Seriously.
So, yesterday around noon, I noticed that I didn't have a data connection. I checked my account on a desktop - all's good, don't owe 'em any dough. I call 'em up, expecting a network outage, or something similar.
"We're going to have to transfer you to our high balance department."... Um, Ok.
First person I talk to, figure out the situation fairly quickly; I've used 81GB in the last month, and despite being on the 25$ / month unlimited data plan, the system has freaked out and wants to charge me for it all - sort of. It's listed on my account as 'unbilled data charges'. Anyway, she re-enables my data plan, and will call me back when her supervisor is off the phone. She agrees with me that it's a bug, that my 25$ a month plan should cover it - it's unlimited, after all.
I call back about 3 hours later, and get a clueless guy. He basically tells me that he can't do anything, the ticket is already at a higher level than him, and that I should be getting a call tomorrow (that'd be today)... but goes on to discuss the issue with me anyway.
First, he tells me that he sees that I have 'unlimited web' - I say 'oh, heck no' - it's unlimited data; I'd never sign up for something called unlimited web. He agrees, but goes on to note that unlimited data doesn't cover 'downloading'. I ask him how he expects to view a web page without downloading data - oh, he didn't mean that, he means 'music and games'. Okay, how do they track that separately? He doesn't know - shocker, there. Whatever; I end the call.
This morning, I get a call from a somewhat more knowledgeable guy - admittedly, he opened the conversation by noting that I appeared to have excessive 'data roaming charges' - nope, never did any roaming - and that the useage in question was 'all last weekend' - I -wish- their network (or the Nexus!) could handle 80gb over a 48 hour period. We come to agree that this is basically a glitch in their system - they had to assign some max value somewhere to bytes used per month (there's no way programatically to say infinite, besides, warning bells when someone like me goes nuts with the bandwidth is probably useful to 'em), and I hit that limit, and the system couldn't figure out what to do billing-wise... Apparently, to clear the mess completely, they have to refer it up to some tech department, and I should hear back in ~ 72 hours or so.
So, long story shortened: 41,000$ is a scary number to hear over the phone, but 25$ unlimited data trumps 41,000$ billing glitch.

81GBs!!! Damn man, i can only imagine what you download!
Stop torrenting when you tether!!!!
But I was aware that when you reached the 10gb cap they have on thier data plans, they just throttle you to edge till your next billing cycle.
Woah, let me ask First of all. 81GB??? Thats a hell of a lot data. im thinking tethering maybe? But whatever thast not the problem here.
So i took a look around T-mobile.com and the Plan specifically says " Unlimited Data" not web or any of that so you're right.
However i would expect for T-mobile to give you problems after reaching such "limit"
Keep us posted with your Talk with the reps and if you ever have any questions always ask to speak with a supervisor to handle this specific issue. Im thinking they should let you go with a warning.
For what? well unlimited is never unlimited but rather just another word for anytime use over the period of a month. Yup!
and i have read however like the G1 plan came with a 10Gb Cap unlimited data. meaning that you can access the internet 24/7 while staying under the 10GB range of data downloads.
But that does not apply so much as after you reach such levels, you should be "capped" right, meaning cut off the internet for the remaining period of the month. So dont let them convince you otherwise, i dont even make that a YEAR ...WTF????
THATS A PRETTY BIG NUMBER, i'd shoot myself.
Good Luck and let me know how it goes
Happend to me once when i had my palm treo, Except it was 1,600$ my parents about had a heart attack when they got the bill in the mail.

Well my mom called the next morning to see what was going on and apparently it was some roaming charges, we were in Mexico the following week for vacation but luckily we got to talk to a supervisor or some head guy and they took them off, just charged the regular data plan.
81GB of data transfer in one weekend? i don't think i do that much in a month between my phone, PC, xbox, PS3, AND laptop. damn man lol
hope it all works out in the end.
There was a Guy on att last year who got a 20k bill for slingboxing a whole football game.
I hope it gets cleared up. The only possible way to reach 80gb on a mobile phone is to tether it, and if you did no such thing then it clearly is a glitch.

