No sound on speaker, headones ok though. - HD2 General

Hi guys using a custom rom - kumars leo 2.2 wwe 1/29/10. Seemed to be going fine, but ive noticed (im sure it was working before) that the sound doesn't work. No ringtones, message alerts or alarm sounds, sat nav. Nothing plays in the media player or warning sounds. If i plug the headphones in it works perfectly - everything. The speaker phone works too, but i think that comes out of a different speaker to the main one.
I just flashed to 2.06.50.23_3 Radio to see if that would help but no go. Anyway to test why its not working?
Thanks.

I had a virtually identical problem at one point in the past. In my case the solution involved one very important thing. Perhaps it will work for you.
Sometimes, if you use "clean-up" software, the program may delete a particular folder that's vital to sounds being enabled. You wouldn't think so, but this folder MUST exist. It's called the Volatile folder. It can be empty, but it must exist (don't ask me why).
It should be located in the Device/Application Data folder. If it's not there, create it. As I said earlier, it can be empty. It doesn't matter. Just make sure you have a folder called Volatile inside that Application Data folder.
Yes, there's another Application Data folder on the Storage Card. Not there! You must put the Volatile folder in Device memory.
Good luck!
Peter
P.S. I'm using a stock HTC ROM, so I don't know if this solution will work for you.
P.P.S. Don't forget to soft reset after creating the Volatile folder.

Hi PeterHTC, thanks for your reply. I do have that folder in aplication data. I removed hspl and put the original o2 rom back on, still same problem - all fine with headphones.
So i gave up and took it back to the shop. They are sending it off, should take about 10 working days, so ill report back.
Cheers.

I know my speaker went out about 13 days after purchase. I thought the same thing, that it was something that got wiped playing with a rom. But with one exception I gave the phone a good tap while it was playing a sound clip and I could get the speaker to function for short times. Then it just finally gave up the ghost. I figured bad wiring. I never dropped it or did anything to come close to harming it.
I'm got a replacement sent out(works great so far) and I still have to send back the other one. Starting to wonder if the first few batches were hastily made and now the costumer is paying for it with phones that keep failing in odd ways. It's to be expected till they have all the bugs out. You can do all the testing you want but till something hits the public you'll never find them all.

