What is Radio and Why update? - Hero, G2 Touch General

Could someone explain what a radio does and why I should update it?

.... And use the search function.

I did use the search but as you can imagine, it returns a lot of results.
Are all radios (GSM of course) compatible with all phones, and all ROMs?

Radio updates are device-specific and are also called ROMs. Only they update the radio part of your device (anything to do with wireless activity), while a "regular" ROM updates your system partition (containing the operating system).
Just make sure the radio you wish to flash is compatible with your device.

Where to find really old ROM's, radio's and SPL's?

I am one of those few, but mad, people with a Dream/G1, that has the SIM-problem where the phone claims that "your SIM doesn´t allow connection to this network" etc.
In my research to why this problem exists, I have seemed to trace it back to when the 1.5 version was released OTA. The operator functioning with the phone when the OTA update was installed will still funtion, but the other operators will sometimes stop working.
So now when I have tried countless ROMs based on 1.5 and 1.6, I want to get back to the earliest possible combination of ROM, radio and SPL to maybe get a fresh start. But where do I find "obsolete" ROM's etc for the Dream?
Today I´m running some experimental Hero-ROM with BLUR-objects by Drizzy, with latest radio and HardSPL (rooted of course). Is there any pitfalls in downgrading in any special order?
Best regards,
Christoffer
Several of us still have rom's saved on our pc's. You can ask for something and someone can provide it for you or you can google it and find older roms. Since you only have HardSPL there is no order to downgrade.
sounds like you want the RC29 image (US) or RC7 image (UK)
Both can be found HERE
This will replace rom, recovery, radio, and spl.
FYI, if you're running a Hero ROM (other than that tiny/mico/mini Hero one) then you're using the 1.33.2005 SPL, not Hard.

Newb question about downgrading radion and gapps

It has been mentioned over at the Modaco Forums that for AT&T Nexus one users the 3g reception is better if downgrading radio from shipped version EPE54B to ERE27 Radio. I want to try this but before I do I want to know that since I installed the latest Cyanogen Rom with gapps for EPE54B will the apps no longer work when I flash my radio to ERE27? Thanks in advance.
I find it strange that the ERE27 radio would be better for ATT 3G... but i you want to try that, go ahead and flash the radio via fastboot... no available ROM or firmware is tied to a radio version for the N1 and it won't disturb ur apps or settings...
craig thanks for the quick response, I find it strange too but take a look at the thread
http://android.modaco.com/content/g...exus-one-downgraded-radio-improved-reception/
it seems that a lot of people are having success with this. Another question if it doesnt matter what apps you have etc then why does cyanogen list the gapps for the different radio versions?
Well, with each new iteration of the official [leaked] firmwares, the cooks incorporate the updated Google Apps software and some firmware modules from within that ROM. So for a particular cooked ROM release, a specific Google Apps pack would work optimally with it. The radio on the other hand is simply the latest available at the time the ROM was released...

Extracting radio from nandroid backup

Hi folks,
I'm currently with Telus and I will be re-rooting my phone but I don't want to lose the radio that came with the phone. Is there a way to extract the radio, maybe from a nandroid backup?
I find the radio that comes default with the phone does not suck as much battery power as the other international radios do.
Thanks.
I might be wrong, but unless you flash a new radio, it remains when you flash a new rom....
Nandroid backups unfortunately don't include the radio.
Some people find that installing 63.18.55.06IU_6.35.08.22 gives performance that is similar to the Telus radio (63.18.55.06DAU_6.35.08.20).
Hopefully there is a way to extract a radio since I'm interested in that as well.

I can confirmed, since I've rooted my phone, I've tried all the Radio's available and the one I have found to work best is 63.18.55.06IU_6.35.08.22 ! Although some people are using other Radio's and find that they work as good as 08.22 so It's pretty much up to you to test the radio's and find the one that you think works for you!
Cheers
Take a look in the
[ROM] Official HTC Hero RUU ROM + Radio Links thread. (sorry they don't let new users post links)
The 08.22 radio you want is there. Download and put onto your SD card. After flashing your rom reboot into revovery and flash the radio file just like you did the rom file.
as someone sort of guessed at here, radios are something you don't have to worry about.
a radio doesn't get backed up or restored in nandroid. but also, a radio doesn't get flashed when you flash a new rom onto your phone.
the radio software stays exactly the same unless you specifically flash a different radio onto your phone. and then it stays like that forever too until you flash yet another different one on there.
so stick with your default radio, assuming telus actually sets it up with a telus-friendly-radio out of hte box...
if you accidentally screw it up, flashing .08.22 radio will get you back pretty close to where you are now in terms of performance. However none of us probably has the original radio from our telus phones any longer because this didn't become common knowledge until relatively recently, so if you CAN I suggest not flashing any radios on your phone at all ever. that way you will retain the radio software taht came with your phone which, hopefully, is better than anything else for our crazy telus requirements.
so go ahead and flash roms, you'll have no troubles.
When I first got my hero, prior to rooting, my reception at home was terrible. I would routinely get 0 to 1 bars. So this would have been with the stock Telus radio. In fact, every phone I've had has had terrible reception in this location. After flashing 08.22 I am now getting from 2 to 5 bars at home. So although the 08.22 radio is supposed to be close to the stock radio, I'm finding it quite a bit better. Your mileage may vary.
Moved to general as not development

The RADIO versions

I understand a little of what a RADIO is, that it controls the signal, battery etc. But when I have installed ROMS I have noticed that even ones that come with 'no radio installed, install use your own' I havn't needed a RADIO, so am I right in this or completely wrong?
I'm just going on an information binge here.
The 'radio' refers to the firmware of the radio modem that is in the phone. There are a few version out there with differences in how well the connect to towers and signal strength but I have personally found that the newer ones suck more juice. I am using the oldest radio that is still compatible with the newest roms and android builds.
It is already on your phone and you should not have to mess with it. Look in the windows mobile sections for leo and there should be more information

Radio/modem control

Hello,
Can some one please explain where and how can i make changes to the GSM stack for android based phones. I want to rewrite the GSM protocol stack so orders and commands to the device hardware will be different than original..
Sent from my Blade using XDA App
I may be wrong but i think its dependant on how the manufacturer implements the radio. On my htc inspire the radio can be flashed separate from the os, in fact in order to root and rom you need to downgrade to a radio version that has a known exploit.
Id recommend going to the forum for the device you are interested in and see how it deals with radio access
From something awesome