Installing a torrent client on your phone will do it. Multiple exchange accounts will do it as well. My dad averaged about 100 GB/month on his data plan, and that was sheerly from constant exchange pushes from his corporate exchange account. My buddy was averaging 10-20 gigs/week from torrenting on his phone.
Lemme clear up a few things:
a) none of the reps I've spoken to, in any of the departments, expects me to be liable for and part of 41,000$; I have the unlimited data plan, the billing's a glitch. And isn't showing on my account, either; I owe 'em 0.00$, since I'm paid up for the past month.
b) this wasn't on a single weekend; I wish t-mob's service was capable of 500K/s =) It isn't. This was 81GB over the period of a month.
c) Capping: they do this, or rather, they do throttling; as you reach various 'milestones', they cap you to 50k/s. Mind you, it doesn't work; typically, after receiving a text msg that I'd been throttled, I'd still see speeds in excess of 100k/s. Cutting you off completely, should never be the answer.
d) What could account for that amount of useage: yes, tethering could do it; however, it can be done through other means as well. F'r'instance, 'newsrob', an offline newsreader: I have had it set in the past to 500 articles, full bore (not just newsfeed, but also full webpage + images), refresh every 30 minutes. With a decent stack of rss feeds, this can keep your bandwidth pegged constantly.
LOL. Hope the OP gets it taking care of.
I use tether heavily on my N1 account with TMO, but have never had any issues. Tethering to a notebook, etc. will definitely rack up data usage quickly
For example:

It's funny that TMO's website shows a "usage bar" for data when it's unlimited...

If I'm correct, AT&T I think does have a 5 GB cap.
Though if you're tethering, 81 GB seems a bit...light.

Looks like AT&T does actually:
AT&T Plan Terms
Oh and as for the OP "dragging down the network quality," that's clearly any service provider's fault for not realizing demand and possibly even throttling accordingly. That's the whole issue I have with data plans, but I won't go into that here.

No they aren't, if they we're throttled down to 50kbps reaching 80GB would be nearly impossible. That and I know for a fact that T-Mobile doesn't throttle for "certain". They clearly state that they MAY throttle you down and to get to 80GB you must be doing something against the TOS.

They clearly have stated that data plans for smartphones isn't limited. Regardless, they will notice it and we will all be reduced to tiered data plans that will probably be more expensive than what we pay now to make up on what they lose not charging a flat rate to people that use less.

So is there a limit on how much data can be used on the "unlimited" android plan? I did a google search and there was one article I found that said 1GB was the limit? is that true?.. I know Iphone has around 5GB "unlimited" data?
Anyone?
When the Dream (G1) came out they lifted the 1GB cap and now I believe there's a 5GB soft cap.
So I just did a t mobile chat
So I just did a t mobile chat and this is what i got;
rob: what is the "unlimited" data cap per month?
_Marion M: To provide a good experience for the majority of our customers and minimize capacity issues and degradation in network performance, we may take measures including temporarily reducing data throughput for a subset of customers who use a disproportionate amount of bandwidth; if your total usage exceeds 10GB (amount is subject to change; please periodically check T-Mobile.com for updates) during a billing cycle, we may reduce your data speed for the remainder of that billing cycle.
Like the response "rshemeld" got from his chat with Tmobile there is no cap to our Unlimited data plans like other providers may have.
We "Throttle Down" data transfer speeds after 10GB is exceeded during a bill cycle but there is still no overage charges (with all newer features). To this day I have talked to ONE person that has reached the 10GB throttling point during a bill cycle. On 3G network they were experiencing EDGE like speeds to give you an example of how much it is/can be throttled down.

I just moved over from Verizon where i was a customer for many years. I fell in love with TMOUS HTC HD2 Leo at first sight. I asked the tmobile rep if "unlimited" really meant unlimited and she said yes, i asked her if there was any asterisk subtext or any LIMITS/restriction to this plan - still she replied 'no', now I get a message from tmobile saying that I have gone over 10gb data and that they would be throttling my plan down to 50kbs for the remainder of this billing cycle!
I am considering returning the device and canceling due to being misled. I made the sales rep say 3 times "unlimited and without restriction" yet now I slow crawl the web!
Sales and z marketing have to stop using catch words that simply aren't true like "free", "unlimited" and "satisfaction guaranteed"!

