I got a HD2, replacing a Hero last month and am VERY excited about the Evo.
I can't seem to find a mention of Australia anywhere, I saw that the UK was apparently missing out as they don't have a 4G network but Vivid Wireless has just been launched in Perth here in Australia running a 4G Network and is currently on its way to coming online in other major cities.
So what do you think?
Will the Evo be coming to Australia?
I will end up importing one if it doesn't but I'd rather not have the Sprint branding (I'm that much of a purist)
if u import it how are u gonna use it? coz i thought it doesnt use sim card (correct me if im wrong)

The EVO runs on the 4g network at Sprint. Perth is the only city that has a 4g network AFAIK (vividwireless.com.au), but its not linked to a cellular network in any way so a phone on this service would be unable to make phonecalls...
It does still have EVDO but that's slow and makes the phone pointless to release among Australia's market.
I dont know about the EVO using SIM cards but I was under the impression that it can function on 3G as well as 4G
The Evo, as a CDMA device released for Sprint, will not use a SIM card. But yes, the device will be able to function on both 4G and 3G. It will search for a WiMAX (4G) connection, and if it cannot connect, it will then search for a EVDO (3G) connection.
I have a feeling they will have a SIM card for the phone. Otherwise it wouldn't make for a great world phone Verizon has SIM slots in some of their phones in order to be a world phone on GSM networks.
I think the same will apply here. Knowing HTC they will follow up with a phone that will be equivalent in a next HD3/HD4 release for 850/900 networks.
They are truly moving the whole phone market at the moment. They are the phone company to beat in regards to style and innovation.
I do like the Samsung Galaxy S as well. But I have become attached to the Sense UI and that is one of the main reasons I do not want to get the Nexus One for AT&T. I will pay a little more to get the one from Telstra is AT&T doesn't release any news of a better android phone by April 27th.
I am due for an upgrade or I will move to Sprint for the EV0 4G which I think I will get anyways.
I have the Tmobile HD2 and the lock ups pisses me off even with several of the other ROM's I have flashed.
Oh well can't have everything. I might return the phone. I have a few more days.
this phone will not work in Australia. it is not a world phone and was developed for Sprint to steal business from other US carriers. there is no SIM card and if the 4g in Perth is LTE instead of WiMax, data won't work there either. EVDO isn't compatible in any way with GSM. Most likely, this phone won't be able to be flashed to work on another CDMA company here in the USA. Sorry, I know GSM is a world standard, but Sprint here provides the best service/price without a doubt and average speeds are better than GSM here because of how the GSM companies spread out their towers compared to the EVDO companies. this is an amazing break for us on Sprint since our phones generally SUCK. Even the Pre which debued on Sprint turned out to be a flop because Sprint had no standards for software or hardware and the first phones released fell apart by just looking at them the wrong way. at least this time, the phone is based off another phone (hd2) but better and running Android.

It's a shame that it uses the CDMA network instead of GSM. This is the only credible challenge to iPhone so far. I'm dying to see it coming to Australia. My only concern is still the accuracy of the touch screen. Hope that HTC has sorted this out by now.
Yeah it's a real shame this isn't a world phone. It packs a royal punch.
The Desire isn't too bad a competitor to the iPhone though. Why not consider that?

Why is it that all the coolest gadgets get to one of the worst carriers first? I love the specs of the Supersonic (EVO 4G) or whatever you want to call it. The problem is with Sprint. I've tested HTC EVDO products (HTC Titan) back to back with HTC GSM products (HTC TyTN). The CDMA products suck battery life much more quickly than the GSM products. If found this on almost every Sprint and Verizon CDMA smartphone. This is probably why the the Supersonic has a larger battery.
Also, it is true that some CDMA products do not allow simultaneous data and voice transmission. This may not be true of this device because it will be able to do CDMA for phone and WimaX for data. I am very interested in this device but I'd be much more interested if this device were on AT&T or even T-Mobile.
I am loving the HD2 running on AT&T. But I'd love more internal memory, the front facing camera, the kickstand, the better camera, etc.
sprint is the cheapest carrier, but valid point with battery useage. I also don't particularly like having to get an "OK" from sprint to change phones. Wish you could use a SIM card.
question though... how often are you browsing the web or using data while talking on the phone? I can't think of one instance in my past 10 years with a cell phone that I needed data while talking. If you're on the net, your data gets put on hold untill after your phone call is over. Back when I had dialup, my phone service offered a similar feature, and cdma does the exact same thing.
As far as everything else, speeds, coverage, dropped calls, annoying but I hear complaints from customers from all the different carriers, it's a cell phone thing.

i have friends with their iphones and their internet sucks compare with my htc pro 2 on sprint.

lol there is gonna be a GSM version no doubt. there will definitely be a variant of the Supersonic(aka EVO 4G here in the US for Sprint) in Europe/overseas NO DOUBT that you'll only be able to use on EDGE here but there will probably also be a GSM variant here in the states for another carrier that is basically the same phone but a little different and with different radios or whatever. an example would be the supersonic for t-mobile, lets say their first HSPA+ compatible phone or something, they call it whatever they want and HTC basically makes it for them using the core parts of the supersonic and keeps everything like android and whatnot and just changes up the radio and changes CDMA to GSM and puts in tmo's 3g bands in the radio, and whatever other physical changes t-mo may want like the buttons and whatever.

