Root HTC Dream Rogers 1.5 - G1 General

Hey Everybody! I have a HTC Dream and I have Android 1.5. Can anyone direct me to a link that has instructions on how to root my phone? I found instructions on how to root Android 1.33 but not 1.5. I bought my phone after Rogers had recalled all of the HTC dream phones in late January, so I don't know if this will affect the ability to root my phone. Thanks guys!!

You have the latest update applied, so there is currently no easy way to root. An exploit that will allow us to root may be found eventually.

If I had a penny for everytime someone said that...I'd have about 10 cents. BUT REALLY, unlockr.com? Unless you've actually looked and saw a "How To Root Rogers Dream" on the site, you are NOT being helpful.
Currently there is no workaround for the 911 rogers update. I believe someone got it working they'll probably share later.

HTC Hero Telus - BASICS

Ok, got my HTC Hero Telus, but am kind of overwhelmed by the root and terms used.
Can somenoe just briefly fill me in, what does ROM actually mean and do?
I've been searcing the forums, and found a bunch of updates for RADIO on the Hero, what is this for? What are these updates for?
What's best way to start rooting, and how to learn all these ROMs, Radio, and other terms?
THANKS!
Welcome to XDA!
A ROM is the operating system on the phone. It's called ROM because it gets installed to the phone's "Read Only Memory." There are custom ROMs to replace the stock one, you'll find those in the Hero Android Development forum. This forum also has plenty of posts about how to root/flash your phone.
The radio is the firmware that goes into the phone's radio device. Generally it's best to have the latest radio version installed, currently it's the JU version found in the Official Radio ROMs link in the Hero Android Development forum.
As far as the Telus Hero itself is concerned, there are a couple threads about it in the "Hero General" and "Hero Q&A" forums. Any common problem should be tackled in one of those threads. I think I was the first one to root a Telus Hero (unless someone kept quiet about it) so I've been through just about every Telus-specific issue that has arisen. If you go through those threads and still have questions, I'll be happy to help... but please look through the forums first.
EDIT: Start on page 2 of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576826
Thanks for the response Craig, you definitely cleared it up for me.
I'm using the TELUS hero on AT&T, so is there anything different regards the root and radio update process because I'm on AT&T?

That shouldn't make a difference to the radio/root flashing process... However, I have no idea what it'll take to put an AT&T SIM card in a Telus Hero. I know it can be done, I just don't know the steps since I'm using mine on Telus.
Also, a lot of the issues that show up in that thread I linked you to are Telus-specific, so that might not help you as much as I originally hoped.
Good luck!

Using the phone on AT&T is really simple. Nothing like the complicated steps you have to do to goldcard/downgrade/root the phone. I'm using a white Telus Hero on AT&T, and didn't have any problems.
One question, though. How'd you buy it? If you bought it "unlocked" from a website like ImportGSM, then all you have to do is open the back of your old phone, take out the SIM card, and put it in the Hero. If you bought it on eBay, had somebody in Canada ship it to you, or bought it yourself from a Telus store/Best Buy/etc., then you need to unlock it first. You can get the unlock code from a number of websites, thought you'll have to pay for it. Then put your SIM card in as above and the phone will prompt you for it. After you put in the code, you're good to go!
If you want to use the internet or MMS, then there's actually one more step. You have to put in the APN settings, which tell the phone how to access the network. They can be found in the forum somewhere or by Googling for "AT&T APN".
Ya I'm using it on AT&T works fine, but I'm trying to root it but not having any luck!

Oh, ok! Sorry, I can't help you there. I'm waiting till I've got some sort of backup of the firmware that came on the phone (Or some other official upgrade meant for the North American model) before going through the process to root the phone & load a custom ROM. Just a personal preference

Rooting

Does anyone know of a 2010 version of rooting a MyTouch 3G android phone? All the sites that I've read are all from mid to late 2009 and are for other G versions of the phone.
Please help! I really like to learn how to root my phone.
Thanks in advance!!