It is unlimited. You didn't get to 10gb and then all of a sudden get shut off. You got restricted from full access, however you are still able to use 3g networks without any limit.
Sorry, but if you want to beat these reps, you have to use correct vocabulary. Why would they tell you data usage can be restricted if you don't ask while they're trying to sell you a phone and slam you into a contract? That's just bad business.
Also, 10gb is A LOT. Especially for simple web-browsing and app downloading. If you want to download a HUGE file, wait until you get wifi. It's faster anyways.
Oh, you're not going to be able to cancel without a heavy fee just because you claim to have been "mislead." I agree with you, the rep SHOULD have told you, but then they wouldn't have gotten a commission.
Im in Georgia, i have gone over 10gb and they have not said or charged me anything, i didnt see a change in speed anyways, so i would say UNLIMITED SPEED/DATA.

That's what you would say. However, it DOES get cut down, whether you say it does or doesn't. So, you are wrong.
Oh but I can cancel as I am brand newwith tmous. I have 14 days under new contact and can cancel 100% without any penalty.
while I didn't specifically mention 10gb as a number, I did ask her if d/l massive amounts of data are there ANY restrictions or penalties, to which shereplied, "no".
An equal analogy would be to rent a hotel room that comes with an included shower that suddenly reduces from spray to a drip 10 minutes into the shower. With soap in your eyes and hair, you'd be none too happy as well, but am I going to check out??
I gave her every opportunity to "fess up" with a disclaimer, I even asked her about restrictions or disclaimers but got no warnings. As this is a brand new device on a brand new network (to me anyway), I wanted to put it to the test - streaming music, videos, d/l apps etc. This will not be my typical monthly usage.
Why not call this the 10gb data plan rather than unlimited?
you must work in Sales or you would agree that todays marketing lingo is intentionally misleading - especially since you mentioned her commission.
Will I check out? Probably not, but it'll be probably 3 weeks or so until the shower works right again. I guess I just needed to rant and advise others what CAN happen...
I spend all day every day on my phone at work (lots and lots of downtime) and I've never come anywhere near 10GB. Tethering isnt technically legal, so if you're doing that, you have nothing to complain about since you're breaking the rules anyway.

Good, I would get out of a contract. They're no good.
10gb data plan would be misinterpreted by the common public. People would think they would ONLY get 10gb to use a month, and you'd be surprised how many people think 10gb is very little. Talking data usage on a cellphone, that's PLENTY with PLENTY to spare. I don't use HALF of that a month with constant internet usage. Also, many people would go run off to another cellphone company that says unlimited but cuts down download speed after 500mb of data usage. Its all in marketing. Besides, doesn't "unlimited data" plan sound better than "data plan where you use 10gb and then it gets cut down to half of your regular download speed but you'll still have access to data usage" plan?
Maybe the rep didn't know, maybe they were trying to make their commission. It is in the fine print somewhere, though.
Using tethering I've been getting to 10GB every month for about the last 4 or 5. They just lower your download speed to 50kb/s, although it still tells you you're at 3G speeds. Other than that though there is no "cap" where they cut your data plan altogether.
No, I was not tethered. I did however d/l lots of movie torrents via wmtorrent. Next time will use wifi when I can but I dont have as pc or wifi-I piggyback on unsecured, public nets.

How long did it take you to hit 10GB. That is a ton of data. I don't think this cap could ever effect me.
It looks like people are really taking advantage of the tethering function. 10GB is more than enough data for me too. I don't think I'll ever have the need to go over that in a month. Are people using their phones to d/l torrents or something?
Damn you went over 10gigs. I thought the cap was at 5gigs. I know sprints caps at 5. I love T-Mobile.

Aught to be able to login to your account at my.t-mobile.com and check usage to see the MB transferred.
Now does anyone know when you hit this threshold 5gb 10gb, whatever it is. does t mobile cut off your data completely or just throttle you? I've no problems with throttling down to edge, hell even gprs speeds would still let you send/recieve email, albeit slow as hell. but who cares the phone can do that in the background. it would suck for a heavy web browser though, but common if you're using that much data in a month i think you could use a little time out
I just hope t mobile doesn't follow the likes of what ATT and O2 just recently announced with the iphone4. no more unlimited data, u buy a fixed bucket of 1GB and every GB over that is $10 more. or if t mobile does go this route I hope those of us on current unlimited plans can stay grandfathered on them.
im on a $20 unlimited VPN plan that includes 200mms msgs. this 200mms is perfect for me, as most of the pics i send out are via email or twitter. ive never gone over that 200mms limit in the more than 2 or so years that ive had that plan, then I have a $10 unlimited txt addon. saves me the $5 of doing the unlimited txt/mms plan, and the smaller 1000 txt/mms bucket wouldn't work for me, as i easily go over 1000 txt in a month

