This is my email to HTC.
"Hello Sir/Madam
You must be getting this a lot, but there is no news on your twitter feed about this problem. I own a HTC Hero and due to being stuck on 1.5(cupcake) I am unable to download a lot of new applications for my phone. Is there a reason we are not getting timely updates? I have not had this problem with my iPhone.
This is making me regret moving over to HTC, if this is the level of service I am to expect in the future. I cannot understand how you put this quote on your site " HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience."
Please give a set date on Twitter or reply to my email address, if we are to expect a update and a confirmed date.
It is a shame about the level of service with the phone, and will be a shame if I have to move away from android because of no updates.
I Hope you do reply( even if it is just sorry we cant help you, just to show you have read this)
Hoping for good news Modo Albans (currently an Hero fan)"
And this is the response I got.
"hi
Thank you for your enquiry.
You will need to put the 1.6 rom on your phone to make allow the apps to work.
this is on are web site.

I would respond to tell them that hero does not have 1.6
Good old HTC perhaps they should outsource there software support to XDA
Email them back saying there is no 1.6 ROM available for the HTC Touch G2 Hero.

Check out that shocking grammar! Guy should get sacked.
That is a generic response I would expect from someone like that. They will not be caught unofficially announcing a release of 2.1
I have a funny feeling they doing it to suprise people unless there is major problems with this ROM on this type of phone. Lets just wait and see who knows we might be in for a suprise
The update wil never come. They want you to buy a new device.

Does it mean we're gonna get 2.1 very soon?
Can I just point out, this guy says he is testing Hero 2.1 on a G1. Therefore if tested upon a Hero device we may still come across problems of WiFi/trackball/Bluetooth etc. not working.
Well if G1 devs are kind enough to share it yes.
Twitter is alive with talk of the Hero 2.1 rom atm. Lets just hope one of them kind G1 Devs let "LoxDev" have a copy to play with
benocharm got a bite, but I haven't been able to reach him on twitter to pass along the info that I have. My username is jnwhiteh pretty much anywhere, gtalk, gmail, twitter, etc.

leak but it is htc based.
The rom comes with HTC applications, while google applications have to be ported
Thanks. Nothing posted seemed to be really clear about that. It seems like there are some conflicting things being said. KingKlick makes it sound good and ready, while Paul O'Brien said that it is nowhere near completion.
This is so exciting!
Btw lol @ people running it on G1 They need to share that sh*t with Lox_dev, not run it on their G1 and say that it's unstable
(@ Lox_dev, I'm still donating should you ever equip 2.1 with vanilla android aps )
Guys just forget about it. The man who has it said he can't share but ota upgrade coming soon according to him.
Seems he can only share it with some G1 devs...................... But they say they can't share it too.

That is so lame, sounds like they actually don't want people with Real Heros having fun , lol.
Should I ever receive a G1 firmware, I hereby promise to only share it with Hero owners
And thanks in a way lox_dev, you working on 2.0 (alpha1) is what made me not go through with swapping my hero for a g1.
But back on the G1 devs not wanting to share the Hero firmware.. that really is a *****-move..

Well let's not get *****y now.. at least they're giving us a bit of info. Perhaps they just don't have the trust of us to not spread it around. Hopefully they're about right and we get an OTA update soon!
over the air meaning a update coming from the HTC Site ?
Just been talking to HTC Support about a problem with my Hero. I also asked them about the 2.1 update and she said (and I quote) '...the 2.1 update will be an over the air update which will be for T-Mobile and unbranded Hero's and will start on 30th April. Other operators will follow later. This is for the UK, other countries will have different release dates...'
So guys, another one to add to the mix.
Now don't start flaming me for posting this and don't acuse me of lying - I am merely passing on what HTC told me today.
well I guess its better news this time since its promised date is getting shorter each time they mention it (ie its not like next month or whatever they keep saying).
Not hold my breath anyway - bit the bullet a couple of weeks ago and installed villianRom 5.2 - seems to work well with a few glitch but nothing to cry home about.
I won't accuse you of lying but nothing will be set in stone until an official date is confirmed in a press release.
So I hope its true, but chances are it will get hit my more delays.

My god if there wasn't those posts the hero forum would be rather dead..... i mean i had a wimo phone before, and there were plenty of usefull posts, interesting apps, etc. and for the hero, except from some posts very useful for newbies like me (rooting, flashing radio, adb manual...etc.), nothing really interesting !!! Again and again the same posts..

I just took a look at Sprint's website and they now have EVO's shipping with 2.3, does this mean that we will be able to use the kernel that was used for those models to help out with developing roms with 2.3? Sorry if this was in the wrong place or if this information was known and not helpful.
provide a link & yes this is the wrong section.
http://shop.sprint.com/mysprint/sho...0138&flow=AAL&planSKUId=&ptn=&tabId=dt_phones
it does say...
"Operating system
Ships with Android 2.3"
So theres an official 2.3 version of android for the Evo,just not for those of us who have already purchased our Evo's? How does that work?

