Do Vibrants Have This? - Vibrant General

Captivate owner here... Do your Vibrants have these contacts on the back?
The Captivate cover is made of metal. It is suspected that these contacts are antenna but we don't know for sure...
Anyone with a Vibrant care to post a pic or let us know about your device?

nope. none of that... pic coming.

No but what we do have is one antenna to the right of the Sim Card. It's probably for GPS, WiFi and BT. I can snap a picture if you want. The Captivate probably does use the back as an antenna because you don't have what we have.

Doesn't appear to.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

nope nothing like that
but thanks for the idea, and the shot of that optional antenna lead socket next to the sim card - mine has the plastic plug over it and was meaning to pop it to get a look at it
question - is the entire caseback metal or is there a metal band embedded in the plastic?

Yep, I'm an artist
Are you guys having problems with the metal back?

No problems, just curious what the heck it's for...

are you sure?

here's a better shot of what heygirl is referring to
that round plug cover, next to the bottom end of the sim card at the far left in the image, that well the plug is covering was identified in that dis-assembly video as the "optional" antenna" socket -that was the only reference to that optional antenna i've seen but, that would confirm what heygirl is indicating, that that is our antenna
but, then why is the radio signal on everyone's phone appearing to get weaker when they shield the bottom end with that "death grip" on the bottom end?
the area under the first three arrows (starting on the left) seems to be covered with a pc of black vinyl with adhesive, with the antenna, if that's what is there, underneath
there's also a well with a metal pin in it under the last arrow to the right - i'd be curious what role that plays or offers
it would be interesting to see the vibrant & captivate dis-assembled side by side and see what's interchangeable - iand if the at&T antenna setup could be used in the vibrant to upgrade signal reception?

That's for a lanyard.
The phone's cellular antenna is at the bottom, this isn't the cellular antenna.

Pretty sure. It's definitely not plastic and makes a metallic ring when dropping it down onto a glass table.

Paint chipping on battery cover

I just noticed today that paint had started to chip off my battery cover right next to the power button. My phone hasn't been handled roughly, so I'm not sure what happened, but that whole area chipped off just recently. Now it's starting to bother me...

Notice the two chips directly next to the power button slot.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any ideas for touching it up?
I have two small chips on the bottom corners. I have been debating putting a tiny drop of crazy glue or maybe clear nail polish on the spots to keep the area from continuing to flake away.
I used to own a Volkswagen that had the same soft touch material all over the interior controls. It looked great and felt high end, but it would always peel off. The following model year removed ALL soft touch from the interior for this very reason. It just doesn't hold up well.
Its only a matter of time until it happens to our phones. Enjoy it while you can!

Happened to me to (on the bottom).
Got fixed when I sent the phone in for a replacement (for another issue)
It gives the phone some character like Stevie ray Vaughan's guitar...
My proclip car mount put 2 chips in either bottom corner of my phone
I actually have an extra battery cover. I had bought a new one cause the clear plastic "lens" for the camera cracked. Unfortunately the new cover didn't come with the lens.
If u call HTC they will send u a new battery cover for free

The hole next to the Flash...FACTS!

I found out today after taking apart my DHD's (one is north american ATT the other is from softbank Japan). The hole IS NOT just for easy access to the cover, there is in FACT a second microphone for noise cancellation, I know this was a hot topic in the past and it is true. I know because one of my phones has it and the other does not. In fact i've been told numerus times that people can hear alot of wind noise with my Softbank DHD, I never had this problem with my ATT handset.
As you can see the little black box is missing form my Japanese Phone, at the bottom of that is a small microphone

Sh*t,my sim-free DHD doesn't have it...Oh well,I'll survive!
Nice find though man!Well done!
I don't have one either However, no one has complained of background noises when I call them.
How do you remove that cover? Mine is always bulging out.
Nice find.
My DHD doesn't have this second mic and my girlfriend is always complaining of background noise when it's windy outside.
I have it <3
That's actually a really cool feature, I am glad to see HTC putting something as simple as that in, that I am sure would actually have some effectiveness without adding much cost.