Yeah but you know ATT is gona get ya when you want to upgrade to the iphone4 or setup new service for an ipad. Sorry your old data plan is not compatible. Just like TMO was forcing all is us into the $30 data plan to get the HD2 at upgrade pricing. I paid outright for my HD2 to keep my grandfathered data. over the course of 2 years the cheaper data plan will cover what i paid extra to buy it outright, and then after that i start saving money. im also still contract free, since I've been off contract with TMO for something like 2 years now.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking about, I just didn't know if he'd confirmed that the point they throttled him started at 10GB of use, or if he just assumed that was the point it happened based on what he had read about the cap.
I remember reading that the tmo terms state that going over the cap (which I thought was at 5-6GB) would result in throttling as opposed to a hard cutoff...but no extra charges unlike AT&T
Even with fairly regular daily useage (casual surfing, mostly during my bus commute) I've never gone over 1.2GB in a month.
I couldn't search on Tmobile's website about how much data I've used. But calculating I downloaded about 6 dvds 1.5GB+ each it should have sum to 10 gb. I couldn't use that much data on my cellphone alone of course ^^. I wanted to see for myself if there was really a 10 gb cap.
Speeds I am getting now are edge even when its on the 3g network.
They didn't warm me about getting to the 10 GB cap with messages only when i passed it. I don't see any charges for passing the 10GB cap either so we will see in a couple of days.

Yeah come to think of it I can only see my data usage totals after a billing cycle has closed out, not in the middle of one...but I've never tried calling them up to ask either.
Well that's fabulous news then, if they really wait 'till 10GB before throttling you! Just one more reason I'm glad I ended up with Tmo when I left AT&T 2 1/2 years ago
Tmobile Terms and Conditions - June 28,2008
It says a 5GB cap yet I've read they changed it to 10GB so its all good ^^

Yup, that's the one I remember reading...here's the important passage for anybody who doesn't feel like digging through all the fine print:
2. Protective Measures
To provide a good experience for the majority of our customers and minimize capacity issues and degradation in network performance, we may take measures including temporarily reducing data throughput for a subset of customers who use a disproportionate amount of bandwidth; if your total usage exceeds 5GB (amount is subject to change; please periodically check T-Mobile.com for updates) during a billing cycle, we may reduce your data speed for the remainder of that billing cycle. We may also suspend, terminate, or restrict your data session, Plan, or service if you use your Data Plan in a manner that interferes with other customers’ service, our ability to allocate network capacity among customers, or that otherwise may degrade service quality for other customers.

Thanks d0ug, I had gotten almost that far...I was just looking on the overview tab there (which doesn't show data totals), not the one for my individual line (I have a fam plan). I'd post what mine is now, but it's so rediculously low this month that I might get laughed right out of xda

lol, i got my HD 2 about a week before the billing cycle reset, with my old MDA i was averaging about 30-60mb a month. mainly email. In about a week i racked up 1.1gb of usage when i got the HD2, the newness has kinda worn off now i guess, so its back down to a more reasonable level
I originally just had a single line, but before the tmobile @home service was discontinued I had another line added for @home. Nothing had to change with my plan as far as it being a family plan, so maybe that's why it looks different.

This is why we can't have nice things. I'm on track to use like 3GB's this billing cycle, my highest usage yet.
Not sure if there really is a cap...
Well, i use my phone as my cellular modem roughly 6 days a week 12 pluss hours a day. I use it manly for email back and forth with my office, im a field mgr for an a/c company here in florida. Each day, of 15 hours on the road i will usually spend 12 of it constantly connected with my laptop doing the following;
3-4 hours browsing the web, reading the news or some occational youtube or hulu.
6+ hours streaming music to the truck
Occational downloading of software, rom images for the hd2 or my nexus
Some movie downloads (backups of course)
I have also downloaded one blu-ray copy which was 22.5 gigs total and i still have no speed restriction.
It might be diffrent in certan places but most of all my downloading is in areas that have the hspda+ network and it might not be controlled as much since its not "currently" available in my area yet.

