mobitv sucks :( - HD2 General

i'm in the market for an app (paid or otherwise) that can stream LIVE tv. when i saw that there was a trial membership for mobitv, i was excited...until i started using it. the resolution sucked, there's only about 4 live channels with the rest being saved replays...and tmo expect people to pay $10/month for this junk!? spbtv can do better. their channels sucked, but at least the channels were live. and it's a one-time fee.
does anyone have recommendations for an app that can stream live tv at a...respectable resolution? in particular, i'm looking for one that can serve my sports fix (espn, fox sports, etc). any opinions is appreciated

From what I hear Slingbox is pretty nice. Little expensive to setup but is pretty cool when you set it up. I don't think its actually live more of a DVR that streams to devices.

I got pissed off and called Tmobile and asked why the other 3 tele's have free tv and i got to pay for this. Then i found out I have to pay for telenav as well......I never had to pay for those services! Of course she just said "im sorry" But yea besides slow speed the mobile tv and telenav issue really bothers me.

This is why it sort pays to have 2 lines. Cause I have the g1 on the other line which has google maps and there's a free add on app that adds turn by turn talk navigation to it again FREE!!!! This is the only thing I hate about the HD2 as well as ALL OTHER Win Mo devices, everything worth having costs. That's where the iphone and droid based phones will ALWAYS excel beyond Win Mo devices.

FREE SkyTV on Vodafone 3G!!!!

Ok, so Vodafone UK is offering FREE SKY TV on your mobile until Jan via 3G. As I have unlimited 3G, would love to get it. Been in touch with Vodafone, they don't support the Jasjar (surprise, surprise). The only info they have to get it if you have a Vodafone 3G mobile, is to go to the Vodafone Live! on your mobile, and there is an entertainment link which takes you there. Problem is that even though I have all 3G settings set to Vodafone ( APN "internet", username "web", password "web") the Vodafone Live! page on PIE (Pocket Internet Explorer) comes up only in a basic form with certainly no entertainment link. I tried asking them at least for a URL, but they had no idea. Anyone out there know if we can get this going, would be just awesome on the JasJar's VGA screen!!!
Am I the only one that wants SKY TV on the JasJar?
In a word: Yes.
lol
No seriously why would you want to watch compressed streaming TV at a ridiculous cost per MB?
As far as I am aware wmp doesnt even do full screen.
I'd rather have a bowl of pork farms sausages and a sexual encounter with a rhesus monkey ..
But then I am a tremendous pervert.

That is offensive. One of my best looking dates was a rhesus monkey!
lol
And one of my best dates was with a Pork Farms sausage
When on unlimited usage, watching SKY TV in my car while I'm waiting for the wife to finish her shopping, seems like a good idea, no? Maybe better just to watch you on webcam with the rhesus monkey!!
If anyone is interested I answered this question on another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33294
Did a bit of experimenting to get it to work, although I don't think I've ever used it (except to test that it works, but it's FREE - for now!).
Quality is ok, but it is designed for small res mobiles.

