Occasionally, when I go to launch the messaging app on my xv6800 either through HTC Home or from the hardware button, it will either not launch or take it's time freezing up the phone in the mean time. other times, it opens right up. Hit & Miss as some would say. Anyone else deal with this and/or have a solution?

I deal with it and it is annoying to say the least.
If the messaging application or any application is already running in RAM then it should start up faster, But if you close it out completely it will take a while to launch an application depending on the size.

Ditto.. Thought it was just me..
same here.. just something to live with.......
Just have it running in your phone's RAM. Don't close out of it because that's what will happen. I just leave mine running all the time, and I have my QuickMenu set to exclude it from closing it when you press X. It loads up instantly like this.
I suffer the same headache, though it only started for me about a week ago (and I've had my xv6800 for 4 months).
The only thing that has changed on my phone since Messaging started to freeze/lock up is that I installed the new PCM Keyboard (v 0.14). I doubt that's the cause, but wondering if any of you are running it too?
UPDATE
I recently installed SPB Pocket Plus due to some personal interests and after having it on for a day I noticed that launching the messaging application runs abit faster.

I have PCM 14 on mine too but haven't noticed if that's been the culprit. But the Quick Menu solution works.
I recently found a registry edit (though for the life of me I can't remember where) that sped up the launching of internet explorer. It took the launching from 4-5 seconds to instantaneous. Maybe there is a reg edit to fix messaging also?
Helo my beloved community!
So, since the HD2 utilizes quite a lot of the data connection quite frequently (mostly for weather updates), it would be good to have an option to disconnet the data connection automatically. I presume that this is probably a registry hack. This feature can be found for example in TD2/TP2 Tools. I don't want to wait until HD2 Tolls (or Tweaks or something else) shows up (I hope it will quickly because its always something very welcome!), so maybe someone could answer quickly where to tamper with the registry to do that?
Thx in advance!

I've used an old tweak I found which seems to have done the trick, not really watched it closely enough to find out as not had time yet.

thanks for the reply but ive installed the cab and restarted but it doesnt seem to do anything
I just did the mentioned reg edits but it didn't seem to work. Then installed the cab to countercheck for my mistake. Didnt change the result, didn't work...
Even though I noticed the CacheTime setting existed from the start and was set to 600 (10 minutes).
SuspendResume original value was "~GPRS!"
Data charges are not so much the issue, I'm just concerned it might drain the battery quicker if the connection remains open permanently.

Try to do the regedits like this:
SuspendResume=GPRS_bye_if_device_off
CacheTime=5 (decimal)
VPNCacheTime=5 (decimal)
It works on my TD2, which to my knowledge has the same WM6.5 as the HD2 does. By the way, did You set the end call button long press to "terminate data connection"? If You did, then UNDO it

Right, You can't check it, as none of the HD2's hardware buttons are configurable Just ignore that question. Anyway, I think Ive figured it out to some point. It looks like the registry hack works whenever the phone connects to the web to for example browse the internet or update stocks. But it DOESN'T WORK if the phone connects to download weather updates. It looks like the Sense weather app is somehow preventing the data connection to shut down. But I think it only happens when automatic weather updates downloading is set.
hmm you do appear to be correct... now why is the weather app hanging onto the data session
Well, just tried setting both CacheTime and VPNCachetime and when checking mail I can confirm it works.
Thanks a lot! Mail checking schedule set up.

absolutely no idea I think someone smarter than us should try to find the answer. Ive already done a rather brief look around the registry and tried to find something that would get the weather app such privileges but with no success. Im thinking of addressing a new topic about that, so its more visible to the community

Twitter app doesn't close the data connection either
This is really annoying me. My battery was draining fast and could not find out why. Now I have found out that it is because I am constantly connected to Mobile Web on O2. I have tried terminating it but it starts again. Even after unchecking auto update for weather and twitter it still turns on and never off. I have mail set to download automatically but if i turn that off too then what is the point of having this phone and feature?
I have tried the setting in HD Tweak app to turn off data after 1 minute but noy joy.
Any help? Pleaseee.

Theres one more thing you should check out. The biggest connection-demander was always the NOT PROPPERLY CLOSED OPERA. If you use the opera browser, be sure to close it NOT with the X in the upper right corner, but through Opera Menu->exit function. If you close it with X, it only goes minimized and does not shut down the connection. Even if you close it, because opera is still running, after some time it will want to refresh a page and conect again. Thats why you have the imression that the phone connects by itsself. Thats not the phone, its opera

I have installed a shortcut to taskmgr in my quicklinks - so if i see something constantly running i end task...it shuts it down rather than minimising it which is what happens when you hit the little X in most cases. The taskmgr tip is in the sticky at the top of the page.