Hey guys, like you, even though we have to manually do alot to get our HD2's in perfect condition. I wanted to hip you all to something that I'm currently taking advantage of, which is saving me major money each month.
Went to Wal-Mart on the lauch date of the infamous HD2, and paid full price for one, thinking that it would end up saving me money in the long run, because I had my own equiptment, therefore, I wasn't under a 2 year aggreement for T-Mobile.
Went to the T-Mobile store to get setup with service. Deciding on getting the T-Mobile unlimited everything plan (voice, sms, data) it ended up costing me around $92 a month (including taxes, fee's, and the $5 discount). So, I began thinking, "this is not the significant discount I was looking for". I asked the salesman what was the benefit of me purchasing this phone outright, he told me that if I got the same package and features, with the phone discount, under contract, it would cost me around $120-$130 a month. I began to seek other options to lower my bill. However, I was hesitant to lower anything, because I did one time, and got fuked over with crazy overage charges! I even thought about switching it over to AT&T, but then realized I'd be loosing out on the high speed data, because of the incompatibilities of the 3G radios between the 2 networks (and who wants edge speed on a smartphone these days!).
Then I did some research and found out about Simple Mobile, this is a Virtual carrier of T-Mobile (like how Virgin is to Verizon, and Boost is to Sprint). Anyway, after a couple of emails, and phone calls, I decided to make the switch. I found a nearby retailer (or u can check them out online) And I never looked back!
I now play EXACTLY $60 a month, for unlimited everything (voice, sms, data). And I was able to port and keep my same number. While this is truly great in of itself. Another great feature is because it's still a subsiary of T-Mobile, I didn't have to software unlock the HD2 at all. It was literally a matter of taking the old Sim card out and putting the new one in. The only thing that I did have to reconfig was the internet settings and the MMS settings to be able to have those 2 things function correctly. (which is very easy, I provided a link to the instructions below)
Instructions on changing internet settings and MMS settings.
http://www.mobile-files.us/showthread.php?2245-HD2-wap-mms-settings-for-SimpMo
The internet is exactly the same, I'm still getting the H icon at the top, with about 4 MB sec speeds. Call quality and range is the same, and so is the txting features. Because it's using the same T-Mobile towers as before. (which T-Mobile is very good, in Costa Mesa, CA )
Don't know about you all, but especially in these times, when money is tight, I have to really buckle down to budget and plan for big ticket items. So when I spend $400+ on a device. I truly want to be able to see more of the savings, in the long run. And thats how I cut my bill in half! They even offer plans at $30 and $40 if you don't want or need unlimited data for your phone, therefore saving your even more money.
This may not help some of you guys out there, but if your like me, and not in a contract, or you may be in a contract, and thinking this may be a better route for you in the long run (make sure you do your math beforehand, and make sure your savings outweigh your ETF from T-Mobile) I just wanted to let you know, that you do have an option out there.

Yes sir, I sure am, it displays the H icon, so I know its the HSDPA speed, which is alittle faster then 3G...however, i'm not sure if its the new HSDPA+ that you might have been hearing lately. I say that because, I dont believe WM have a status icon to show you that (because the technology is so new), so my theory is that, IF the HD2 supports it, AND its is getting the HSDPA+ signal, it'll still show the H icon at the top right of the device. But to answer your question, its DEFINITELY gets the high speed, because its still using the same towers!
I have friend that works in one of those smokes, cell, and gun stores and he has been trying to get me into this program.
It's good to go and legit.
Unfortunately I am only 6 months into my new 2 year contract...had to for my $190 Leo.

Both reported and the end of July of this year.... so unless something has changed in 3 months time, NO it is not unlimited.
I was suckered into a new mobile phone plan with a new company called Simple Mobile. They are a T-mobile MVNO (essentially a reseller) claiming to offer UNLIMITED talk, text, and data for $60/mo.
The reality is... Their $60 plan is NOT unlimited. When you hit 1000MB in one month your data service is simply terminated without warning.
They will offer to sell you an additional 100MB for $10. This policy is not stated anywhere on their website. If you call or write and complain, they will simply tell you to go elsewhere and will not provide any refund.

