Hi All,
I'm running 1.66.00WWE & when i send SMS messages to people sometimes only half of it comes through for them. The SMS's are not over the character limit, for example a 20 char SMS sometimes only comes out with the first 10.
Anyone else had this problem or know of a solution?
I've had this problem before. For the recipient, it's similar to that of recieving a multi-page sms which of course takes time to update on their phone.
I just wrote it off as a service provider problem, but if others have the same problem, maybe it is handset related.
Truncated SMS Messages
I too am having problems with truncated messages (just no text actually) on some occasions. Not sure if it is reception related or what. Can anyone help. I'm running latest versions of ROM on o2 XDA II, using an Orange SIM
In my case it was all or nothing. I ended up putting +44 in front of all my UK mobile numbers and that seemed to solve it -not sure if it is the same problem as you are having though.
I also had the similar prob before, and got it solved with the help of gazzaman2k. Try this out, this might do it.
1.) Go to Inbox
2.) At the bottom, Click Accounts, then Accounts again.
3.) Tap *SMS
4.) Untick \"Send SMS messages using unicode when necessary\"
5.) Press \'OK\' then the \'X\'
Let me know if this fixes it.
was supposed to POST reply to thig, but Gut_S beat me to it, hehehe.
YUP, unticking that SEND SMS using UNICODE when necesarry will solve this problem, and TELL your friends about it. SERVICE providers GAIN a LOT from this bug coz you might think your sending only 1 SMS but actually it is counted as 2 or even 3 mesages by the network.
cheers.
Hi everyone,
On my Razr I could extend the number of characters allowed for an SMS message from 140 to something like 300 using a firmware hack. Apparently if it is too long Bell’s network splits it up into two messages. Anyway, I would imagine doing something like this on a WM device should be easier? Or not?
Is there a registry setting we can use to give us a little more space when typing out SMS’s?
I can almost swear I found this in the registry back when I had a Wizard but I can't remember where. Damn those hundreds of registry entries...
If I find the same entry on my Sprint Touch I'll let you know.

I'd be surprised if this worked generically, though it might work for a few circumstances. SMSs are fixed at 160 by convention and it would require cooperation of *every* relay in the chain to get an increase, not just at the sender's client end. I know that from my testing, Sprint pretty much obeys the 160 char rule and doesn't seem to pass anything beyond 160. Perhaps Bell does, but you'd also need the cooperation of the other carrier, any 3rd party services in between (most inter-carrier SMS relays are handled by a 3rd party), and also the recipient's device.
sprint told me sms were supposed to be 500 characters when i signed up, yea i believed them, haha
On most other Bell phones I think the limit is 160 (on the Touch it's 140). Perhaps that is because the Touch lets you enter a “subject” line? At any rate is it possible to extend it and then I can experiment with how long a message I can send.
So you just want it to allow you to type a message more then 160 characters? For instance if you go over that it will allow you to continue to type but when you send it then it will break it up into however many messages that it needs too? Or are you trying to send a message in on txt that is longer then 160?

Thats all fine and good but that doesn't answer the question. Sorry if that comes off a little rude(not intended offensively). That merely explains the concept of SMS and how it can be 70-160 characters depending on bits. It is also for the GSM service whereas we have CDMA devices.
Thanks for trying though.

Well, like it or not, that material is extremely relevant, because the priorities are interoperability and economy of transmission. Sprint originally *tried* to go on its own with its Shortmail service, which allowed 1000 chars, but it fell down on precisely those two issues: the long messages would only work within the Shortmail system and obviously could not work across other carriers, and its implementation was not "lightweight", but relied on the Internet and dedicated website -- not economical at all. Obviously in the end, Sprint folded up and joined the rest of the world in supporting standard SMS specs. The great part about SMS is that it uses so little resources and therefore can co-exist with voice channels and doesn't require a "heavyweight" data channel (of course that means transporting SMSs cost carriers next to nothing to provide and yet carriers can charge $$$ for SMS)...
Previously on any GSM phone I've had, txt msgs were 160 characters (if longer it would span to multiple messages). Now that I've moved to Bell (CDMA), the Touch only allows 140 before spanning. If you type an accented character by mistake (such as with the accented a character always popping up), it doesn't tell you, but the message gets clipped down to 70 characters (and spanned across multiple). I suspect these missing 20 characters are related to some sort of character-set identification, specifying the bit-count of the characters you're using. When you use an accented character, you get 16-bit characters, resulting in even less.
Long story short, there should be some way to get 160 character messages, as that's the "standard" for most providers. Whether its possible on our phones is another question. Also, has anyone else noticed that our phone won't join multi-sms messages back into a single message? If someone sends me a message of 200 characters, I literally get 2 seperate messages, whereas on my previous GSM Atom, it went and joined it back into one...

