Is it possible to set-up proxy for wifi? at school we are using proxy to use the internet. i'm not a iphone fan but its really easy on the iphone and would like to know if it was possible with hero/android
if this is not possible will it come later to android?
Check this out:
http://code.google.com/p/proxysetting/
It appears to be an app that will do it for you. It might be on the market too, I haven't checked. Just did a quick google search and it was the first thing that came up.
Why isnt it build in? Will it be build in with later releases of android?
I will look at the link maybe i will find something great
That should do the trick, that is exactly what I'm searching for!!
I'll test it at work tomorrow and let you know if it worked, I allready set the proxy, really simple prog to work with. I REALLY hope it works.
Hmm, the programme doesnt do anything. Still cant connect to the internet. Anybody got other suggestions..?

Your phone may need to be rooted for this to work... that's just a shot in the dark. As soon as I get my Hero (yeah, I'm trolling the forums before Telus even has them in stock) that's the first thing I'm gonna do, but some people are more cautious, so it's up to you if you wanna bother rooting your phone on the off chance that it'll get the app I linked to work.
EDIT: My bad, if you check the "issues" page on the site, you'll see that it hasn't been updated to work on cupcake. :/
will there be proxy settings in donut?

It's hard to say. I found this "complete" list of donut features:
http://www.betanews.com/article/Android-Donut-SDK-released-Whats-new-inside/1253057624
I wouldn't be surprised if the inclusion of full VPN support also brought proxy settings with it, but it's hard to say.
Thnx for the article, its great.
Is the new version (donut) already released? Or when will that be?
Oh yeah, how will Hero users be able to work with the new version of android?
Because we got htc 'sense' above android, so I guess HTC also has to release a new version of the 'sense'??

Yes, donut was released on September 15th, but there are no phones that come with 1.6 on them. The CLIQ is supposed to be the first one, I think. Cupcake applications are expected to run on Donut, so I see no reason why a Hero update (both official and non-official) wouldn't be too far down the road.
I don't have a Hero yet, but I've been running Android on my Vogue for over a year now, and last week I actually ran a Donut build. It's very nice, although the vogue build is missing a lot of apps, like GMail, and contacts don't sync, so it's not really feasible for us to use until more development is done on it.
donut wasn't released but the SDK. with SDK can developers edit(if its needed) their programs to make it work in donut or just test it before the donut comes out. htc will make there sensui work in donut because it would be there shell for android and wanna us it with new htc android phones. but if it comes to hero i don't know i hope so or i will feel like i left behind.
sensui is nice but i think it slows down the phone but thats what i think. i would prefer the speed above sensui.

Yes and no... the SDK is what was officially released on the 15th yes, but google has been adding donut into the android source tree for a while now. The SDK includes a donut system image to run in the emulator, and which can also run on phones (as this is what I've run on my vogue) but of course is missing several google apps. The market and youtube are included though. The source for donut is all in the git tree along with cupcake and... 1.0, whatever its codename is. It's just up to phone manufacturers to take the source and build specific images for their devices at this point, although I'm sure google still has updates to add to it as well.
HTC Hero update to Android 2.1 pegged for mid-March
By Chris Ziegler posted Feb 9th 2010 5:35PM
We've known for ages that HTC's been working on yanking its custom-skinned Hero off of Cupcake's rusty frame, but so far, the only way to drop Android 2.0 or 2.1 on your phone has been to cheat, root, and load a custom or leaked ROM in place of the official first-party firmware. If you're too straightedge for that, though, keep the faith -- your binary isn't too far off. PR released today indicates that we can expect the Hero to get an Android 2.1 update with Sense in "mid March" according to HTC's Benelux team, and it'll feature a new Friend Stream widget that aggregates user updates across services (presumably a nod to Blur), tweaked Exchange support, and a handful of other goodies. This isn't necessarily indicative of when Hero versions in other regions (Sprint's version, for instance) will pick it up, but it's a solid start.

blah wtf!!!. Its good dont get me wrong but still sketch on the sprint update
Ugh, I'm sick of waiting. T-Mobile here I come.
And thats from HTC. So we can expect an additional wait time from Sprint doing their crappy app tweaks. Maybe they will finally get Sprint tv working.

I heard from an HTC rep that for Sprint it will be Feb 22.

Along the same lines...If sprint were to post their update after the HTC official drop does that matter? Can't this be flashed directly to our phones (with out the sprint apps obviously)?

I think Sprint has to handle getting their network settings configured, so the Hero knows what to connect to.
I just talk to an HTC rep today and they said the same thing.
I sure hope it comes soon since the Droid is getting theirs this week according to this website

So if what the HTC reps told the two above posters is correct (not holding my breath), would it be better to go ahead and go with HTC's 2.1 or wait until one of our devs cooks one up?
By the way that this forum is looking we should have a pretty good looking 2.1 here pretty soon anyway. Just wondering.

