Hey all, Just updated my sig to show my current setup. Got myself a used MDA for free. Lil fix me up. Couple scratches, no stylus and so but was a 1.08 version =D So after reading up the guides here. I got to unlocking the cid and mda itself fine. Did the upgrade after I did the secure stuff to try out that XDA Mobile 6 R3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=324632
Im wondering which one is better tho... Kinda confused when it comes to that.. just know WM6 is the way to go and least I have the above installed and working. =D
So just learning all I can here. I saw something about Kitchen and I am guessing its like a custom build or so with things I want?
Anyways thought I would say hi and if someone knows a better WM6 I should go after. Ill look at it. Just so much to take in at once atm. Was used to playing with my Zodiac Palm. Heh.
All the chef's here are great, so the rom you want is truly dependant upon what you like. I run NTS's Jaguar 3.1...for me it is fast enough, really stable and comes with only a a small amount of stuff, so that I can customize it the way I like. Some roms have all the bells and whistles, some have pretty much OS only. As for a kitchen...before you attempt to cook your own rom, I would strongly urge you to READ READ READ all the tut's and stickies and wiki, learn as much as you can about your device first before doing any major customizing. Think of it like dating...you want to find out as much as you can about the other person, really get to know the other person and that person's quirks, before committing to a long-term relationship...or you can get sloppy drunk, jump in the sack and wake up the next morning going...what the hell did I just do!!! Your choice.
**edit**
BTW, Welcome to xda!!
Well here is my experiance. I mod and work with Symbian 60 phones as my primary. Write the guides on how to stream live TV or MP3 to the cell phone via winamp or real audio.
I have modded and flash/flexed Motorola phones, have experiance in unlocking Nokia and Motorola GSM phones. Not to mention tweaking.
So I am a sage when it comes to STUDY 1st. Its annoying.. but yea I do it.
(Oh yea, I also am with www.pspupdates.com so I mod PSPs too hehe)
So I studied enough here to least get my MDA sim/cid unlocked for modding. Thats safe. So far I went with that XDA Mobile 6 R3, I am not sure but it seemed stable enough to start with. I have not updated the IPL yet, but I prob will in a few, Rapid share sucks with its delay, no?
Well as for kitchen.. I figure its ALOT of data to take in at once. Abit too much... I understand its a make your own with what you want.. My issue isnt that.. my problem is.. WHAT do it I want??
I mean I have alot of experiance with my Zodiac II palm.. which is another for the homebrew community and tricks for working it... mean getting it to use my cell phone to connect was fun. (Still gotta with the PPC)
So my issue is trying to get to know the PPC OS. I played with it on my old bosses Ipaq 3135? (The T-Mobile PPC that failed)
But I did some interesting things with that too.
I know Ill 100% want VNC, Divx (Is there the web plugin for it yet to use stage6.com or so? What about Youtube REAL version?)
Not to mention easy to do emulators. =p
I just dont know fully what I want or what I SHOULD be after with this thing. I know I need to do some reg hacks to tweak.. but then im stummped.. if I am using custom mod versions... are these tweaks built in?? Would I mess something up? (You get my worries)
Another thing I noticed after I installed this version is VoIP... my wonder is.. I never used that before. I DO know I can flash my Linksys WRT54G with the DD-WRT voip firmware instead of the standard ddwrt build I am using now. Question is... is it worth it? If so, whats the deal? Use Skype?
As you can see alone from the questions above... Its just a scratch of questions and areas I am looking at and trying to get answers on... so yea.. kinda hard to know when to "stop" and say "IM HAPPY" with what I installed lol. Just need to know what I should go after... =/
Pick your favorite. If other, please post it.
I've just recently gotten into ROMs (about a month now) and the first one I loaded was Asergs. I have not tried any of the others but I do plan to at some point.
wow you put mine onto the list...
but i hope nobody will vote..
that was discussed many, many, many times before and you cannot know!
EVERY rom fits to one person!
if you like clean ones, or black ones, or biggy, or, or, or!!!
every rom ahs pro and cons!
test them for your own and don´t ask other to decide for you!!
That's exactly why I put the POLL up though. It's so common for everyone to just start asking whats the best ROM. And while I agree with you that they are all somewhat different and one may fit someone better than the next, alot of people would like to see what is making most people happy. Chances are if X amount of people are using one ROM and swear by it that they will like it as well. And maybe not, but it gives people a baseline of what the crowd is pleased with.
You may want to break up a little further. Each rom builder has many different taste of roms, like full, lite and micro etc. I used Touch IT 2.0 full, Open Touch V3 lite and now I'm on Open Touch V4 lite black, those are all great roms, and I'm sure just within open touch people would have a preference for different flavors.