Yes I know what you mean but you can't kill the weather app or twitter in this fashion as they run within Sense itsself. Besides, killing processes is not the point. The point is to have an automatic data disconnection, so you dont have to do or kill anything

Hey guys,
Can any one tell me what the VPN cache time was originally set as?
Hi All,
Very weird one this, I hard reset due to installing that virus (3d shoot 'em up thing here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=650393 ) and have come across a strange issue within Sense.
When I press "Settings" in the start menu (or slide across to it within Sense) I get the HTC settings menu, so far so good.
When I press "All Settings" under 'Menu' it opens the 'Connections' window, not the standard Windows settings, if I close the 'Connections' window, it returns me to the HTC settings menu.
Anyone know where I might be able to change the link, or at least find what the 'Connections' link is, so I may track it down please?
sorry. didn't fully read your post.
Half-asleep.
Please ignore me this time.

No problem.
I've managed to display the "All Settings" icon, albeit from within the Start Menu using the registry:
hklm -> security -> shell -> startinfo - change the "hidesettings" to 0.
I've found from the above, that "cplmain.cpl,19" seems to reference 'Connections', so pointing my search toward that at the moment.
Unless anyone else has any assistance?
Just noticed your post and having suffered also at the hands of the 3d terrorist bastards I thought I'd check mine......guess what.......all settings displays just fine, everythings there and opens up, trying to get out of it though is a different story, pressing "ok" just causes a pause, screen flicker and then same settings screen to reload.
Another problem I'm having since that virus is neither the htc music player or windows media player work at all.
ringtone doesnt play either.
Is that another hard reset I hear approaching?

These stories are tragic disappointments... I cannot believe everything that has surfaced from this TROJAN program. It's unbelievable... because here we thought that such a thing would NEVER happen to any of us.
I think more attention should be paid towards this issue... it's a rather SERIOUS inconvenience for a lot of people.
Hmmm not had any issues with this trojan other than it dialling out, although I did switch off the phone as it was half way through it's hilarious attempt at pissing me off. Media player is fine, sms is fine, email fine, rss reader, shares, weather, in fact the phone is now running better than ever
One things for sure, I reckon open market will be hit hard by this, once bitten twice shy so to speak.

Nah, I'm a glutton for punishment.
I've learnt a hell of a lot about the registry on this thing that I wouldn't have gone near otherwise!
I had a MyTouch 3G never used the search button EVER for the 8+ months I had it. Now when I got the MyTouch4G I have yet to use the genius button except to try it out.
Does anyone use the button regularly or is it a gimmick that the phone really didn't need?

It's way better than I thought it would be. In the browser and want to turn the WiFi on? Push the Genius button and say "Turn WiFi on". Bang, it turns on. No need to go into settings. Same for bluetooth and GPS. Want to open an app? For the sake of example, push the Genius button and say "Show me Angry Birds". Bam, you're flinging and busting in seconds. The Genius button can do a lot more than the few little examples we've already seen. So handy.

I tried to give the genius button a go. Every time I click on it I have to wait for it to sync my contacts. Takes to long for me, maybe there is a setting I missed. Been using Vlingo. Now that is an awesome app.
I thought it was a gimmick, but I use hands free mode every day! I love being able to hold text conversations without having to even look at my phone.
Also, since I learned I can open any app with it, I've been using it more.
I had played with the genius button on my gf's myTouch Slide and wasn't impressed, but the new version on the MT4G is sweet! You should give it a shot.
BTW, as far as activating your contacts every time you open it. Hit menu while you are in the genius app, go to phonebook updates, configure and select manual. That way it will never do that again. You just have to remember to update it whenever you add a new contact.

This basically sums up my thoughts exactly. Once I started messing with it, I found the feature to be really useful. Using it in the car through a bluetooth headset is the best since I don't have to worry about texting while driving.
how do you actually get it to send a text through the genius button, i can get it to put in the recipients name and message but i actually have to press send, and cool didnt know it could do all the other functions like opening up apps and turning on wifi
You can tell it to turn on the flashlight too.

Listen, fellas. Look at the 4 options on the screen when pressing Genius and just try to memorize them. Then, say 'more options' for the next 4 options and memorize them. Those 8 options make for a very powerful set of options. For instance, you can change to handsfree mode, in which case all calls and messages are read aloud. Very cool. Can Vlingo do all this, or even Google Search? It seems Genius is very integrated into the system.
I use it all the time when I'm driving.. the hands free mode is awesome.. now only if there was a app that can drive my car to work in the morning while i sit back and chill.. this phone would be awesomer !! but till this magic app comes available then the phone is just awesome.

Genius button is going to come in handy this winter when I have gloves on outside waiting for the train. Can do stuff you'd otherwise need touch screen for like launching apps, changing settings. (Espresso doesn't let you use optical trackpad to select icons on home screens, tho LauncherPro does.)

Hey thanks for the tip on manual contact voice activation. Didn't think to hit menu in the Genius app.
Anyone actually use the Genius button on a regular basis ?
Anyone else find it to be a stupid useless waste of space like I do ?

we have a Genius Button??? i havent even touch it once! USELESS for me, would love to find a way to remove the function and put something else that is usefull.
There is a thread in the dev section IIRC on how to remap it. I've tried it a few times, but it does not seem entirely useful or time saving.
I used it in the car when running stock. At the moment I'm using cm7 and it's mapped to Google Voice Search, which is similar in capability.
HTC Glacier running CM7 #28
Never used it while I was stock. In CM I have it remaped.

