Auto data connection disconnect - HD2 General

Helo my beloved community!
So, since the HD2 utilizes quite a lot of the data connection quite frequently (mostly for weather updates), it would be good to have an option to disconnet the data connection automatically. I presume that this is probably a registry hack. This feature can be found for example in TD2/TP2 Tools. I don't want to wait until HD2 Tolls (or Tweaks or something else) shows up (I hope it will quickly because its always something very welcome!), so maybe someone could answer quickly where to tamper with the registry to do that?
Thx in advance!

I've used an old tweak I found which seems to have done the trick, not really watched it closely enough to find out as not had time yet.
Go here: http://www.andrewsayshello.com/windows-mobile/auto-disconnecting-idle-data-connections-in-wm6/
Report back and see if it does work for you!

thanks for the reply but ive installed the cab and restarted but it doesnt seem to do anything

I just did the mentioned reg edits but it didn't seem to work. Then installed the cab to countercheck for my mistake. Didnt change the result, didn't work...
Even though I noticed the CacheTime setting existed from the start and was set to 600 (10 minutes).
SuspendResume original value was "~GPRS!"
Data charges are not so much the issue, I'm just concerned it might drain the battery quicker if the connection remains open permanently.

Try to do the regedits like this:
SuspendResume=GPRS_bye_if_device_off
CacheTime=5 (decimal)
VPNCacheTime=5 (decimal)
It works on my TD2, which to my knowledge has the same WM6.5 as the HD2 does. By the way, did You set the end call button long press to "terminate data connection"? If You did, then UNDO it

Right, You can't check it, as none of the HD2's hardware buttons are configurable Just ignore that question. Anyway, I think Ive figured it out to some point. It looks like the registry hack works whenever the phone connects to the web to for example browse the internet or update stocks. But it DOESN'T WORK if the phone connects to download weather updates. It looks like the Sense weather app is somehow preventing the data connection to shut down. But I think it only happens when automatic weather updates downloading is set.

hmm you do appear to be correct... now why is the weather app hanging onto the data session

Well, just tried setting both CacheTime and VPNCachetime and when checking mail I can confirm it works.
Thanks a lot! Mail checking schedule set up.

absolutely no idea I think someone smarter than us should try to find the answer. Ive already done a rather brief look around the registry and tried to find something that would get the weather app such privileges but with no success. Im thinking of addressing a new topic about that, so its more visible to the community

Twitter app doesn't close the data connection either

This is really annoying me. My battery was draining fast and could not find out why. Now I have found out that it is because I am constantly connected to Mobile Web on O2. I have tried terminating it but it starts again. Even after unchecking auto update for weather and twitter it still turns on and never off. I have mail set to download automatically but if i turn that off too then what is the point of having this phone and feature?
I have tried the setting in HD Tweak app to turn off data after 1 minute but noy joy.
Any help? Pleaseee.

Theres one more thing you should check out. The biggest connection-demander was always the NOT PROPPERLY CLOSED OPERA. If you use the opera browser, be sure to close it NOT with the X in the upper right corner, but through Opera Menu->exit function. If you close it with X, it only goes minimized and does not shut down the connection. Even if you close it, because opera is still running, after some time it will want to refresh a page and conect again. Thats why you have the imression that the phone connects by itsself. Thats not the phone, its opera

Also as stated, weather, opera etc will keep your data connection active...so end task and it should shut down a few seconds later.

I have installed a shortcut to taskmgr in my quicklinks - so if i see something constantly running i end task...it shuts it down rather than minimising it which is what happens when you hit the little X in most cases. The taskmgr tip is in the sticky at the top of the page.

