Upon activating Verizon's Advanced Calling (VoLTE), my ability to use an alternate dialer app on my Galaxy S5 seems to have been disabled. I'm guessing they do this because Advanced Calling requires the stock dialer. When I realized this, I removed Advanced Calling, but I still can't use an alternate dialer. I can punch in the digits in another dialer app, but the stock dialer pops up to complete the call.
I've tried clearing defaults and installing a bunch of different dialers, but no luck. I even tried Skype -- strangely, I can choose that as the default dialer, but none of the actual dialer apps I installed show up in the "choose an app" dialog -- only Skype and the stock dialer.
I'm assuming this is some kind of software change that came with Advanced Calling, but I can't seem to reverse it. Am I stuck with wiping the phone or something?
Did you also turn off advanced calling in your VZW account?

Yes, I removed it from my account, rebooted the phone (several times), and verified that it's deactivated both online and in the phone.
Maybe try clearing the cache from recovery?
I don't know if we keep a list of this anywhere, but I wanted to drop in what I found installed on my VZW Prepaid Moto E LTE:
I definitely probably want to start freezing some of the Verizon ones. I know they lock some crap down, have some apps that remind you that you don't have a Verizon SIM installed, etc.

I just disabled the apps I didn't use (like NFL) and such. Nice to know I can do that and not have to have extra apps in my app drawer.
Would there be any way to download these files on my non-Verizon unlocked Moto E 2nd gen 4G LTE?
Or at some point flash a Verizon Moto E 2nd Gen ROM onto my Moto E 2nd Gen 4G LTE?
This is what I've successfully accomplished to date. I had an active LTE SIM with Verizon tied to my grandfathered unlimited data plan. I put that in my Moto E 2nd gen. For about 5 seconds I could connect to Verizon LTE only then I would get no service. So I was unable to get a permanent connection.
How I successfully connected to Verizon LTE but not voice/texts or 3G:
Next I called Verizon spoke to a Tier 2 Technical Support person. He put in a support ticket to add my IMEI to Verizon's DMD (device management database). It took ~24 hours for me but can take up to 72 hours.
The next day (again approx 24 hours later). I entered *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer changed my radio settings (which seem to default to GSM/LTE) to CDMA/LTE (prl).
Then I was able to connect permanently to Verizon LTE network. On my account my device came up as non-VZW device.
My current problem:
I can't get voice or texts or 3G service because I cannot connect to Verizon 1xRTT and EVDO network.
Some background about what I've researched on how to get connected to Verizon 3G and 1xRTT which are both part of Verizon's CDMA network:
-Google tried to open source factory images of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. But Verizon owns closed source CDMA binaries and to read these you need to have a "platform-key" that is issued by either the manufacturer or Verizon- I am unclear which entity issues the key.
Source: Google group with responses from Google employee on the Android team. I can post this link later.
-Option 1/ Problem: Can't work around the CDMA binaries/platform key so one can't get on Verizon CDMA
The other situation I am aware is that there are 3 distinct FCC filings for the Moto E 2nd Gen 4G LTE. The model numbers are XT1528 (Verizon) and XT1527. But the three FCC IDs which mine is IHDT56QC1 has not been approved on the CDMA spectrum.
-Problem/Option 2 the XT1527 does not support CDMA natively nor cannot secretly support CDMA in nvram like the Motorola Luge situation. (This can also be googled)
What is the real problem and is there a work around to get my device on Verizon's CDMA?
Any way to unlock GSM bands on XT1528
Network band choice shows only 4GLTE/CDMA. Is there a way to unlock the GSM bands? Looks like all 4GLTE Verizon Phone are capable for GSM (and they do have SIM card slot). However, the choice is disabled.