If you are having a problem with it verifying your contact list often try this:
When it activates and asks you to speak push the menu button. It will pull up the Settings and from there you can turn off the contact verification by going into Phonebook Updates and selecting manual. Or make some other adjustments to help speed it up a little.
I tried it and it worked well, but it takes 20 seconds for it to startup initially, and isn't very fast even after that.
So I remapped the keys so a press gives me search and a press-hold gives me voice search instead of the Genius Button app. Now I use it and find it useful. I'm tempted to see if I can turn it into a dialer button so I can always get to the phone app, since this is a phone....
using it to activate google voice search is better for me.

When we mentioned it taking forever to open, we weren't talking about the contact list updates. Mine has been on manual since I bought the phone. The app opens right away, but it doesn't actually start listening for commands, for at least 30 seconds, if not sometimes more. It isn't scanning or doing anything else you can turn off, it's just VERY laggy to start listening.

Hmmm...wierd, I dont have that problem at all. It starts listening as soon as I hit the button and the app opens. I even just tested it again and timed it with my stop watch.. From the time I longpress my button and it vibrates to open Genius it took 3.7 seconds for it to open and say "listening", me say "open rom manager" and it repeated it back to me and opened it. That is total time from the button press to when Rom Manager was actually open.
I am not sure what rom you guys are running or if you are rooted or not but if it is taking 5, 10, or 20 seconds for it to accept a command from you, then u got something going on. I am on CM7.
I am not here to argue with anyone over the opinion of a app. To each his own. But what I dont like to see is someone calling a app a useless waste of space, when it isn't. It is just like any other app, some people use and like it and some dont.

Mine took:
20 seconds the first time, 4 seconds the second time (I found the shorter time didn't last all that long in actual use). Yes, I had it on the default setting of updating contacts automatically. I don't see why I should have to change a default and give up the functionality for it to work. Still, I changed the setting, since I don't care about it, and rebooted my phone. 2 seconds to prompt me. I tried to open "Timer" and it kept opening "Camera" but that's a different topic. Nice to know it can be reasonably fast (thank you for the tip!), but the Google voice search is faster still and lets me call all contacts, even new ones.
I am not sure what rom you guys are running or if you are rooted or not but if it is taking 5, 10, or 20 seconds for it to accept a command from you, then u got something going on. I am on CM7.

No, *I* don't have something going on, the phone does. It did this from stock, it did this on several phones (I kept trying til I got a good screen), it does this rooted.
If the automatic update of contacts is so tough for it, it was a poorly chosen default, but it hardly constitutes my having something going on.
I am not here to argue with anyone over the opinion of a app. To each his own. But what I dont like to see is someone calling a app a useless waste of space, when it isn't. It is just like any other app, some people use and like it and some dont.

You are getting way too worked up over this. He didn't say it is a "useless waste of space", he asked if anyone else found it to be a "useless waste of space like I do", which is quite different. Even so, it would clearly be his opinion.
I generally find the Genius Button app to be accurate, not withstanding the above, but the Google voice search does nearly as much and works out of the box. It isn't worth my time to re-edit the keys to bring the app back.
Please note, I said "my time", not "your time" or "everyone's time"
Anyone, I don't suppose there is a way to make the physical "genius" button a general 'Find' like it is on my wife's Droid X?
Google voice search seems too be more intuitive, less intrusive, and launches much faster in my opinion. I've remapped genius button to launch google voice search.

hey excarnate,
1st...thanks for correcting my spelling
2nd...dont assume that I am worked up over something so trivial as if you or anyone else likes, wants to use or doesn't want to use a app. I could really care less and was only trying to let people know there are settings that can be adjusted to make it faster.
3rd...While I think that Google voice search works great I don't think it has all of the capabilities that Genius does but Genius has all of the ones that Voice search does. So to compare the two is a little harder than just saying that Google voice search is better because it is faster. Genius wins hands down when it comes to the amount of things it does in comparison to Google Voice search. Try telling Google voice search to "turn on wifi", "Open Settings", "turn of GPS"
4th...I am not sure what the "find" feature is on the droid phone but since you have taken the time to remap your genius button you can use the app called Button Shortcut (free in market) or Launchkey (free on xda) to open any other app with the long press of Genius/Search button.
Not sure why you decided to try and pick apart my post, but its all good.

Originally I used Button Shortcut to launch the Genius Button app, but after rooting my current phone (with a good screen!) I gave up on Genius Button. If I knew I could have turned off one of the defaults to make it perform acceptably, I would have made it the long press default. Maybe I still will, if I remap the button for any other reason.
Find, is simply find within the current app. If I'm in contacts, the find button lets you find something in contacts. If I'm in a webpage, I believe it lets one search in the webpage (I don't use her phone much so I'm not sure about this).
[mini rant about the contacts app on the MT4G deleted]
So my new take on the Genius Button is: it is worthless out-of-the-box. If your contacts are stable, disable automatic updates and only remap the long press (if desired). If your contacts aren't stable and are important, dump it for the Google search & voice search.
[New information: Even with manual updates of contacts it is very slow to start when on hands free (hands free mode or not). I plan to freeze it in Titanium Pro.]
