Recently I realized that I can never get an accurate GPS lock anymore.
My phone can lock to the satellites, but it never get can accurate fix.
You can see that in this screenshot:

As you can see it's locking to seven satellites but the GPS is inaccurate, even after a few minutes, it would never get an accurate fix (the accuracy/error would still be 50ft or so).
Is my GPS broken or what? Can anyone help me on fixing this?
I dont know about this app, but is there an option to clear GPS data and download new data after?
If you can't get an accurate fix even after this, I would propose for you to install another Rom to be sure that it's not a software problem.
If the problem continues, then probably its a hardware problem.
Yes, there is an option to do that, it doesn't change anything though. I'd try going completely stock when I'm free but I'm quite sure this is an hardware issue.
Anybody know where's the GPS located inside the phone? I suppose there's something wrong inside that makes it lose contact or something.
And If I had to replace the GPS, anybody knows how much it is? I feel like taking this to the service center but I'm out of warranty now..
Any help would be appreciated!

the gps is located inside the soc. it is essentially part of your cpu, so no it cannot be change. there is maybe another way, using a headphones cable to solder it on the gps antenna (if you can find it) so you can get much better signal. i have done it on another phone and worked like a charm BUT i had instruction how to do it.
P.S. keep in mind to get an accurate signal you have to be in an open space without buldings on the side. if you have buildings on f.e. the right side the gps will lock only on satellites on the right side and it will give you quite an error. this is a personal observation of mine from a trip on the mountains. i had very high mountains on the right and the gps was always telling me i was about 10 meters left out of the street.
Hmm, my area is a quite dense though, not much tall buildings, just houses, but it's quite dense (and I had that screenshot from the balcony on the 2nd floor, so I can safely say I have a clear view of the sky)
Do you think that my GPS is actually normal? I wanted to try the aluminum foil method though but I haven't got the screwdriver to open up my phone yet.

if you where on the balcony it might be ok. try to lock on an open area, or at least on a road where you have open sky. or better try to lock on the roof of your house! keep in mind that non-military gps systems has a small error usually in height

The battery door on my vario II won't come off when I use the release button. Can't remember ever noticing how the clasp/mechanism worked, could somebody either describe it or take some photos so I can see how to remove the back door without doing any more damage?
Thanks
James
Is the vario II door the same as the TyTn door ? I can't remember, if it is I can describe and get a picture within half to 1 bour.

Thank you! Though it doesn't look very good for finding a way to release the door without damaging it. Does it look possible to you?

No it does not look easy. Does the little catch still slide back and forth easily on its spring?
Mike
yes it does.

This I think is bad news cos looking at the one I've got the back off at the moment, if the catch just slips out of engaging the white sliding catch mechanism then it gets really stiff. BUT there is a tiny prong on the black sliding catch that engages the white sliding catches!! (Sounds like this may have broken off, allowing catch to move freely because it's not engaging with anything.)
1. If it's under warranty I'd take it back and have a battle about whether you were "rough" or not, or whether their catch is crap.
2. You could prize up back cover. Not a good idea I think the back cover prongs will snap off.
3. Just dont't take back off!!
4. I think it may just be possible to remove the one screw (Torx) you can access with the cover on. Prize open the case just a fraction to allow a pin/needle to be used to slide the catch and release back. With the device face down you would need to pass the pin through above the central part of the catch and move the pin from right to left. You could in theory wthen completely remove the back housing and examine the catch.
Mike
hmm...well had a brain wave and gave the phone a bit of shake. Something inside definately rattles! On closer inspection it also appears as if half the clasp is working - moving the release switch makes the door move a tiny amount.
So it looks like i'll be going into t-mobile and seeing what they say!
Thanks for the help (I may need more if i can't get it replaced!)
Solution and slight embarrassment...
So, nothing was actually wrong as such!
I had been finding that my battery was getting hotter than I was happy with, so I had removed the sticker from the front of it to allow the heat to dissapate more efficiently. This had left a sticky residue on the battery which had stuck to the battery door.
So that's me feeling a bit stupid!
Just pleased it's problem solved - good news
Mike
Hi guys, I appreciate that this may not be the correct Forum but I get alot of knowledge from this site so if you guys dont know, no one will!!
My Xperia optical pad/joystick is having a mare...each time i rub my finger over it, my X1 trys to dial out and skips to menus. The phone has apparently become "moist" acording to the Vodafone shop (Which to me seems like an excuse)
I ahve wiped the device back to factory settings and the same errors keep happening. I have turned the Opt Pad off in settings but the pad still reacts to touches and just jumps though menus and try's to make calls!!
Is there a way that I can get this fixed or resolved or has anyone else got any ideas. This may be a hardware fault.
Thank you all.
Well I can imagine dust being behind the scroll 'wheel'. How about you try to blow it out with a can of compressed air?

Hi,
Thank you, I have used a can of air and this seemed to make little difference.
Maybe I could get the device apart and give it a pro clean although I feel the actual joystick me be capput :/
Other ideas?
Thanksagain.
Moist? The only way I can see a phone becoming moist is either from a bit of rain or sweaty hands. Either way, phones are designed to withstand this otherwise they would be completly useless for outside use..

