sorry, i asked something similar, but htc has a triage fee for when you send in your phone, and if its not covered they charge you money. i want to know to make sure, what would they actually say is not covered by their warranty for te g1. im having a software problem, but im scared they're going to say something like i dropped it, and thats what messed up the phone. they wouldnt do anything like that would they?

As far as I know, improper use of your phone (Dropping it, throwing it etc.), water damage, and things caused by third party firmware (i.e. brick from flashing an spl) are the only things not covered.... and one of them you can play stupid about (Though this is not the best way, and doesn't always work).
o yes, but i mean, they cant possibly know if you dropped it, unless theres like a dent in it right

Technically, I guess not. But really what are you dropping it on that it would damage the functionality without damaging the hardware too?
nothing, i just want to make sure they wont say that there has been damage done to it, when theres absolutley no way you could tell if it was dropped or something since everything looks just like its new

Yes. I'm looking for a way to mess up my phone software so I can use my insurance to get a new phone. Is there. An way?
I bricked mine once by flashing a gsm radio.. =(
but if that's what you want, then go ahead!
good luck, sprint isn't that smart. tell them you tried updating my prl and it shut off. that's what i did!
why dont you just say you lost it or throw it in the toilet?

this wouldn't get you a free phone, you'd have to pay a $100 deductible... you should be careful when making posts like this. Some people are really sensitive about cheating the system and will torch you. Having said that, I would flash a gsm radio like the second post said.

if ur paying for insurance then why don't u just brick it the easy way nd drop an actual brick on it... last i checked monthly insurance covered any cause for replacement even neglect
My first inclination is to flame you, because the day before my phone got stolen, Sprint raised their deductable from $50 to $100 because of people doing things like that. It sucked.
But with that said, if you still feel like being "that guy" just flash a gsm radio

i know, that's why i told him to do it your way rather than claiming loss or dropping it down the toilet
ummm...run the RUU then uplug the device as it is flashing? you ever hear of insurance fraud my man?
Why do you need a new phone? If there is a defect, such as dust under the screen or paint chipping, call up customer service. They'll send you another one. If you REALLY needed to brick it, I would flash a Nexus kernel and radio. If you flash BOTH, that's the point of no return.

You could use flash_image to overwrite the nand with 0xFF's. Or my personal favorite, nuke it for 2 seconds in the microwave. I happen to be one of few people who has heard what it sounds like to be connected to a phone being nuked. You hear a thud, a couple beeps, a loud buzzing and a click...
Granted that guy took me seriously. But in general you should always try to call customer service or take it to a sprint store and argue for a replacement. If you waste enough of their time they will do it for you without your needing to destroy hardware and raise prices for the rest of us.
Use fresh ruu 1.56 sprint stock and unplugged bfre it finishes...anyways u might get the error 110 like me....
Yea because flashing a gsm radio isnt cheating the system. An insurance claim you pay for which is what he said he didnt say under warranty.
Ok, Im sending my phone in for chipped paint guys... Now tell me..
I run a mac, and am on fresh 2.0d
Before sending it in should I brick it using the GSM radio thing so they dont know im rooted.
Because i don't know how to unroot on a mac.
EDIT: Also on my new phone, can i use my existing nandroid backups?
Just run the stock RUU it does it by itself. It gets rid of root and it also may brick your phone which you dont care. I do not know if it works on mac tho.

You are the reason people like me have to pay high premiums. Is anyone honest anymore? You guys who do this crap piss me off!
You have high premiums because you have a high cost device. The cost is 100 for high end devices if you had a regular phone it would still be 50.

Relax brotha everybody does it..one way or the other ..am sure u have done it. Maybe not with cell phones.......
I might get burned for saying this..but its my opinion...
Yesterday afternoon the trackball on my N1 stopped working. it'll scroll everywhere but left. Nothing obviously wrong with it, just wont go. thought i'd give it a minute, push and play with it, see if something gives, but no dice. This morning I called HTC, no questions about bootloader which should not affect a hardware issue anyway. Having a replacement sent today.
Now I'll send this phone back, and they will assumably examine and test it. I would agree with any non-hardware issues being rejected due to unlocked bootloader, however if they contact me and say they will not cover the trackball because of this, I will bite the bullet and pay for the repair or replacement, and won't even be pissy about it. I'm just curious what HTC will do, being as this is obviously a hardware issue which unlocking cannot affect.
Seems 50/50 whether they will cover it or not really.
i had a h/w issue and an unlocked bootloader and they still charged me $55 for a replacement
good luck
As of yesterday my trackball has started being annoying, has trouble scrolling downwards, though is not completely broken. I am reluctant to do an exchange, because mine is a special import and has an unlocked bootloader.
Do you have the number for US HTC anyway?

How long did you have the phone before it got to this point? Also were you careful with the phone or (trying to find the words) a little wreckless? Just curious..

no just curious because I myself am looking into buying this phone. I don't want to repeat someone else's mistakes (if there are any mistakes at all). Not related to this but i've heard plenty of times where someone has said "if I was a little more careful, this wouldn't have happend". I'm trying to find a bunch of those situations so I don't fall for them. Thats it..

