Looks like HTC is considering creating their own smartphone OS:
http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=5814
Good idea or a bad one? I vote bad since it does nothing but dilute the market even further. And while their Sense UI on WinMo may be buggy because of the fact that it runs on top of WinMo, it's not encouraging to see that they haven't found a way to fix the problem with their text messaging app after all this time.
And who will write apps for that OS?
This thread needs a poll
Bad Idea.
Android is too new to just write it off at this point in the game. I know it has its issues, but I personally think it's the future.
Windows Phone 7 is brand-spankin' new. I don't like it, considering all that I've heard about it. Like how they plan to lock it down. But if they can get a decent app store up and running, they could be competing with Apple very quickly. Never count Microsoft out. Google made that mistake and now look at Bing.
iPhone OS 4.0: Apple pretty much just granted 90% of the wishes that people harbored. Sure, it's still locked down, but my friends swear by their iPhones. Personally, I can't stand 'em. I even gave my 2yo daughter my iPod Touch (2nd Gen), no joke.
Maemo and Nokia are now in bed together, which means that Android is in for a world of hurt, at least in Japan and Europe.
Too many cell phone manufacturers roll their own OS. This is always a problem with people like me, who want to be able to control their phones.
If HTC were to release the OS source code, I would be happy to give it a shot. Unfortunately that only happens when the OS is based on an already-open system, like Linux
.

Ack, looks like I can't add it after I create it. Perhaps a mod can add it for me.
HTC is currently believed to be the leader in the pack of companies that are expressing interest in buying Palm, now that it's officially accepting offers.
WebOS is a great operating system just looking for some proper hardware and market penetration...and we all know who has plenty of both!

WebOS, under proper management and direction, and coupled with HTC's literal hardware design genius could be something I'd consider serious potential competition for Android.
I just saw on the news that Andriod has surpassed iOS and blackberry's OS for most used OS on smartphones.
Congrats to google and all of the awesome devs that made me want to get an android phone!
Edit: My news channel sucks, after reading up on it, the report that was released showed Android as being the most popular purchased in the last six months. While not quite as impressive, it looks like we're making headway on Apple and Blackberry.

Not really. It just became the most bought. Blackberry/iPhone is still #1/#2 in the US by about 10-12% (~31/28/19% - BB/iPhone/Android). Internationally (where the iPhone is available on multiple carriers) the gap is bigger. It's definitely growing though.
Edit: Just to be clearer, the numbers show that in the US people are leaving Blackberry, the iPhone is staying pretty constant, and Android is growing. So it looks like Blackberry (probably from Verizon/Sprint/T-Mo) users are moving to Android. And if Verizon gets the rumored CDMA iPhone (which is available in China now), it'll probably change the dynamics (Verizon Blackberry/Android users => iPhone) since iPhone retention among users is really, really high.

The iPhone has been selling like crazy for years now. It's base of users are much larger than Androids. Right now the iPhone stands at 28% of the US market share, Android is at 19%. People have recently started buying more Android phones than any other type of phone, so it's still less but it's growing. Get it?

Not necessarily, being most bought doesn't make it the most used, it just means it's growing. You can have 2 million BB users, 1 million iOS users and 500K Android users. Android is selling 3/day, iOS 2/day and BB 1/day. While Android is growing the quickest, it's still third in the smart phone market.

Well no, (yes) but you can transfer it to a wide variety of hardware manufacturers and carriers.
For instance, here is an incomplete list of where you can take your apps either now, or in the future.
Acer
Alcatel
Apple (oh right, android works on the iphone too)
ARCHOS
ASUS
Dell
Garmin
HP
HTC
Kyocera
Lenovo
LG
Motorola
MSI
Nokia
Panasonic
Philips
Samsung
Sharp
Sony Ericsson
ZTE
Or you can take your iOS apps to the following places:

I still prefer android over anything apple even considering the paid apps. The android market is still growing and eventually there will be some sort of quality control much like how apple does their market.
As for paid apps, it's no different than buying games on an old phone and then not being able to use them anymore after getting a different phone.
Also, you can't beat the 24 hour refund period. I don't backup paid apps and then refund but it has saved me money refunding apps that did something I could already do. Bettercut is a recent example. My wife wanted to use some icons from the market but it couldn't be used without bettercut. The icons were free but not the app. I just hit refund and showed her how to use custom icons through launcherpro.
Apple doesn't do that. In fact, I remember when the apple market first came out an app was sold for $5+ and it was nothing more than a red button that did nothing. People literally got robbed on that one.
Yay another thread about how Apple does everything wrong and Android does everything right./s

