brick HTC hero purpose - Hero CDMA General

Yes. I'm looking for a way to mess up my phone software so I can use my insurance to get a new phone. Is there. An way?

I bricked mine once by flashing a gsm radio.. =(
but if that's what you want, then go ahead!
good luck, sprint isn't that smart. tell them you tried updating my prl and it shut off. that's what i did!

why dont you just say you lost it or throw it in the toilet?

this wouldn't get you a free phone, you'd have to pay a $100 deductible... you should be careful when making posts like this. Some people are really sensitive about cheating the system and will torch you. Having said that, I would flash a gsm radio like the second post said.

if ur paying for insurance then why don't u just brick it the easy way nd drop an actual brick on it... last i checked monthly insurance covered any cause for replacement even neglect

My first inclination is to flame you, because the day before my phone got stolen, Sprint raised their deductable from $50 to $100 because of people doing things like that. It sucked.
But with that said, if you still feel like being "that guy" just flash a gsm radio

i know, that's why i told him to do it your way rather than claiming loss or dropping it down the toilet

ummm...run the RUU then uplug the device as it is flashing? you ever hear of insurance fraud my man?

Why do you need a new phone? If there is a defect, such as dust under the screen or paint chipping, call up customer service. They'll send you another one. If you REALLY needed to brick it, I would flash a Nexus kernel and radio. If you flash BOTH, that's the point of no return.

You could use flash_image to overwrite the nand with 0xFF's. Or my personal favorite, nuke it for 2 seconds in the microwave. I happen to be one of few people who has heard what it sounds like to be connected to a phone being nuked. You hear a thud, a couple beeps, a loud buzzing and a click...
Granted that guy took me seriously. But in general you should always try to call customer service or take it to a sprint store and argue for a replacement. If you waste enough of their time they will do it for you without your needing to destroy hardware and raise prices for the rest of us.

Use fresh ruu 1.56 sprint stock and unplugged bfre it finishes...anyways u might get the error 110 like me....

Yea because flashing a gsm radio isnt cheating the system. An insurance claim you pay for which is what he said he didnt say under warranty.

Ok, Im sending my phone in for chipped paint guys... Now tell me..
I run a mac, and am on fresh 2.0d
Before sending it in should I brick it using the GSM radio thing so they dont know im rooted.
Because i don't know how to unroot on a mac.
EDIT: Also on my new phone, can i use my existing nandroid backups?

Just run the stock RUU it does it by itself. It gets rid of root and it also may brick your phone which you dont care. I do not know if it works on mac tho.

You are the reason people like me have to pay high premiums. Is anyone honest anymore? You guys who do this crap piss me off!

You have high premiums because you have a high cost device. The cost is 100 for high end devices if you had a regular phone it would still be 50.

So you ordered a phone, and initially thought it never came. Then you called and said, "Hey, where's that phone?" They said, "Sorry. We'll send another one."
Now you are basically saying, "Thanks AT&T for being so helpful and sending me a replacement phone. Now that you were so helpful, I will keep both phones and really give you the shaft for being honest."
Having two phones, you now wonder if you can get in trouble. Well, let me put it this way: if AT&T was to find out you have both phones, they might think you lied to them in an attempt to steal a phone from them. Most people and most businesses wouldn't respond too well to this.
The ethical thing to do is exactly what your question asks when reading between the lines: Should I keep what doesn't belong to me?
If you have to ask, you probably already know the answer.
Whatever...I worked for at&t for a year...nothing ethical about that company. I say keep it and be happy.
Answer is yes they could find out whos SIM is in the phone with that IMEI... Unless you use that program floating around and change the IMEI haha.

Strange, because you've offered to sell this phone to another member here already. You might want to get your story straight before Mark comes knocking on your door looking for his "kickback".
Isn't that like stealing more than half a thousand dollars?
I mean, Don't get me wrong, but you could let them know you moved, so they can send the phone to the right place.

You're probably right. But at the same time, is it worth the trouble and worry? Even if AT&T isn't ethical, does that mean you shouldn't? It's all about how you want to live your life.

