OHAI N1 on att now - Nexus One General

so before my ebay auction gets finished, anything you guys want me to compare with a side by side with the tmo one?
also, anyone have suggestions on how to really really wipe the thing? isnt there a recovery partition or something that can be run? im aware of the factory reset setting but does that really wipe stuff or is that just set settings back to defaults?

A) Can you compare network strength? (The exact dBm on both phones when side by side)
Open up Settings -> About Phone -> Network on both phones sitting side by side.

B) Hold your hand around the bottom of the AT&T N1. How much dBm does it lose?

how is your connection?
Do eaxactly what paul outlined.
A co worked just got his nexus one. And we been playing with it for a few minutes and it is affected by the spotty connection that plagued our tmobile devices.
Care to chime in on this?

can you please:
-take a picture of the label on both phones (under battery cover behind the battery)
-Boot into booloader mode and psot the info at the top?
-Check if it has dust under screen?
-List generally anything you notice different from tmobile phone?

just sitting on my desk in an office building where all phones have terrible reception i get anywhere from -87dbm 13 asu to -100dbm
picked up with hand around the bottom it goes to -97 or -110
this is probably a bad test since the connection at my office no matter the phone is bouncy like that.
build number epe54b

no dust under the screen but it just came out of the box
ill play with it some more when i get home, not much i can do while at work

one on the left is the att band n1

Interesting that it ships with a 'leaked' ROM on it.

hmm the at&t phone has a screw on left side while the tmobile does not, and some other minor differences.

nah theres a screw there, the dude i asked to take the picture had a bad angle on it, i'll take one with my nikon when i get home. there isnt really that much differece at all, except that ada standards marking there.

-81 db directly outside my office in direct los of the tower, held my hand over as if i was talking on it and started bouncing between -87 and -93 and -97
i still think that tower is janky, almost everyones cell works poorly at the office

Hmm so not much change.
And it looks like they are shipping the AT&T with the newest radio, the one that was "leaked" just a few days ago hah

both gadgets are set to "best performance".
What do you think? I think, it's very frustrating....perhaps they forget to impelement the antenna. that could be the reason why the GPS isnt very good also.
I think this proves nothing.
The bars are a subjective indication. You should try to see if both devices can work from an equal distance to the Access Point. You should also take into account that you usually hold the device in an upright fashion, which may or may not improve signal. (If you had both devices laid flat, can't see that..)
Besides this, the rates are not equal, which influences signal reception.

Both devices laid flat on my bed, side by side.
I hope, you are right. How can i easily check out, if the wlan of the hd is weaker then the wlan of the hermes? Can anybody make some comparing-tests with "old" devices to confirm or disconfirm my "test"?

Go away from the access point until the signal is very low. Check which one is working or not by browsing the same site on the net. Get farther step by step until the weakest gives up.
I would say both are equally good.

I hope they are equally good, I hope to have mine tommorow and my heart skipped a beat since I use wlan a lot.
I sold my Hermes, the comparison is not possible. But at home, the HD Touch seems a little less efficient than the Diamond Touch in its best version, which I tested in several Rom and ROM radio configurations. The difference is really insignificant. should be tested with another device ...
Not so bad
Post some screen shots of speed tests done on both in the same place if you can.

I'll compare the HD with the Hermes and Kaiser later. As far as I am concerned the Hermes sucks ass and I doubt I can even get it to connect to the wireless, it never used to hold the connection, the Kaiser was much better and the HD is on par with the Kaiser.
guys, this issue has already been discussed in another thread. i will mention it again here.
using a software to judge the wifi performance is not the correct way: i can write you a cab file that has all the nice graphs to display the wifi signal, but if it displays WRONG, it doesn't mean the actualy wifi is bad.
i blieve this is a UI problem, ie. displaying weaker bar when the phone gets a decent signal. if you really want to compare the two, download the same file from the same server with two phones at the same spot, and see which one grabs it faster (time it or use third party app downloader).
my HD can still surf and download very fast when the config screen shows NO green bars.

Do Vibrants Have This?