Last time i checked, Sprint (and by extension CDMA) usually gets last dibs on the cool phones. Name them...Touch Diamond/Pro/Pro 2, HTC Hero, Nexus 1. They never even carried the Touch Diamond 2 till today.

I have never gotten one dropped call since I got my hero, and I talk 2000+ minutes a month. I have 3g almost everywhere.
Also, no matter what people say, sprint has amazing customer service. I mean, at least you don't get put on the line with some indian guy half way around the world who just tells you to turn your phone off then on again...
oh and, at&t just sucks... no matter what hahah I'm glad sprint is stepping up to the plate. they offer amazing deals, great phones (as of now) and I think, are starting to move up in the world

AT&T does suck, but I'm stuck on them. I use Sprint for my data service (aircards FTW) and they have AMAZING customer service. Whereas AT&T just *****es about everything and tells you how wrong you are, then tells you how happy they are you stay them. If they didn't have such fast 3G (which in my rural area isn't crowded, so it is reliable) I would switch to Sprint in a heartbeat. Too bad EvDo pretty much sucks

I think the battery suck issue is not so bad given the fact that you can get almost unlimited voice, data, and messaging (of all sorts), plus turn by turn GPS+traffic routing, for $70/mo, less with discounts.
Where's AT&T or TMo's 4G network? I don't hear them actually deploying LTE in any other market other than testing. Kudos to Sprint... psyched for EVO.
ok, so the deal with this phone, ive been reading up on the specs, 4g (6mb/s) is 10x faster then 3g(300mb/s) i run off clearwire internet witch happens to run off the same exact wi-max as sprint and let me tell you, it is FAST. the processor in the phone is a massive 1ghz! for a phone, thats a overkill, plus 588mb of ram... i cant wait to try to overload this phone... probaly take 50+ apps running at once... 4.3 inch touch screen, 8 mega pixel camera, android 2.1 (unless they release a update before the phone is released) i say all in all this phone is going to be by far the fastest android phone on the market, and PS: the HTC HD2 IS the same exact phone just running WinMo 6.5, slightly better processor but clocked the same, same ram, same screen size, its the same phone with a slightly different button layout.

he did say "variant"
as in its not exactly the same but close, a knockoff, cousin, whatever. everything is almost identical spec wise just the os is different. thus its a variant. if GSM'ers want the evo in a gsm model. you could help with the port of android to the hd2. just a thought.

It's not really a variant. The OS makes them completely different. One is full of future; another is just about dead. Unless someone could port a high quality and well tested Android into it, then it would be a different story.
Well I the closes variant to the Evo 4g is the Desire or Nexus One. If you can do away with the 4.3 inch screen, 4g Wimax, 8MP camera and the extra memory. Well the year is young, so who knows.
Sprint is great in Minneapolis.

I was just wondering if the Droid Incredible is Verizon Wireless only? My problem is that I'm from Norway and really interested in this phone, but it isn't available here. So if I import it, will it be SIM-locked?
Or can I wait until a custom ROM is made that is unlocked?

Like said above the Droid Incredible is CDMA not GSM. So pertaining to your question, yes it is (in a way) SIM locked as you can't use it on any other carrier.
From what I understand though the HTC Desire may be what you are looking for. From what I hear it is European/GSM version of the Incredible.

If you have a CDMA carrier than yes there is a way to use it. otherwise your bet bet is to use the desire.

There actually is a CDMA/1xEV-DO Rel. 0/1xEV-DO Rev. A provider in Norway, although when I tried to look up their CDMA coverage area online I received a 404 error (it probably doesn't help that I can't read Norwegian to save my life =p). Nordisk Mobiltelefon Norway provides the network via ice. However, I would never recommend a CDMA phone to someone who spends the majority of their time outside of the US or India (I'm not saying it wouldn't work, but if you live in Europe I highly suggest going with a quad-band GSM phone) and even then, you should buy the phone locally to know that you will be with a provider that works with your phone's frequencies.
The exciting thing is LTE looks to be the first real WORLDWIDE band. My guess is that in 5 - 10 years you will be able to travel the world and get fast speeds with excellent quality calls with one phone. That is unless corporate greed gets in the way (Sprint launched the EVO not using LTE but WiMAX because even though though Clearwire has few WiMAX deployed points, there are even less LTE). Regardless of WiMAX being out of the gate first, I have a feeling LTE will win in the end (if not, then we will be left with a CDMA vs. GSM issue again).
I'm a Cellular South user who's reallllly lusting after the Epic 4G -- sadly it looks like it's going to be the only Galaxy S slider released. Once the phone is released and rooted, would it be possible for the phone to work on non-Sprint carriers? I've currently got a HTC Hero, and I know for the longest time our ROMs were based off of the Sprint RUU.
Just curious if this is plausible, very likely, or not a chance in hell.

