i know wing linux project
but my question was if is possible tu flash a new rom using a linux pc...

I think that it's not possible because currently the linux kernel can't read/write on the device storage. Which is the reason wing-linux must be installed on external storage.
But I can't remember where I've heard this. It was probably on IRC, however I can't find the exact reason in my logs (only a reference that it can't be used). So I can't say if it'll ever be possible any time in the future.
Also, I did a quick search to see if anyone did such a thing on any device (to understand what's involved) and I didn't find anything. Might be cause I didn't search too much.
And if flashing a *nix ROM is possible, you'll definitely need to have a different bootloader. I've been told about a bootloader called EOL, some people on the linwizard project are using it. I didn't get the chance to try it but I've been told that it'll be needed to modify the *nix installation so that it would be able to start radio (it currently relies on WM doing that). And that is supposedly not that difficult.
So it might be a good step to check that bootloader.
Right now, your best bet for an easy/quick linux boot is using a very lite (completely stripped) ROM with this integrated:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623792
Perhaps something similar to this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623048
There was also an even lighter ROM with a pretty much non-functional WM but I can't remember for what device it was.
EDIT:
SORRY! I should have read the thread before answering, I've only read the title and posted.
I should post that in the project thread instead.
As for your question, look at this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=399762
It didn't work for me when I tried but it was long ago so it might work now.

tanks a lot for all info
do you know if is possible do the hard spl whit linux pc
i'm a debian user and don't have a windows pc

If the RUU I linked in the previous post do works with the Opal, it should be able to flash both ROMs and Hard SPL.
However, there's no mention of the Opal/Viva in the (known) supported devices or in the thread. So you'll need to give it a shout for yourself.
Obviously you'll be doing that at your own risk, when I tried it myself (as I said, long ago) it didn't work for me but it didn't brick the device. But I can't guarantee similar results.

thanks so much
friendly and helpful as always

Origignal German Tmobile rom needed or way to backup it.

Hey guys you really need to help me on this.
I wanted to update my athena to wm6. Unfortunatly i didnt run the unlocker before and now i can´t even do a hard resest.
But i can go in booloader mode. People adviced me run the unlocker but the athena isent recogniced by the unlocker. So i cant do this either. Except you can say to me what went wrong?
So i think the only thing to rescue my ameo is to get the original tmobile german rom so that i dont get the wrong vender id error.
If somebody of you can supply me with that it would be awesome. If not is there a way to make an installer or backup of the german rom. Because i have a friend who has a working ameo. But he is no geek. So the complex cant be to complex.
Plz help me my ameo is not running for days and i want to use it again.
You're going in the right direction by starting a new thread here. However, people with the skills may not be reading this forum. May I suggest that you post this question also on a forum more likely to be read by people who knows how to do this as well?
I was thinking maybe here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=259 since your question is relevant to all phones, not just Ameo.
Also, all the ROM cooks must know. May be PM them will give you better chance of getting help?
There is this very clever guy by the name of dark simpson who started this thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311909
I also suggest that you read this thread to get a feel of his area of expertise. I read only a few posts in the thread so far not think he definitely knows a tool that you can use to extract your ROM. Read this thread to see if your question is already answered. Else may be you could PM him to give you pointers on how to solve your problem.
Good luck, and I hope you get it working soon.
thank you that helps i will check the thread.
See the next post
This article is more directly relevant for your problem.
http://www.modaco.com/content/Daily...p-rebuilding-and-restoring-your-SPV-M700-ROM/
He outlined 9 steps there. The first step could be ignored as it deals with installing Olipro's unlocker.
Step 2 to 8 deals with backing up the ROM. Some steps pertains to optimizing the size of the bin file and is not really needed, but I guess there is no harm still. All the tools you need are there too. Step 9 is to flash the WM5 rom created by step 2 to 8.
After that, you could install Olipro's unlocker then flash to PK 3.0.
The author of this thread, Paul, looks like a nice and helpful guy. I suggest that you read his articleon how to back up ROM carefully. It's on a different device, but I think the principle is the same. Once you have understood the step, get him to help you to adapt the procedure for Ameo.
Hope that helps you.

thank you that looks quit complicated, i dont know if i can convice the friend to install a lot of apps on his device, he is more like a bussines partner but perhaps i find somebody on the net, who will do it for me and i can supply them with the guide.
What do you think in which forum im most likly to find somebody with the original german tmobile rom?
If you read the link carefully, you'll see that there is no need to install anything on your friend's unit. It will only do a read. Not write involved. Anyway, the most likely forum where people have that ROM is here.
Anyone still on Tmobile WM5 (german) able to help?
hey i carefully read the thread and even i don´t understand it fully. Its not that easy to do. I don´t think he can do it. This is procedure for experts. Anybody must have the original rom here.
ok thanks for your help. I found the solution in a german forum. For everybody needing the german rom go to http://www.ppc-welt.info/community/showthread.php?p=964813#post964813
and click on the link.