If you have the hole its as simple as inserting a pin and turning towards the left until the cover pops. DO NOT turn toward the right or you WILL snap the cover.
If you DONT have the hole, its a lot more difficult (I scratched my phone) but you need a VERY thin flat head screwdriver to insert into the right side of the cover and ply SLIGHTLY to get a little space *jewlers would work great* then get something larger so you dont bend the cover, pry SLOWLY until the cover pops off.
WARNING: I find this very difficult to do without scratching your phone.
PS. The reason I pulled my cover was to clean the gps contacts and bend them upward for better contact. It worked great for me so if you take your off, do yourself a favor and do this.
On one of the disassembly videos, they used a tool from inside the battery slot to push it off from inside, I certainly wouldn't attempt to remove it without a very good reason.
do you think it is possible to identify the part and retro-fit one?

Honestly no.

Just recieved a replacement N7, anyone else have these stickers and a red dot?

I just received a replacement N7 from J&R. My first N7 didn't have the round stickers on the left corner or the white sticker on the front face, only the main sticker with serial# etc on the bottom. I also noticed a red dot on the white sticker that's on the front face of the box.
I haven't opened the box yet, these extra stickers make it feels like its a refurbished product or return.
Anyone else receive a box like this?

Most likely it is a refurb unit. I work in a RMA department and it's standard practice to label repaired devices with stickers and dots like that.
That said, there is absolutely no reason to reject a refurb unit. Most often the refurbs are of higher quality than new devices because they've been QC'd at least twice. Anyone who rejects refurbs on the grounds that some or all of the parts might have been touched by another person previously has no idea how electronics and QC works.
Errm, or a checked stock unit.
It's highly likely Asus have been through current stock checking for screen lift or whatever, and marked stock as they go.
I want to second the past two peoples responses to your issue.
I went ahead and opened the box. It appears that this was either used or repackaged. The plastic cover that covers the screen was obviously handled before, since I see creases and marks. The plastic bag that holds the power adapter looks like it was scrunched up, obviously used before.

I would expect it to be faultless then. How is the device?

Opened back housing, what do you guys think this metal "clip" is there for?

I was replacing the back housing of Nexus 6p to change up a little for fun, for the second time. The first replacement took place a month ago, from silver (OEM) to black. Since the black housing is scratched quickly without a case, I bought a white one, which came in today.
Upon inspection, I found this metal clip right above the camera cutout (shown in the picture below, it is from my OEM housing) to be missing on the new/white housing. Do you know what this thing does, and if absent, will it pose any issue using the phone? I thought it could be antenna connection at first, but then I found many other small clips stemming out from the board instead of the housing, so I thought those might be the antenna connections. Then what does this clip stemming out from the housing do

This is the clip supposed-to-be from my OEM housing
This is the clip broken piece from the new housing I got.
That clip connects to a contact above the camera as seen on ifixit teardown

Yes, any idea what purpose it might serve though? I have put the housing on anyway, just fear that it might cause some functionality issue down the road.

any kind of connection as such, using a spring clip, means its meant to get signal from A to B. In this case, it seems is something that may use some soft of radio signal.
anything like that missing a connection will surely affect something (is there for a reason)

Help! One metal contact on mainboard gone! What exactly are inside the lower bumper?

As shown in the photo, the second contact from the right on motherboard , next to the earphone port, now has come off (although it is OK in the pic). It should connect a metal contact in the lower bumper and act as some antenna. But what exactly?
I tried to cover the lower bumper with hands, which makes NO difference on LTE and 2G signal (but 2g looks like not very good itself). Neither 2.4 or 5 wifi . While 3G reception could be compromised, but not cut off.
At the moment, nothing obviously wrong has been noticed after the damage, but I am still very upset and would like to know what specific function or antenna that contact is responsible for. Best it was no big deal.
Thank you in advance.
By the way, disassemble it gently if necessary. Do not pinch it with fingers, otherwise we might end up on the same boat.
Check Android pay functionality as I believe that may be the contact points for your NFC antenna. Mine were bent and I had that issue until I was able to bend them back (was dicey).

Thanks for the tips. Yet in my case the NFC has been working fine. So there might be other issues involved.
I'm not 100% sure which contact you're talking about, if you could circle it on the photo that might help. I know that some of the gold contacts on the back of the handset connect to the metal rear cover and are for RF and EMI shielding. Perhaps if it's one of these you won't notice a huge difference in functionality

Just like this. Please check if you can see.
Yes, there are loads of contacts inside the back cover. But this one cant be discovered unless you dismantle the lower bumper by unscrewing.
