Buyers in UK, Did you get VAT bill? - Nexus One General

it's now been almost 3 months since the Nexus One was released now.
Buyers in the UK, did you get a VAT bill from DHL, or did you get away with it?

Got VAT bill 2/3 weeks after the phone.

There's no import duty on mobile phones. Just the 17.5% vat.

i have not seen one yet, and its been 3 months, surely i would have received one by now.

That's what the poll is about... if you got a VAT bill...

I got a VAT bill 4 weeks later for £61.48

Mine originally got charged to work. Still awaiting a personal invoice through (assuming it gets sorted properly) still expecting to pay one in the near future though.

So did mine, had to phone up and winge as they tried to charge me the commercial admin fee, fair play they sorted out a credit pretty quick.

business' dont pay vat on phones to avoid fraud. consumers who go over the personal import levy with customs and excise then have to pay vat as its coming from outsde europe.
if you didnt get one say nowt!!

I got one few weeks after purchase for around £60.

Nearly 2 months here and I got mine a few days ago. I'm moving out of this house in a couple weeks, any harm in not paying?

Apart from tax evasion i think you should be fine

The first bill DHL sent me they charged me 5% import duty on top of the VAT, so I called them up to have the bill corrected and send me a revised bill. That was a month ago. I have yet to receive my revised bill. So until my new updated bill arrives I ain't gonna pay DHL a single penny.

If you've had a bill and don't pay, DHL will just pass your details on to a recovery agency who will charge you more, take you to court and damage your credit rating. Not really worth it.
If you are still yet to get one and you had it dispatched to work there is a chance your company will have received the bill as DHL will send it to the "account holder" at that address if one is on file. Now your company may have kindly paid it for you, or the paperwork is moving around in circles as no one has any idea why a VAT bill would have been sent to them.

Got my tax bill 3 weeks after delivery for the N1, sent to work address.
About 2 weeks after delivery for desktop dock 1, sent to work address.
Still waiting on the one for desktop dock 2 (sent to home address, ordered at same time as 1).
You really don't want to try and avoid paying if billed - UK Customs and Excise have an awful long memory and a lot of power (rights of entry to property, opening mail to address, etc etc).

Been 3 months now and not received it yet.
We move on 16th April to anew address so I'm not sure how it will stand if it gets sent to the old address.

You could always inform DHL that you're moving.
I had to pay the VAT before they'd deliver my N1, then the confirmation was going to take so long it would take an extra day to deliver, so I went and collected it from DHL's depot at the airport.

A couple of years back I imported some stuff and DHL charged me VAT for it, which I forgot about. They send you a reminder bill (a red bill) a month later if you don't pay. So it's not like they don't give you a chance before passing it on to the debt/bailiff department.

Uk buyers YOU WILL get a VAT invoice

I know there is another thread on this and in it i said that if the box isnt opened you wont get a bill. Well that is wrong.
I know now different from lots of sites ive read.
I have had my Nexus One 3 weeks and only just got my bill!
The worst thing is i bought my phone from ebay because the guy said he would send it as a gift. He sent it direct from Google the T**T.
So not only did i pay over the odds i now get a vat bill, plus i oredered a dock the other day thinking i wont have to pay tax on that!!!
Yup, this is correct, my invoice from DHL arrived over the weekend.
I ordered my Nexus One on the 8th of January (from Google).
Whats the damage on the import/VAT bill for you guys? How long (roughly) is it taking for the N1 to arrive after ordering?
Cheers
£60ish, took about a week for my N1 to arrive.
£61.40

first of all why would you buy from ebay, when you can buy direct from google? ebay's just not worth the hassle and risk, and even more so going through a middle man when you need a receipt/warranty replacement. I very doubt you paid less than I did buying direct from Google. So there is no reason to buy from ebay unless you tried to skip the VAT, which IMO WILL be added obviously if the guy is selling the device for so cheap. If it wasnt cheap then no reason to not get it from google.
as for the box unopened - you wont recieve a bill for VAT.... i never knew Google put a spy inside the box.
I've had my device now for almost a month. Still no sign of invoice so heres hoping.