Newbie puzzled!

Hi guys!
I'm not easily puzzled by terms and stuff to do to tweak your hardware, but since I'm all new to WM, I am trying to make sense of how to go ahead with running a custom ROM. I have a TC with original UK ROM.
First, obviously I should make a dump of my currently installed ROM. I am just very unsure how I achieve that?
Second, I have figured out that I need to Hard-SPL to get rid of certificate-checking in de device to run ROMs.
Third, I need to flash a custom ROM ... at this point I can have my way with the device, and do what I want. Also, not clear how I do that, unfortunately
Offcourse, at some point I will want to return my device for maintenance, warranty or maybe even sell it ... at which point I need to un-do the HardSPL hack, and reflash with the original image ... How would I go about that?
I've searched the forum, and I couldn't find it unfortunately, maybe, since I am a newbie, I missed a term to search for, or maybe I completely misunderstood
Any hints are very welcome!

All of your questions had been answered a number of times already in this forum so there's only one thing you can do, Search and you will find the answers.
Hi. I'm actually searching for the same stuff and haven't found some all-in-one topic yet.
Don't mind "kutonglupa", i'm beginning to think he's a bot on this forum. Even though you say (i did it too) that you used the search function he can only come with one response: "use the search".
I'll keep searching too.
Try this for starters: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356895
You probably know this already
Hard-spl flash:
Download hard-spl
Plug the usb cable to your pda.
Run RomUpdateUtiliy on PC.
PDA will display tricolour.
You will be asked REPLUG you usb cable. DO IT!
After a few second Hard-spl will be upgraded!
Rom flash:
Download the rom
Step manually to bootloader (press and hold camera button and press reset)
You will get a tricolor screen.
Plug the usb cable to your pda
Start RomUpdateUtiliy.exe (or Rom.exe) on you Pc.
Pda screen will be grey, you will see the process indicator.
When it is 100%, update is finished.
Radio-rom flash
The same as rom flash above, just download and use the radio-rom.
Back to offical rom + radio:
The same as rom flash above, just download and use the offical rom!
Back to original spl:
At this time no working method as I know...

Newbie thanks for opening this thread,
it give a very good overview what to really do for flashing the Rom without having to read through XX Pages.
Unfortunately I have still have not found a right link on how to backup my orginal O² German ROM.
What do I need for this just in case I do need to send in the Polaris?
Is the software specifc for the Polaris?
Look forward for a quick note.
Cheers
Rar9
Be careful with what you try from the Kaiser forum in terms of tweaks though, I've read people had problems using them on the Polaris. see the Polaris tips and tricks thread for details

Thanks dude. You're welcome!
I was reading now in the whole forum for about two whole afternoons, and I have to say that I still have the same questions as the threadstarter.
These questions answered once and for all, this thread would be worth pinning in my opinion, because complete newbies don't know where to find the necessary information in this really huge forum.
For the case someone wants to come up again with "use search", I will try to make clear, what problems of newbies (including me) are:
For example: I now already found three different lists of HTC-cab-files in the forum, one here in the polaris-section, one in the general section, a half one in the wiki... often without version-info, and so don't really know whats the actual one...
so far so confusing, I tried to search for the answers onto the exact same questions as the threadstarter posted. in the wiki, there is simply nothing on WM6, no tools, no real how-to, nothing a newbie can use.
Only thing I could understand from wiki, is that cooking an own ROM, needs to have a unix(-like) OS, and even there, I'm not sure if it is still actual for WM6.
Reading a bit around, I then was glad to at least find out that the devices are locked for non-certified ROMs, and that one needs to do that HardSPL.
Well that's as far as I could get until now, and I really don't know much more than before. Pretty unsatisfactory...
So could anyone make (or point to) a little overview of what one needs to know about dumping, flashing WM6-ROMs, and before flashing, what one needs to "cook" an own ROM.
Perhaps I was imagining this way to easy, but I thought about nLite/vLite-style applications for customizing ROMs?! Probably you'll all laugh at me, but I would very much appreciate taking me serious, because I want to learn how to do it. Simply don't want to lose time searching the forum for information, that don't help me advance...
thanks a lot
Eric
EDIT:
well I found this, which I can only recommend to all newbies: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356895
with this, questions of flashing are all answered,
but what tools one needs for dumping, flashing, editing ROMs and all of the remaining questions mentioned above remain open

[REQ]ROM for M3 (from Handheld) [BOUNTY: most likely!!!]