Sound plays faster at times

From time to time I have a problem where all my audio plays at 2x speed (or something faster than normal.) It starts happening with no "apparent" cause. It applies to all sounds, so my ringtones will go faster, the voice command voice is faster, and MP3's as well. It happens without any over clocking, or with over clocking for that matter.
It goes away after a soft reset but is still quit annoying. Anyone else have this issue, or better yet, a fix for this issue?
Thanx; Lew
thats happend to me once or twice, however..i dont soft reset...i just stop all running programs and its fine
Thanx for the reply. That don't seam to fix it for me. hmmm...
Same problem Here?????
I have the same problem when playing files off the storage card. So far, only thing that fixes it is a soft reset. Closing all open app's didn't do it for me.
I'm noticing the same problem as well, although I wouldn't say it plays TWICE as fast. To my musician's ear, it's more in the range of a whole step, which is common when 44.1KHz files are played back at 48KHz. Maybe there's a connection? I'd love to find out what's causing this.
As with others, the only thing for me that cures it is a soft reset. This is annoying, because it screws up the pitches of DTMF.
- Justin
Same here. You'd think that with such a high tech device and for the price, you'd get a device that at least played music correctly.
Is that too much to ask? I was going to ditch my iPod video and Nano and use my 8125 as my mp3 player but not with this annoying glitch.
You'd even expect the default ringtone to ring at the correct speed!
But NOOOO!
A.
mine did this to only thinkg i did was applied some tweaks using tweaks2k
not sure if that was what did it or not
Check to see if your ringtones are on the miniSD verses the phone in the rings directory. It did that on mine and then I erased the ring out of the SD card and put it in the windows/rings directory and then it didn't do that anymore. Try and see. It fixed it for me.
Mine are in those folders and it still does it. I have done registry tweaks and it does it. My friend has done nothing except install Agile 5.0 and his does it too, it has to be caused by using your own homemade ringtones.
Nope. I use a stock ring tone (Old Phone) and it still does it.
In a word I can tell you what causes this: BUG.
I figured out how to make mine play the sounds at normal speed. I just connect the stereo headset and disconnect.
Let me know if it works for you guys.
try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=46000&highlight=sound+fix
Has anybody tried the solution in the link provided by Nice Pants? I am hesitant to make a registry tweak that nobody seems to know too much about.
- J
I tried this registry fix and it didn't work. I believe the registry fix is used when your audio isn't working at all, not for this speed issue. I'm experiencing this speed issue as well. It's pretty annoying. Connecting and disconnecting the stereo headset solves the problem, but only temporarily.
You're right, I edited the registry using my directions, and after a soft reset my sound speed was back to normal, I came to realize after the same problem occured again, that it was actually the soft reset that was fixing it. I've only had this happen twice, and unfortunately I haven't been paying attention to what I was doing before it happened.
I currently have the summiter custom 2.17 ROM installed and I never had this problem with the stock cingular ROM. So... it's annoying, but I don't know if I have the patience to look through the registry for the fix, when this will probably be fixed by the "official" cingular ROM whenever it's released.
This is just another one of those issues that we as early adopters will probably have to live with (like the stupid battery icon, and no vibrate on push email).
I'll keep looking though, and if I eventually come up with a fix I will definitely post it here.
I am having this problem as well and posted a comment on Cingular's forum. This problem happened often on the stock ROM, but then seemed to go away when I upgraded to the 2.17 ROM. However, it has returned! It seems to happen randomly every day or two.
Initially (when I was using the stock ROM), I called Cingular's tech support and they forwarded me to HTC's tech support. The HTC guy was sort of rude and initially accused me of overclocking, which I hadn't done! He told me to soft-reset the device, which of course worked, then that was that. Incidently, I have tried overclocking since then and it does not affect audio playback speed. How about them apples? I am not overclocking anymore. I only did it as an experiment.
Also, this is my second device (I traded the first one in because of this issue). And based on the number of people that run into this, I believe the problem is fairly wide-spread, just most people don't pay as much attention to the audio as we do or perhaps reset their devices more often.
I wonder if a workaround can be created to exploit the solution of plugging and unplugging the headphones? Could somebody write an app that emulates the headphones being plugged in and unplugged? Or can somebody trap whatever messages the OS is sending around during that process and figure out which one "resets" the audio speed?
This is strange. I'm half wondering if it's a design flaw...
I hope this thread stays alive and somebody comes up with something. It is frustrating, despite being a "small" issue...
Personally I always have my headset in my pocket and just connect and disconnect, but I'd love to see this problem fixed. I have noticed on my device that the sound speeds up when EDGE disconnects and reconnects because I loose signal while using Agile. Does anyone have this problem and is not using Agile Messenger??
I don't even subscribe to EDGE services, I just use mine for the phone, text messaging, and wifi. And I notice that it started doing it about a week ago, in which i did a HARD reset. It of course went away, and i was thinking it might be some of the Tmobile addons in the extrom. but it seems that cingular is having same issue. I havent even bothered to call t-mobile because all im going to get is a rep who doesnt know anything. its not like they can write rom patches. I notice it came back the other day and i soft reset and it goes away. I want to let you know i've had this issue with a computer before. Someone a long time ago wrote an AC 97 sound driver for BeOS that i used on an old emachines. There was a bug in the driver that made audio play back 10% faster. It was completely software related so maybe someone in the board here who knows about the registry and drivers for this device could find a way to patch the bug.

problems with new o2 rom

Hi,
just downloaded and installed o2 rom version 2.21.4.1 on my mini s. Everything works fine on but the "pictures & videos" program. It just wont start, not even when trying to start the program thru the camara. So at the moment i cannot view any photo's i've taken! Is there any way to fix this. I've re-flashed with the new rom a couple of times and still no good. Can i re-flash back to the original o2 rom? If not is there any software that lets me view my pics?
cheers
Did you download the ROM again or just re-try the ROM you had? I would try a new download.
hi,
what try to download from o2 agian or from another source? IOf so where else can i download from?
cheers
just downloaded from xda ftp site and it's still no good. The pictures and video program still aint working. Tried to get the original rom back on but it aint happening.
any ideas
Hi,
still no good cant work out whats gone on but i cannot view any pics taken. Is there any software out there that does the same thing as the pic & video prog?
cheers
Strange, I just checked, it's workin' OK on my miniS.
I don't use it anyway - for photos try

