedtest.com, try a few other testing sites or even better a large download for real world speeds. If you are getting more than 380 kbit/sec you must have HSDPA and should have the H icon (unless it has been disabled)
Where are you located?
North Dallas, tx. Near frisco. I tested in Denton, Lewisville, The Colony and Frisco. All supposedly 3G speeds.
Neither the X1i or X1a runs on TMO's 3G network as TMO requires two bands for 3G to work.
Are you sure you're not just connected to wifi?
ya. wifi is turned off. And I ran a check with wifi, it gave me roughly 3mb down but with without its 7mb down... could just be the site isn't reliable... i waitng to tether to my laptop to check speedtest.org
If you're using the epc.tmobile.com APN, it's likely the speed test is being accelerated by the gateway, especially if the results are calculated by the website and not the phone.
yeah.. I finally got wifirouter and set it up with my laptop and went to speedtest.net which to me is more accurate and i was only getting ~200kb down. Better than what I had before so I'm actually happier now. Just wished it was the real 3G. :| of well.

Has anyones network dropped below 3G...ever???

I've had my evo for a little over three weeks now... I've traveled to alot of different areas and I've never seemed to drop below 3G even when I have zero bars....Is anyone else experiencing this???
Sent from my Evo 4G using XDA App
I live in iowa, sprint roams a fair amount of the time. I don't think the evo will display anything other than 3g when internet is available even though it is roaming on like a 1x network. I think sprint roams 1x on UScell, but I've gotten good 3g speeds roaming as well, which I assume is Verizon. Running a speedtest has confirmed max rates of ~200kbs even though I had full bars. I've never gotten less than 800 when not roaming. Is there a program out there that will specifically tell who's tower you are roaming on? Thanks!
I have never seen anything other than 3G, 4G, or nothing for the data connection. It's the way the phone was designed. If I have a data connection, it always says 3G (I rarely connect to 4G).
I've seen a screenshot with EvDo listed in the status bar, but I've never seen anything but 3G on my phone.
The screenshot with EvDo was a custom ROM, so it may have been something they changed. I'll see if I can find the screenshot again. (It was here on xda.)
yes, i've seen a triangle, 1x or evdo symbol and sometimes and x for no service at all lol. i tend to miss the coverage i had under at&t...
EVDO = 3G
1x = Not 3G
Triangle = Roaming
3G is almost always displayed on the stock rom even when its not in 3G
On custom roms you will see different combinations
I get the triangle when riding underground in Chicago's subway.
The Evo is screwed up in signal display. It always shows 3G even if you're on 1xRTT.
I'm working on a widget that'll show it.

3g useless, only hspa works

When browsing or tethering, unless the connection switches to H it is basically useless - won't even load google.com. I am aware of the speed differences between 3g and HSPA but is this normal?
I'm running CM7 nightly.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Yes.
It's not useless, it's just slow - and having HSPA, your basis for comparison is subjective and flawed. Measurement with SpeedTest would tell you the exact differences in numbers - but in user experience, the difference seems way more than the numbers show.
Moreover, when your phone attempts to connect, if the mobile network stays on 3G - it can mean that it has no reliable connection.
for me 3G=HSPA
it says 3G until im pulling data and then it switches to HSPA, ive never pulled data while on 3G

3G is UMTS. HSPA is like 3.5G. They didn't call it 4G because it was more of an additional way to provide a slightly better 3G.

[Q] how to get 3G connection?