Am trying to find a ROM for a device we use at work, its painfully slow and I would like to know if any chef around there could possibly help out in cooking a ROM for it.
I can supply a unit for testing purposes.
More info about the unit can be found here:
http://www.ruggedm3.com/default.asp
and here (in Swedish!):
http://www.handheld.se/prod_m3.asp?m1=produkter&m2=handdatorer
It runs windows CE 4.2 (which i presume is 2003 second edition?), and thats fine, but I'd like some stuff taken away from the ROM and a few changes made, not much really.
Its ok to PM me or answer in this thread (unless the mods remove it... )
Hm.. what stuff do you want to be taken away?
A few applications that are not neccessary and change a few registrysettings plus add two certs. I think thats it. As I said, I dont really want that many changes...
Well this is easy I just need the rom image if you have it

[Request Help] Just got my HD2... New to this forum:(

I hope this is the right section. If i just posted on the wrong section, i hope moderators can move this thread instead of closing it. Thanks
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, i believe some of you remember that i am switching from X1 to HD2... Well, i have changed it and i'm using it now (love the big screen)
I was wandering around this forum... I saw a post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=578575&highlight=dualboot
What does it actually means by: "ANDROID/MAEMO/LINUX on HD2"
Is it that when i flashed it, my Windows OS platform is gone for good???
Then... ... I searched deeper. LOL, and notice this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623792
I am very very attracted to the DualBoot... Thats actually i wanted for my HD2.
Well, thats not my main question/request...
A troublesome request will be appearing after this sentence, i hope that you guys wouldn't feel fed-up. *(Apologize to you first)*
The most important question... Is it compatible for HD2??? If its not, sorry for this post.
If it is compatible, could someone spare me their time to guide me along the step and procedures to install the android OS and then the DualBoot.
If possible, mind attaching/link the required file for this whole process.
A million thanks to you guys. Sorry if i speak a bit to harsh
P.s. Sorry if there is a guide already up there in the forum . I'm a student and need to study for my test, didn't have time to search so many pages
I don't mind if you copy/paste the guide here... Just attach the required files needed.
Thanks once again
...Sorry if i speak a bit to harsh
I would like to advice you to read more of the ANDROID/MAEMO/LINUX on HD2 thread. You'll see that it still is in full development. For android to work developers need to create a custom kernel that will run on the HD2 using Haret. There is no question of a nand flash of android as of yet.
Now even with the use of Gen.Y dualboot, if you are not able to boot into android, the application in itself is still useless (on HD2). Furthermore, the dual boot application does in fact start your windows mobile Rom but directly start Haret instead of completely loading windows mobile (correct me if i'm wrong please).
So to sum up. Don't worry about flashing over windows mobile. This isn't possible (yet). Running android is not working (yet). And even with the use of Gen.Y dualboot, you'd still run windows mobile as a flashed rom and not Android itself.
I do have to ask though. If you just got the phone and already want Android.. why didn't you get an android phone? Ofcourse if you are like me and just like to tinker with your phone I can understand .

regarding rooting kindly advise

hi
im planning to buy a tatoo soon i do know that maybe i should wait for the wildfire but then i want to try android and tatoo is within my budget

Hi
i have been here for some time and i have searched but was not able to find anything on the same anyway their was one nice person who was kind enough to reply to my PM regarding the same and now i seem to understand its like the Hard SPL done for Win Mo
root/
firstly to understand root you need a little linux understanding, a simple definitive answer is here...
http://www.linfo.org/root.html
now back to the tattoo, you will see in the first few threads that guides and how-to's are available to help you root your phone, its easier now than ever,
theres a simple click and wait method, (it works well but you wont really understand whats going on using that method )
the SPL is not the same as root, hard spl allows cooked roms to be flashed and on some devices it re-maps the device memory to give more space ( see G1 danger spl for details )
follow any instruction very carefully if your used to windows mobile - its all a bit different with android, there is so much scope though and lots to learn which is the best bit i feel..
