Occasionally, when I go to launch the messaging app on my xv6800 either through HTC Home or from the hardware button, it will either not launch or take it's time freezing up the phone in the mean time. other times, it opens right up. Hit & Miss as some would say. Anyone else deal with this and/or have a solution?

I deal with it and it is annoying to say the least.
If the messaging application or any application is already running in RAM then it should start up faster, But if you close it out completely it will take a while to launch an application depending on the size.

Ditto.. Thought it was just me..
same here.. just something to live with.......
Just have it running in your phone's RAM. Don't close out of it because that's what will happen. I just leave mine running all the time, and I have my QuickMenu set to exclude it from closing it when you press X. It loads up instantly like this.
I suffer the same headache, though it only started for me about a week ago (and I've had my xv6800 for 4 months).
The only thing that has changed on my phone since Messaging started to freeze/lock up is that I installed the new PCM Keyboard (v 0.14). I doubt that's the cause, but wondering if any of you are running it too?
UPDATE
I recently installed SPB Pocket Plus due to some personal interests and after having it on for a day I noticed that launching the messaging application runs abit faster.

Thanks for the Quick Menu tip! It works like a charm!

I have PCM 14 on mine too but haven't noticed if that's been the culprit. But the Quick Menu solution works.
I recently found a registry edit (though for the life of me I can't remember where) that sped up the launching of internet explorer. It took the launching from 4-5 seconds to instantaneous. Maybe there is a reg edit to fix messaging also?

Hi there,
i noticed that some apps start itself automatically and run in the background?! That is very annoying. I am observing this behaviour once or twice a day with taskiller advance. Suddenly apps like ak notepad, last.fm and locale are running even though i didnt started them. I guess this is not normal?
mfg smurf
I have noticed this as well on my Rogers Magic (32A). I think that if a process or other app (like email) needs to, it will activate a related process for it to function (touchscreen, keyboard, etc.)
When using AppKiller after having the phone do nothing for a while or just one app, I'll see a few others listed. Naturally everything ends up loading the "touchscreen" process...
I'm not sure if that means SMS will show up when typing an email because they share the keyboard (as if activating one typing app activates them all)... I've never tested that specifically.
It would be cool if it didn't need to do this, but I've become accustomed to just touching the kill all apps button
Cheers,
Chris

that sound reasonable but why is tunewiki starting for no reason or dolphin browser? Could it be bad programming? I noticed this behaviour only with a few apps but its quite anoying. They eat up memory and slow down the phone if i am correct?!

He has a point there, I don't think a third party app would start another third party app, unless they worked in conjunction. As for the problem, try reinstalling the apps.

i already tried. It doesnt matter if it is a stock, cyanogen or dwang rom. Taskkiller is showing me all this selfstarting apps after reboot and then they randomly start with no reason. Most annoying is dolphin browser. Kill it and its back in a matter of seconds eating up precious ram. Tunewiki, AK Notepad stay at least closed...
I've also wondered this and I've noticed Dolphin Browser and the TorProxy app always running, and respawn when they are terminated. I am sure it's because the apps are somehow configured to run as services, so started looking at linux services in adb. In adb shell I checked 'service list' but they were not in there, I wonder if there is a generic service that is there to keep apps alive. I'm interested to know the answer if anyone can throw some more light on it!
I noticed whenever I kill all apps, then for example, switch from 3g to wifi, or 3g to 2g, etc., dolphin browser and imusic will open in the background.... which is annoying.
Why would switching to 3g, 2g, or wifi make these apps open?
curious...

i tried this and after switching 3g and wifi off an on an instance of wifi static, sms/mms and handcent spawned. Even though the usual suspects didnt start most of this automagically starting programms are indeed in need of a data connection (tunewiki, dolphin browser, locale...). We could start a list of self starting programms!?
okay, i am pretty sure now that apps are starting when wifi is on, an then the phone is switched off, then wifi goes to sleep and when the phone is turned on again wifi also and apps which need wifi are starting.
Is this only bothering me? I mean it does deplete ressources/battery life, right? I am using a tasmanager which says that i have about 45mb of free memory. After resuming from sleep with all those self starting apps it is reduced to 25-30mb.
Can anybody confirm that this shouldnt happen?
btw dolphon browser seems to have been fixed. It doesnt start after waking up the phone.
EDIT: okay, i just found this little app:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-elsdoerfer-android-autostarts-jppi.aspx
maybe this is the solution. I am going to try it.
yeah I have the same issue both on cyan and dwang. on first boot ill run task manager and have a huge list of things, sometimes i have to kill a few times. then ill notice the phone is bogged, and check task manager and have tons of things running again.
Palringo is a pretty cool IM'ing app. The first time I installed it I found that my battery was getting chewed up even when the program was not running. I had some other problems with lock up. I uninstalled and after a couple of months I thought I would try it again.
Seems to be the same issues. Battery drain and some general lock up problems.
Wondering whether others have had similar problems.
never locked, using the current version (no beta). battery drain... I don't know really, I open it only when I need to chat, otherwise it stays shut so nobody bothers me
maybe you want to try beta version? it's been updated every 48 hours these weeks

Curious, if I close Palringo using the Task Mgr. I seemingly still show available to my contacts because they can IM me and I get a little envelope on my taskbar. If I touch that I get an option to open Palringo and then I can reply. So it seems that even when it is closed it is functiong somehow.