or for vids
http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about
of course
cheers for that mate. yeah it's really strange, doing me head in. I've downloaded and re-installed now 3 times but still no good. Contacted o2 so hopefully there can share some light on it.
cheers
p.s
is there any way to put the old rom back on?
Pretty disillusioned with the new ROM.
Reception has improved, and it seems a little quicker than before, but I now have a recurring problem.
Basically if I leave my XDA Mini S connected to the PC (home or work, makes no difference), to allow activesync to keep it up to date, eventually the thing hangs (hung overnight last night and missed my alarm). Problem is of course that it looks like its working fine (normal screen display), but it has frozen and is unresponsive to key presses and screen taps. Other problem is that when you call it in this state it rings (on the caller side) but there is obviously no alert from the phone itself. Furthermore it receives texts which then just "disappear" (I assume so as test messages sent while its frozen never arrive once its switched on). Any ideas anyone?
I thought it might have been cLaunch, but it happened last night with cLaunch uninstalled. It also happens with PocketBreeze off (no today plugins active at all). Maybe it's "Batti" but I hope not as the functional alternative is PocketPlus which as far as I am concerned is bloatware.
cant say mines ever done that. another problem i spotted is cant access any networkd thru wi-fi??? Rang o2 and there said it could be a 3rd party software problem, but the thing is i aint even got round to installing any yet. in the end they've put it down to a camera fault. Sent it back under warrenty this afternoon so a new one should come by friday. O2 are unsure what rom version will be shiped with it thoso will just have to wait and see.
cheers

Phone won't properly switch from vibrate to sound

at&t 8525 owner, here.
So, I've had this issue for a little while now after I flashed Shadow TE ROM. But it's continued since then... so here's the issue:
I go into work and turn the phone onto vibrate. After I leave work, I switch back to sound on (ring & vibrate). Even though the icon shows the sound is back on, it's not. It only vibrates. It acts as if the speaker is still asleep.
So for awhile I'd have to reset my phone every day to get it working again until I realized I can go into sound settings / notifications and I find that the phone's jumped back to the default ringtone and more than that, I have to literally push PLAY to test the sound in order for the speaker to "wake up" if you will. Then the phone's fine until the next day.
Ok so back to present:
I got fed up and thought it was Shadow TE. So I flashed CRC's v9.2 ROM. Still had the same speaker issue! I was advised to flash a shipped rom.... which I did.... and flashed CRC's v11. Issue still remains.
I've searched the board and could only find one other person make mention of this a couple years ago and no one ever addressed it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd appreciate it greatly.
Same problem here with a custom Titan ROM. Installed the same software as every other ROM that I've used so the problem must be in the ROM somewhere.

Could be... but why does no one else seem to have this issue? Wouldn't there be tons of people replying here?
I did find that instead of switching it to vibe when I arrive at work, I switch it to silent... and SOMETIMES when I go back to Sound it works ok for a few hours but then it goes back to silent without warning so I miss calls and texts a lot. Might as well force the sound back on through Notifications Menu anyway. I'm SO getting away from Windows Mobile ASAP.
As soon as the Blackberry Bold is released here in the US, I'm buying it.... unless something about it disappoints me, in which case I'll settle for the iPhone 3G. The Bold can't come soon enough.
Who would like to claim this Hermes when I'm through with it? What are you willing to pay?
Try making sure that your ringers are in the windows\rings folder. Saw it somewhere else and it seems to be working.

Sound Problems

I am running the stock ROM from Sprint (WM 6.1). To my knowledge I do not have anything really wacky installed...and have not installed any new programs...but the following problem has developed...
Periodically my sound will jsut stop working. If I turn the phone off and back on, the sound seems to come back (by phone I mean the screen using the power button on a short press -- not actually causing the phone to power off). Sometimes that works and sometimes if doesn;t the first time...
Sometimes the sound will simply come back on it's own.
I have not done a hard reset yet, becuase I do not want to spend another three hours rebuilding my phone....
Any ideas?
Try installing a new radio. Some radios don't work well with ROMs, therefore giving intermittent sound.
(Also, for the sake of making a hard reset easier, use Sashimi to preload your cabs )
First, as a side note, if you spend 3 hours rebuilding your phone, sounds like you don't backup, I highly suggest doing that.
Anyways, there could be a number of reason why the sound is out. Since you say you hve installed nothing, I would guess a hardware issue. I would go pickup a new device.

I have backups....I back up several times a week...but since I do not know what is causing my problem...will restoring the backup help...
I did not say I did not install anything ... I said I did not think I installed anything wacky...and have not installed any new programs for a while...
Hopefully by restoring, it will work properly, then you can narrow down the problem.