Yes I know what you mean but you can't kill the weather app or twitter in this fashion as they run within Sense itsself. Besides, killing processes is not the point. The point is to have an automatic data disconnection, so you dont have to do or kill anything

TWO SIMPLE QUESTIONS ABOUT XDA EXEC PROBLEMS

Since installing the latest O2 ROM upgrade I found two problems:
1. Alarms and timers (chronos, spb time) don't wake up the machine. I need this feature and this a major problem for me, surely must be also an issue for others.
2. I don't want the battery icon on the top bar, I want just the clock.
Does anyone knows a trick to change for the better any of those, please?
Thanks, Gonz
1) u can install 3rd party Alarm Softwares.
2) search the forum, there is a solution

Really?
Care to post a link? Everything I've read says there is no solution yet.
Look in your startup folder, there is a file that activates the battery icon (I can't rremember what it is called and I don't have it anymore, but I seem to remember it's obvious when you see it).
Delete it (or copy to another safe location) and your battery icon will no longer appear.
OK, it seems my problems are not so simple to solve, after all.
These are the files in my startup folder:
sddaemon, services, theme refresh and voice command.
Could you tell me which one to delete to get rid of the battery icon please?
Uhm…, and what about the problem of timers and alarms failing to wake up the device? Do we have to use the dull Microsoft application?
Thanks

hdubli,
I do have lots of third party software for this purpose and they all fail with the exec wm5, something that did not happen on my xda 2i with any of them.
If you please care to be more explicit with the solutions, I am sure several here would appreciate it.
Thanks, gonz
Alarm
For your alarm problem, check out pTravelAlarm
http://www.burroak.on.ca/wm2005.html
You are looking for version 2.6.0, which is for WM5 - their site claims that it's a trial version, but I've found it to be faultless, even after applying latest O2 ROM.
It's not free and I can't promise it'll work for you, but it's worth a shot.
If I can't leave my Exec plugged into mains overnight, I disable the "Turn device off after..." in Power Settings and it hasn't failed to wake me up yet.
Its volume control isn't linked to your device's, and it's loud enough to put the fear of God in you...[/code]
I am having a similar problem. What you guys dont seem to understand, is, even if there was a $1000 3rd party alarm software, it will be of no use when the phone refuses to wake up.
The problem we have is not of the alarm software, but the simple problem of the phone not waking up, e.g. from standby to ON.
Can someone shed some light on this issue.
Thank You
This forum has not resolved the issue of the battery, hunders if not thousands of people are awaiting some miraculous fix for this. the only thing I know to work is using wizbar to reskin the title bar.
in relation to alarms, sorry, i know the wm5 is a problem. though, the inbuilt alarms that i have used on the device do wake the device up.
the other thing you can try is, dont turn it off, dont allow the system to turn it off after a period of time, and just close the device without turning off.
it will drain a little bit more power, i think approximately 15% over the night than what it would otherwise draing, but if it is plugged in, then it wont drain at all and will ensure the device wakes up.
thanks, it is probably rom related since u report that your device does wake up. Can you tell me what rom version u are using? Thanks

Many thanks, I did try not to switch it off and it works!, even the timers!
my rom is in my signature, unlike yours.
what i was saying was it wakes it up from its sleep, but not its off state.
just closing the clam was sufficient to preserve battery, especially given that at night its always charged. even during the day, i rarely turn it off. i just close the device and let it rest....

Does anybody know how to prevent the system from ticking this box every time?
My machine does it on its own, yes, it does, sometimes even after changing from landscaping view to normal.
So, the advice of not turning it off to make the alarms work is OK, but needs constant rechecking that the box remains unticked!!
Thanks,

My suggestion unrelated to your problem is to keep "sddaemon.lnk" out of the "start up" folder. If you haven't noticed yet, if you keep sddaemon on the start up folder, after performing a soft reset this file is duplicated under "Notifications" taking up your precious memory and slowing down your machine. You can check it if you have a program that cleans your Notification Que such as "Scary Bear's Check Notification" (freeware).
For the alarm one, does anyone tried using PocketWakeup? The original one is in French, but there is an English version too. Google for it and see if it works on the universal.

Keep track of data transfer (GPRS)

Is there any way to keep track of the amount of data transferred through GPRS.
I currently subscripe to 200mb transfer per month, so I would like to keep track of this or it could become pretty expensive for me

It's a good app - very basic, but does exactly what you need. If I remember correctly, it also ensures that it's always running, until you manually stop it, so if you reboot your phone when it's running, it starts when the phone boots up again.

