should i disassemble to get water out? - Hero CDMA General

I got some moisture under the touchscreen and it doesn't work. Should i try to take it off to get it dried up? If yes, anyone know how to do it correctly?
Thanks.

Dissassemble it, and then place all the parts in DRY, uncooked rice. The rice will help absorb moisture

Someone who took their's apart said the screen (under the glass) had some sticky coating on it. So I would think rice would be a no go maybe compressed air.

Ahh ok. Hmm, I'd try putting it in an oven with the door open at a very low heat for awhile. I've heard from some people on a forum I used to visit that it works a charm.

Just bury it in Rice for 2 days. Don't take it apart.

Disassemble instructions: link.

silicon packets (like what you get inside of shoes and new hard drives, RAM DIMMs, etc.) are significantly better than rice. Rice gets dust everywhere
Silicon > rice

Do you know of any local places you can buy these? I know the people at bladeforums store their Carbon knives with these in them to keep rust away.

Thanks everyone.

Sure. Should i gently funnel it into the circuitry or build a sand castle for it and let it sit there for a few days?

Ive noticed you just have to be very clear for some users around here.

But when you go ask for silicon they might look at you funny, what you are actually looking for is "silica" the deseccant..

Make sure you keep the door OPEN, and the temp LOW a toaster oven would be better, and set the rack as high as it can go. I'm guessing since the case on this phone feels so tacky it must have a low melting point.

Moisture just dried but screen still not working... could this be a software issue now?

i had this happen to me a few years ago when the psp first came out. but i had split alot of soda on mines. I just had put it by the fan and let it dry it over night. Came back in the morning and it was working great. But you can see water marks in the screen.

I dropped the slippery little sucker into the bathtub last night... took it out, popped the battery out, dropped everything into a gallon ziplock baggie full of rice.
fired it up this morning, it initially went into the bootloader for some reason, i rebooted and it came up fine! everything works!
bag of rice, it just WORKS!
Congratulations.
Why the hell were you using it in your bathtub? I'd never put my phone near large amounts of water like that!
Nice big screen, soapy bubbles... Light some candles, you could have a good night if you know what I mean
haha... in my defense, i had just returned from an out of town business trip, and on my way thru the airport to the car, i turned my ankle, so i was filling the jacuzzi tub to soak my ankle, had the phone in my hand as i leaned over to turn off the water.. wasn't exactly thinking clearly.

Really man? I suggest trying to meet some Turkish or Iranian chicks then. Muy caliente!
These phones are notorious for not surviving "swims", but lately I've been hearing otherwise. For instance:
A buddy of mine has a MT3G and while leaning into the backseat to do something for his son, his phone slipped off of his lap and into his girlfriend's large sweet tea from McD's. He didn't even notice, for several minutes, until he took a sip from said tea.
His phone was floating in tea for minutes, and the only thing wrong with it is the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore. That's it.

My wildfire is dead! :(

I ****ed up today!!! Forgot to empty my pockets and now my wildfire is in the washinmachine! Couldnt stop the f-ckin machine and watched my clothes in a 60min-programe. When finally the program was finished, the stupid lid could not open. And I were in a hurry to get to my workingplace. Now the wildfire is in the washingmachine until I come home.
Probably the phone is as dead as Michael Jacksson!
Is there any way maybe to rescue my phone after this treatment? Hairfan? Oven? Element for drying?...something?

should I only put the battery on the heatingelement? or the whole phone?
Should I maybe wash it in water first to get rid of eventually rests from the machine? (sorry for my swedish-english writing here;p)
Ouch, nasty. After a full cycle in the washer I wouldn't hold much hope but it is worth trying the old rice trick.
Take the battery out of the phone and put the phone in to a bowl (or bag) of UNCOOKED rice (it doesnt really work if the rice is cooked lol) and leave it overnight. The dry rice soaks all moisture out of the phone making sure it is completely dry without heating it up (and possibly damaging it more).

Just put the phone in a bowl of dry rice at room temperature and leave it overnight, or maybe even a day or so. The rice will pull the water out of the phone without any need for heat.
should I just put the phone on the rice or put the rise under and over the phone? So that the phone is covered on all sides, lying in the middle of the bowl?

Or you take pure alcohol and soak it
(few hours, but very IMPORTANT >99% purity !)
Afterwards dry it for several days <-- do not heat it, just dry it
Disclaimer: Works since it is pure simple chemistry, but I never dared to do it so far
If the rice method doesn't work, and if you got some experience in electronics, try opening your phone up and look if any vital components are harmed...

Will try the rice first, sounds less risky
The only problem with soaking in alcohol is that it can dissolve any glues used within the phone itself. But if nothing else works it might be worth trying as a very last resort.
Seriously it will not do any harm as long as you really use 99% + purity.
The problem is remaining humidity leading to oxidation (corrision) of your contacts. Alcohol is a solvent and therefore water free. It will "take up" the humidity and afterwards evaporate.
I guess the major problem is that exept for me not a lot of people here work in a laboratory and have easy acess to a liter of 99,99% pure alcohol.....
isnt there anything called batterywater? Maybe that workes? Think I can buy that on statoil and similar places?

Just dropped Atrix in the toilet. FML.