hi freaks.
used the freaking serach option, but didn´t find anything on this.
a friend of mine from the states gifted me his mytouch 4g. i´ve got it running nicely on wifi, but don´t get any 3g connection.
is this problem known?
i´m on th eplus network here in germany, my apn settings are correct. when i am at a spot, where i get 3g with my old samsung,
and put the sim in the glacier, i only get it showing H. G in bad locations, but never more then H.
is this problem known? here in germany, we don´t have 4g yet, so i would be really glad, to get 3G working.
any tips for a noob?
also, sidenote: when i´m on H, and viewing a website, it gives me a "stripped" look without pictures etc. is this some kind of "downsizing" and known problem?
When you get that "H", think of it as "3.5G" ...it's faster than the 3G network, but slower then 4G. It means your on T-Mo's HSPA+ network.
You can also "force" 3G... download "Any Cut" from the market, open it and make a shortcut using Activity. Select Phone Info, then select "WCDMA Only". If you don't want to download it, use the dialer and put in "*#*#3646#*#*" (I think that's it...) and it will do the same thing.
Your MT4G works fine. "H" is HSDPA or HSPA+, which is as said "3.5G" and is exactly what this phone supports.
It doesn't show you "4G" (which is only a marketing gimmick by itself - HSPA+ isn't a true 4G anyway), because it has no way to separate HSDPA and HSPA+.
great. thanks for the quick anwser.
i found a list for the speedsymbols, might be of interest for other noobs.
H = HSDPA je nach Netzbetreiber und Standort max. 1,8 oder 3,6 oder 7,2 Mbit/s
3G = UMTS max. 384 kbit/s
E = EDGE max. 220 kbit/s
G = GPRS max. 56 kbit/s
i was already asuming the glacier can´t handle 3G, only 4G..
the thing is, on my samsung galaxy it shows 3G and same sim in glacier shows H, wich ment, that the glacier had "stronger" signal. might bee. does the glacier have no 3G symbol at all?
why i was wondering, does anyone recognize this "downsized" internetbrowsing? i´m using dolphin browser, and evrything looks like an early tex only wepage.
unfortunately, i´m right now in a rural area, where i don´t have H or 3G, but will do speedtests tomorrow on both phones to compare.
under settings-wirelesss n networks - mobile networks.
i got that "wmcda" or gsm or both (auto) also, was already wondering, what that might be, so i´m gonna try that also 2moro.
-edit: found the fix for "downsized" browsing, google was forcing me to mobile view of wikipedia etc. never had that on my other phone..
Glacier has 3G symbol, but if you have the "mobile network constantly connected" option set to "On" and your cellular carrier supports it - it can stay on "H" constantly. Many stock ROMs don't show "H" at all, and only show "3G", to avoid just the type of reaction that started this thread So check if the Galaxy (S?) shows "H" at all, it probably doesn't.
Dolphin might have the option to show Mobile view and an option to skip downloading pics. Check that both options, if exist, are "Off".
i assume, u mean "enable always-on mobile data" it was checked, will test it unchecked 2moro and then see, if it shows 3G, as i neverever saw it...
i still got the customrom, but already lurking around the different custom ones threads
if i don´t get t-mobile tv running (just started a new thread for that), i see no need for tmobile rom...
yes, my galaxy (3) shows H, but mostly (only as i know now) 3G in the citycenters, and the mt4g in the same location shows H... really got to speedtest that stuff...
found-the dolphin fix already, as posted, google and wikipedia forced me to mobile view.. now, a day later, (and sober), i see the switch to normal view link all the way down

Roms contain the 3G, H, 4G, evdo/cdma, 2g, edge, icons....But you'll only see 3G when connected to UMTS, and H shows for HSPA+. Depending on signal strength you'll see a different icon in status bar. The major US carriers that use GSM consider HSPA+ 4G, this is false but they've made it as a fact....
"The ITU announced in December 2010 that WiMax, LTE, and HSPA+ are 4G technologies."
in germany we call that "Mogelpackung"
edit. just updated to gingerbread, and now got a 2G logo, where before there was only the G ????
never saw or heard of that in germany, as quoted above, we have only 4 speeds..
this is getting more excited. perhaps tomorrow i might even see 3G

2G=Edge, I'm sure Germany has Edge data now, and G=GPRS or 1G.
obviously this phone isn't made for germany.. after the gingerbread update, it eather shows 2G or 4G, where we even't have 4G in germany.. speedtest shows 1294kb thats not much, but more then I expected... thx god. I know now, that 3g is working, wether it shows it or not..

If the company has HSPA+ in the US, does it not have it in europe?
How international roaming works, and why your device matters
Four frequencies (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) are used for wireless services worldwide. 3G frequencies include: 2100 3G; 1700/2100 3G.
Each phone has a radio transmitter-receiver that works on one frequency (single-band) or on more than one frequency (multi-band).
Since frequencies vary from carrier to carrier and country to country, you’ll need a device for international roaming that works on the frequency where you're traveling. If you have a “quad-band” device, it will work virtually anywhere there’s a wireless signal.
nope, no hpspa+ in germany, and I don`t think it`ll come.
they are just in the beginning of setting up LTE here.