This sounds odd. Maybe they updated the page too early? and this means GB Update soon?
Moved to General. I could have moved this to Q&A, but I think it is of enough interest to have it as a General topic.
I thought I was going nuts but right in their page it says ships with 2.3 smh... I hope it means something good for us

That wouldn't make sense to have the update by the end of June if I can order a white one from Sprint.com today and have it to my house with 2.3 in two days...

i have been in contact with HTC about the Gingerbread update and a new version of Sense.... here is what i have gotten so far from the HTC rep......
here was his first reply "I understand that you need to know when the update to the EVO 4G will be available. At this time, a release date has not been announced yet for any of our updates to 2.3. We also don't have any information as to whether the EVO 4G will receive an updated version of Sense, either. For the latest news, please keep an eye on www.htc.com/us and www.twitter.com/htc."
then he sent this "I apologize, I realized that in my previous email my wording didn't confirm that the Evo will be receiving an update to Android 2.3. This follow up is just to confirm that it is a when, not an if; it has been confirmed that the device will be receiving an update."
then i pushed him a little harder for more info and he replied with this "Thank you for your response. As stated in my first email, we don't at this point in time have a release timeframe for Android 2.3 for the EVO (or any of our devices). We want to get the updates out as soon as possible, but will not do so until we have thoroughly tested them and they are approved as ready by both ourselves and Sprint. In regards to an update to the Sense UI, this is completely independent of the ROM version. There's been no word on if the EVO will receive an updated version of Sense or even if Sprint has shown an interest in having it put on the phone. Thus for the latest news, please keep an eye on www.htc.com/us and www.twitter.com/htc."
then he sent this (kind of randomly i dont know why, and ENDED the conversation) "Thank you again for your reply. I'm concerned that only the notification that you have a response is getting to you but not the message itself. In your last two emails you have inquired as to when the Evo will be updated to 2.3 and if it is going to receive an update to the Sense UI. However, I did supply the only available response to that inquiry (thus my concern that the messages are not making it to your inbox for whatever reason). We don't at this point in time have a release timeframe for Android 2.3 for the EVO (or any of our devices). We want to get the updates out as soon as possible, but will not do so until we have thoroughly tested them and they are approved as ready by both ourselves and Sprint. yes, it would. for being a flagship device, it is the only one still stuck on Sense 1.0
sense 2.? would be SUCH AN IMPROVEMENT AND MUCH NEEDED!!!!!!
Funny . . you visit the HTC site and look at tech specs for Evo and it says Android Gingerbread for OS. . .
EDIT: Sorry, looked at Sensation specs thinking it was Evo . .
Yeah that was the first place I checked after seeing it shipping with 2.3 on Sprint's website. You'd think they would communicate, at least a little
wow this is weird. Sprint has updated info to soon b4, but to have both sprint and htc update info to soon is to much of a coincidence. So i'm thinking the ota should be hitting in the next couple of days
EDIT: ok looked all over the HTC site and see nothing saying android 2.3/gingerbread. So where are u guys seeing 2.3 on htc.com?
I did however see that at htc.com it says the EVO has OS 2.1 and at shopamerica.htc.com it says 2.2

Crossing my fingers. I would love to see the 2.3.7 from Xperia S made available to all Xperia PLAYs (even mine, but doubt it, maybe through the PC Suite) Either way thank you very much nickholtus.
I've contacted Sony Support, I am extracting as much as I can lol.
So fare she has no information on the PS Suite. (Edit: She does now, she directed me to the PS Suite Open Beta blog post)
She has denied that we will have an optional update (Bummer, but because UK chat was closed I've contacted US Chat which may be out dated lol)
And she has no details if we will continue to receive firmware updates.

If you should get the same info from anotehr rep @ Sony please confirm it here, that way we can have confirmation from two different users. Not saying I do not believe Nickh post, just confirmation. Thanks!
Thing is we get this kind of information that gets our hopes up high and in the end the result we got from it is NOTHING.
TBH i'm not too sure about the ICS part cause Sony have officially confirmed the Xperia Play wont be getting ICS.
Good work nickholtus! Nice news, hope that'll also happen. IMO, XPlay owners should have the right to decide wether to upgrade or not.
I'm praying right now! thank you nickholtus!!

I would honestly prefer an updated and heavily optimized gingerbread build with an updated kernel than a crippled ics build.

Sounds like the typical BS customer support feed people in order to get them off the line.
I also very much doubt customer support is kept in the know about these kinds of decisions before they're officially announced.
