Will MMS work through wifi? - HD2 General

My wife wants an HD2 but doesn't want the data plan since she sits at home all day and we have wifi so there wouldn't be a need for a $30 a month data plan, I've read MMS won't work with out a data plan and she sends a lot of picture messages to her girl friends. She currently has a blackberry and we have the unlimited family messaging plan which currently covers MMS also, will this be enough?

I don't know how it works in the USA, but here MMS doesn't use the internet data plan, it has it's own server, and they have a fee/message like sms. And I think it's not different out there too, the data plan possibly contains the "free" messages. Well thats what I think.

For some reason T-mobile over here in the US won't let Android phones use mms with out data plans so I was wondering if it would be the same for the HD2.

Well thats very restrictive, you should ask them about winmo mobiles, maybe on winmo you don't need data plan, i can't confirm it and apparently no one else can/wants to.

lol I don't know what T-mobile is thinking but if they expect me to pay $30 a month so my wife can use MMS on her phone on top of our unlimited messaging plan they are crazy. And they do force you to have the data plan if you upgrade with the $200 price but you don't HAVE to have the data plan if you pay the full price, I'll probably buy it at full price if she still wants it

you should introduce her to the idea of emailing pictures. its completely free over your wifi connection. that is assuming her friends phones can recieve emails with attachments...

Check your contract. We're all just guessing but personally I would have thought that if you've got an unlimited messaging option then that should mean that you can send an unlimited amount of SMS and MMS messages whatever type of phone you're using...

My thoughts exactly, but I hate reading contracts, does any one want to volunteer and read T-mo USA's grandfathered unlimited messaging for families for $9.99 contract?

cheap at&t data plan?

so i'm upgrading my wizard to an 8525. up til now i've managed to get by without a data plan and only text messages. i'm curious how to get cheap data plans on at&t. i called them and they said $29.95/mo JUST for data.
i've heard people getting unlimited data for like $6 a month using proxies or something? i've had no luck perusing google and forums for info on this so hoping somebody here has some answers. thanks!
The cheapest plan I know you can get for unlimited data is the mediaNet unlimited for 19.99 a month, and thats if you get someone thats nice enought to give you that plan since they aren't supposed to give that plan to people with PDAs
so do you know if the mediaNet unlimited for 19.99 a month with work with a hermes? i used to have that with my 8125, but when i bought the 8525 they changed it...if i change it back to the media net plan...will it work? without getting any strange overages on my bill?

Yeah it will work. I've used for the last several months! The only thing to remember is to ONLY connect through wap.cingular, NOT isp.cingular.
I've noticed no problems with mine! When you get the phone the sales rep always tells you that you have to have the pda plan to use the phone. It is against the rules to use the MediaMax plan but between my phone and my wifes phone spending an extra 100 bucks a month for data started to really suck the wallet dry.
Now we both use Media Max 200 +Unl m2m texts. 24.99 Text and data all you want!
There are some other threads out here about this, search media max and you'll find them.
Now your not supposed to do this but many of us get away with it. Just make sure after every rom flash that youve got your connections setting on wap.cingular and UN: [email protected] and Pw: Cingular1
Reps and Phone people will not let you get this plan, GO ONLINE to att.com/mobile and add it there!
tell the reps that you're switching to a razr or something and ask to be switched to a Media Max option which gives you unlimited data and either 200 messages (19.99) or 1500 messages (29.99). MUCH cheaper than getting a PDA data option.
If your unlocked and have the coverage in your area, I would check T-Mobile data rates. I saved a bunch not going with AT&T.

while that's true, you do miss out on using 3G. especially if the prices you get can be close to the same.
so wat u r sayin is that i will lose my 3g connectivity if i get the media max plan instead of the pda......right now i have the 39.99 plan with unlimited internet and messaging.....so do u guys think it will be worth it to switch to the media max??
from the sounds of it no, you can still use 3g. please connect me if i am wrong... anyone?

You're right. You won't lose 3G by going with the lower priced plan. The person who said that you'd lose 3G was comparing using T-Mobile's lower cost plans to AT&T plans.
Oh, sorry if I confused anyone. I meant you lose 3G if you go to T-Mobile for a lower priced data plan. You absolutely will not lose 3G by getting a Media Max plan. I have the Media Max 1500 plan and I was using the Hermes (now Kaiser) and love it.

screw someone that's nice enough.
Do all of your business with AT&T online if possible. Go to the site and select MediaMax from the list (unlimited internet and like 200 text messages I believe) or the upgraded version that's exactly the same except 1500 text messages (for $29.99 instead of $19.99 a month). Do it online and nobody can say no.
getting the cheaper unimited plan for my 8525
If I go online and order the cheaper 29 dollar plan (or was it 39) anway, can I connect my AT&T 8525 to my laptop (tether) and use it for internet service? The AT&T rep told me this cost $80! My AT&T phone is running factory ROM, mobile 5 (mobile 6 when ever it comes out)

There's some people who still are waiting for the "official" release from AT&T. I guess that it all depends on your comfort level and what you're willing to do to/for your Hermes.
i have a cingular 8125, with T-mobile service, and i pay 6 dollars a month, (i dont think i even have to pay that_ because the proxy settings are from MMS settings, hmm.... but yea its super fast, but for 6 bucks, i cant complain

Here's what I've heard ... you can tether on the $20 plan ... but do so at your own discretion since tethering isn't a part of the plan. There's a lot of discussion about this on hofo. So far no one has been charged that I know of.