T-mobile TV

Whats the general consencers on the mobile TV ? after trying it out I am far from impressed, picture quality is like 3/10 maybe 5/10 if your watching somebody who's not moving, the sound I thought was pretty good but to pay for that service.....not on your nelly !
@ the moment it's free and i'm still not going to use it again screwed my poor eyes up watching all these grains, but thats just my opinion.
I never saw vodafone TV work, can anyone confirm if it's the same sort of quality ?
the only comparison I have is on three. that is spot on with real live tv. I agree with you, as the tmobile service stands I won't be paying for it!
if the content changed more often (i.e daily/live tv) i'd be tempted to subscribe, especially as it is pretty cheap on the monthly option
If you are really serious about tv on your device... I would get an unlimited data plan and buy a slingbox. I just got a slingbox for fathers day. I can watch every channel from Concast. Plus I can control my DVR and watch all my recorded programs. It sure beats Cingular TV, or what ever they call it.
Slingmobile also works over wi-fi...
John
Better that nowt
I believe £3.50 (t-mobile - uk) is not too much of a price to pay.. but the quality is that if "3" when it started its video promo a few years ago. To be honest though we all pay through the nose for this sort of product through ads anyway. Me personally ,I would rather wait for for intergration on DVB-H (not DVB-T) or an add on where you would pay a one off fee like you do for a set top box. Until then, this service is an added bonus for a network that does more for it's customer like say Orange/Vodaphone don't.
The internet has been mobile for a while now even though Vodaphone has started to coin in on this phase.
Saying that I just cancelled my Sat subscription cos I could watch the Nasa space launch within my internet bundle. Plus I can watch 24, lost etc via the network channels anyway, So My Vario 2 is more than capable and I get to take it where I want when I want. (Hopefully the signal in cleethorpes will be better next time I go to the seaside (coast)) Hehe
@Johndawg, I was actually looking at getting a slingbox a littel while ago. So you would say by far this is the best way to have mobile TV on your pocket pc in regards to quality ? Does it matter what slingbox you get or are they about the same in what they offer for this service ? Also are you on web & walk £7.50 m8 ?
@Scootytoo, I to am thinking about canceling my Sky subscription, I can't believe how pants it become, but I love my football and thats where they shaft ya when you subscribe to a package as well as I now have the broadband max included, clever buggers !

There has been many forms of mobile tv over the past couple of years where the solution (very simliar to the slingbox) has pumped media via wlan/net etc. The tech was very limited and fussy. I.e using tv card with a stream app. Too much messing around and the end result not worth the effort. Besides, this slingbox is a clean idea for people with land lines and home broadband. I have had this contract with t-mobile since they were known as one to one. Swapped once to get the spv e200 just so I could watch media such as this. then came back to t-mobile for compact, vario and now the vario 2. I don't have a land line so therefore the slingbox won't work for my family as this is my only means of net access. What I'm trying to do is streaming vid or music from my set top box or sat box (freesat - at present) then onto my brake out box for nvidia tv/vid card combie. Not perfect, but does the job as I save the media then drop it on to flash card to use later. But Recently I wanted to watch the nasa online tv station for latest launch, vario 2 just couldn't cope so I used my Tablet pc with vario 2 as the modem. It was good, but not true mobile tv. As for sat... Like I said before we pay for media via the products I.e ads, then they get upset cos you want to cancel. fair enough I was only paying 15 pounds per month, but for three shows a week such as lost, 24 and daybreak. it would have been cheaper to wait for the box sets. but I have ended up with Freesat which as you may know is better than a standard freeview box. bonus!

Sprint TV

This is probably the wrong forum to ask this on, but does anyone have an idea of what a full package line-up from the Sprint TV service includes? I have the free tv that comes w/ the phone, and it's pretty cool and I think I would use it more if the programming was better - any ideas on where I could get a schedule for the channels they carry? I'm not talking about the free ones, but all of the pay channels they have - it's very vague on the website.
You can see everything available from your phone. Not worth the money you have to pay, IMO. Get yourself a used Slingbox on eBay, and watch the TV you already pay for at home on your TV. I've had mine for months and it is BAD ASS!
So your slingbox sends it to the phone huh. Good call man! I didn't even think of that! Thanks.
Yup.....through the existing internet connection you have at home, the Slingbox can control your tv, cable box, satellite box, etc. Depending on which model of Slingbox you get, you can control multiple devices and it can control your DVR and even a DVD player. It's better than way than to pay Sprint a monthly fee for no where near as many channels. Not to mention, you can view the Slingbox on 3G, 4G or WiFi and SprintTV only lets you use your 3G signal.

Explain...
I agree on the Slingbox. I've had mine for years and it has been great. It works perfect on my Evo with 3g coverage.
Sprint TV works just as poorly as it did when I first tried it several years ago on a Treo 700.

hmm, it works pretty damn good on my phone.
I haven't grabbed a Slingbox yet, but I'm going to next Monday. I appreciate the help.
Slingbox quality on evo?
How is the quality of the picture when using the slingbox app on your evo? Does it get a constant feed or does it buffer often? You can watch dvr'd progams through the application? I definitely might be interested based on your feedback.

