Will i need a data plan to activate the phone after Root? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hi i just bought a phone online, i cant activate it because i dont have a data plan, i can possibly borrow a sim with data plan, my question is after root, and after erase everything, will it ask for a data plan again? i mean like wipe everything and start again, will it be required a data plan ?

Along with the above question, I have an unlocked mytouch which I am planning to root. My question is will the phone remain unlocked after I am done rooting?

It will remain unlocked.
Almost all custom ROMs have the option to skip activation until a wifi connection has been established so no, you won't need a data plan AS LONG AS you have an sd adapter that you can use to copy the custom rom to your sdcard. I'm saying this because after you downgrade to cupcake to root, you won't be able to copy files by just connecting your phone to the computer through USB since it won't be activated.

so the two questions you are asking are these:
1. Do you need data plan to START using the phone?
Yes if the phone is not rooted you will need data plan to login to the phone, after that you are good to go. (advice from me, root the phone and install a ROM that gives an option to skip initial registration of the phone, look up syanogen mod as an example)
2. will the phone remain unlocked after rooting?
the answer is yes. I have a mytouch too and reset it several time now. I had no problem using different sim cards in it.
a side note, what ever you do not unroot the phone or you will get stuck, if you ever read sappimg.nbh in the instruction then stop cuz that means unrooting.

Unroot before taking in to T-Mobile?

Hi, I have a rooted G1 running a CyanogenMod rom and some theme or other (I think it is AeoroBlack or something like that?) Anyway, I've been having some issues with my phone being able to connect to T-Mobile's network, both the data (both Edge and 3G) and the phone signal. I've done some troubleshooting on my own and with tmob tech support over the phone, and it's at the point that my next step is to do a "sim swap." there is a very good chance, though, that I'm going to have to take it into a T-Mobile store sometime soon, either to get a replacement G1 or a new sim card. My question is, if I shop up with a rooted, modded, and themed G1, are they just going to tell me I'm S.O.L., and I voided the warranty? Even though it is still under HTC's warranty, and I have T-Mobiles equipment protection plan? My question is, if I do bring it in, should I switch it over to T-Mobile's official build before doing so? If so, is there an easy way to get everything back to the way I have it after I'm done with them, or if I get a new phone? Thanks for your help!!!
I would just leave your phone in the car and take in the sd. If the new SD doesnt fix it then I would think about unrooting it.
Have you tried doing a wipe and reinstalling your ROM yet?
When you say sd, you mean sim, right? Also, I haven't tried wiping yet, I was about to upgrade to the newest cm rom anyway, which requires wiping. If I do that, will a nandroid backup save all my stuff, or will that take me back to the old rom? I am still unclear on how nandroid works. If I install nandroid, I have to install adb, a new radio, and fastboot too, right? Thanks again for all the help!
I work for tmobile
I work in a t-mobile store and if u come in with a rooted phone I would high-five you! but u should be fine if it is just a SIM swap. if anyone asks about the theme just say it is Fresh Face or what ever it is call(it is an app in the T-mobile app pack). Now as for getting a new phone you will prob have to send it in, but for a SIM swap they shouldn't give u any trouble after the initial troubleshooting questions. Point is most t-mobile employees wouldn't know a rooted phone if it hit them in the face.
I did a SIM swap without having to remove root, but the reps did tell me they could exchange my phone unless it was running stock ROM. I had to remove root before I could get my phone warrantied.

Level 0 : New MyTouch out of the box off-of Clist... where to go from there?

Hi all!
Noob logging in here. Finally I thought of upgrading myself from Sony Ericsson Symbian S60 System to a more modern Android. So I got myself a MyTouch off of Clist.
I dont have any internet package. I wish to use the phone with my current SIM.
I have been reading for the past 12-14 hours on how to..... root, load rom, gold card, and so on.... I do understand most of the stuff.
What I can't seem to achieve is HOW TO GET PAST THE INITIAL LOG IN SCREEN, when I DONT have a SIM with access?!
Is the answer basically NONE?!
Hi there,
While on the screen with the Android, try to tap the corners of the screen in this order : top left, top right, bottom right, bottom left
It should get you right to the homescreen
Most of the dev ROMs have the option to skip the log in process when you first boot up.
just tapped on the screen as suggested, and it didn't do anything. just booted as usual. Do I need to put a SIM in the phone when I do this?
you need to order data for a day to get past the google sign in or use a friends sim hope i helped
can I flash a rom onto this phone without rooting it first. Meaning, since I dont have an option to get internet on a phone for a day, can I flash a logged rom onto this? is there such a thing or is it just my imagination? thanks.

Just booted as usual? when did you actually do it? you have to do this while on the screen where it says "Touch the Android to begin". Maybe I wasn't clear enough... there's a screenshot of what I meant on this page... but yes you need a SIM card in the phone to get there, I think.
Rooting the phone
Short answer: YES, you do need data plan; no other way. I ended up asking a friend with a SIM & data plan to finish the initial steps.
Some said the tapping method works, but seems like a lot couldn't get it through. In order to root the phone for installing custom rom, you follow the steps in here:
h t t p://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
Downgrading from 1.6 TO 1.5 and Rooting for T-Mobile MT3G
*Note: Data Plan required!
The stock ROM requires you to have a data plan, and to downgrade the MyTouch3G into a 1.5 version will NEED you to have a data plan to get pass the activation.
It didn't work for me either. Too bad we can't get around this with out a data plan. anyway....