Sure it will be possible just like the Hero was. 4G won't be possible, but the phone will be able to at least make calls until you figure out any of the other stuff needed for data and market.
How compatible do you think this phone would be with MetroPCS? Also, I heard that LTE could be added with a firmware update on this phone, or at least phones like it. Is that true? If so, do you think it might work on other future 4G networks, like that of Verizon or Metro? Sorry for all the potentially silly questions, I've never shopped for a CDMA phone before.
LTE uses a SIM card I believe so without the hardware built into the pone, you couldn't use it on that kind of network.
I read a blog with an interview of a Sprint higher up saying that they could potentially change the technology of 4g quickly and cheaply in places that currently have 4g. However, I don't know if that means another set of GSM 3G vs CDMA 3G like we have now. Maybe it would be a CDMA LTE that doesn't use a SIM?
Hopefully they just leave well enough alone. I know the technology will be different at Verizon (LTE) and T-MO(HSPA+), but differences usually foster growth for the best to keep up. I guess that would also eliminate a roaming data possiblity.
Who knows...lots of questions.

No US release, but you can buy it, and import it, to the US. I did just that. You get all the function of the phone, but instead of 3G you only get 2G (the bands work on T-Mobile and AT&T). Not a problem for me since 99% of the time I'm in a Wi-Fi zone. Even using 2G only I get speeds around 500 KBPS. Very usable. The hardware and software blow the Evo out of the water. It's not even a comparison, and besides the Evo is Sprint only. I'm on T-Mobile, and they have no phone that is Android with a 4.3 screen, and the specs of the DHD.
If only carriers such as TELUS or some other carrier from Australia will work for the ATT 3g. Maybe bell Canada will sick it up. I hope.

ATT's 2G speeds are incredibly slow... the most i get is 150kbps, which takes me almost 20 mins to download (for example) angry birds from the android market. I've had the hd2 without 3g access for a while now, and am tired of not being able to look something up really fast when I need it. Anyone know of any equivalent to the desire HD (except for the galaxy) that may be coming out soon, that can be used on ATT's 3G network?

Nope, the incredible HD is the similar to the EVO as it will be CDMA and not GSM

Thats why im getting pissed off. WTF is that all about HTC!!!! I want fast connection and I love DHD. Evo came out, Droid X came out and i couldnt get any because CDMA. Now DHD is out but no 3g in NA !!!!! now Incredible Hd will be out and CDMA also
Where did you buy ur DHD from and at what price. I am planning to do the same to use it in CANADA hopefully

I read that T-Mobile users will have to switch out to an AT&T smartphone device (at no cost or so they say) in order to stay on the 3G network because of the frequency difference. With that said it will be the end of our HD2 at least on 3G, even if it's a year out this phone still has over a year left of use in it.

Not true. Nothing will happen for atleast a year. Plus.......from what I have read...they bought T-Mobile to add the 2 networks together. At&t has run out of room and want to unload some of they're weight onto tmobiles spectrum.

they paid the FCC ridiculously for the right to that frequency and by adding the two different frequencies together and by designing phones with radios to access both frequencies, AT&T be able to compete with Verizon in terms of network coverage speed etc. This merger could be good for us as long as they don't price gouge us.
It doesnt make any sense unless at&t plans to sell the tmobile frequency to another cell company to force customers to switch to at&t phones...I dont see how or why that would ever happen makes much more sense to combine networks to increase speed and coverage and provide better service bc that is what will get and keep customers
If AT&T jacks up rates and tries to play the TMobile customers who went to TMobile in the first place bc Tmobile was the only wireless competition who went after Verizon and AT&T by offering better prices then AT&T can kiss its TMobile customers goodbye. I hate this merger from a consumer perspective but if they dont get greedy it might be ok...I dunno lack of competition is almost always bad for consumers

AT&T has announced it is NOT going to us T-Mo's frequencies. They are going to upgrade the T-Mo towers to their 4G LTE tech, rendering our 3G phones useless. This is supposed to take a year or two though.
so whoever has the tmobiles "4G" aka HSPA+ devices, will be able to use that "4G LTE" network that they gonna add which should make G2 MT4G capable of the real 4G speeds?
No HSPA + uses GSM crap and whatnot whilst LTE is like next gen GSM. So no, if you have an HSPA+ phone it won't work on LTE.

Well as said. LTE is like a next gen or evolution of GSM. So alot of carriers are moving to it, if not all. At&t, Verizon, Sprint, Europe is going there. Maybe asia. So maybe LTE will be the new GSM.
Only downside is for people who live in third/second world countries.
Although you won't expect a big wave of LTE devices to hit anytime soon however, and make GSM obsolete.

well yea thats true but withing next like 2 years they should start popping out fast
nothing is changing any time soon.... They are honoring all contracts that are entered before the merger happens. MEANING if you have an hd2 you have nothing to worry about. I for one will not still be using it in two years from now. There will be WAY better phones by then.
what a niche of people are worried about is if the $10 web2go or $5.99 tzones UNLIMITED DATA WITH TETHERING NO CAPS will still work..