Captivate owner here... Do your Vibrants have these contacts on the back?
The Captivate cover is made of metal. It is suspected that these contacts are antenna but we don't know for sure...
Anyone with a Vibrant care to post a pic or let us know about your device?

nope. none of that... pic coming.
No but what we do have is one antenna to the right of the Sim Card. It's probably for GPS, WiFi and BT. I can snap a picture if you want. The Captivate probably does use the back as an antenna because you don't have what we have.
Doesn't appear to.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
nope nothing like that
but thanks for the idea, and the shot of that optional antenna lead socket next to the sim card - mine has the plastic plug over it and was meaning to pop it to get a look at it
question - is the entire caseback metal or is there a metal band embedded in the plastic?
Yep, I'm an artist
Are you guys having problems with the metal back?
No problems, just curious what the heck it's for...

are you sure?
here's a better shot of what heygirl is referring to
that round plug cover, next to the bottom end of the sim card at the far left in the image, that well the plug is covering was identified in that dis-assembly video as the "optional" antenna" socket -that was the only reference to that optional antenna i've seen but, that would confirm what heygirl is indicating, that that is our antenna
but, then why is the radio signal on everyone's phone appearing to get weaker when they shield the bottom end with that "death grip" on the bottom end?
the area under the first three arrows (starting on the left) seems to be covered with a pc of black vinyl with adhesive, with the antenna, if that's what is there, underneath
there's also a well with a metal pin in it under the last arrow to the right - i'd be curious what role that plays or offers
it would be interesting to see the vibrant & captivate dis-assembled side by side and see what's interchangeable - iand if the at&T antenna setup could be used in the vibrant to upgrade signal reception?
That's for a lanyard.
The phone's cellular antenna is at the bottom, this isn't the cellular antenna.

Pretty sure. It's definitely not plastic and makes a metallic ring when dropping it down onto a glass table.

Signal / Reception poor

I'm on my second X8 in two weeks, the first kept losing signal and dropping calls in places where my cheap work phone would show good signal. O2 my provider were very good and swapped it but the new one is exactly the same!
I've done a bit of net searching and found a few folk with similar issues on the X8 but not huge numbers. Anybody here have this problem? found a cure for it?
I think those magnetic things you put under the battery to improve signal are pure snake oil so won't go that route but without a solution I'm going to have to send back the X8 and go for another make. No point having a phone that can't make phone calls.
that is the weird problem..
it's diffence for me, my phone is better signal if compare with other's phone.
in my experience, have you used the battery/energy saver? it could impact the signal i think. more u reduce the signal/battery, more poor the signal u would received..
When I first got this phone, it was fine, reception wasn't a problem. But a month later, my reception is terrible and it's really hard to connect to the internet, I can only do it in certain places. Where as before I could do it anywhere.
I'm worried I might have damaged the 3G aerial when I dropped it that one time.

I have the same experince like 2 above. The signal is better than on my other phones
So the problem is unique, not common in all X8
It's not a battery issue, I keep the phone well topped up and it even happens when the phone is vehicle mounted on charge. I drive a lot and use the phone a lot, there's an area on one of the routes I take about a mile long where there is no signal at all, the X8 loses reception much sooner and gets it back much later than any other phone I've used (i.e. 2-3 mile area). This makes me think the antenna is not very good or is blocked somehow by the phone body.
It's a shame, I like the phone, I know it's cheap and I was happy to accept slow performance / lack of features but in every respect it works well, it's well built and looks good. I just can't trust it not to cut me off mid call.

Inaccurate GPS, can't get an accurate fix

Recently I realized that I can never get an accurate GPS lock anymore.
My phone can lock to the satellites, but it never get can accurate fix.
You can see that in this screenshot:

}
As you can see it's locking to seven satellites but the GPS is inaccurate, even after a few minutes, it would never get an accurate fix (the accuracy/error would still be 50ft or so).
Is my GPS broken or what? Can anyone help me on fixing this?
I dont know about this app, but is there an option to clear GPS data and download new data after?
If you can't get an accurate fix even after this, I would propose for you to install another Rom to be sure that it's not a software problem.
If the problem continues, then probably its a hardware problem.
Yes, there is an option to do that, it doesn't change anything though. I'd try going completely stock when I'm free but I'm quite sure this is an hardware issue.
Anybody know where's the GPS located inside the phone? I suppose there's something wrong inside that makes it lose contact or something.
And If I had to replace the GPS, anybody knows how much it is? I feel like taking this to the service center but I'm out of warranty now..
Any help would be appreciated!