As soon as the HTC update drops, our devs will have it re-released for rooted users.. Probably within a day.
In short, if it drops, I'd wait at least 24 hours prior to installing the authentic version, because it'll close the loophole you used to root in the first place.
will we be able to go back?
Say we flash the rom the day it comes out...im dieing to try it... will we be able to use the recovery tools to unflash or will it somehow kill our recovery tools?

From my experience with the PSP, DO NOT UPDATE YOUR PHONE! Give it a few days to make sure root is still possible or doable.
I'd wait until a dev cooks up a rooted version so you don't lose root.

Here's an official build of 2.1 WITH SENSE running on a GSM Hero. Cool to see what we'll have to look forward to.

I would rather wait for a custom Rom running 2.1 then use Sprints 2.1 Rom

EPIC on the march update but I want it now but who doesnt? I know I cant wait to un&*^& my market for my gmail account since i upped to a 2.0 AOSP rom signed in and went back to 1.5 forgetting about that from my android-vogue days and how it basically upgrades your market account then some apps purely wont be able to be found until you go back to that ver.

it now vibrates when recieving a text when the phone is in sleep mode. still doesnt wake the screen up but that might be on purpose...
i spoke too soon, its stopped vibrating again.lol. it seems to work for the first few messages then stops like before. oh well, better luck next time.

Yeah i too was hoping they would fix the notifications error, but maybe with the MR1 release we'll see it fixed
Cool, Updating my phone now.
Great to see an update but also kind of sad to watch the video demonstration and be told that the mr1 update is coming at the end of march (was hoping sooner).
-edit-
Neat, the dialer & the spb shell feel a little more responsive (dialer, contacts, clock all seem to launch faster, switches between landscape and portrait mode quicker).
Gives me a lot of hope about the full update later this month. =)

First link (http://xperiancers.com/2010/02/26/x2-application-update-at-www-sonyericsson-comupdate/) Scroll down a bit to the youtube video, it's the x2 project manager going over the update. He mentions that the update is just a small patch and that the full update is coming late march.
ooh that wasnt there when i read it
Maybe its the FroYo we've been waiting for...
http://www.androidguys.com/2010/04/14/rumor-nexus-major-ota-update/
If all goes well in the coming days to update the firmware for the Nexus One should be offered for download from Google. This major update brings more than 3 large compared to the current version:
- Better memory management with a new version of the Linux kernel to operate in short, all the device memory which is not the case today
- Fixed problem of MultiTouch when fingers are too close
- Activating the FM radio feature of the camera!
In short, that's good for the Nexus One. All that remains now to be hoped that it is officially distributed among us.

That got me scratching my head too.

Do realize it says this my friend:
"4. No source = FAIL"
Yeah, so don't expect anything.
Uhhh... I am pretty sure Froyo won't be ready for several months still.
Either way the big things I'm excited for is the support of animated gifs and the ability to upload from the browser. Woot
Lucky Nexus One bustards
As owners for X10, are we eligible for this update??
-----------------------------
Google is also celebrating today - Android 2.2 Froyo has reached two important milestones. Google open sourced the latest version and they are pushing out the final Froyo update to Nexus One users. And we're sure the timing has nothing to do with the launch of the iPhone 4.
Sure, Froyo has been available to Nexus One users for a while (mostly on dev phones and through manual updates), but this seems to be the final, official version of Android 2.2. You could manually download the update from here (it works only if you're running FRF50 firmware), though if you don't know what you're doing, you should wait for the OTA update.
Your Nexus One should automatically check for updates or you could force a check (go to Settings -> About phone -> System updates), so one way or another you should be getting a notification that a new version is available and download it Over-the-Air.
Some people are reporting that the update is not available for them yet, so it might not work right away - rolling out updates is a gradual process and it varies by location too.
The other important milestone for Android 2.2 Froyo is that Google open-sourced the code to their partners and manufacturers and everyone else too. This means that they can start working on Froyo firmwares for the non-Google phones.
------------------------------------------
Can we have official feedback from SE guys?

Well the Nexus One is a Google brand phone so it's no huge surprise that the Nexus gets it first. It'd be more suprising if it didn't.

Anybody is reading from SE team???

The way I see it with Android devices is that you buy the hardware and then hack the software to hell and back. Just didn't count on the X10 being so hard to mod when I got it, guess I'm too used to HTC phones.

I understand that 'root' has been achieved, but won't there be further delays until a stable custom Rom is created for the x10?

Thought as much. From the posts on other threads it seems as though posters think root and ROM will appear simultaneously.
I can imagine that the first ROMs we'll get our hands on will have all sorts of bugs, and we'll have to compromise on things like WiFi, Bluetooth e.t.c. Maybe due to lack of drivers available.
I'm going on past experience from The G1 and old WinMo devices.
Oh well.......
Remember to be realistic, guys. The devs can't just copy and paste Froyo onto our X10s without a hitch. It will take some time. I'm not even anticipating a stable version of Froyo on the X10 because it is a huge task.
What I'd like to see is the latest FW but stripped down with no branding or operator software (and no Moxier crap!!!). And if it's possible, for Flash to be released on the X10. That may not be feasible but I certainly hope it's available. SE takes forever!!