I can't help but wonder if me using "trackball wakeup" has contributed to this, I hope not, because it is damn handy to use.

i have that as well on cyanogen 506. honestly it should be fine.
if it sticks, clean the ball with a very miniscule amount of alcohol, it'll break the dirt down and youll be good to go. or just dont think about it everytime you touch it (i used to be that way and now im better off. ha)
oh and a friendly tip.
EVERYTIME you're done using the TB, WIPE IT ON YOUR SHIRT or something cloth. thats the best way to clean it. up and down on your shirt. side to side even too

Needless to say I think i've heard every problem you could possibly have with this phone happen. From the screen cracking from a 1 foot drop to the camera app not working, to this post. However, I'm going with the n1 anyway. I'm sure that for every bad nexus one, theres 1,999 good ones. Anyway the only thing I need help with is finding a good case that will prevent damage because I have been known for dropping my phone alot.
My friends have told me to go with the "seidio innocase II" and others have said get a crystal silicone case. What do you recommend?

but really the neoprene case is just enough for me because i like the naked look and feel of the phone. plus the case was free!

I've had it since release. I ordered it about 30 minutes after the google.com/phone site was up and running. I am always careful with my devices, and use cases and protectors. My phone has never been dropped or mishandled. By way of example, I also got my G1 on release day, and when i got my nexus I was able to sell it on Ebay for $250 with a review about the immaculate condition of the phone he had received. He said it looked like it just came out of the original box.
I hold babies with less precision and attention.
Easy fix
I had the same problem but mine wouldn't scroll down. After getting the run-around on the phone from HTC, I tried to fix it myself. It took less than 10 seconds.
Just grab the ball using your finger nails or something similar, and twist the ball a little bit. it'll loosen up built up dirt and oil on the sensors, and viola! You should be able to scroll again. If not, then you need a replacement.

You know, I would try this if the replacement hadn't been delivered to my doorstep like 5 minutes ago. Downside = I suppose I will need to run stock for a few weeks in case they refuse to accept the return because of the bootloader. Will make me appreciate devs all the more.
UPDATE: AAARRRGGGHHHHHHH!!!!! I AM RESTORING MY BEAUTIFUL PHONE TO STOCK STATE! OMFGPLSGODWHYISTHISHAPPENINGTOME! WILL BE RUNNING STOCK FOR A WEEK OR SO AFTER. HUGE CAN OF SUCK.
Update: okay, so this isn't that bad. Sigh.
OK I understand if I root my phone I void my warranty. Its our phone It does no harm in rooting our cell phones especially if its not against the law. so anyways I can undo anything that I did to the phone. So as long as the phone still turns on I can undo everything to get it warrantbut lets say the phone breaks. bad mother board and the phone wont turn on. could they find out my phones been hacked and deny my warranty.
its one thing that breaking the phone do to your negligence but its another when something breaks and its not your fault. something that would have broke if it was not your fault. If Its my fault then I would man up and deal with my mistakes.

if its a mobo problem and it wont turn on, no way to find out it was rooted unless they got it to turn back on.
Now i am also in that circle of digitizer problem. I bought as second hand and without warranty. So i have to pay 150$ for repairing.
But real question is is the problem persist even after that replacement. Is is knocking your door again.Id yes them i have to think for selling it out as soon as it become alive again. But is not it a foolish act. After wasting my that much of money. Should i keep the phone. Is it safe. Please need very honest opinion
As long as they repair it properly and don't damage anything else in the process, it should be okay for a long time. I've had my HD2 for a year, and nothing has gone wrong with it (besides a busted USB port, my fault) despite plenty of abuse, being dropped many times, flashing many ROMs, etc.
When they replace the digitizer, you might wanna make sure they replace the screen too, and make sure they replace it with the Sharp panel, not the AOU one, as the AOU ones create wakeup lag problems, especially in Android.

Mine just had the same problem after 1 year. Called them and it's still under warranty. Sent in today and hope I won't get any "well, you had software on it that doesn't belong there" crap, though all that was on there was the CHT editor or whatever that was called, never tried anything else.
I only had problems after replacing my cracked digitizer with a defective Chinese clone digitizer >.>
@ Krauti25: CHT Editor is just an ugraded interface, kind of like SPB shell or something like that. If you didn't flash a custom rom, you should be fine.
Hey Guys, My hd2's touchscreen stopped working a couple of weeks ago so i sent it in Thursday to htc under warranty. I called them today and they're saying they have to charge me $120 to repair it because its my fault it stopped working. I do have a crack next to the call button, could this be why? Also Is there any way that i can get it repaired under warranty instead of paying $120?
Sounds like you did something to cause enough force to get it to stop working, if it's cracked anywhere that usually means you dropped it.
I'd get the phone back, then find a 3rd party store that repairs screens for like $50 or something like that.

After you dropped it it may have damaged it but not to the point of not working, then maybe you bumped it wrong or something and it somehow messed up the digitizer. Either way, it def. sounds like a hardware issue at this point and since HTC knows you dropped it they will refuse to fix it for free.
3rd party is always cheaper than HTC, so you gotta do what you gotta do.

Alright thanks a lot man, I'll look in to getting it fixed sometime next week. Do you think its worth getting fixed since its a hardware issue with the digitizer being located under the end key? Wouldn't the same thing happen eventually?