I bought from ebay as it cost me £390 delivered.
Now if he had sent it as a gift like he said i would have saved on paying the VAT. Thats the only reason i got it from ebay.
My warranty is still covered as i have had to send it away for repair for the dust under screen issue.
The part about the box was intended for an earlier post where someone said if the box wasnt opened you wouldnt get a bill, he was wrong.
I've had mine for a month now. I haven't had the VAT invoice yet, but I always knew it was coming. The whole "depends on whether the box is opened or not" is BS. DHL do a declaration for each unit based on the info from google. The only way you wouldn't get an invoice is if DHL stuff up and don't send one - but that is not likely.

If you want to avoid it you can use a US based company where you pay them and they send it as a gift, theres a thread on here somewhere cant find it now,.

Well it's too late now, the DHL invoice is right on my table. I've been charged 5% duty on top of the VAT which is why I'm asking in the first place.
The DHL helpline was too busy so I'll try calling again on monday. If I can't get through I'll pull a lolittle and wait for them to call me instead. There is no way I am paying an extra 5% (about £18) on top of the VAT (£60, so totalling £78) to the greedy taxman.

Got mine four weeks after the phone was delivered.
Got mine on the 8th Feb. Not got tax yet.
Curious if DHL do open all packages or does some slip through customs.
Been reading threads on other boards about this and what appears to happen is Customs opened them, DHL pays the VAT so you can get the item, and then you are billed for the VAT on DHL's behalf and are required to pay it.
Consensus seems to show that it takes 3-4 weeks (maybe more) to get your VAT bill, but it will happen.
i got my nexus one 6 days after it came out. still no vat
now that ive said this though...mayb ill get a letter on monday lol. but for now, i have nearly doubled the '3-4weeks' timeline.

I thought most people were getting a separate invoice *after* delivery of the phone, but when I ordered I had tracked the parcel to East Midlands Airport, then wondered why it didn't go out on a van for delivery ... I found out when I received a phone call (from a company called Sutherlands rather than DHL themselves) asking for the VAT payment upfront, then they'd arrange delivery next day ... I paid but mentioned I was a bit annoyed they had done it that way round, they said collection was not possible.
I phoned DHL direct and asked if I could collect it, they said Sutherlands generally didn't send through payment confirmation for several hours and they wouldn't release it until they had, I gave them the payment reference for them to chase up.
As it happened I was travelling past East Midlands Airport anyway, so I popped in, explained and they they were fairly decent about it, checked the parcel number, and payment number and fetched my N1 from round the back.
£65.03 for an N1 + UK charger + desktop dock
I phoned DHL while my parcel was still over in the US and the customer service section already know that I would have to pay £60 VAT on it before it had even arrived in the UK. I can only assume then that google must make a declaration as to the value of the goods before they ship
Bought on 18th Feb, received a bill for £58 this morning.

You aren't a hero you know. This is simply VAT. Every (non-basic) product sold in this country is subject to it and anything imported is also subject to it. By not paying you are evading tax. That, my friend, is a serious crime and you aren't gonna somehow convince them to just 'let you off'
Just pay it now and save yourself a lot of bother/further expense later.

also - they just treat vat invoices like any other - if it is not paid, then it goes to a debt recovery agent and you end up paying more

Nexus One shipped to the UK.

Has anyone on this forum had a nexus one sent to the UK? I am very interested in buying one. How much did it cost with and without the optional UK charger. I am getting it sent tot he north east. Also how long did it take? Also if anyone on this forum came from an iPhone 3GS how did the battery life compare?