It might be the same OS but the selection is HUGE compared to Apples. Like the guy was saying, you have 10+ carriers with android; motorola, HTC, and samsung all use custom UI's. The processors, internal memory, ram and other hardware features can all be changed over different makers on the changeable OS.
For the iOS you have Apple, old version with an old UI and one with a slightly new UI. Which will probably stay the same over the coming years. There is no other company making the phone so what it comes with is what you get and the OS wont come any different (customized) then the other Apple phones being released. That is until they release another version.
Ah bless. It should eventually produce some truly boring phones. Nokia should have gone android IMO? We will have to wait a long time for a Nokia Nexus N!

Symbian and meego are to be 'sidelined' according to BBC news so a swift kick to the nuts is in order. They putting all their chips on MS.....what an exciting partnership. I am sure apple are already living in fear
I don't get it.
I think Microsoft is a mistake, but if it works out it will benefit both sides.
It will be interesting to see what this will yield.
On another Note I see Meego can run Dalvik Turbo.
It seems to be something similar to Wine for linux, but for Android on Meego.
Basically you can run Android apps seamlessly on Meego.
I want to post link but I can't yet. So the Source is Linuxfordevices.com
Title is: "Dalvik ported to MeeGo, promising instant Android app compatibility"
With this development, I think they should have stuck to what they were doing, and made a deal with google to allow Android Market on their Meego Phones.
I understand there would be some sort of premium for them to do that, but damn that would be awesome, it might have killed android.
As much as I love Maemo for it's Multitasking capabilities, I don't like the provided Market on it. Not to mention Qt for Meego.
I hope they still release a Meego device.
Peace.

This decision definitively benefits Microsoft more than Nokia. MSFT gets a great handset maker with international market. Nokia gets.... a new OS. I think Android would have definitively been a better choice.
I just think this partnership will produce some very dull devices that are locked down to the extreme. Now if they put some good Xbox functionality in a device.....that might be interesting.

Win Mobile looks OK, but it's not my kinda thing, i would rather Android/Meego/Maemo anyday!
Symbian was good in it's day, it's just a bit "old hat" ...it for me is hard to fathom how they could make that maemo device and then stick with symbian as a main platform, lost respect from me for that alone!
I hope to see them thrive though, even if i will not buy the win7 devices, ALL mobile companies (inc. google) could do with the kick up the arse that comes from competition, any competition, is good for us all i say!

I look at it this way:
When the iPhone was released it was absolutely, bar-none the best, easiest-to-use, most powerful smartphone on the market. It offered a device that anyone could jump into and use without much of a learning curve and as a result it gained a huge amount of market share. When the G1 launched it brought open-source and entirely different UI that allowed users to truly customize their phone experience. It took Google a bit longer but then started to take away from Apple's dominance. Now we have WP7 and I ask myself, what new or interesting features does it bring? You can't copy and paste, you can't customize it, you can't even add storage and the UI is basic and bland. I guess its sort of cool that it has the XBox live support, but that would only be a cool feature to XBox owners and I sold my XBox to get a PS3 because I was tired of paying Microsoft just to watch Netflix which I was already paying to watch. Besides, what is WP7 except Kin with a little more power? And I'm sure I don't need to explain how that worked out.
So to continue my line of thinking, Nokia made the wrong choice. I've seen no real sales figures on WP7 and I know one person who owns one and he happens to work for Microsoft. Actually, my sister's boyfriend who also works for Microsoft owns a Droid X so not even all their employees believe in the platform. Nokia is continuing its history of hitching itself to a wagon with a broken wheel. I was looking forward to Nokia Android devices but I won't lose any sleep over the loss and I won't lose any when they announce bankruptcy in a few months or years.
even the iPhones needs to accommodate the competition now

Nokia would have been way better off with Android
To us not in the Nokia boardroom it does seem a strange partnership. I mean we could all have told them that apple is king for most 'casual' phone users with android gaining general recognition and acceptance to. MS windows I really don't think will generate any excitement among the masses. Kev is right....what will they bring to the party? I guess accountants in crisp suits may be attracted to a windows device but would many under 25's be interested in MS office for mobile 2011?

Really, this is the best outcome for us, Android users.
Why?
Because this will trigger more competition, which will result more innovation from Google Android and Apple iOS (major players on smartphone. No RIM is not )

I don't think Microsoft is much competition to either iOS or Android and I don't think either side sees them as such. Their market share, last I saw, was pathetic at best. I would prefer there was more hardware competition than software and another manufacturer pushing out high end hardware would have been just that.