Please read the wiki and you might figure out there is no freaking reason to have a 2010 version of rooting your mobile cause the method for rooting it was already found in 2009.
LOL, interesting post hahaha MAYBE, just maybe if you bothered doing some reading rather than looking at the year, you'd have a great start! And what's the G Version? You know, people don't look at that either. I'll give you a start, You look at 32A or 32B (You'd know this if you read the looked at ANY instructions), DO SOME READING OR DONT ROOT

[Q] Super noob needs a help here!

Mabey im not such a noob or something but i would be really greatfull if anyoen could point me atleast to the right direction. Mabey some helpfull links to help a fellow noob
Is your phone sim locked?

Mine was from vodafone and wasnt sim locked either. Ok you have two choices for root. You can either unlock your bootloader (there are many downsides and advantages to this so you should research it) or downgrade to 2.3.2, root using gingerbreak then OTA update to latest version. That way you will not loose root while updating.

What OTA Update Means? And please can you give some links on how to downgrade and root it please?
And btw if i use the method of downgrading my phone first will i be able to flash custom ROMs?

Im on my phone so i can't really link. Look in the android development section, there is a thread all about rooting 2.3.3 with a locked bootloader. OTA means over the air. Basically thats when you download and install an update using just your phone.

No you need an unlocked bootloader to flash custom roms. But please read the pros and cons of unlocking your bootloader first. And understand what you can and can't do

Ok mate just wanna say thanks a lot for your help and i really appreciate it. You really helped me out here. also just one more thing i need to know. By the looks of it the only cons in unlocking your bootloader seems to be that you will lose warranty and that your phone or your radio may get bricked which apparently can be fixed with restoring a backed up data using a program named omnius for se which i'm actually working on... however my only other concern is if there are any other disadvantages regarding the unblocking the bootloader that you happned to know of and be kind to share it with me Also just wanna say that i can see many tutorials as you said in the development section and i quite frankly i don't know which one applies to me since i realized one of the tutorials are for models with build number .184 where as mine is 3.0.1.a.0.145 AND I HAVE NO CLUE WHICH TUTORIAL TO FOLLOW. So i would be greatfull if you could lend me link to a right tutorial whenever you get free time on the PC
If all you want is root you can do that with a locked bootloader. You will have to downgrade to 2.3.2 (.184) then root then ota to get the latest firmware rooted. Follow the guide here. Or see this post i made here for easier instuctions on downgrading and rooting.
If you want to flash custom roms then you do need an unlocked bootloader like AndroHero has said. You dont need a specific guide to unlock your bootloader. Just go too the SE bootloader unlocking site (it gives you all the instructions you need) http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/. Then just flash doomlords kernel (which autoroots) or anything really from the development section (since i think anything can be rooted with one click with an unlocked bootloader) you will then have root and the ability to flash cutom roms.
Oh btw build number .184 = 2.3.2, build number 3.0.1.a.0.145 = 2.3.3 and build number 4.0.a = 2.3.3 (xloud version, the latest update)
+
If you unlock your bootloader OTA, Pc Companion + SEUS are off limits use any of them after unlocking your bootloader and you will brick your phone. Go to the dev section for the latest updates.

[Q] Anyone have AT&T rom flash?

My DVP decided to crap out yesterday for no reason. I read the "how to unbrick your phone" thread and was able to revive the phone using the TMO ffu file. It crapped out again so it looks like it's the SD card. I will be doing the flash again but does anyone have that file for AT&T instead of TMO? Thanks in advance.
It might be possible to use the TMO ffu, update to 7720, then use cabsender to send the ATT firmware bundle and turn it into the att version (as that's the only file that differentates the 3 versions)
It could also possibly brick you to the point that nothing can fix it, so I'm intentionally not posting the direct link to the files, but there are links to them if you search around for the VP on xda.

I think I'll give it a try, can you point me to the right cabsender? If it bricks I really don't care, went out and bought a Lumia 900 and actually like it. Thanks for the help.
Joey
I'm only make a (hopefully) educated guess on the whole thing, I believe there's only 1 version of cabsender(?), but it's the actual cab that i'm talking about that i'm not linking to.
Since the potential issue of permenetly bricking isnt an issue(?), look on the VP page on the xda wiki, it's listed there.

I was able to flash the phone and get it running but it shows TMO as the carrier. It does work with the AT&T sim card, so no issues.