I think there is an option somewhere to define wether you want it to run in the background or not...
Great programme, i don't use it though anymore since i somehow messed the contact list and now it shows only few of them. The same with the PC client
I updgraded to the latest beta, no lockups at all, about battery I can't tell, I just chatted and messed around a few minutes. Be sure to disable the location service!!
I absolutely LOVE Palringo.
I do not go mobile w/o using this app I don't know if it uses a lot of battery, but I can say that this IM app is much better than a lot of others.
I even went PREMIUM, but sadly it doesn't work with the new MANILA/SENSE screens . They said soon it'll work and just imagine how nicely it will be implemented into 6.5.3 or 6.5.5

well have you checked task manager, cause when you click the "X" to close the program it only minimises it and doesnt close it. thats why your probably still receiving messages.
btw this is one of the best IM apps, although i wish they had implemented MySpace as well :/
Same problem here, battery drainage after I opened Palringo.
I've got this problem since I updated Palringo to version 2.5.6 r39750
If I close Palringo before going to bed I can be pretty sure to not be woken by my phone in the morning... Although sleeping long is pretty sweet, I don't like this behaviour too much.
Closing through the taskmanager (which tells me Palringo doesnt respond) leaves an icon on the taskbar. When I click that icon I get to choose between opening Palringo and closing the program. After closing (or trying to open) the icon vanishes and Palringo isn't listed in the taskmanager anymore. So far so good, but if I don't restart my phone, it will suck down the juice like me at an open bar ...
I didn't find any solution to this. Tracking is turned of.
I'm now trying to:
Close Palringo via the close-button of Palringo.
Set my status to offline before closing.
If you try to kill Palringo using the "x" button or a task manager it doesn't close itself, although it doesn't appear on the list anymore. Check running processes using a specialized process viewer, for example SKTools.
Quickfix: Use the exit menu in Palringo to quit the application.

Yes, this worked quite well for me. No more problems at all
Does anyone know of a program that will automatically end running programs after a set time of not being used.
I don't have the facility of touchscreen buttons now like with my old xda's, etc and would like to set the Snap to end stuff after a few mins of not being used instead of going through talk manager every time.
Cheers.
The HTC Dash 3G has a nice little feature that if you hit the back key 3 times it will end any running programs that have been sent to the background.. dont know if yours will do that or not but worth trying.
Nope tried that and that didn't work...
Would also like to know if this can be done ?

Wow, I didn't know that!
Hmm...doesn't work with SmartToolkit installed due to the back key being assigned to bring up a "quick" menu.
Just as well, since there is a "Task" button right next to it, lol!

So after running rooted Gingerbread for a while now I've noticed a few bugs and was wondering if I was the only one.
First thing is Swype. Yeah yeah, I know everyone has that one. But after uninstalling the old apk with Root Explorer and then installing the beta everything initially worked fine. But my first reboot after the install of the beta Swype force closes every time it trys to open. Uninstall and reinstall doesn't fix the problem. Weird, but not a huge deal to me as I didn't use it that much anyway.
Second, and the most annoying thing I noticed, is the back lit buttons stop lighting up after a certain period of time. The soft buttons under the screen and the slide out keyboard still work, they just don't light up. Rebooting fixes the problem.
Third is the built in battery manager seems to have some issues as well. Although it seems to inherently do a better job of saving battery life than in previous versions of Android. On my phone it sometimes won't come out of it's no-syncing state and allow data usage. Other times it will allow data usage after waking back up, but data seems extremely slow. Again a reboot fixes the issue.
And the last thing I noticed today. Although I haven't had any noticeable signal issues or dropped calls, I was getting drastically different signal readings sitting right beside a guy with a DROIDX at work. As in he was showing full 3G service and I was only showing one bar of 1X and like a -100 RSSI. I realize it's two different phones, but my understanding was that the X and the original 2 were pretty similar.
Just wondering if anyone else has noticed any of these things or if I'm the only one with some bugs? Or if anyone has any ideas about a solution for any of the issues?
FYI I'm far from an expert, but I'm not a complete Noob either. Although I don't have a ton of posts I've been hacking my cell phone since the days of my Razr and have had and rooted three Android phones to this point.
Anyway, thanks a bunch guys!

Only problem that I have is that using Launcherpro when the home screen is rotated 90 degrees (widescreen-ish) and then rotated back the wallpaper gets a "letterbox" effect similar to what you see on TV's. Haven't looked into it too much, probably just an issue with Launcherpro.