ok go on with the masses.....!!!
only because most people like a rom it must not be good... hehe.
but if you look deeper into the world of Herlad/wing you will see the difference
good luck
I noticed that most people have ONLY tried OpenTouch and TouchIT ROMs. OpenTouch is leading the favorite by quite a bit.
I guess it's time for Just2Stuffed...

ROM or not to ROM
For me, and many users, the interest in ROM change was to increase available RAM via Pagepool modification. Now that can be accomplished without changing factory ROM, should this not be a choice? It seems the safest route.

Even with a great pagepool, it takes quite a few tweaks to get the RAM in a stock ROM to the level that a custom ROM would get. Even then, there are so many files in the windows folder that it causes a considerable slow down to the machine. This SHOULD be a choice, but I don't think it's the best. Depending on your device, though, it MIGHT be the safest route. (Actually, depending on your SPL.)
How much free RAM do you get on the stock ROM?
Hi guys
Hoping someone would be kind enough to take the time out to answer some questions I have regarding my HD2 on T-Mobile UK and how I go about modifying it etc
Please bare with me....this is the first smartphone ive ever had and am totally new to all of this! :S
1) Does the fact that its locked to T-Mobile (and has some form of their own software on it) mean I am unable to make use of the many updates or software tweaks that appear on this site?
2) I see people talking about Manilla...is this the software HTC place on top on WM6.5?
3) I see a lot of people talking about flashing their ROMs....what does this actually mean? Is it possible for me to get rid of all T-mobile crap on my phone and be able to apply updates, fixes etc whenever I want?
4) I know of some people who have Jailbreak their iPhone allowing them to run loadsa different software on it etc....is something similar possible on the HD2?
5) Basically it all comes down to the fact that I dont like the basic taskbar look on my phone (really want a colourfull taskbar and some form of % battery indicator) and want to make it look a bit more modern/exciting....and Ive seen loadsa uploads on this site about other users homescreens etc and want to know how i go about doing that? Im not sure if having a T-Mobile HD2 will stop me from modifying it in that way?
Would really appreciate any help/advice anyone is willing to give.....the site seems very oriented to people who know what they're doing lol and im struggling to find a section for novice users like myself! I really like that idea of having a phone I can customise whenever I like.....just not sure at all of how to start going about it......
Cheers!!!

The fact that it's locked to T-Mobile doesn't affect the majority of software on here. Sometimes, there'll be discrepancies between what's expected on your phone, and what's actually on your phone. This will be rare, and usually resolved on here anyway.

Yes - Manila is the Sense UI.

Flashing the ROM changes the core of the phone. It's often done to do exactly what you said - to get rid of the software that's there by default, but you don't want it. Another more common reason for ROM flashing, is ROM updates that include software fixes (as just happened with 1.48), or windows updates.
4) I know of some people who have Jailbreak their iPhone allowing them to run loadsa different software on it etc....is something similar possible on the HD2?

You don't need to "jailbreak" windows mobile. Question 3 covers this really.

Having a T-Mobile phone won't stop you changing that at all. Just get used to these forums and searching them and you'll find most things you need. There's certainly taskbars on here. You're better off looking in either the root Leo forum (one step above this forum), or the themes and apps one. Also, the Sense UI has a lot of mods in other forums. The Blackstone, for example, had the Sense UI available in a ROM way before the HD2 was released, so that's also a good source of information.
Just keep reading and you'll be fine. We were all new here once
Have fun!
Thanks very much!! appreciate it!