Knocked it off the counter while washing my hands.
What do I do? I'm freaking out right now, I picked it up as soon as it fell in so it wasn't in the water for more than a couple seconds.
The water marker thingy turned red and I shook the phone and I can hear water inside of it. I dried it out the best I could and pulled the battery immediately.
Basically without this phone, I'm dead.
Please help!
Put it in a vat of rice for a long time (maybe even a week) DO IT NOWWW.
placing it in the rice is a good idea, it absorbs water pretty well.
could also try to take it apart piece by piece and absorb the water with cotton swabs.

if you need your phone sooner, take it apart piece by piece. use cotton swabs to absorb the water, and isopropyl alcohol to clean up any contacts after you finish drying it out

I guess I'll leave it in for 48 hours. Should I put it in the sunlight?
Also, how bad is it that I could hear water inside the phone when I shook it? At least I wasn't using the bathroom..that would have been awful. I think I would've just trashed it if that was the case haha.
Another question, should I attempt to take my phone apart?

only if you're comfortable with taking electronics apart. the trickiest part is to get the screen out without trashing your digitizer. if i dropped my phone in water, i would do the rice trick and then take it apart afterwards to make sure every bit of water is out of there.
as long as you don't try to run a current through it, i.e., turn it on, all things you can do will help.
Many have said, "Take it apart." Your phone, your risk, your call.
That said, I sure would!
Okay well I just realized I don't own a T5 Torx ScrewDriver. I think I'll probably just let it sit. How long do you guys recommend? Is 48 hours enough or should I wait longer? And should I leave it outside in the sunlight? Omg I'm still freaking out, so much of my life is on that thing. D:
EDIT: Also, what do I do with the battery that I took out and the sim card? The battery wasn't too wet but the sim card had some water on it that I dried off.
I'd keep those in the rice as well, just to be safe.
the battery and sim card are solid state components, simply drying them off should do fine.
So how long do you recommend I keep it in rice and should I keep the container outside in the sunlight?

Enegry drink + tf101 = A bad situation

Hey everyone
My poor transformer has seen better days, here's the deal
I had a can of energy drink in my bag and it decided to open its self and left a puddle of liquid at the bottom of it, sadly that's where my transformer was. after a few hours of drying with a hair dryer I turned it on and surprisingly it turned on and is working fine other than the left hand side of the screen is now brighter the then the right (here's a picture of the screen https://www.dropbox.com/s/ci6m1y4abh8n0z6/IMG_20120731_113759.jpg). I rung asus and apparently gonna cost $300 + nz because they only replace the whole LCD panel which is far to much. touchscreen, volume rocker(volume rocker side got wet) etc all work fine (Im typing this off it now). Just want to know if anyone has any ideas about fixing it .
Cheers

Im gonna probably try claim insurance on it so anythings worth a try atm lol
Is it worth claiming insurance (then getting an insurance raise) vs getting a new one if it is broken? Good luck, I wouldn't dry it with heat... just soak it in rice because the rice will soak it up..

Yeah gonna see how much excess etc will cost first, hair dry was making slight progress which is good but i'm trying the method here (http://chathuraw.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/rescuing-a-water-damaged-laptop-display/) hopefully ill see some results, id do the rice method but i believe only a small amount of liquid managed to get in, there just seems to be a bit of moisture on the back of the LCD panel.
Definitely try and get it open, possibly give it a rinse. The sugar and crap in the energy drink would eat away at bits you don't want to be eaten away.
If you were in Dunedin I'd do it for you, had my 101 open a few times, and recovered lots of stuff that's had **** spilled on it

Well you could try it with alcohol. I do it quite often with water damaged phones.
You turn the pad off open your TF101 - here I have to mention that I have never open a Transformer so I can't help you with that - if possible you remove the battery, protect the display and brush the damaged parts with something high in alcohol content (my drugstore has a 98% ethanol)
The idea with distilled water can help sometimes but I experienced often that it just worsen sharply

Tip for new owners to prevent water issues

My phone took a full submerge in toilet few weeks ago. Immediately took out battery wiped it dry. Took out Sd, sim, battery, screen protector. Wrapped 8-10 thick socks with phone. Put it in with a load of clothes in dryer. Make sure clothes are dry.
I mention all this because I've saved 10+ people's phones with this process. Got it from youtube video and was surprised it worked. Doesn't work well with phones with no detachable batteries.

Yeah that's definitely true. I can't stress that enough to peopleā€¦.Take out battery immediately after getting wet! The rice trick never seem to work for me.
I forgot to mention in the dryer thing. Usually 30-45 mins on medium heat. Make sure the phone is pretty cushioned with socks. Phone might get warm/hot in dryer. Wait 20-40 mins before trying to put everything together and power on.
Also one more important thing I need to mention to everybody. When your phone gets pretty wet. The sticker on your battery will change colors. Aka Phone company won't fix future issues. Happened to my cousin. My girlfriend had same phone and same issue. So what I did is order battery on amazon and Switched out. When her phone had an issue later on, they fixed it.

Yeah I never had issues. I figured at the time I had nothing to lose. Factory warranty won't cover water damage. It cost an arm and leg to have them fix it. So if you don't got anything to lose give it a shot peeps?
Heat and static pretty much. Now static I was a lil worried about. But it never gave me issues. Maybe because it's insides not really xposed and so many socks block it out idk? I never used fabric sheet with this fix, but I don't see it hurting anything.
Like I said before didn't have much luck with phones with no un-removable battery. But only tried that on two phones. Maybe future next phone you have luck?
Most the people I know who got it wet was with water. If you spill with any sticky stuff: Soda, beer, etc. This should still work. But maybe you would have to worry bout future repair hassle? Because that sticky stuff not going away. They would see that in phone probably and no fix from them.
Okay last one sorry just trying to help people lol. Some people said they used 99% isopropyl alchol submerged. Dried out for few days in rice submerged and dryer. They did all that because of sticky spills and what I mention above. The alcohol washes it away.

Okay last one sorry just trying to help people lol. Some people said they used 99% isopropyl alchol submerged. Dried out for few days in rice submerged and dryer. They did all that because of sticky spills and what I mention above. The alcohol washes it away.