So according to this a data plan is required through out the rooting process?

I messed up while rooting (not bricked).

Hey guys,
I have a 32B my touch 3g and I was following http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/26/how-to-root-the-htc-mytouch-3g/ this guide to root. I flashed the sappimg.npg to go from 1.6 -> 1.5. The problem is, I can't seem to activate the phone! When I turn on the phone after the flash, I get to the http://techblog.aasisvinayak.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/device22.png Touch android to activate screen. The sim that I'm using does have a data plan. I used the sim in my roomates phone and he is able to get on the internet.
When I type in my google info, it tries to connect to the server, but fails and I get this error:
"Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.
This could be a temporary problem or your SIM card may not be proivisioned for data services. If it continues, callCustomer Care."

Anyone have any clue where I should go from here?

Just skip that step and activate your wifi. After you activate wifi then connect to a wifi network and sign in with your gmail account. I've encountered this problem when I've flashed a new rom. I guess when you flash a new rom you disconnect from the network so you don't have data for a bit. Don't worry your phone will automatically connect and keep a stable connection eventually. Just be patient.
I can't connect to wifi, I'm still using the stock ROM.
What? You can't connect to wifi using the stock rom?

Unfortunately not =/
That doesn't make sense. You should be able to use wifi even with the stock rom. I'm not sure why you can't sign into wifi with the stock rom. Just try signing in a couple times and eventually it'll ask you if you want to sign in later. Then just click yes. After that connect to a wifi network and sign in from there.
The only way to register your handset is through cellular data I don't think there's away around that if your root process was successful I'd suggest trying a different rom or wiping and trying again or let your phone set for awhile maybe its having trouble registering with the network this does happen so be patient

I was in the process of rooting, but didn't get very far. I downgraded from 1.6 to 1.5, and thats when the data stopped working.
It seemed to registered, but no data is being downloaded =/
Sounds like a step was missed somewhere I would try wiping and starting from scratch and make sure your magic is a 32b an not a 32a also when yöu install your rom make sure its something stable for your version of magic

I'm using the right steps for the right version of the phone. I haven't flashed any cooked roms yet, just the standard ol' stock one.

Root Whiout SimCard

I'm trying to ROOT a Mytouch 32A without a SimCard, is that possible?
Is a friends phone and with 1.6 you can use it whithout Sim, then because it says that i have to downgrade to root, I downgrade and know im getting an error and cannot do anything becasue don;t have the Sim.
any help?
Three options. Get a 1 day data pass to sign into Google and use one of the one-click root apps. Borrow a data enabled SIM from a friend and root as mentioned before. Three, borrow a friends phone to create a goldcard and root that way.

Anyway to go back to 1.6 or another rom via sappimg.zip? the problem with 1.5 is that i cannot use or find to enable wifi, in the instalation. So im like stock on this process.
None of the stock ROMs will let you turn wifi on during the Google activation. You have to root or get a data enabled SIM.

got Sprint to unlock now how to change carrier options.

OK, I finally got Sprint to uicc unlock my phone yesterday. Now I need to figure out how to change carrier options., any help would be greatly appreciated. Also now that it's carrier unlocked shouldn't I be able to access the hidden menus and stuff or can I only do that after root?
No getting unlock didnt change anything. It just unlocked the uicc slot for a different sim. Have to get another sim and pop in phone and then you can set ur apns for that network.
Nothing else gets "unlocked" and is nothing near the access root gives you.
That's what I thought ugh. But I've tried to do that and can't get the APN to save.... I've tried to edit it with##debug# I have my msl also. And I also like I idiot purchased a unlocking app off eBay and all it was is hidden menu apk. You can add APN with that but still don't save. I inserted my Verizon sim card in the phone and it shows me roaming for service. I'm going to root my phone hopefully tomorrow afternoon. Once I do that the way I understand it that I'll be able to change and access more things. Sorry I'm a newbie when it comes to rooting, can do a lot with phones but some stuff is all new learning experience

Dont need to root.
If you have msl you can use cdma workshop or another efs program. Need to change ur prl to a vzw one. Then set apns.
Root will fix the issue with apn not saving as the hidden menue stuff needs root to activate the right menues.
But you should be able to swap prl to vzw one and put in sim and do *228 to activate. But rooting will make easier.
Root and flash a vzw rom and profit instantly lol
Quick question? i have the vs997 and i rooted and flashed the vs996 to utilize my Verizon sim. I am able to access and edit apn settings, lte and such work fine but are you saying i could flash a verizon rom to this vs997 so i dont have to use the vs996 rom with the debug kernal?

OK I'm want root also cause I want to tinker lol, I love messing with the different menus and stuff. I'm kinda nervous to root cause will be first one and don't want to make expensive paper weight.... But I ran into some issues the other day with trying to root but didn't know needed SD card and couple other things. But like other guy said I can flash the VZW ROM and be golden? Also will I pick up all the band's that VZW towers put out?