I have noticed that I am now getting multiple messages from the same person and they obviously look like one long message broken up. I don’t know if my Razr (my previous phone) used to reassemble them or if I just never received such long text messages before but in any case I have only noticed it since getting the Touch.
If the network automatically splits up long text messages and most phones reassemble the message back into one then what would be the problem with allowing the Touch/Vogue, or any phone for that matter, to send messages of 160, 200, 300 whatever length? Especially if this is as light on network resources as they?
Can anyone confirm the 140 vs. 160 character limit due to the subject line present in the Touch? It might seem like a small difference but that extra 20 characters can really come in handy!! Percentage wise it’s a pretty big difference.
Dear all
bought my HD2 sim-free and have been using it for 1-2 days now.
it is manila 2.5.19211619.0 & rom 1.48.405.2 (71294)WWE
while we wait for HTC to allow us to use our GBP500 handsets to send SMS reliably, I thought I'd compile a list of other problems with the new HTC messaging interface - perhaps if anybody from HTC is reading, they could use it as a sort of wish-list. Feel free to add your own woes.
also, if anybody knows any fixes for the behaviour i am reporting here - please let me know!!
1. It sometimes doesn't send SMS (well-known issue, sure - texting myself seems to do the trick so far but hardly ideal to have to check outbox every half hour)
2. It cannot mark received/read SMS as unread (if i'm wrong here, please let me know)
3. it is difficult to select a whole bunch of messages - you ought to be able to hold down and drag to select, say, adjacent 5 messages in the "all msgs" view, in order to then action them (eg. retry send ! )
4. in all messages view, the side-scrolling bar does not enlarge itself after a short tap, unlike in eg. file explorer.
5. when you are composing a new SMS, as you start typing letters of somebody's name, some of the contact suggestions are associated with that person's mobile number (as expected) whereas other contacts are suggested with their *email address* (even when you have the mobile number for that contact) so that it tries to send the SMS to that person's email address. Not very clever. if anybody knows how to fix this please let me know.
6. if you use PIM backup to restore eg. 500 SMS, you may mysteriously find the following day that many of them have disappeared. spooky.
7. it (HTC messaging) is so arrogant that it provides no easy way for the user to revert to WM SMS program. not very "make it mine" is it HTC?
8. (thanks to DavrosMackenzie below for reminding me) what a WEIRD bug - when you attempt to put a ! or ? at the end of your cursor when composing SMS, the cursor reverts to a random point in the message and your punctuation mark is in the middle of some random word.
UPDATE: I have sent the above 8 items to HTC support via email on their website.
9. there is no "SMS sent" notification as there was in eg. WM5.0
Largely speaking I only see 7) as the issue. If the Windows messaging app were easily available then you'd simply be able to choose between a flawless functional app versus stylish but primitive.
However personally I still haven't found a way to revert the the Windows messenger app, all the methods I've found here on the forum fail to work fully. So then I guess I'm stuck too with the other points mentioned. It's all ostly minor to me except 1) of course. If I need to any more complicated message organizing I just do it through the MS My Phone web interface and sync.
Also 4) is a feature not a bug The expanding scroll bars are only for the default native controls which need to be dragged themselves, hence the expanding button for easy finger usage. The HTC scrollbar doesn't need that as the whole screen reacts to a sliding finger for scrolling the view.
The inconsistency is a bit odd I suppose but that's what happens when your on an evolved platform rather than a new one.
thanks for the LIST, have you send it to HTC yet?
I have been bugging them about the SMS stuck in outbox issue every 2nd day ...
you also missed out the SLOW loading SMS while there are more than 20 sms-s in coversation view.~
hmm...for me its the no. 4 which is a bit irritating but i can live with it...since in my case it shows both the number as well the email for the same name...
btw...i know this works for some people and for some dont, but messaging problem seems to go away if you select
1. GSM in messaging
2. put the local mesaging centre number...
havent faceda any sms problem till now...
Instead of using pim backup you should use the sync application microsoft my phone....
Lag when opening messages, we all know about that though.
This one i've only seen one other person mention and thats when i come to put a ! or ? at the end the cursor jumps to some random point in the message, basically means i have proof read every damn message and its starting to really annoy me.
I've an un-branded Vodaphone device thanks to mobiles.co.uk and have upgraded the ROM from the 1.43 through to 1.61 and this nagging little bug has been present in all.
The predictive text has become alot better, to the point now where i can write txts much quicker but the other problems make txtsing a nightmare compared to the iPhone.
I was so pissed off with the iPhone by the end of my run with it but it could text like a dream compared with this, i miss my apps sure but if the texting would work on the HD2 i wouldn't be considering moving back!
Not giving up yet though, will wait for a few more ROMS to come out and maybe HardSPL.