Ordered ~ 3pm on Wednesday, it arrived at ~ 9am Friday morning. Ordered early-mid Feb ~ 10th iirc.
374 was charged to credit card (didn't get the UK charger) but yet to have a form through for import from DHL.
Wouldn't bother with the extra charger tbh, they can be picked up cheap enough in the UK.
As above. Mine cost me £373 (phone inc delivery) and my bank charged me £10 for the conversion - total: £383. I ordered it around teatime last Wednesday and it was delivered this Monday. Not got the vat bill in yet.
Didn't get the charger as it was $19.99 + uk vat. I got one for the HD2, from amazon, at £4.95 with free delivery.
Mine (without rip off charger) cost £412 including taxes.
Ordered on a Tuesday eve, received on the Friday.

Yep ordered on a Sunday night, delivered to my work address (about 1.5 hours north of London) Weds lunchtime, cost £384.81 with charger, no tax bill yet.
Battery life compares well with iPhone 3G, Magic, G1, better than Palm Pre with 1400 extended battery. I am planning on getting the dock when it comes to UK stockists for when I'm deskbound at work (I listen to music most of the day), but I've always done so regardless of phone.
Works well on O2 too.
Mine also came at around £410 including VAT. DHL will charge you separately for the VAT, but the bill won't arrive until about a month later. You might get lucky and DHL might not send you the bill, but I'd set aside the money as it seems the very first UK buyers at release were mainly the ones that got away with the VAT.
Even with the VAT inclusive, totalling £410 it's still alot cheaper than buying from expansys.com which is going for £599 as of today with 7 in stock according to the website.
Edit: You could wait another month and get it on contract with Vodafone if you don't want to pay for it unsubsidied. Or preorder the Desire instead on expansys for £439
ordered mine on a Sunday evening, the phone arrived the following Friday morning as it was slightly delayed at customs.
At the time I paid $577 which worked out to be £386 for the phone including UK charger and delivery charge.
I finally recieved the VAT bill this morning quoted at £60.17.
So all in all toatal costs = £446.17
Lol, YMMV...
I ordered two from the US, first never shipped, PayPal refund (direct from seller) after 11 days. Ordered second (different seller) and an empty box arrived three weeks later (express shipping). I believe it was stolen at customs. Under insurance claim.
Third time I just ordered it from a UK seller, +£50 but I got it in three days, no VAT letters to worry about and no customs delays to concern me.
I wish you all better luck than me. Every attempt I made was with an eBay "Power Seller" with good (recent) feedback for the same product.
So you paid £50 more, and it took 3 days to arrive? Might just as well have bought it from Google
There are no customs delays, DHL take it straight through and invoice you for it a few weeks later. At least that way you get a warranty.
@Rusty!:
I'm not sure I understand your point. Google weren't selling it directly outside of the US when I got mine. Or did you mean something else?
There's no way I would have received it from the US in three days anyway, customs or otherwise.
I have a guarantee, direct with HTC for 12 months.

Since this is a 'shipping to the UK' thread, I have assumed you are in the UK. To address your points/clarify what I meant:
Point 1: Google have shipped to the UK since day of release, so dunno what you're on about.
Point 2: I ordered mine late Tuesday, and received it Friday. I think it's fair to count that as 3 days.
Point 3: No you don't I'm afraid. Read the warranty statement, it's first point is that the warranty is non-transferable. HTC already know which Google account ordered the phone, and it wasn't yours.
So what I am saying is you would have been better off in pretty much every way ordering from Google. Still, doesn't matter now can't undo it... both worth mentioning to make sure others get the best deal.
Thanks for the clarification guys, although I wasn't seeking the criticism you so quickly offered!
I'm (ultimately) happy with the course of action I took and the price I paid.
I don't wish to start a debate but you're wrong on the warranty; under law warranty transferability doesn't apply to the retailer/end user relationship, only to end user/end user relationships. As such, the first end user of the device has a 12 month HTC warranty, they can not transfer this warranty.
The retailer doesn't even need to be sanctioned or official as long as they selling original, unmodified goods.