How did you set up/ where is the $6 tmobile internet?
I just Called At&T and told them to add [Media Max 200 Bundle for $19.99] to my account. they told me that I have 8525 PDA phone. and I told them that I am going to change the phone to razr. Then they added it for me and I reset the phone after changing the setting to wap.cingular
Now it is working fine. with 3G Connection.

no. tmo closed the data loophole a loooooong time ago. you have to get an android data plan.
damn that sucks :\
em i able to use it with a prepaid voice and no text or data just use wifi
yea you can use wifi with the phone anytime.
you can get g1 data with flexpay also, but if you wanna use any data outside of wifi you need the android plan, theres no way out of it if your with Tmobile .

anyone know.if not are there any other way to resolve it?
i'm using it now and have since day 1 of the N1 release and for a year with the iphone before that
same here. thats the only reason i got the nexus. so far so good! and the nexus is freaking SWEET!
guys wait....what data plan you have? the 24.99 one or 5.99one??!
The lowest data plan on the t-mobile site I see is $10 for "unlimited web".

yes, now there isn't 5.99 anymore, right now it is 9.99
paullu is correct. If you've been with TMO since they had $5.99 tzones and still have it on your plan, you can have that. I think there's even a user of these forums that claims to still have $2.99 tzones. If neither of those apply to you, the cheapest you can now get it for is $10 by saying you have some non-smartphone but want the internet access for some strange reason and make them believe you.
I'm using the 5 dollar plan since the middle of january.
As others have said, the $5.99 TZones plan is only available if you have it grandfathered in on your plan. Using this plan is a classic "trick" for any unlocked smartphone device that you use on your line... works with unlocked iPhones and other devices.
Unfortunately, I am a sucker and have the standard $24.99 plan.
yeah i got my data plan a year ago or so, 5.99tzones. im one of the lucky ones who are now grandfathered so my internet is cheaper. but my minutes arent!
Beware I had the $5.99 plan for years but at some point it morphed into the $9.99 TmobileWeb plan. When I got the N1 it switched off several times. I noticed that setting my phone in the my.tmobile.com webpage to a dumbphone seemed to reset it to work again. That worked for January and February but it failed two weeks ago. I am guessing that Tmo somehow identifies smartphone users (especially the N1) and has gotten more aggressive about their data plans.

When I first got the Nexus One, I was on the iPhone 3G with the $9.99 plan. I poped in my sim card, and I had bypassed all the screens, logged onto my google account and the contacts were synced already. It showed the 3G logo and when I called up T-Mobile, they said the Android Internet plan isn't required but I still bumped it up to the Android plan anyways.

Not if you had tzones added on a non-smartphone before getting the HD2. I have the TZones internet as well that was added back when I had a Nokia phone
T-zone used to be $5 which used wap.voicestream.com in the past. I think the current T-zone is call Web2go and it's for $10; has restricted access to website. You can try using epc.tmobile.com, the new data access point. Please, tell me how it goes.
I Love the 10 dollar unlimited plan.
Ive been rocking this 10 plan on truly unlimited data for many, many months now.
All you had to do was sign up on my t mobile, select the shadow as your phone, go to edit your services, remove your internet, re-add unlimited web for phones 10 dollar option, wait 24-48 hours, manually enter APN internet2.voicestream.com
There you have it, will check to see if the option is still there, if you had it, you are GRANDFATHERED in FOREVER!! 4.5Mbps Download 1.4 Mpbs Upload on Unlimited 10 dollar plan, only works with the hd2 for the Hspa.
Plan not available anymore, 4G 200MB for $15 or an Unlimited 4G option for $30.
64.00 unlimited everything is very nice with this HD2 on Android, lol.
He's right it works..... But T-mobile doesn't give you that plan anymore... if you know someone with that t-zone phone buy him his phone and take over his plan.. lolol... it's best thing to do... Cuz all T-mobile internet APN works on 3G frequencies...
Cuz it's true that we don't need anything else these days... we can text, make phone calls and all that over the mobile data plans....(Google voice, SIP, Ect...) But companies Knows That..lol.. so now you can't buy a data plan by it self anywhere... Bastards trying to make money..lol...
Like me I have a sidekick data Plan Unlimited for 30 bucks (Unlimited 3g Data & Text) I have it in my HD2 with Android on it... with the sidekick APN (hiptop.t-mobile.com)
And the 3g and text works very good...
Those plans are not gonna come back..lolol...
So back to the original question on getting the mms with pics to work, has anyone got it to work?
Gigabyte01
I had the edge plan for $10 on my Iphone for awhile and it worked great. Tried to do it for my G1 and it would not work and then my iphone broke and I was without a phone so I had to give up the $10 unlimited data... I doubt I will be able to get it back ever. I had to fight with them to get the plan in the first place.