the slow sms loading buggs me. i have alot of text messages with my girl and It's annoying to everytime wait a minnit or so. also if you push the soft key menu and wait a second It's loads alot faster.
you may aspect from htc with a phone that costs a fortune it would be near perfect. but this one is nearly done. and dont come with the excuse that no phone is good out of the box, i know that but after al the tweaking i have done to this phone im getting the hang of it. but there are more bugs that anoy me.
1 slow downs in the sense interface.
2. the jittering of the keyboard.
3. the ghost typed key issue
4. and all the minor things what are to many to name.
well htc thank-you for this wonderfull phone. now make it mine.....
btw, could someone tell me where i can find the outbox for the sms utility?

To view your outbox, you need to have SMS in traditional mode.
Go to: All mesages > Menu > Settings > Traditional Mode.
Has anyone found a fix for this fundamental function of any phone. And we all know this is not a problem with WM6.5 as alot of us have been using 6.5 for some time (myself on my polaris, using Kostas ROM), so therefore HTC really F#@K this up.
I have another one, the sms notification sound almost never gets activated... I am on 1.43 O2.
Most of the time I have to click "compose new text" when in converstional mode at least 10 times before it actually lets my type! It doesn't matter how many messages I have with that contact so isn't a lag thing!

I got GSM in messaging, and +xxx in the messaging number.
But I still get SMS stuck in outbox every couple of days ...
HTC Messaging is not working with MMS to email. The pictures doesn't have a last name (extension), and will not be reconiced as an .jpg, and therefore not show in correctly.

When I create an SMS and enter the first few letters of a contacts name, all available phone numbers for that person are listed. However, the icons indicating the type of contact number (work, mobile, home, etc.) are incorrect. All are displayed as mobile so I do not know which is the actual mobile number and which are the others. Is this the same for everyone else? I've reflashed to 1.48 and installed the SMS patch from HTC.
Hi guys,
I've been having issues with sending text messages in the past few days, and it has come on since being at my parents. At first I thought it might have been a problem in the local area, but today I travelled out of the area and my texts aren't getting through still.
I have the delivery report turned on, and each time i send a message that is greater than 160 characters, it comes back saying "The message sent to <recipientname> is not reachable". I've done a bit of googling but I haven't found anything useful. I only really text my girlfriend and we quite often send messages that are 160 characters in length. \
Any ideas what a cause may be? I will be trying to contact the mobile operator (T-Mobile) but I want to be sure it isn't the phone being silly.
Much appreciated if you guys can help
could be a simple hangup between area antennas.
Have you done a soft reset ? If yes, simply run the com wizard again and it should work.
A soft reset has done the trick, thanks
I am having a similar issue except that any text message above 159 characters is not received by one particular person I send it to. I am using my HD2 on O2 contract and the person I am texting is using an LG 910 on Virgin Mobile PAYG. They can send me long text messages fine but they just can't receive them from me.
Also, other people using different phones on different networks can receive long text messages ok from me. Also the person I am texting can receive long text messages from other people.
If I send a long text message with the *0# sequence to request an SMS delivery notification I get a confirmation back saying it was delivered but the person I sent it to never receives the text.
I am wondering if this is some compatibility issue between the HD2 SMS messaging software and the LG 910 phone. Its all very annoying!
Also a soft reset doesn't make any difference either.
Many thanks,
Richard.
hey guys,
ive always had a few bugs with this HD2 (some seem pretty common, and tolerable/fixable)... but lately ive been having so pretty frustrating problems, causing me to soft reset 10+ times a day.
ill try list these issues and describe them accurately, and if anyone has any suggestion on ways to resolve them... i would greatly appreciate the help.
- often freezes when trying to send SMS messages. i use Zenyee's sms patch, to allow my to use the WINMO client. what usually happens is, i can select to create a new SMS, type the SMS all without hassle... but as soon as i hit the send button (bottom left softkey)... i get the windows loading animation (4 coloured dots circling in center of screen), and thats where is freezes, i have given the phone hours to 'load' and complete the SMS send operation... but it jsut sits there.. loading.
- i have another common issue relating to SMS. it seems the HD2 cannot recognise when i have read an SMS. i receive a new SMS, i open, read, and sometimes delete the new SMS... but sense still displays the 'unread' icon on the slide-bar. S2U2 also is still seeing an unread SMS... but there is no unread SMS. this happens 95% of the time when i receive and SMS. i have to reset to get rid of this notification OR if i reply to this new SMS... once i have dismissed the "message sent' notification, the phone recognises the fact i have no unread SMS.
- quite often i cannot wake my phone up from being asleep, this also seems to happen only when i receive a new SMS. i get the flashing LED (at ear speaker) letting me know i have an unread SMS/call/etc, but upon hitting the hardware buttons to wake phone up... i get no response.
- there are also a few occasions where i dont receive any SMS at all, over the last few days... ive had quite a few people call me and ask if i received the SMS they have sent me. i have also tested this myself, sent myseld about half a dozen test SMS with out receiving any of them. i am still receiving some messages, but there are also quite a few that i am not getting. this issue could be caused by my network provider, thought id mention it anyway.
it seems that most of these issues are SMS related. i did have quite a few texts in my inbox and sent items box (around 1500), but i have deleted many of them and am now down to around 300, and im still having problems.
so... if anyone has any suggestions to resolve these issues... i welcome the advice. before i resort to hard reset.
cheers guys.