A Must-Crash-Steps for HD2

This may be an interesting symptom... It came of my in-car radioset's broken. I have to listen to traffic news while driving using my HD2's FMRadio. I found exactly everytime after I got off my car, the very first incoming call or dialing call will result in no sound from the phone following by a crash of the system, and I have to soft-reset to get it back to work.
After several weeks of testing I think I have found this Must-Crash-Steps for HD2. The key point is that everytime before I got off my car, I pull out the earphone without manually exiting the FMRadio.
Firstly, I made these tests all under the latest official ROMs, which include:
RUU_Leo_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.66.707.1_Radio_Signed_15.30.50.07U_2.06.51.07_Ship.exe
RUU_Leo_hTC_Asia_TW_1.66.709.3_Radio_CRC_Signed_15.32.50.07U_2.07.51.22_2_Ship.exe
RUU_Leo_HKCSL_CHT_1.72.832.1_Radio_CRC_Signed_15.32.50.07U_2.07.51.22_2_Ship.exe
and, all tests were made right after a Hard-Reset, no default settings were changed and no 3rd-party apps were installed.
Here comes the Must-Crash-Steps: (in number order)
1, plug in the earphone, run FMRadio, when there's a radio-station broadcasting, switch the sound to device loudspeaker by pressing the "device-soundwave" icon on the screen.
2, leave the device alone until screen turn off automatically (yes, screen off, not just dim out. So far, the radio broadcast still can be heard from device loudspeaker), then, without pressing any button or touching the screen, pull the earphone out, the radio broadcast will shut off immediately.
3, as before, leave the device alone for about 1 minute, don't do anything, just wait.
4, now the Judgement-Time comes, pick up your phone, turn on the screen, unlock, make a call to anybody (toll-free number is recommended, when line connection establish, no sound can be heard. By now, the phone screen seems hangs, even if you press End Call, the calling icon on the top-bar is still on.
(notice: you can replace this 4th step by calling your HD2 from another phone)
5, Press the Home button, you may be able to toggle to Manila home page, but at this time, (1)you can't go back to Phone page (2)after some operations on Manilla screen (play music, for example), the whole system halts: no response neither touching the screen nor pressing the buttons.
Anybody interested can give it a test and please post your test result here along with what ROM you're using.
Finally, forgive my half-cooked English......
Very insteresting.
A lot of people has said that FM Radio was related to some freezes and slowliness of the HD2.
Maybe thos guys from HTC that wander around here from time to time can see your thread and do something about it.
You should email HTC support detailing the steps you have taken and ask them to officially investigate it...
Your English seems pretty good to me. I haven't tested this anomaly, but it doesn't surprise me. I've tried several "official" and cooked roms and all have their limitation/crashes, but this seems particularly strange.
Yes, I already did that and got below useless reply:

Ok, tried to make a phone call and indeed you cant hear anything, but it never froze.
I've been having trouble with the no ring in incoming call.
And I do pull out my headphones without closing FMRadio.
So is this the problem , how can I fix it ?
I did try it when I saw one similar post on a Chinese website. Luckily my mobile didn't freeze as expected. But HD2 does often crash, freeze unexpectedly. For me especially it freezes quite possible on two occasions: one is when you start you opera browser, the other is when you pick up to answer a coming call. But so far I haven't figured out what the root causes are. It is really annoying.

No frozen? How about pressing the Home button followed by pressing the Dial button, could you re-enter the Phone screen? Or, slide to Music Tab, try playing a song, see whether the screen freeze...

In my case, you can still have the phone ring when there is an incoming call, but right after you pick up the phone and slide to "Answer", silent at all.
Since it is under an official rom environment, the simple way to "fix it" is: everytime after you finish listening FMRadio, EXIT the app before you pull out the earphone )

Wow, China Mobile. LOL
on to something not so completely different... I do have some problems that seem to appear when you take out the jack before closing the relevant app.
I use mortplayer in the car, and if I close the app before getting out of the car, and AFTER that I take out the jack, everything goes fine.
If instead I first take out the jack, as soon as I unlock the device to close mortplayer, all I see is windows media player opened for some weird reason on the playlist dialogue. I need to close that and access mortplayer to close it.

the only tiny difference is, while call is made and no sound, press "End Call", the phone screen will close and go back to Manila Home automatically. (notice that under 1.66 and other ROM, I can't even End a Call)
This looks fine but the system actually goes nuts: first, you can't go back to phone screen again; secondly, you can't play music in Manila's Music tab; and finally, no response of the whole system.

Confirmed. I am not an exception. Following your must-crash technique, my mobile also died immediately. That it didn't happen in my previous test could be because I didn't follow your procedure right.
It is really interesting. Should let HTC know about this.