Sprint Service Repair Centers

I need to take my phone in to a repair center. Should I reroot and go in stock? I know i already should pull my SD card, anything else? How much do they charge, i dont have insurance. Do they give you a replacement phone?
Just nervous, need some advice.
First off whats wrong with your device, and if you haven't had your hero over a year then your still in warranty and shouldn't charge you anything (and thats impossible cause the hero hasn't been out a year).
I would go back to stock rom, most service center repair specialists will flip out if you tell them hacked your phone. Just saying (I don't care personally)
Yes, before you go to the sprint store restore to factory OS. If you don't that will void your warranty

Most stores can't repair something like this. They will probably give you whats called an Advanced Exchange, meaning they'll order you a refurbished Hero, before you freak, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with a refurbished phone.
Secondly they will probably not give you a loaner while they look at/repair it. It would take probably 8 minutes to activate a loaner and then look at your phone, its way more simply to just go without a phone for an hour or less.
Lastly, they will more then likely not be able to swap you same day, meaning the refurbished phone will need to be sent to the store, and you would pick it up tomorrow.
Hope this explains Sprint's process a little better.

Buy denatured alcohol.. Dip your audio input into the alcohol very lightly.. And then stick the plug in the audio port, push in and out and turn and you should see better audio..
Dust and moisture residue gradually build up on the metal contacts and cause some interference..
Usually that issue is not the port, but thats not a be all-end all answer either.

Ok, wanted to share my experience...
The store i purchased my phone at initially is great, they have helped me with everything and have always been polite and courteous. After going to that store they told me to simply take it to their readynow store and they will fix it no problem. That combined with the recommendations from techs in this forum i felt very good driving 20 miles with my screaming child to the store to get it resolved.
Im back after a very angry drive home. Not only did the manager at the store let me stand waiting to be helped facing her for 10 minutes before i asked to be helped, she acted as if i were a retarted person and pointed out the audio jack on top and showed me how to put the headphone jack in.
When I explained that for the sake of better sound quality and accessories I have always used the bottom port for audio and it obviously is malfunctioning (it goes on and off when something is plugged in to audio in th mini usb)
She let out a sigh and said she would see if the tech will "even look at it". When she came back she told me that the tech says that the mini usb isn't intended for audio use and he wouldn't accept it.
I explained that my local store told me this would be taken care of here no problem and it was covered under warranty, and i spoke with a few techs online who recommended the same, and now your saying im SOL? she says yes.
I have heard horror storys about bad sprint service but I have never been treated by a company that i support with my money monthly this way. THE WORST CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD! I would be fired if i talked to a customer like that and just shrugged off their problem.
Sorry for the rant

Just FYI, and I'm not saying you'd want to take it to court, but courts have upheld that defects in products that could not be caused by software/firmware changes must be covered under warranty even if the user changed it to some unauthorized version. The case I'm thinking about was regarding a hacked game console but the same would theoretically apply to a phone. This would have to be something like the screen dying or the usb port going bad. If the processor died they could possibly argue that you caused it with under/over clocking attempts.

Need to purposely permanently brick phone...

So... my girlfriend decided to spill water on my Droid 2 and thank god It did not have a battery in. I let it dry for a couple days and everything works perfectly fine but it seems that some liquid seeped into the glass screen and when it dried it left blotches that are covering the screen and annoying.
What I want to know and do is how to permanently brick my droid 2 and if my thought process is right.
Brick the phone, call VZW, get a next day air replacement, send the brick phone back. Everything ok?
Uh, you're thought process is very wrong. And technically that is fraud.
You're a real idiot to post this on a public forum. Especially one as well regarded as XDA developers.

Besides, they can still tell there was water damage. There is a little dot near the sdcard that should be white with red x's. When it comes in contact with water, it turns completely red. If it does, your warrenty is completely void, even if the phone is bricked.