sorry i do not experience this problem at all and i believe this is uncommon. there is a new sms function update hotfix posted by HTC couple of days back. this updates the messenging client to 2016. try it.
did you try uninstalling your sms cab that you are using and trying that for a few days to see if you still get the freezes? If you are stock you should try the previous posters suggestion and update your ROM and try it without the sms cab and see how it goes.
thanks for the tips guys, ill have a look at the hotfixes. with the telstra ROM i have, i can use the HTC SMS client without the major lag issues - but i still prefer the WINMO client for the folder support and other functions that are absent in the HTC client.
ill check out your suggestions, and let you know how it goes.
cheers again for taking the time to read and reply.
after looking at the htc site, i have noticed that the new SMS hotfix only applies to ROM versions less than 1.66.
that suggests my current ROM may already have these fixes applied.

i'm running 1.66 ROM and is still able to install. I still think there is no harm downloading and try installing the hotfix. if it says unable to install, so be it. =)
fair call, im downloading it now. will certainly let you know how it goes.
thanks mate.
I installed HTC's SMS hotfix, and it seems they have increased the folder support in their SMS client. previously... from what i can remember, they had only a few SMS folders visible in their client, i think it was 'inbox', 'sent' and 'drafts'. now they have increased this and added 'outbox' and 'deleted items'.
anyway, this newer version of the HTC SMS client is much more usable than previous incarnations of this client.
and having removed zenyees SMS patch... i have had no repeat offences of any of the above listed issues. it has only been 12 hours-ish... but it is looking good so far.
the only problem i have now with the HTC SMS client is the integration with S2U2 (SMS slide to view defaults to conversation mode in the HTC client - i would prefer traditional mode). and also there is a text selection issue in the new message screen. i use the swype SIP and i frequently need to fix up my incorrect word inputs, in the WINMO client, this was easy (double tap the word, the select the correct word from the word suggestion list), however... in the HTC SMS client... double tapping does not select text, sometimes if i tap 4 times i can select the word and promt swype's word suggestion list to appear... but not always).
but these issues with HTC's SMS client are far more tolerable than the problems i was experiencing with the WINMO client.
thanks for all your help guys.
i will keep you posted on further developments.
cheers.
Glad that the hotfix helps in one way or another. On the other hand, now we all knows this hotfix doesn't actually limit to ROM 1.66 and below.
it does seem to increase to functionality of the HTC SMS client. but between 1 ROM upgrade and almost never using the HTC client... i cannot be 100% sure that these new 'features' are infact new. i know the 1.6X telstra ROM had a pretty weak HTC SMS client, and they did improve it alot for the 1.7X ROM - lessened the lag, and a few other fixes. after i upgraded to the 1.7X ROM, i still used the SMS patch to have the WINMO client as my default... so i never payed to much attention to that version of the HTC SMS client.
as i posted above, i have now noticed the improved folder support in the HTC SMS client... but i cant be 100% sure that this is a result of the 1.7X ROM upgrade... of the SMS hotfix. though i do think it was the hotfix, and the hotfix certainly did install without issue.
so if anyone else is using the latest telstra stock ROM.... what is the HTC SMS client like? enhanced folder support? less lag?
cheers again.