I have the same issue. It does seem to happen more when I have been using the MobiPocket Reader to read a book for a while ... maybe my sweaty thumb is causing the issue ;-)
Seriously though, if this is really true about moisture I may have to trade my X1 in, it drives me nuts when this happens.
Is there a way to clean the optical joystick properly? (I'm going to try the air-from-a-can idea as well)

Nah, AutoScroll just irritates me , get distracted for a second and you lose your place.
I've resorted to using 'tap the screen to go to next page' option. Seems to work well BUT the point is the X1 shouldn't have this issue.
Vodafone have offered to 'repair' it for me, since it's still in warrenty, but it means sending it away for 10-14 days and in the meantime they can give me a 'loaner' which will of course be a peice of crap (I'll just use my TYTN).
Update:
I have found the issue! After looking on Google I came across a YouTube video of how to dismantle and reassemble the X1.
Turns out one of the transistors on the Optical pad circuit board had become slightly coroded, so I cleaned this up with a small soft brush and a minute drop of meths and put it back together and BINGO!
Also while the screen was out I left it overnight in airing cupboard in a ziplock bag with a pack of Sylica(Spelling) Gell.
Search YouTube for: "Xperia assemble Front/Back" User; CKY1
Hope this goes to help someone.
Cheers guys
in my case, I just adjusted the joystick to lower sensitivity...It worked without surgery..
so technically vodaphone was right. and it was a moisture problem.
so before my ebay auction gets finished, anything you guys want me to compare with a side by side with the tmo one?
also, anyone have suggestions on how to really really wipe the thing? isnt there a recovery partition or something that can be run? im aware of the factory reset setting but does that really wipe stuff or is that just set settings back to defaults?

A) Can you compare network strength? (The exact dBm on both phones when side by side)
Open up Settings -> About Phone -> Network on both phones sitting side by side.

B) Hold your hand around the bottom of the AT&T N1. How much dBm does it lose?
how is your connection?
Do eaxactly what paul outlined.
A co worked just got his nexus one. And we been playing with it for a few minutes and it is affected by the spotty connection that plagued our tmobile devices.
Care to chime in on this?
can you please:
-take a picture of the label on both phones (under battery cover behind the battery)
-Boot into booloader mode and psot the info at the top?
-Check if it has dust under screen?
-List generally anything you notice different from tmobile phone?
just sitting on my desk in an office building where all phones have terrible reception i get anywhere from -87dbm 13 asu to -100dbm
picked up with hand around the bottom it goes to -97 or -110
this is probably a bad test since the connection at my office no matter the phone is bouncy like that.

no dust under the screen but it just came out of the box
ill play with it some more when i get home, not much i can do while at work
one on the left is the att band n1
Interesting that it ships with a 'leaked' ROM on it.
hmm the at&t phone has a screw on left side while the tmobile does not, and some other minor differences.
nah theres a screw there, the dude i asked to take the picture had a bad angle on it, i'll take one with my nikon when i get home. there isnt really that much differece at all, except that ada standards marking there.
-81 db directly outside my office in direct los of the tower, held my hand over as if i was talking on it and started bouncing between -87 and -93 and -97
i still think that tower is janky, almost everyones cell works poorly at the office

Hmm so not much change.
And it looks like they are shipping the AT&T with the newest radio, the one that was "leaked" just a few days ago hah
I'm on my second X8 in two weeks, the first kept losing signal and dropping calls in places where my cheap work phone would show good signal. O2 my provider were very good and swapped it but the new one is exactly the same!
I've done a bit of net searching and found a few folk with similar issues on the X8 but not huge numbers. Anybody here have this problem? found a cure for it?
I think those magnetic things you put under the battery to improve signal are pure snake oil so won't go that route but without a solution I'm going to have to send back the X8 and go for another make. No point having a phone that can't make phone calls.
that is the weird problem..
it's diffence for me, my phone is better signal if compare with other's phone.
in my experience, have you used the battery/energy saver? it could impact the signal i think. more u reduce the signal/battery, more poor the signal u would received..
When I first got this phone, it was fine, reception wasn't a problem. But a month later, my reception is terrible and it's really hard to connect to the internet, I can only do it in certain places. Where as before I could do it anywhere.
I'm worried I might have damaged the 3G aerial when I dropped it that one time.

I have the same experince like 2 above. The signal is better than on my other phones
So the problem is unique, not common in all X8
It's not a battery issue, I keep the phone well topped up and it even happens when the phone is vehicle mounted on charge. I drive a lot and use the phone a lot, there's an area on one of the routes I take about a mile long where there is no signal at all, the X8 loses reception much sooner and gets it back much later than any other phone I've used (i.e. 2-3 mile area). This makes me think the antenna is not very good or is blocked somehow by the phone body.
It's a shame, I like the phone, I know it's cheap and I was happy to accept slow performance / lack of features but in every respect it works well, it's well built and looks good. I just can't trust it not to cut me off mid call.

As shown in the photo, the second contact from the right on motherboard , next to the earphone port, now has come off (although it is OK in the pic). It should connect a metal contact in the lower bumper and act as some antenna. But what exactly?
I tried to cover the lower bumper with hands, which makes NO difference on LTE and 2G signal (but 2g looks like not very good itself). Neither 2.4 or 5 wifi . While 3G reception could be compromised, but not cut off.
At the moment, nothing obviously wrong has been noticed after the damage, but I am still very upset and would like to know what specific function or antenna that contact is responsible for. Best it was no big deal.
Thank you in advance.
By the way, disassemble it gently if necessary. Do not pinch it with fingers, otherwise we might end up on the same boat.
Check Android pay functionality as I believe that may be the contact points for your NFC antenna. Mine were bent and I had that issue until I was able to bend them back (was dicey).

Thanks for the tips. Yet in my case the NFC has been working fine. So there might be other issues involved.
I'm not 100% sure which contact you're talking about, if you could circle it on the photo that might help. I know that some of the gold contacts on the back of the handset connect to the metal rear cover and are for RF and EMI shielding. Perhaps if it's one of these you won't notice a huge difference in functionality

Just like this. Please check if you can see.
Yes, there are loads of contacts inside the back cover. But this one cant be discovered unless you dismantle the lower bumper by unscrewing.