I think I agree (but don't know consumer law well enough..and am no lawyer)
Certainly in Scotland (where I am domiciled) any consumer matter (which a Nexus problem would be) can be handled by the local Sheriff Court if the consumer so desires.
Just because there are clauses in Google's contract doesn't make them right.
Ultimately it will be for a court/judge to decide what the situation.,,
However I'm sure Google & HTC will behave if a professional, competent & legal manner at all times and things would never need to get that far: Aye, right!! (2 positives making a negative..)
Cheers!

Buyers in US who bought from Handtec?

If you bought this phone from Handtec, did it come with UK firmware? Did you pay any customs tax to Fed Ex? How long in average it took from the day of order to the final delivery to US. ( especially west coast) Is your phone Made in Korea?
Thank you for answers
I had bought my Touch HD from them back in 2008 through google checkout. They shipped the same day and arrived in 5 days (or less) to Washington DC. Fedex dropped it to my door. No customs problems, but some legal papers concerning US vs EU thingies with it, which I threw to trash... but again I have read some incidents with customs... maybe it was my luck. Good luck with you. Decent company

Yes, No, 1 day to New York, Yes.

I ordered mine yesterday, it shipped today, and it's scheduled to be delivered to my door tomorrow before 10:30am. I received a call from FedEx today; they said something about the customs paperwork listing electronics and asked what it was. I said a cell phone and the woman said something about the FCC, then "Let me speak with my supervisor and see if this paperwork will suffice." She came back and said her supervisor gave the ok and thanks.
I'll report tomorrow if anything unpleasant happens with my order, such as it not arriving promptly and satisfying my cravings!
Argh! I just checked the FedEx tracking for my Note and it says customs delay! It says "Description provided is insufficient to classify commodity." I hope the earlier call where they asked me what it was is all that's needed and this clearance delay will not change tomorrow's delivery. But the red color of the status bar at the top of the FedEx tracking page is rather ominous...

Ordered mine Friday Nov 3rd. Got it Nov 9th at 10am fedex (weekend in there, so it didn't ship until 7th). No customs problems or delays. No extra taxes or charges. I am in California.
This customs issue is very frustrating. They called and said the FCC form is incomplete. They sent me one to fill out since Handtec is gone for the day and I'm clueless on some of the items on it. I started a new thread with the contents of the form posted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19234692#post19234692

My phone was supposed to be here this morning but held up by customs because of improper address in the manufacturer box. My son already received his without this. I guess it depends on the customs agent. I called handtech and told him they needed to fill in the complete Samsung UK address in that box. Said they would but still seem to think that customs stops some phones just for general principles. Just received e-mail from FedEx saying the package will be here tomorrow between 10:30 and 12

$449 it's actually around $611 The phone is unlocked with no AT&T crap on it. Also has a hardware button which is great as far as I'm concerned. When you figure AT&T will be charging $300 for it, it becomes a bargain. Very nice to have a phone that if you're in Europe you can just throw in a Sim card and use it to your hearts extent without those exorbitant AT&T charges. I can also have it right away and not have to wait six months.

Thanks, this thinking started when I got a $500 bill from my Spain trip. That'll never happen again, there's so many pluses to buying a phone that's it's hard not to.

$449 it's actually around $611

Am I figuring this out wrong? To figure the price in US$ for with the £/US$ conversion isn't it roughly 1.6 x £449 = $718 plus shipping on top of that? Did you pay just $611? Thanks
I paid for 449.99 + 14.99 EU's for overnight shipping FedEx, turned out to be two overnights because of our ultra efficient customs department. Let me get out my trusty converter, that's $632. Subtract $300 I would've paid AT&T for contract and about $200 for my old iPhone 3GS equals $135 for the Samsung Note and can get dump AT&T any time I want = priceless

Does Google Play include Saturday delivery?

UPS 2nd Day Air has an option for saturday deliveries, it may or may not be extra, I know Amazon Prime does it and they use UPS 2 day.
Anyone know if UPS included saturday delivery with all 2 day orders now? Their website makes it seem like its an add-on charge but they dont explicitly say it is.
If it isnt included in all 2 day shipping then does anyone know if Play uses saturday delivery?
Someone please say yes...
usually during holiday season all 2nd day shipping has the saturday option, so possibly. however, i doubt it.