In 10 years of owning a cell phone I have never lost, broken or spilled anything on it. So in my case, insurance for the most part would have been a waste. Also, insurance, unless it covers loss, is a fraud within itself.
My friends have never purchased insurance and have just strolled into the stores (VZW) and exchanged for a refurbished make.
But, yes, I should have gotten insurance.
Also, to the people who are claiming fraud, don't throw stones if you live in a glass house.

Look buddy, you can try to justify yourself however you want. The fact is, what your doing is fraud, and you shouldn't be asking people how to brick your device to get a new one. Plan and simple.
About the wireless tethering. I'm almost positive Verizon knows about these forums. They would be stupid if they didn't. Therefor I'm sure they know about the wireless tethering apps out there, THAT ARE ON THE MARKET NO LESS, and yet they don't try to get it shut down so they obviously aren't that worried about it. And don't you think if the wireless tether app was so illegal google would have taken it off the market? The way I look at it, I'm paying for UNLIMITED DATA, why should it matter if I share some with a computer.
Now go ahead and dispute this however you want (I know your going to), but you might as well go somewhere else cause you won't get much help here. Thanks

Stop talking about the people who root their phones and void their warranty that is bad yes, but completely software related. Has nothing to do with the appearence or the general ability of the phone to do all its tasks. As someone said above be glad it is not broken and live with it. Its your own fault it got "ruined".
Also, the market is run by google not verizon so anything posted their is out of Verizons hands. Still illegal and not saying its right but it is much more out of verizons hands.
And to answer your question there is no way to brick your phone to the point of it not working without Verizon noticing. Deal with it.
This thread is out of hand. Stop flaming. This topic probably doesn't break the forum rules, so if you think it's of questionable ethic, don't post, or report it and let the forum mod make the call.

Voiding Warranty and Fraud
There's nothing illegal or fraudulent about rooting your phone in and of itself, all it does is void the warranty. However, if someone was going to root their phone, then unroot it and send it back to the manufacturer under the warranty, THAT would technically be fraud, but that's completely irrelevant in this case.
Why do you even need to brick it anyway? The spots on your screen seem like enough of a reason to try and get a replacement.
What you tell them of how it actually happened is all on you though.

Several people had theirs replaced for free so as long as you don't get a **** of a tech....
For those that are on the beta Bonsai 4.1.0b9 the 2 quickest ways to get back to 4.0.1 is to flash 4.0.1 then run one click root Clockwork Mod 3.0.0.6 since it does not play nice with the imbedded 3.0.2.4 from 4.1.0 or you can Odin EB13 prerooted with CWM 3.0.0.6 then after converting to EXT 4 restore a nandroid of 4.0.1. Reflash 4.0.1 after that to disable journaling. Then Odin the EC05 modem.
EB13 link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
One click root CWM 3.0.0.6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612
If anyone needs Odin let me know.
charge the battery for an hour or so. then try to get into download mode again. if you can, stop and charge the battery to full. if you can't, it may actually be bricked. download mode uses alot of juice, and you can think you're bricked when you really just have a dead battery.

One of the guys with the bricked phones had extra batteries charged, and no go. Another just came back from the Sprint store and they ordered him another phone after trying to revive it for 2 hours. Whatever this is, it is really bricking the phones. It could be CWM 3.0.2.4 related since that was imbedded in the ROM.

I didn't take it seriously until the 4th bricked phone. I even tried to convince myself that I would be safe with the Genocide kernel on it. But then common sense took over and I went back to 4.0.1 and passed the word here.
After taking my brick in and they worked with it for a couple of hours they said they would replace it no questions asked. When I first went in I told them I took it off the charger and it wouldn't turn on. Nothing they could do would get it running.

Could someone explain to me why Sprint should be eating the cost of replacing these phones?

And they don't eat the phones. They get refurbed and given to the next insurance claim.
They shouldn't be, but things like this is exactly the ammunition they need to lock down the bootloader, up insurance cost, etc. . .
I am not sure why anyone would think it would be okay to rob a bank and then tell everyone about it, but people seem to think posting in a public forum is some how annomymous.
No I am not saying anyone is going to get in trouble, but a simple google search pulls this stuff up.