just wondering why I wouldnt want to apply ROM updates and windows updates? would it not be better to do this than wait for official updates from T-Mobile that will prob take forever to emerge?
I've seen on some forums that there is already an official (yet not appearing on the HTC site) HD2 ROM upgrade....but are you saying you advise against this? Or are u saying I dont want to change the core of the phone....but applying updates etc is still possible?
Sorry, excuse my ignorance!
Cheers
I don't understand why you think I'm advising against ROM updates, but I'm not
Basically, it's up to you to weigh up whether or not you want to do a ROM update by looking at what's new and what's removed (if anything).
As far as waiting for T-Mobile to release their own version of the ROM.... yeah, you're right. I wouldn't bother.
I've just updated my HD2 with the 1.48 release, and it's a LOT faster. It's still new though, and a couple of issues have already been found. It's always "at your own risk" whenever you flash the ROM or install mods.
can i ask you what come in the box with tmobile handset, carry pouch? micro sd? an such. and did you get it from tmobile themselves or a phone outlet like carphonewarehouse, thanks in advance

hi....sure! no probs...
i got the handset (obviously lol) charger and micro usb lead (which is quite short and frustrating actually) also got a 2gb micro sd card! There was no pouch - although as far as I am aware HTC supply a pouch...which t-mobile (and all other networks as far as im aware) remove....to force u to buy one! So i bought the official HTC leather one online for £10 - which is quite nice!
I just walked into a t-mobile store in glasgow and asked for the phone...and they had it! i had been arguing all week on the phone with t-mobile upgrades and retentions.....they wanted to charge me £380 upgrade charge as i have a 50% line reduction.......but when i walked into the store they done it for me for £50!!! and kept my discount!!!! so now i get 1000mins, unlimited txts and internet for £20 a month! if ur looking for the phone and dont get quoted a good deal keep shopping....there's always someone willing to do a good deal!
happy times all round!

Sorry - you're absolutely right. You can't upgrade with that ROM. The experts on here are working on something called "Hard SPL" which basically allows you to flash any old ROM you want, regardless of your ROM version at the time.
The ROM that's bouncing round at the moment is an official HTC one, and can only be used on phones that aren't locked to providers.
Since it's a new phone, I'd recommend getting used to it and the available mods on here. You don't need to be able to flash the ROM to install most of the mods, so you can still tweak your phone like mad!

I'll have a play around with some of the mods on the site and try get it looking much sweeter!lol

hi thanks for quick reply
am glad you get micro sd, they could of threw the pouch in too LOL, oh well suppose its not that expensive. (know what you mean bout charger cable, same with diamond2 lol) i`m with orange at the mo there not releasing the phone on there network at all i dont think, got my diamond2 from carphone warehouse 10 months ago. its been put in for repair 2 times already due to touch screen failure, last time i put it in it got sent to htc who declared the warrenty void because of certain applications on the phone and have demanded £70 to fix even though i pay insurance every month. decided am not paying gonna cancel direct debit as it was nothing to do with software why i put it in, in the 1st place, think its ridiculous! i`d flashed a cooked rom on my phone and unblocked it with hard spl, i reflashed original htc rom before putting it in the shop but forgot to reblock my phone again, thats what they mean by CERTAIN APPLICATIONS. so beware if flashing your device with non htc rom and you have to claim on insurance for anything, you have to reflash everything back to original htc factory software/roms. to be honest hard spl(unblocking programme to flash any rom) is not out there yet for hd2, i dont think. but just a little tip for you..
by the way lol, i cant seem to get my hands on a hd2 anywhere, there like rocking horse sh#t!! lol am getting really bored watching videos about the device on pocketnow.com now tho Grrrrrrrrrrrrr lol i NEED one soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
just had an email from tmobile, apparently its on its way!!!!!!!!! yaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Erm you can flash the newly "released" Official HTC WWE ROM using the goldcard method. I did so on my T-Mobile HD2. The benefit of doing so is to regain the applications T-Mobile removed like You-Tube, CoPilot trial and Jetcet print. Also you get the advantage of being able to flash future patches directly from HTC, instead of waiting for T-mobile to get their hands on them and break it.

Hey buddy, did you manage to flash your rom then?
Like you I'm very new to this scene (coming from an iphone) so just wanted to know if you had successfully flashed your rom. Which rom did you use because I can see a lot of different versions of this 1.48 and don't know which one to use.
Surely if you flash your rom and it shows the youtube app as well as copilot, tmobile will void your warranty wont they???

not sure regarding the warranty issue....id think so....tho if i had to send it in for repair (touch wood i wont) then id just restore it back to its original version 1st....