I noticed the same thing. And actually LauncherPro in general wasn't working too great for me after the GB install. I actually kind of like the stock launcher in GB so I ended up deleting LauncherPro anyway.

Yeah sorry I should have gone into more detail. Yes I did delete all entries I saw that referenced Swype, including the ones listed on the link.
To be even more specific when I try to do anything with Swype it says "The applitcation Swype (process com.swype.android.inputmethod) has stopped unexpectedly."
I'm having a weird bug where three shortcuts to games I put on my start screens keep disappearing: Bejeweled, Optime's Hangman and Tic Tac Toe. I put them back and they stay for a while, but eventually, just disappear. I even rebooted after putting them back and this did nothing. It's quite strange.

also i have the problem of the backlights only working when they want to.
Maybe Google's way of telling us to get off the games and get to work?

And I actually just noticed the games disappearing this morning. Weird.

The backlight issue bugs me to no end. I try to figure out how to restore it without rebooting but no success so far.
One other issue is that I can't access the multitouch keyboard. I disabled it because I really never used it, but then I felt like using it one day and there is no place to check to use it. I have SwiftKey installed as my only 3rd party keyboard
I'm having an issue with ridiculously low volume on phone calls......any fixes out there because it's hard to use your phone, as a, you know, phone, when you can't hear the other person on the line. I may have to SBF back and wait for the official 2.3 if it doesnt improve.
Rebooting takes care of the call volume problem.
Rooted Droid 2 running Froyo 2.2 with the 2.3.20 update
Yeah I had the low call volume too, I think everyone did. It went away after the first reboot.
As fas as the games disappearing. Someone mentioned Bejeweled, that's one of the ones on mine that keeps disappearing. There are a few that do it, I don't remember exactly which ones, but Bejeweled and Stupid Zombies are two that I remember always disappear.

my games are on the 2nd page to the left and for me its stupid zombies, angry birds, angry birds seasons, and angry birds rio that keep disappearing, the other 4 game shortcuts i have don't disappear. I also tried reversing where they sit and the same 4 shortcuts disappeared, even sitting in different locations.
Hmmm, who knows. Even though all of mine weren't disappearing, just certain ones, it got annoying to me. I just deleted the shortcuts from my screen and pull up the games from the launcher now.
It is strange that its only certain games, and that we all seem to have the same ones disappearing.

Hey guys, so I'm wondering if there is some sort of fix or mod I can do to make my home screen not reload all the time. It's frustrating going into an app for a second and going back to home and having it load which usually takes the majority of the time I have the phone on. Doesn't really matter what app I open, it will even do it coming from settings.
Now I did research this a bit and I don't have any task killers or many widgets on the home screen, to be honest, the stock oem home screen setup has more widgets and whatnot than I do. Can't I increase the cache size or something? Memory space has never been a problem with this phone, in fact I hardly even get over 100mb of used RAM. BTW, every ROM I've flashed has been like this, I'm hoping the stock ROM isn't like this too, its just plain annoying.
Thanks

Which rom do you want to use? You can possibly fix it with certain setting depending on which rom. Also are you just using the stock laucher that comes with each rom? Or do u install a preferred one?
Sent from my Incredible!
He's talking like he's using Sense. To be clear, are you talking about widgets refreshing like with contacts, bookmarks, locations, weather, and the like? The best way to avoid information and widgets being refreshed all the time is to use as much memory as possible all of the time. What's you're looking at is the result of garbage collection... The kernel is tossing out items from memory that haven't been used in a certain amount of time or are assumed to be "stale" information. That kind of garbage collection is set to expire fairy quickly because the first time your calendar widget waits 2 or 3 hours to update and you missed your appointment or date, you'd really wish it didn't wait so long to refresh that data. I'm not sure what can be done to avoid that being the case, but I know it's been a minor irritation to some for a long time. I'm sure if there was an easy fix we'd have seen it by now from HTC themselves. It's commonly sited in reviews as a weakness of the UI compared to iFone.
Hey there,
Was wondering if anyone has found a fix for this yet.
I am having the same problem. If I enter any app and then go back to the home screen, I get the white screen with the green "HTC" logo, then the background appears and reloads everything. It has gotten to the point that every time I open an app it needs to reload. I recently factory reset and changed the SD card to try and fix it, but no luck.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post, hope there is a fix.

I have stock sense and it happens to me every so often too. Maybe once a day so its barely noticable but I always wonder why it does it. Seems to be random and like other poster says I'm either backing out of settings or an app then the htc screen appears and the home page resets all the app icons. Only started doing this after the OTA so maybe something to do with memory management as previously stated in another post.

It hasn't done it in a very long time now. At least a week so not sure what was causing it. I did delete some apps, Netflix being one of them, that I no longer used but I never had Netflix running when it did it.
Problem was a task manager/quick launch app that turned my home button into more like an Alt-Tab. I have since reflashed a new Rom and haven't installed a task manager, and no problems at all. Must have been closing launcher causing it to reboot.