Really? You are on the side of the insurance company? The same one that gets $7 a month from most people and then instead of giving people a new phone immediately makes them wait for a refurbed one, a couple of days. The same insurance that makes you wait a couple of days to get your keyboard fixed instead of giving you another phone. Believe me they are not losing any money. Don't cry for them.

Indeed, they are not losing anything. In fact, the insurance industry is the only field that hires more mathematicians than NASA. They make sure that no matter what, prices and deductibles are set so they profit. It's one of the longest going scams in history. I have TEP on 5 lines. So I don't feel bad when someone gets their money's worth.

Banks are insured too. So should we say the same thing when they're robbed? Hell, let's not even go after the people who robbed it because they're insured right?
Somebody has to eat the cost any time a claim is made. And unfortunately, it's the consumer. TEP used to be $5 a month. Nobody is forced to have insurance on their phone. And nobody is forced to load custom ROMs either. Don't try to justify the risk you took by thinking you're entitled to a claim any time you want it.
Auto insurance companies deny claims all the time because of negligence. Why should we all pay when someone is doing 150mph down the freeway? It's the same concept here.
Ok bonsai fans, please stop talking about getting phones replaced. We are starting to attract all the party poopers and well they are going to poop on your party(in a ****ty arnold voice)

[Q] Found a Galaxy S5

Topic closed! Got my answer. Thank you for everyone.
If you hand it into the police (At least in the UK) after a period of time, 4 weeks or something, it legally becomes yours if no-one claims it and you can go and collect it
Hand it In its being tracked
Not only that, but a local mobile network operator have no right to say you can keep a phone that does not belong to you, just because it was lost
Only the police can do that, and only after they try to find the rightful owner / give them a chance to report it lost and have it returned

Forgot to add. Because phone was locked, I wiped it clean (3 button combination).
If I hand it in - who will give me all the funds i invested? Nobody. Hope isnt at my side.
Yes, I was dumb to replace the broken parts myself. But whats done, its done.
So. Can I use Google Play? Can I use WIFI or 4G?

Wipe data & system and install a new rom via Odin and you're done.
Wipe data removes 99% of tracking apps, wiping system removes the rest.
Use a custom recovery and delete everything than use a custom rom/kernel and flash modem/bootloader files too via odin

not quite
It is traceable via IMEI.
But someone who lost this phone (apparently it looks like this) and phone was bought on contract, there is huge possibility that someone will block IMEI on network provider. After that 2 ways left. Sell it to foreign country or use it w/o mobile network.

oh, yes you guys are right. forgot the old ways now that everything is smart. On "dumb" phoness you were able to change the imei with the right tools, never tried it on smarthphones. Anyway the chances that someone who throwed away a smashed phone without battery to be looking for it are slim, i would use it

Maybe someone used this phone for criminal purpose and that is the reason of smashing it?

And that has something to do with him because ... ? phones don't comit crimes, people do. Let's say police was tracking a phone for some reason, once the criminal sells the phone it will be tracked for an X amount of time until police knows for certain the buyer doesn't have anything to do with the seller. Anyway more than 50% of phones out there have been used in... unapropiate way from prank calling to showing the latest vid of a gf to your friends (and you know what I mean by prank and vid).
Let us not make any more of what it is: a found phone, repaired, end of story. Nobody will come after it and if it does you can show the owner the receipt for spare parts. If he is as honest as wanting his/her phone back at least they can pay for repairs.
Just use it if you really wanted to... The authorities aren't gonna bother raiding your home and arresting you and stuff just for the sake of a lost phone. So just use it normally. If they blocked it then fine just use it as a gaming device or multimedia device. If someone tracked it then give it back to them and charge them the cost for fixing it. If it really came into accusing you of stealing(which has 0.1% chance of happening) then dare them a lie detector test.

Agree! Just wanted to underline that there is no point to thinking 'what if'... Because we can get a really paranoic point such as cospiracy theory or something else...
Use it as long as you can and want.