[Q] XOOM and Verizon Questions:

I am saying goodbye to my ATRIX, At&t has ZERO 3g in my area. Despite their map suggesting "data" connection, I have to drive almost 2 hours to get off of EDGE. So anyway, I was wondering a few things about the XOOM if you guys don't mind sharing some knowledge.
Taxes and Extra fees: How much does Verizon add to your bill past the initial 20 dollars? Do they let you change your plan mid-month if you think you will need more data so long as you haven't already gone over?
Tethering: Does verizon allow the XOOM to create a wifi hotspot? Could barnacle or some other third party app do the same without all the fuss?
Gaming: Is it difficult to play games on the tablet? Is it too large to hit the buttons properly while holding it in one hand?
Mounting: Is there any easy solution to mount it to a dashboard? I would need it to function as a GPS device, movie viewer and gaming center while I am either driving or riding around.
Thanks for the input guys. My work pays for my phone, but they won't provide me with a smartphone. This seems like it is the most effective way to go.

standard taxes/fees. assume 15-18% to be safe and yes you can change your plan midmonth, no contract extension or anything. you can even do it if you have gone over and we will backdate the plan to avoid overages. just beware of standard proration. wifi hotspot is a feature in the settings. built into your plan, i.e no extra cost. some emulators are rough but games from the market are simple to operate. no nav mount yet, not in corp stores at least (im a sales rep.)

Holding it in one hand and actually using it is not easy. GPS works fine as long as you have data, no data no directions.
Sent from my Xoom
Dont know about taxes and fes but the whole billing process is a hassle. Its not as streamlined as ipad. Its like opening up a brand new line on a cellphone.
Gaming is fun currently and will be more so when more games are released
Movie viewing seems to be hit or miss depending on who you talk to. It possible and capable, but not right out of the box.
I hope when you say for driving your only talking about the GPS portion. Because if your gonna be looking down at your xoom to watch a movie or play a game while your driving ill be sure to stay off the roads in your city.

Hah, well I would need to use it as GPS, or maybe tether to another phone to use as GPS. So some kind of dash mount may be necessary. And as far as the gaming and movies I was referring to when I am a passenger. I tend to play emulated games more than anything really, so it is nice to just throw the thing up somewhere and pull out a wiimote.
(hopefully wiimotes work on this, unlike samsung)

If it's anything like the google books app, it isn't an option.
I'm guessing it's to stop lame freetard just pirating everything rather than buying.
Those scumbags really annoy me, as it means I end up paying more to finance their freetard lifestyle.
Not to say you're crazy Peter, but some of us "freetards" are forced to pirate. For instance I live in a place where I can't buy The New Yorker unless I pay about 10 pounds for it, and it's 3 weeks old. If I actually bought it I'd consider myself a paidtoomuchtard. I live where there is no Hulu, or iPlayer, so again I'm forced to pirate. Today I wanted to watch Matt Taibbi talk to Elliot Spitzer on Al Gore's TV station and was forced to use a VPN because I was geoblocked. Yes I know I'm a rare case, but me likeee pirateee!
All that said, could you explain why, and exactly when you are forced to pay more for any content you consume? Movie prices have only risen due to inflation, music may actually be cheaper now than when I bought my last CD late last century due to ITunes (iTards?), and the costs of wired and wireless internet is solely driven by oligopolistic carriers, not the volume of data being pirated? Print media has definitely taken it on the chin, and you have a good argument if you were to talk about The Times' paywall costing you money, but before the online days you had to pay for a newspaper, and I can't speak to whether or not that price, adjusted for inflation, is markedly higher or not. It has taken many pressmen's jobs, reduced demand for newsprint, but in this it has slowed the ravaging of forests and the resultant pollution that comes from paper making.