No but others in the nexus 7 forums did and they didn't get it till monday
The answer is no.
UPS charges $15 for Saturday delivery which is more than twice the cost Google charged to deliver the package.
Google really screwed us on this one >=(

From past experience.
And I called Google and UPS for a Saturday delivery and both rejected. I had to leave town on Monday so I was hoping they would deliver on Saturday.but they wouldn't. I'm sure others had same experience as well.

Well they charged $14, which is a completely ridiculous price in the first place. Amazon gives you saturday delivery for a fraction of that (or included with Prime).
I cant believe they are going to ship on thursday and not include saturday delivery. This is absolute incompetence. 6 day shipping for $14... un f***ing believable.
They should be busting their asses to get these things shipping tonight if they are going to charge that much and not do saturday delivery. Whose dumbass idea was it to ship on the day that would take longest possible shipping time?

What did google do?
This is getting annoying. "Google screwed us when we were ordering" "Google screwed us when shipping" "Google screwed us with packaging" "google screwed us with 30 units available"
Google didn't screw anyone. The only thing that close was the ordering system. They should have had a pre order.
Shipping. Do you think its easy to ship out probably 10 000 units in 2 days? Shipping is UPS side. Google has nothing to do with shipping. If you want it so bad. Get it from TMO or any place that sells it retail. That way you have it in your hands the second you pay for it.
This is why we can't have nice things. People complains and points fingers when nothing is wrong. Just because they are excited.
You waited for least 2 weeks now. Another week isn't going to ruin your life.

Well there you go, a simple pre order would of been enough to help us out and Google didn't do that so yes they screwed us on this one. At least they should have the common decency to give us Saturday shipping or have it listed as an option. But i understand that maybe UPS fault? But still not even preorders were offered .
10,000 units in 2days is trouble some to ship, but from what i have heard, no ones N4 has been shipped yet not even one. (at least in the U.S)
So I stand by my last post :]

$14 for shipping is cheap. Move to canada.
Anything you buy from the states is almost least $20 for 2 weeks delivery time. That's for something that weights a pound. I paid $100 to ship a turbo over from the states to canada. That took 2 weeks. It cost a dealer about $1500 to ship a car. And i'm paying $100 to ship a turbo that weights maybe 15lbs. Both takes about the same time to deliver. That's ridiculous.
Just because companies spoils you with free shipping doesn't mean its ridiculous for another to charge. N4 is stupid cheap as it is. Just be wait.
Unless you are willing to ship something for free and with saturday delivery, don't complain.
It depends to be honest. If you need it sat, my suggestion is to track it. If the phone is in a local distribution center, call them and arrange a pick up

yeah I agree they should have had an option for saturday but think about it from google's POV.
They have a ton of unit to ship and mistakes will happen if they don't keep things simple.
Google isn't a hardware complain, They are a search engine, advertising and software company. So they could only have 100 warehouse workers trying to get everything out vs apple with 1000 (made up number) so its easier for them and have lessen the chance of a mistake. Or shipping the saturday ones with regular shipping times.
Who compares shipping to Amazon? Seriously. Amazon sends a million shipments a day. They have their own carrier distribution facilities. Amazon is in a league of their own with shipping so don't expect other companies to live up to their level.

So because you pay international shipping rates it makes sense to charge international rates for domestic shipping as well? If anything that makes the shipping price even more absurd.
Stop acting like Google is some mom and pop company, they are one of the richest companies in the world and have been shipping phones out of Play for the past year with multiple warehouses, they do not pay full price for shipping like we do because they ship thousands of products a month and get bulk discounts like every other retailer. Ive gotten far better and cheaper service from Ebay stores than I have from Play, and they have to pay full price for shipping.
The poor service would be much easier to swallow if they didnt charge far more in shipping than any other retailer on the internet.