the gps is located inside the soc. it is essentially part of your cpu, so no it cannot be change. there is maybe another way, using a headphones cable to solder it on the gps antenna (if you can find it) so you can get much better signal. i have done it on another phone and worked like a charm BUT i had instruction how to do it.
P.S. keep in mind to get an accurate signal you have to be in an open space without buldings on the side. if you have buildings on f.e. the right side the gps will lock only on satellites on the right side and it will give you quite an error. this is a personal observation of mine from a trip on the mountains. i had very high mountains on the right and the gps was always telling me i was about 10 meters left out of the street.
Hmm, my area is a quite dense though, not much tall buildings, just houses, but it's quite dense (and I had that screenshot from the balcony on the 2nd floor, so I can safely say I have a clear view of the sky)
Do you think that my GPS is actually normal? I wanted to try the aluminum foil method though but I haven't got the screwdriver to open up my phone yet.

if you where on the balcony it might be ok. try to lock on an open area, or at least on a road where you have open sky. or better try to lock on the roof of your house! keep in mind that non-military gps systems has a small error usually in height

No Service & really poor signal and possible intermittent connection....solutions!(H910 H915); also potential ghosting fix

the story
------------------
bought 3x v20's off ebay, the first was a crap refurb that lost imei and hasn't been able to do anything radio related since rooting; but I kept it for parts cause nothing was turning up on ebay for a decent price.....bought another from a seller that had a H915(I'm in Canada and this is the Canadian model) with what looked to be a cracked screen(not LCD), claiming it powered on and worked but was being sold for parts...... when the H915 arrived I was surprised to see that it actually wasn't as bad as I thought, just really dirty, scratched up but not cracked; goal was possibly Frankenstein something but first test it all out..... few days later Grade A H910 shows up at a reasonable decent price and couldn't pass it up
I end up with 1 dead parts phone, 1 scratched up rust bucket that keeps connecting/disconnecting, and 1 pristine H910.......essentially 2 parts phones and 1 presumably perfect phone
first day the new H910 roots fine, connection is solid, figure I'll try flashing it's modem to the H915 see if that solves the unstable connection and it did!!; so that makes it so all that's wrong is it's a bit dirty and needs a new display!...... the H910 a day later stops getting service and I narrow it down to a weak signal like issue(post what's on the bottom as a possible solution); in the meanwhile I figure I'll swap out boards between what was the pristine H910 with the H915 so that I'll have 1 of 3 phones functioning fully....... finish assembling and I have the same no service issue; I had swapped the end caps between the H915 and H910 since they looked cleaner, so swap em back and we're back in business; appears the end caps(antennas) seem to not be functioning correctly for whatever reason.....
while I was in there I noticed that there was a dab of dry thermal paste(pink wax type, similar to what was used in pentium II era??), I tried initially to replace it with random arctic silver 5 clone but there's to much of a gap between the ?CPU/GPU?(copper bit shielded portion), so settled on using a piece of a thermal pad that was meant for M.2 flash drives...... runs cooler, most ghosting is gone; suppose it will still happen if the phone warms up(gaming/etc); bit surprised they settled for paste, and more so that variant considering the gap and these being a mobile device that gets a lot of movement
summary
- if you have problems with no service indoors, 3-4 bars signal strength, with a unstable connection outdoors..... it maybe the end caps; 2 of 3 phones functioning.... waiting on new end caps from aliexpress
- if you have a problem where service jumps around between connecting and disconnecting(battery drains quicker than should seem normal), either try the universal modem(https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=962021903579496199) or modem from a H910
- if you open your phone throw a thermal pad in for cooling, should resolve ghosting a bit(pretty sure what's in there has long since stopped doing it's job)

outdated stuff and symptons
-------------------------
bought a Verizon H910 off ebay in near mint condition, rooted fine, worked fine.... day later it gets a signal but has "no service" while inside(Rogers H915 gets signal just fine under the same scenario)..... serch networks shows up RAT: Rogers LTE along with everything else that I think should be there; at first I thought this was maybe something relating to root, so I redid that with no improvement, flashed back the original dump via adb in twrp and still same issue.... last ditch effort I went outside and toyed with it and it did work but behaves at though there is a really low signal despite there usually being 3 or more bars~.... anyone have anything like this occur; any suggestions??? kinda confuses me as the thing was working fine(thought maybe the imei had become blocked or something as a possibility but I think the idea it barely works outside rules that out)
this seems to work, not too confident with the idea I have to take this route but eh(pics from the original source; did similar using copper tape on a h910)