Okay guys, upon the receipt of my new HD2 and before I load anything on (contact and data wise).. what should I be doing first in terms of sensible updates and flashing to make it sing sweet.. I already have SPB Shell (3.5.3) from before on my Touch HD days.. but before I load that, what is a good practise to follow.. cheers.
Hard-SPL and flash a custom ROM.

Play with it as it is for a few days before you do anything. You'll know what you want by the end of that time.
yep playing will be fun but as I found when I had the touch HD, there were so many ROMs out there and everyone saying something for and against their version.
My needs are simple as beside the phone bits, contacts, emails and sms will be my thing so I want them all to work without any pains.. moving from WM 6.1 to 6.5 I am looking forward to as the old phone had to be rebooted daily to keep it from taking sick leave..

If it ain't broke don't fix it. As suggested, play with it then decide what you want to do, one mans meat is another mans poison, so you may not need to do anything.

Exactly,,, dont try to fix anything you dont know. Play, install apps have fun with it , and if you find any problems and issues den only install custom rom to ur needs. Till then have a nice time with ur HD2.
Plus, playing with it for a couple of days first will let you make sure you have a good one, and not one that needs returning.
I have been a user of Windows for long lomg time and have loved it when I had the liberty to flash clean cooked ROMS onto my device. Rarely, I stuck to Stock ROM's or over bloated ones no matter how stable!
Will we ever see the light of day when the streak will get to see some cooked ROM's which are not bloated with added apps?
I got my Streak bout a fortnight ago - so far tested and mostly fixed on downloaded apps - but really pissed as I still have crap on my streak which I do not use - why do we need to live with this?
Am now looking to dump the 2.1 - but sceptical as I nee many bricks flying around for units purchased online direct from Dell....
I really hope to see some cook - take the initiative and start cooking some clean workable ROM's
I am sure it will not be long before you have your wish, Paul over at Modaco is the main Cook at the moment nip over he has a custom ROM

I have no idea what you're talking about. What 'bloated' ROMs?
Why don't you just open the update.zip, remove all the crap you don't need, resign it, done. Or, just uninstall the apps you don't want? It's not exactly hard to do.
You also sound incredibly ungrateful, these devs put A LOT of hard work into these ROMs and you just complain about a few apps they've included? If you don't like it, why don't YOU start making ROMs. This thread is essentially just pure laziness on your part.
Wow. "why do we need to live with this?" It's not essential to life, It's a ROM. grow up.

Chill out Meltus.
Am not sitting here to start another debate on disrespecting Chef's - never had that intention anyway if you had read my post with a clear mind! - I have been a user of custom cooked ROM's since the days of XDA IIs and never had a reply of such.
My title read - 'Moved from windows' - which implied that I am new to Android and still experimenting - infact I am still on my stock ROM on my dell online purchased unit and was only lookign for a way to uninstall Touchdown etc to save on space in memory.
Thanks for the tip on changing update.zip - now I have a solution which I can look into!
I said we dont need to live with this and it was not pointed to any Chef - it was pointed to Dell - who have installed all crap on the unit (which I am trying to remove) and being in a forum - you will have to appreciate - we all have the right to ask questions - some may be good and some naive!
So mine was naive - and thanks for your answers.

'Go to HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P2\ EncodeFormat' to '2147483647' and you have loads of additional video recording formats!
You can also remove ROM apps by using Root Explorer (need rooted phone obviously) and removing the offending /apk files from /system/apps and then clearing the Dalvik-cache and rebooting.
I just flashed the 2.1 ROM on my AT&T/US Streak and got rid of Touchdown and Amazon MP3. No more icons I don't use, nor widgets to scroll through.
here's a good guide to it:

Good luck.
Be careful about removing ROM apps, ive done this a few times and then i got endless process error....eeeek :S

Good to know. I was wondering if it was so easy, why would everyone care about what apps are installed if you can just zap em if you don't want them. Well thankfully I developed no ill effects from my deletions, and I removed those I really didn't want.
I'm not enough of a linux/Android gear head to know better. I'm a pretty good Windows gear head, but never knew Linux well which is too bad with all the cool Androids coming along in the handheld space. Oh well, learning new tricks is good too i suppose...
thanks