I mean really............. just think about it for a minute, do you really think T-Mobile is going to allow another company to use their network and infrastructure all the while having them undercut their own prices too.....not to mention the toll and expense of all pushing out all that bandwidth at "unlimited" rates.

All I can do , is speak from my experience. Since having this service, I KNOW that I used more than 1GB (stream music all day, watch YouTube, use it for general internet browsing, and logging into my Orb media server at home, and streaming TV from my PC). So I would definitely consider myself a above average data user, and have not once, been capped or throttled (trust, I would be *****ing and complaining, with everyone else). I've even checked my usage online to see it and its a little under 2Gigs of data transfer, and everything is ok. I not sure if maybe I have a magic bean, VIP, IMEI on my device (joke-e-joke ) , which is given unlimited data usage, without penalty, or maybe they've modified their contract and upped the data usage cap or something. Again, I can only speak from my personal experiences, within the last 3 months, reguarding my device and service. I don't use my phone for tethering, but I do consider myself a heavy data usage user and not had any problems regarding their quality of service thus far.
Get rid of the unlimited voice and txt, then with this guide I wrote:

You can cut your phone bill even more sharply. I'm paying about ~$20/month right now depending on my voice usage when out and about.
OK, I haven't posted in a while so here's a fairly basic tutorial for everyone and hopefully this thread can atleast spark some valuable ideas for everyone.
So we all have nexus ones here, and based on the unique sales strategy of the nexus, I would guess almost all of us have extra phones just laying around lol (I, for example, have a G1 that was basically just a paperweight).
What I did was sign up for an extra line with no contract (t-mobile), no data, no texts, and the minimum amount of minutes possible. This cost me an extra petty $30/month, obviously only a dollar a day which is nothing..
Advantages of this:
You now will be walking around with two phones like a boss lol.. Imagine walking into a restaurant/bar and when you empty your pockets and go to set down your phone, it's actually both phones. In my case, I actually use the other line as a business line, just call up your carrier and ask them to change the caller i.d. name to your business name. Your extra phone is basically a fully functional phone, just because you also have a nexus one. The wifi hotspot on our nexus is critical here. We now have internet, emails, and text (with gtalk? I'm not sure because I only text on my main line). You don't have to ever worry about a wifi because you will always have your main phone, the nexus, in your other pocket.
Disadvantages of this:
Nothing, besides paying an extra dollar a day lol

you can also use google voice and save those 30bucks.
or
you can upgrade your plan with those 30 bucks.

I guess I don't understand why someone would shell out an additional $30 a month to carry around two phones? The Nexus already makes calls and has data, why do you need another phone to do the same thing? To look like a boss? Instead of sharing internet to the second phone, why not just browse on your Nexus? What's the point of this thread? So many questions...
How high do I need to be to understand this thread?
I understand what he's saying, get a second voice line, and be a cheapskate about the data. but if you want to look like a true boss, you lay two iPhone 4's on the table. and you pay $100/month for each. not a N1 and G1. geez!
And I bet nobody calls you on your business phone. Just saying.

Anyway: a better alternative that *everyone should do*:
A) Use Google Voice for free texting.
B) Buy a Gizmo5 account for $10 on ebay and set up free VoiP (works on 3G and Wifi), and tie it to your Google Voice number. This gives you unlimited minutes so you can downgrade your plan to the lowest amount.
The entire process takes about 10 minutes to set-up. I did it last week; it's very easy and works extremely well.