Apple is good at claiming they made it first. The first GUI was by Stanford Univ. Plus the mouse was not an Apple invention either, Tablets were not an Apple invention BUT.......... Apple is very good at marketing and providing the central use applications that most will use and makes those very user friendly.
But as far as innovation, and being first, just not factual.
Besides that imitation is considered flattery in some circles, Apple has to go with the market or die off Just Like Nokia is currently.

While true, and I HATE apple's marketing gimmicks, I still think that the iPhone and the iPad were innovative. I'm sure most people who used a smartphone prior to the iphone will agree. The same goes for tablets, most of them just suck and are plagued with OS issues. I'm sorry but Windows wasn't meant to be on a tablet.
I wasn't claiming that apple invented the wheel. I'm saying that apple took the wheel, made it easy to use, look nice, perform great, and gave everyone else a formula to follow. And they did.
But back on topic, yes they all steal ideas from each other. They have to.
I just hate Apple because they act like everything they make is like the second coming of Jesus.

I hate the apple fan-boy who believes it. Back when I had my G1 and ATT was airing those commercials that would show apps and say "only on an iphone" I would yell at my tv because my G1 did those things too. Their marketing is brilliant because they target un-tech savvy yuppies. You'd think other tech companies would spend a little dough on marketing.
A guy in my office was trying to tell me that his iPhone4 has an unbreakable gorilla screen (lol @ gorilla screen). "So, OMG I can drop it on the floor and it wont break" as said in a very flamboyant voice. Me being me, I had to burst his bubble. "Uh, it's still just glass, it'll break".
I do love my iPad but there's plenty of room for improvement, and I didn't pay for it so I get a pass.
Apple themselves have had a rocky history, but have had some good products.
The IPOD really did make apple rise from the dead if you think about it. Before that they were doomed for dust, and not a kid on the planet cared to have an apple computer. Now everything is Apple mania, with everyone buying Apple computers also... For what reason you'd use a Mac is beyond me?
Linux or Windows are both so much better than whatever OS apple is using these days.
But honestly HERE IS WHY APPLE GETS COPIED!!! Think about it... First the IPod... the largest MP3 player with that cool circle track thingy it was just so convenient. Then... Why not make it a phone too? So out comes the IPhone. Now the IPad.
I think the idea really behind the IPad and now other tablets like it, are for it to eventually become the next laptop. Todays laptops are big and bulk, and we have to start somewhere. I give it not to long and you will see bigger tablets, with faster processors, able to play games, and probably even run Windows 7.
Apple isn't dumb, but the Android OS makes their Iphone look like ****. All I gotta say is.. Got widgets on your iphone? Nope!
Apple is kind of like the "standard maker"
It sets a standard and then its competitors try to beat it.
Thats how life is, and thats how the world goes round.
In the end, its all good for us consumers. We get tons of options.
Patents on small things like the "slide to unlock" i admit, are stupid, how else can you freaking unlock a phone?
They copy each other, polish it, and make it their own.
Tbh, Windows shouldn't even have gotten into the Phone business, i mean their their popular, most percentage of humans love em' and use their computers.
They should have stayed at building their OS better, and simplified, Windows IS complicated for someone who doesn't know **** about tech.
They need to also make their updates more simplified, my old PC if i try to update it using Windows Updater or something it says i have to update 4000 something files.
I left my computer on for 2 whole days, i usually don't leave it on over-night unless if i'm downloading something important and big... and in that 2 days it updated like ... 20? files..??
I'm on windows right know though
Every company can be sued for their whole freaking company. It's called setting a Precedent.

Ie10 - most mobile websites are programmed to use WebKit.
Rooms - useless unless everyone has a wp8 device
Wallet and NFC - useless
Work flow and voice - been out for years on android
I'm very disappointed in wp8. It is in no way competitive. I have an iphone5, galaxy s3 and htc 8x. The 8x isn't even close to the other devices. And no I'm not a troll. Only someone talking from experience.
Major fail Microsoft. Wp8 is totally uncompetitive.

Why come here and post about it? that is considered trolling. We like it, so don't care about your opinion.
WP8 has a lot of going for it. They need more app support, then it can go head to head with android.

The op asked for opinions. Microsoft also asks (even if they don't listen) for opinions. Expressing an opinion different to your own is not trolling.