Verizon postpaid usually has GSM unlocked, but the E2 is only available on Verizon prepaid. Probably doesn't even include the GSM 2G/3G bands.
Hack to unlock the GSM
I know @acadiel is looking at getting the Verizon version GSM radio unlocked. Please share any development on that front.
thanks
There is no hack necessary

Hello there, currently there is no "hack" to be made on the phone. Verizon cannot lock 4G LTE devices, period. No matter if they are prepaid or postpaid. to use any SIM card simply go to the Google Play Store and search for "Network". Install that shortcut and select "LTE/GSM (Auto PRL)". Insert the SIM you want and then go to cellular settings and for network type select "4G (Recommeneded)". Then set up the phones with the right APN settings and BOOM, youre done. :good:

Is there any way to do this unlock thing and have it stick permanently? I read you have to repeat the steps every time you remove the sim.
Am stuck with that phone failed to unlock it.
Hi all! So I had owned iPhones for a long time and one thing I loved about them before I switched is the visual voicemail feature. I hate having to call into my number and listen to each voicemail individually. I heard there was talks about possibly including this feature into Android M but I can't seem to find it. Is there any applications that you can recommend that does this feature? Thanks for any help in advance!!
Your carrier probably has an app. AT&T visual voicemail works for me on unlocked HAM2 even when I was running CM12
This is the solution i found - use Google voice for voicemail, then there is a setting in google voice to have it show in the phone app under the tab for voicemail.
Just use this to make it happen.
how about for verizon?

I got it working on T-Mobile. Go into the phone app, then the menu options in the top right -> Settings -> Calls -> Voicemail and click the visual voicemail toggle. They show up in an additional "tab" in my phone app.

yes from what i've heard it's only working for tmobile right now,the carrier has to support it. i have a bad feeling as a verizon customer i'll probably have to wait until android m is on a samsung galaxy phone and that's when they'll be willing to support the feature.
Is there a way to get TMobile advanced messenging and built in video calling in the dialer on the unlocked model? Is there a way to get the built in digits onto the settings as well?
I have a US996 and have been on A-O ROM, android version 8.0, for over 1 year. My voicemail notifications worked fine.
I recently reset my phone and went back through setting up Google on it and restoring my apps and all. Now if I miss a call, I have to check to the voicemail by calling *86 since there is no longer any notification sound or notification indication on my phone.
What setting am I missing to get those back?
(No, I never used Verizon's Visual Voicemail or any app like that. And I have not made any changes to my Verizon account recently).

Thank you for your reply.
I'm on the US996 using the A-O US996 ROM. I'm not on a Verizon ROM. I'm not after the Visual Voicemail. And I don't see voicemail.apk in the ROM anywhere.
I'm just after the notification when I get a voicemail. Then I can call in the *86. But I don't want to have to guess if I have a voicemail and check it without there being one.
I'm using the LG phone app. In it, I have the settings for Voicemail as :
Service: My carrier
Setup: *86
Notification Sound: (one I chose)
South with vibration: on

I personally have the visual one installed and when I get a notification for a voice mail, I click on it and it takes me to the visual one, then I listen and delete ect. As for location it might be in the priv-apps in system folder of extracted. I'm also on stock Nougat, but same for RR-pie.
I didn't see the voicemail.apk in the Rom. Perhaps because it's not a Verizon based rom. My phone is the unlocked, not Verizon based.
If I were to find a voicemail.apk, would it work on the non-Verizon like that?

This is mine on Nougat from stock based classic rom. It might work for you. I found in priv-apps folder in the vtt-Sprint folder. Yours may be in same area near bottom of list. I am not sure tho because I am not on that rom.
That won't work since I'm on Verizon. I didn't find any VTT apk or anything in the ROM.
I'm sure it's a setting or something I'm missing doing.
I just wish I knew what I was forgettng to turn back on.

I thought AO was Verizon based. Did you try the us996 or vs995 version of rom?

Try the vs995 if available for it since you are on Verizon.
So, coudln't get the "Visual Voicemail" to work.
I don't need it to work. I just need the notification when I get a voicemail. Then I can check it manually.
Does anyone know what setting i'm missing to get the notification for a new voicemail that I need to check manually?