Yea this is what i have setup. I pay $25 a month each for 4 N1s on a family 1500 min even more plus plan (no contract) and $10 web2go data, blocked texting (use only google voice). If you just need a single line you can get a 500 minute plan for $29.99 and add the $10 web2go unlimited web for a total of $39.99 a month and no contract. All you have to do is change APN settings. This plan will expire before november 3, so those interested should jump on it today
Since the WiFi only XOOM has been officially announced, I just requested my return label from AmazonWireless. I would just like to thank Motorola for doing the smart thing and releasing the WiFi only version in a timely manner. I never had service with Verizon and didn't plane to since I have a Perfect condition Nexus One with unlimited AT&T data. It's a shame that Verizon forced Motorola into that ridiculous price point for a new/unproven product. Don't get me wrong I love my XOOM and thought the $799 price was some what justified, but now that the WiFi only version is about to be available for $599.99 I don't think the Verizon XOOM will sell very well. Also I completely understand that some users want/need built in 3G/4G and more power to you, but I would definitely tell you to consider a WiFi XOOM with a MiFi or a Smart phone with wifi tethering if your trying to save some bucks. Well I guess my little diary entry is over.
P.S. I think it's funny how over the past 2-3 weeks all the post where like "I'm returning this POS XOOM it cost to much and I didn't want data and when I want to look a 5 HD porn streams it freezes and I can't play my MKV movies on it but my iPad plays them in 1080p just fine sarcasm and it doesn't have flash and I need the Micro SD card to work now!" - To these people I say "F*CK OFF!"

First of all, let me say that it's more difficult for me to agree with you since I got $100 price matched off my purchase and used $465 in gift cards to begin with when I bought mine. That said, I have to ask you if it's really worth a couple hundred bucks to lose out on the ability to pull up 3g/4g down the road if the need arose? I have been in 3 specific situations to date that had me out in the boonies and when the AT&T network was in the can the Verizon network saved my bacon. I live and work in the greater Houston area and there are a few places where service is spotty.
I think Verizon will ultimately remove their head from their rear end and kill activation fees alltogether, and being able to sign up for 3g in a pinch and then use it for a few days and turn it off effectively costing you at most 30 bucks would be something I think I would greatly regret.
Just my opinion
Oh I have to mention that I too own a Google Nexus one on the AT&T network, and quite often I am a walking hotspot

If I thought we could rely on Verizon to do this, I'd keep my 3G/4G version as well. We can't today, however, and we have no idea if they will, and so I'm returning my 3G and getting a wifi-only as well. I'll use the $200 (or $250 if the Sam's Club rumor holds true) to pay for 3G/4G as I need it--on-demand--via my Sprint Epic hotspot.
FYI, no, I'm not into rooting, and so I'm not going to go that route to get tethering for free. I'd love to see someone like PDAnet, though, make a solution that will work with the Xoom.

I went to Best Buy during the sweet period of time that a promotional coupon worked online, and talked a floor manager into allowing the price match after showing him the checkout process up to the point of entering the coupon. It was iffy, but in the end he did it. To me, that was the right move because I try to show loyalty even to big box stores in my area. My brother works for Best Buy in another location so I feel good about buying there for that reason too.
In response to the OP, that's really a good enough solution for you then I guess... the nexus one does wifi hotspot without any root required btw.
I for one got nailed with the 35 dollar activation and once again with a little sugar and honey (and persistance) was able to get that credited off my 1st bill.
3G is a must for me. Even if im paying $600 for a mobile device...damn well better have internet/email access when im not on wifi.
Now, some will say they will just tether to there unlimited Android phone. But come on...that gets old, kills your battery, drops in and out, kinda slow..etc. So no thanks.

the up front cost is minuscule when compared to $20 a month for only 1gb of data.... but yes I agree the 3G shouldn't be an up-front premium of $200 just to enable the connection.

But if you're as connected as I'm gonna assume most folks around here are, that's the perfect plan for the few times you don't have WiFi; I've got 10 days left on my month and have used about 300MB.
Yea I'm picking up the xoom wifi on day one here. I already have a sprint 4g overdrive mifi so with unlimited data and aan att nexus one too so in certainly nit gonna pay verizon for data on top of that. I currently have a sprint galaxy tab and I just use the mifi to get data on it when I'm not on home or work wireless.

Sure. Different people have different usage. But if I'm using 2gb+ per month on my phone, there's no way I can stay under 1gb on my tablet.

Interesting. I (used to) use my EVO for everything (web, calendar, E-mail on two accounts, updates, etc.), and I checked my usage with Sprint before signing onto a VZ data plan to see about what I was using for that, and most I'd ever run up was ~450MB.

Wow. I don't understand how you use that little data lol. I easily use 2gb-3gb a month.
This is my data usage for my Nexus One on AT&T. I didn't even have a smartphone for like the first 5 months on the chart. Even the 4GB month I had a Samsung Impression with unlimited internet for $10 a month.