Yeah it sure works perfectly.
Nice to be able to set the date when it's supposed to restore as well.
Actually I don't find it in the task manager, at least not as a program, so it's no risk that one closes it unintentionally, which is great. It's really super
+1

it'S a trial version ... go to "about" and it ask you for a serial number.
It most certainly is.
Well, as long as it's not a trial that will expire it works just fine for me, I don't need any other functions.
I seem to be getting red crosses in the connections is that normal?
That happens when your connection isn't active. If you start surfin the cross will probably disappear
Seems to work so far. 25kb just for email (imap4 headers) and weather update But again the problem that the connection doesn't disconnect by itself after 60sec (seems to happen when I update the weather, otherwise it seems to disconnect fine)
Did you do the tweak so it disconnects?
Remember to disable all auto-update, including weather and TIME!
Then it works with the autodisconnect.

Auto stop prog

Does anyone know of a program that will automatically end running programs after a set time of not being used.
I don't have the facility of touchscreen buttons now like with my old xda's, etc and would like to set the Snap to end stuff after a few mins of not being used instead of going through talk manager every time.
Cheers.
The HTC Dash 3G has a nice little feature that if you hit the back key 3 times it will end any running programs that have been sent to the background.. dont know if yours will do that or not but worth trying.
Nope tried that and that didn't work...

"All Settings" link in Sense, where does it point?

Hi All,
Very weird one this, I hard reset due to installing that virus (3d shoot 'em up thing here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=650393 ) and have come across a strange issue within Sense.
When I press "Settings" in the start menu (or slide across to it within Sense) I get the HTC settings menu, so far so good.
When I press "All Settings" under 'Menu' it opens the 'Connections' window, not the standard Windows settings, if I close the 'Connections' window, it returns me to the HTC settings menu.
Anyone know where I might be able to change the link, or at least find what the 'Connections' link is, so I may track it down please?

No problem.
I've managed to display the "All Settings" icon, albeit from within the Start Menu using the registry:
hklm -> security -> shell -> startinfo - change the "hidesettings" to 0.
I've found from the above, that "cplmain.cpl,19" seems to reference 'Connections', so pointing my search toward that at the moment.
Unless anyone else has any assistance?

These stories are tragic disappointments... I cannot believe everything that has surfaced from this TROJAN program. It's unbelievable... because here we thought that such a thing would NEVER happen to any of us.
I think more attention should be paid towards this issue... it's a rather SERIOUS inconvenience for a lot of people.

I have an issue with the clock as well... Ai just got the phone yesterday.
Actually, during the day at the office, the time changes several time by one hour forward... so suddenly after the time was OK in the morning, around 5 PM it showed 11 PM. What do I need to change so the time stays the same? (in the night it went back by one hour, so the alarm woke me up one hour earlier than it should have...wrrr ;-)
BSB tweaks
I am using BSB tweaks, there is option Auto sync clock - just switch off this parameter, it working perfectly. Milan
Actually, when I am at home and have athe autosync on, the time does not change. As soon as I am moving around, the time changes (even though the auto sync is off then). It seems that it changes when the network changes while moving around. When travelling in roaming this weeknd, the time moved forward by 26 hours in just one hour while travelling in a bus.

Hey kids
This was irritating me too, I assumed it was not a phone issue but, I contacted HTC yesterday & their reply is as follows, there are 2 steps to perform. I did this last night & so far the phone has been perfect:
*
*
Dear Stuart
This is not a fault with the device or its software, your device updates its time automatically from the Internet and from your mobile provider.
Occasionally there is a difference in the time from the Internet and the time from your provider which can cause the time to appear to be changing when it should be the same.
Normally this will resolve itself within a few days, however, this is very inconvenient so we recommend to disable any automatic time updates on your device.
This will not effect your sync with other things like Exchange and similar
From the Home screen tap:
Start - Settings - Data services - Time synchronization - Untick all here.
AND
Start - Settings - Menu - All settings - Personal/Private - Phone - GSM & UMTS Services - Time synchronization - Get settings - Untick all here.
Sincerely,
Adrian