I like the kids corner thing... really its multi user mode. I just don't think it is a bullet point for 99% of consumers. I watch parents hand their phones to their kids for entertainment every day. Its a nice feature to have multi user environments but needs a better selling job from ms. Think "risque photos on a girls phone, being handed to dad, to make a phonecall" , yes , there is a win.
The features that other phones have had aren't really a huge selling point, if wp just implemented them. It comes across as 'me too!'
If people dont notice the new home screen, its not "new" enough. Having to point out that a puppy has "really floppy cute ears, see !" Means they aren't a big deal, or aren't floppy or cute, or NEW enough. That part is painful to watch. I really felt sorry for the salesman in the wp videos on youtube.
If noticed though, that the latest youtube channel videos are playing on the "smoked" promotion idea. Sending a text message 3 seconds faster (or other very practiced objectives by the host) is a yawner now. It was funny at first with 'smoked' but the stacking of the deck spoiled the fun, people resented it. Guess Microsoft's advertising dollars are learning, and persistant, even to a fault.

You're delusional. You also obviously are missing the entire point of a mobile experience. They can all have the same features across the board, the implementation is the key focus here. Windows Phone is a joy and ease to use. iPhone is extremely simple to use, but the potential and implementation of it's features are a headache. The ONLY thing that those other two platforms may have over Windows Phone is the marketshare and mindshare to utilize their potentials. Once specific WinPhone8 apps begin to come out, and I mean REAL apps utilizing the new developer features, then you'll see this come to the forefront even more. Android can clean me after a bowel movement, doesn't mean it isn't the most inefficient OS ever created, REQUIRING multiple cores to even be close to the fluidity of Windows Phone. I got honest with myself and said "do I really need the ability to install multiple file explorers on my phone?"

edit... wait a second, they all have the same features ? really ? cmon man, its ok to be a fan, but that's rediculonk.
don't worry, android is peaking now, and wp or ios will have 70+ marketshare next. that should be just in time for wp9 or 9.5
will wp be ready, or will ios whoop em again ?
C'mon ohgood, your reading skills are better than that, I said "they all can" focusing on the fact that the experience is the main issue. WP does not lack in any necessary consumer feature
Sent from my Nokia Lumia 920 using Board Express
You don't have to have wp8 device to use "rooms" It's coming to android & ios also.

ahhh, "they all can" as in a comparison, not "they all do". sorry, I missed that the first time. gotit.
the rest was "chicken before the egg, which is first" as far as developers go. I was serious in the question as to whether wp9 will be ready when android share starts declining. the developers and mindshare needs to be priority number 1 right now at microsoft campuses.
given past quotes from microsoft, wp8 was in develope
ment when wp7 was released. hopefully wp9 is well underway, tiles have been rethunk, along with opening the platform up and feeding devs everything NOW. (sorry for the run on)
might be a good idea to keep all these wp8 early adopters in mind too... hard to get folks to walk across the same burning bridge twice.
Mate even i have an iPhone 5

Used a GSIII for about 26 days, it was easily the worst experience I've had on a mobile device. Before you ask yes it was on the stock AT&T ROM. Bloatware everywhere and applications wouldn't be in alphabetical order. It felt unorganized and not uniform to me, I must have OCD and require theme colors lol.
Personally found myself using my phone a lot less when I had the GSIII then when I had my Lumia 920 in just the day to day of whipping it out and messing around with it. Also Skype never worked consistently on the GSIII that was a real pain.
In a side note most reviewers said you have to use two hands on the 920...I single hand it constantly with no issues whatsoever. Guess my hands are freakishly strong or I'm not a little girl.

Apps in alphabetical order on the S3? Tap menu, view mode, alphabetical. Done. Should have read the manual.
Bloat ware? Load the standard rom. Done.

This is why Android sucks. You should never make such a significant change for your device to work. Never.

Kids corner - great feature with two kids in the house using our phones to play games
Ie10 - useful and will grow
Rooms - useful with growing number of friends and family owning a WP8 device
Wallet and NFC - useful
Work flow and voice - finally on WP and so much better than on android
I'm extremely satisfied with wp8 and the numbers and sales show that it is and will be very competitive. I used an LG Quantum and what a delight the Lumia 920 is over that. And yes, I am a troll and I am someone talking from experience.
Major move Microsoft. Wp8 is totally competitive.
My point here is that your opinion has nothing to do with decent evaluation. Just using the word "useless" to describe a feature's downside is pretty useless.
cheers

you mean, removing oem installed bloatware is a bad idea ? say it again, OEM INSTALLED BLOATWARE, not operating system bloatware. remember all those laptops / desktops that came preinstalled with norton, from the store? did microsoft install that mess, or did the oem ? hmmm