Unlimited Data For Anyone! (AT&T) [IPHONE 2G REQUIRED]

Hey guys just upgraded to Atrix liking it so far! Never had unlimited data before but couldn't justify having it without unlimited data so been researching the current loophole and just wanted to share what I found out.
1) You must have an iPhone 2G, and a sim card that has never been registered to an iPhone 2G before
2) Hard reset the iphone, put in your simcard, and register the iPhone 2G in iTunes. You will be asked to confirm you agree to $20/month unlimited 2g data + 200 text messages.
3) Check online account to see if plan went through, or call 611 and confirm.
4) Find a CSR that will change your Iphone 2g plan to unlimited smartphone personal. I tried over the phone multiple times and they kept on saying they couldn't do it since the unlimited plan didn't exist before June 2010. I was about to give up but went to a retail location and the guy did it on his computer.
5) Enjoy your unlimited data!
NOTE: Whatever you do DO NOT let them change your data plan off the iPhone data plan. If you lose that plan you need a new simcard and to start over. I think I may have had more difficulties cause I am on a business account, but it still worked!

what you are doing is making your phone an Iphone 2g.
making your phone an Iphone 2g gives you the unlimited 2g data (that comes with 200 texts as well) for $20.
Our in store systems allow us to go from unlimited 2g $20 to the unlimited 3g/4g data for $30 giving you unlimited data to your atrix/inspire/captivate if you didnt have it before.

Or you can "request" unlimited data with customer service on a new 2yr contract upgrade or new you have to do it through customer service and it might take a few calls Ive been able to add it without a problem on 4 lines last weekend. If you have 2g/3g data on the device you may experience service issues more awkward than normal by using this method in the OP I had a 3g unlimited on my main line and upgraded without change and pages barley loaded with full bars, this is not recommended to use the iphone data plan.
Will update with the feature code and name as soon as I can.
Would this work with an iPhone 3g? My friend has one lying around I could probably borrow to swing this. Also wondering about the ability to get unlimited texts.
edit: And I'll probably try the whole, calling customer service until I get what I want, plan soon.

No it won't work for a iPhone 3G. The reason this works for the original iPhone is that the only option for the phone is unlimited data. The 200 text messages has no affect on you if you have family messaging unlmited etc. Even if you have unlimited text you can always call back in to get it added back on.
So i tried to do the trick with an Iphone 2G, I checked online to verify and i think it went fine. Also online it gives me an option to change my Iphone Data plan to the Smartphone Bundles (1. SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 1500 Message for $39.99 2.SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 200 Messages for $35.00 3. Smartphone Personal Unlimited Data for $30)
Should i keep the Iphone Data plan or change it to the SmartPhone Personal plans?

So i tried to do the trick with an Iphone 2G, I checked online to verify and i think it went fine. Also online it gives me an option to change my Iphone Data plan to the Smartphone Bundles (1. SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 1500 Message for $39.99 2.SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 200 Messages for $35.00 3. Smartphone Personal Unlimited Data for $30)
Should i keep the Iphone Data plan or change it to the SmartPhone Personal plans?

Option 3 is a current unlimited smart phone data plan for the device, its thinking you had it and changed devices use this option so that way the data plan will work correctly for the device. You'll still have $30 unlimited data aswell.
If you are getting the option for smartphone personal unlimited that is the correct data plan for the atrix. iPhone plan doesn't support 4G as far as I know, if that ever happens.
This trick is more common for iPhone 4 users, where once they plug the sim back into the iPhone 4 the system automatically detects it is not a 2G device within a few hours and auto upgrades them to the $30/month iPhone data plan with a text messages alerting the customer. Chances are you will not be able to stay on the $20/month plan so I'd switch before AT&T realizes you are using a 2G iPhone data plan on an Atrix.
I should be good if i change it to the SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 1500Message for $39.99 right?
Yes, It's still a smartphone unlimited data plan!
it's giving me this error when i try to process it.
What should i do now? call customer service?

You are never limited to 200 texts even on the original $20 iphone plan. You can still add a text plan on top of it. It just uses your 200 and then starts using whatever else you have on plan.
But when you move to the $30 plan you lose the texts anyway.
